"SOAR is probably the best goal setting book since 'Think and Grow Rich.' Jim Ball captures your attention and spells out the recipe you need to follow in order to reach your goal. The parts where Jim included his own experiences and stories were particularly helpful in understanding the universal concepts of success. If you need a 'business plan' for your life...this is the book for you!"

"Soar" is a call to action!

"Soar" encourages you to look within yourself, to identify your goals and avoid the obstacles that may be standing in your way.

The author's voice is both encouraging and forceful in expressing the discipline required to acheive your true potential. "Soar" encourages and pushes you in the way a good athletic coach inspires his team. As with any training, this discipline requires practice. As a result, the book is organized in such a way that you are encouraged to re-read sections, make notes and review the ideas discussed.

"Soar" is a necessary reminder that we must all look to accomplish the "most" that we can and to share our unique talents with the world. The message of this book goes a long way in reminding us to believe in our dreams and to stop at nothing!

Soar If You Dare gives you good, strong principles and methodologies and explains how to apply them directly to your own life. It doesn't waste your time with unrealistic philosophies, it gives you true-to-life examples of how to achieve success in both your personal and professional life.

"Soar" has become my owner's manual for a successful life.

"Soar" was given to me by a dear friend. At first I was a bit hesitant about reading it. But, I picked it up and found myself reading it cover to cover in the first sitting. The information in it is so valuable that I read it with a pad an paper handy to jot down notes.

This book has become a manual that I keep close at hand. I refer back to it often. "Soar" is an intelligent, passionate outline of how to succeed by applying focus, imagination, and hard work. Mr. Ball explains the importance of prioritizing goals, imagining them coming true, planning a course of action, and working hard to achieve those goals. He is at once forceful in his strategies and supportive in his intent. The reader is left energized and empowered. I recommend this book very highly.

This book is not for the beginning harmonica player, but if you can bend notes and perform octaves/tongue splits, or are able to acquire these skills, this is for you. The author plays the licks beautifully on the accompanying CD and the notation is clear. If you have some harmonica skill, you can play these licks, even though many of them sound complex and sophisticated. Tom Ball must have put in hours and hours breaking these licks down - he's done all the work - you just need to listen, follow the notation, and practice. There are some nice surprises on the CD also - the author has a great sense of humor. One of the best harmonica books I've ever seen.

First of all, this is NOT a book for total beginners. This is a book for someone who can bend the notes, but can't get much farther. This is a book of licks, as played by the truly greats. If you can play all these licks, you are ready for prime time. Then you just have to take it to the last step, which is thinking up your own licks. You will have a much better chance of reaching that point when you learn this material. Very well presented by the way.

A great read and the riffs done RIGHT.

Not only are the riffs in this work done correctly but there's a wealth of information on the blues harp and the Walters, too.
Contains a really interesting bio on Big and Little Walter including some interesting insights into their playing style and equipment.
The author is a accomplished professional WORKING harp musician and it shows.
Great for the licks and much more.

The best way to learn any instrument is by transcribing the masters and this book makes it easy. Tom Ball has done all the leg work compiling and transcribing classic lines so you can learn them and get way better. Its also a great overview of blues history and music from a harp point of view which is great for anyone that wants a launching point for becoming hip to the blues. Also the book covers a wide range of difficulty levels so it will give newer guys a place to start but will continue to challenge people who have more experiance. Certainly the best harp book out there, and definantly worth the price.
Just so you know all the tunes on the CD are played using a Bb harp. Also the fact that Ball puts multiple licks on a track is a bit frustrating when your trying to play them over and over again to learn them, but if thats enough to deture your purchase of this treasure trove of blues harp greatness, you should probably just stop trying to playing music.
Hope thats not the case. Have fun and good luck!

Our daughter *loves* this book. I'm so grateful to have a book that emphasizes the lessons nature has for all of us, and in a subtle, "non-preachy" way. The pictures are beautiful and the message is a meaningful alternative to all the books explicitly trying to "teach" kids lessons. Our family loves all of Amy Powell's books, but this one is special because it encourages kids to keep learning long after they've stopped reading it. A great gift, too. This is a wonderful book!!!

"Summer School in the City" was a hit with my young cousins (ages 1 1/2 and 4)! The artistic watercolors really caught the baby's attention while the applicable and easy to understand lessons intrigued my older cousin. Most books are limited to certain age groups, but this one transcends all!

This is such a neat book based on such a great idea. We are nature lovers and think that learning from animals is not only a fun idea, but a very wise one too. We first read this story to our little girl when she was a year old and she loved looking at the bright watercolor paintings of the animals. Now that she is older, she is getting really into the story...so it looks like the book will last us through several age brackets.

What a wonderful idea -- teaching children higher spiritual concepts via the school of nature. Both my kids loved the colorful pictures and found the "lessons" quite interesting.

As a Workers' Compensation practitioner, this is the book that I recommend to all the aquaintances that ask for free advice. I also tend to recommend it to large companies that operate in CA and other states, because it gives the law and requirements in terms that a high school graduate can understand.

There is more emphasis in this book on answers and "by the number" processes than legal precedent or analysis, which I find easier to follow for the lay person. Chris Ball also has a number of forms included with simple completion directions.

If someone is looking for an overview with more legal justification or reference to statutes, the California Workers' Compensation Handbook is an excellent choice. This book by Stanford Herlick is updated every year, and has shorter sections with less hand-holding.

I think that the Herlick paperback is the reference source of choice for the attorney or paralegal to carry in the car or briefcase for quick review of issues and solutions.

Workers Comp Injury? You need to have this book!

Review Date: 2004-08-29
I bought this book when I was first injured after getting so frustrated at not being able to get answers to my questions anywhere else. I searched the internet, talked to people, but I just kept going in circles. Then I discovered this book. It saved me. I have since hired a lawyer, however, you will feel more empowered and in control if you understand the process and the terminology. Plus, insurance companies try to "get away" with some things, assuming the average person won't know their workers comp rights. This book has saved me several times in that instance. (For example, they made doctor's appointments for me, sent me the info on their legal letterhead saying I was required to go to that particular doctor. Since I knew my rights from reading the book, I challenged them and didn't have to go to their doctor. Basically, I think they try these tactics just because most people aren't informed, and will just do what they say) It's so important to understand what is happening with your case, and what your rights are. I've been injured for four years, and find I research something in this book at least once a week. If you have a workers comp injury, you shouldn't be without this book! (Also, Nolo puts out a great book on filing for social security disability too) Best of luck to you!

The average consumer has no idea of the laws and the rights he has when faced with an on the job injury.

This book is easy to read and understand. I am a nurse case manager for workers comp injuries and found this book extremely helpful. I encourage all my clients to obtain this book even if they have a lawyer. It gives them a solid knowledge base when the docs, attorneys and insurance people are throwing terms around.

It is well organized and follows a normal sequence of events. It was written by an attorney who handles workers comp cases.

I highly recommend this book.

There is an Art to Trial Advocacy
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-16
This book is the perfect supplement for a trial advocacy textbook. David Ball brings a valuable and fresh perspective to trial lawyers. He can do so because he is not a lawyer, but rather has an extensive background in theater such as being the former chair of the theater department at Duke University. Now, he is a professional trial consultant. For example, Ball urges lawyers to take the lessons that actors, directors and playwrights have mastered (such as the importance of telling a story that reaches the emotions of the audience) and using those techniques at trial. He makes one of many great points when he suggests how a lawyer might have ended Hamlet (badly) as opposed to how Shakespeare did. He then shows how anyone can take the lessons from Shakespeare to craft a strong ending to a closing argument in trial.

For opening statements in a personal injury case he teaches that instead of beginning with a saying such as "Driving too fast is negligent," you should capture the jury's attention with "Last August the truck driver sitting over there was going too fast and killed a little girl." Lawyers are too often focused on the details executing techniques and Ball reminds us that developing the art of trial advocacy is the most important skill of all.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to the world of domestic pets. Not only does it encourage the unlimited imagination that children definitely possess but it dovetails the perceptions of how children tend to view their pets through these loveable casts of animal characters. Who as a kid hasn't fantasized about what our pets do when we aren't around, especially when they are left alone together! Brutus and Baby show us what it's really like to be left at the kennel and how the simple act of locating Daisy's missing ball turns into a great adventure where kindness, love and companionship triumph over all obstacles. It's definitely a story worth sharing with your child.

I was a bit skeptical when I started reading The Alpha Factor. After all, Wes Ball claimed to have turned around some pretty difficult products. But after I read the book, I understood that this truly is revolutionary stuff. I believe I can use this to grow my business, even though mine is no multi-national corporation.

The "Hierarchy of Purchase Drivers" helped me understand the customer decision process in a whole new light that makes sense of so many things I've struggled to understand for years. And finally understanding why price is not what customers really worry about and how I can help my wholesalers and retailers understand that may alone make me many hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits I have been missing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to grow a business and make more profit quickly, while competitors just scratch their heads and wonder how you did it!

The Alpha Factor is a great book for those who want to create or re-create strategies on how to re-focus your business to becoming the core of your industry by driving customer expectations and focusing on the things that make you who you are. You don't need to be the highest volume store, or the firm with the biggest profit to be the one who others model their businesses off of. Wes Ball tells the stories of his previous 25+ years of experience consulting companies from multi-nationals to small businesses. He also guides you through example with ideas to re-train the thinking of your customers and increase revenue without lowering prices or having gimmicky promotions. I would recommend this book for anyone who feels like business is slowing and feels like they won't be able to survive in the world market. He also has a website that is full of extra information that correlates with the books motives. Hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
