Oh, no! Not another book about the Liberty Bell, and at first glance, a rather juvenile-looking one, at that. But--this is an excellent book! Themed as if taking a tour at Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, it is appealingly illustrated with broad, earth-tone water-color pictures, giving it the edge for a show-and-tell read -aloud. The text is large, clear and diversely well-defined. The history of the bell is pointed out clearly, simply and concisely; a glossary helps out for those unfamiliar terms. Every reader is sure to learn something they had not known from this fun and interesting book! By the value of this book alone, I would not hesitate to purchase all the books in the American Symbols series for library or classroom.

This is a great book for learning about the Liberty Bell. It's not in a storyline format, but the images are great and the information is accurate. This is a great tool for the younger students learning about Philadelphia, PA and the Liberty Bell. Great book.

This book exhibits the extreme skill and insight possessed by the editor, Dr. Patricia Bell-Scott. Joining a volume of similar works, the words in this book become more than a narrative or a story. They become a way to engage your innermost thoughts and emotions and not feel alone, isolated or ashamed.
This book is a source, a reference and a guide to feminist thought and qaulitative expression. It sits on my shelf as a handy reference when discussing and further exploring the rich, complex and beautiful lives of black women.
Excellence does indeed still exist in the scholarly world. Bravo!

The most intelligent American poetry of the century...

The metaphysical composure, the simplicity of expression, and the rich austerity of William Bronk's poetry has a power reminiscent of T.S. Eliot, whose ability to reflect on the root questions of our life and civilization he shared. This is poetry that will speak to the prosaic moments of your daily thought, and your sense of reality itself, at the same time. It is poetry that will be read a century from now, and so you should read it now...
Amazingly powerful poems.

Bronk's poems are consistently thought-provoking and true. Although the poems are easy to understand, I find myself stopping after almost every poem to process and reread.
I don't know why he isn't read more and better known. He shows the influence of Frost more than any other major poet. He should be taught to high school kids.
This collection is very generous one and a good starting point for someone new to Bronk's poems.

The most inspiring alphabet book. Waldorf style learning method. Could be an example for classroom teaching, or home schooling, or simply complement what the child is seeing in school.

We used this book as a fun time for our family. We look at the pictures and told stories or just pointed different images (which was fun for my 18 months old) we made the sounds each picture start with, before the end of the month my five years old daughter learned (not memorised) her alphabet. More important she can tell stories about each letter to her baby sister and we still use the book as a family story book. I would highly recomend it.

LeAnn's pamphlet/booklet and accompany audio version on CD is for any who would bring their invention idea to life. Where other books have provided weighty coverages, MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN assumes a step-by-step approach which uses plenty of real life examples to illustrate the process of bringing an invention to market. The author holds over 20 years experience in the corporate world and her tips on licensing, patenting, manufacturing and marketing come from real-world knowledge, also helping MAKE YOUR IDEA HAPPEN stand apart from any other - especially with the audio cd reinforcement.

This book is brief, but contains a lot of practical advice for someone with an idea who wants to get started. Instead of dwelling on every step in excruciating detail, she lays out the overall roadmap for the tasks that you need to do and gets you started on your way. Her stories about what worked and what didn't work in her own journey to the market were really helpful, and contain some advice that a first-time entrepreneur could never have known on their own. This book isn't the only resource you'll use to develop your idea, but it should be the first.

Well having qualified in India and then now working in Australia as an emergency medic, this book I would consider as an bible for the general physician to not only gain an insight into the topic but also for the day to day use in temperate practice (IN THIS AGE OF SHRINKING DISTANCES). It is funny not to find a single book of tropical origin (atleast I dont know of one) which gives such an comprehensive review of all the diseases that afflict the tropics.

The Toronto 17 were not Canada's First Homegrown Terrorists

If you didn't read Martyr's Oath last fall when it first came out, you're probably like most Canadians sitting there wondering how seventeen nice Muslim Canadian boys came to be arrested on terrorism charges in Toronto last week. Don't wait to be enlightened by the terminally politically-correct CBC. Instead check out Stewart Bell's book. Not only is it prescient in warning about the spread of the new phenomena of "homegrown" terrorism to Canada's tolerant shores, it is a very good read, conjuring images of Osama bin Laden wannabes wandering around in exotic Middle Eastern deserts, AK-47s in hand.
Stewart Bell thoroughly researched his book, dauntlessly tracking the Jabarah brothers, who swears the bayat or "martyr's oath" of loyalty to Osama bin Laden, from their middle class home in St. Catherines on the Niagara Peninsula to Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South East Asia, and beyond. Although he never got access to either of the boys - one being in the Manhattan Detention Centre and the other already in Paradise enjoying his reward of seventy two virgins, he spent much time with the boys' alienated father Mansour whose own fundamentalism and anti-Western ways, as described by Bell, may have planted the seeds of the boys' own peculiarly Islamic spiritual quest.
As an experienced and award-winning investigative reporter on the national security beat for the National Post, Bell managed to get his hands on many intelligence reports and court documents. Bell's book just invites comparisons between the Jabarah brothers and the Toronto 17. It is also much harder to ignore in the light of what almost happened.

The Martyr's Oath is a thoroughly researched and highly readable account of how a young man who was raised and educated in Canada became a key organizer for al-Qaeda in Asia and played a major part in plans to kill large numbers of Westerners. A particularly interesting section of the book is Bell's description of how Mohammed Mansour Jabarah was "turned" by Canadian security authorities and induced to provide a wealth of valuable information on al-Qaeda and its operations.
While Bell does not claim to have all the answers to the complicated question of what goes into the making of a home-grown North American jihadi, he takes the reader through a fascinating review of the various contributing factors. The Martyr's oath is a must read for students of terrorism concerned about increasing efforts by al-Qaeda and related terrorist groups to recruit new members in Western countries.

More exposition on rarer events than Meeus' algorithms book

The author's book Astronomical Algorithms is all about the precise steps you take to perform certain calculations in astronomy that are rather common with little explanation on how the results were formulated.
This book takes a more conversational approach than that book, since the events being described are rare. It might be retitled "Odd occurrences in Astronomy and the Mathematics Behind Them". Don't get me wrong, there are precise algorithmic steps given here, there is just more conversation along the way. You can tell that the author has a real love of his subject matter. The following is the table of contents for the book:
