Insightful analysis of Hemingway's work for anyone who wants to get past the literal meanings to reach the symbolic. Reading Baker's book makes reading Hemingway an even more rewarding experience.

well done. i don't usually care to read books by academics, but this is the exception to the rule. you get the full picture here about ernie, warts and all. you may not like some of the things you'll find out about the great novelist...but then, that's life. i say you'll still want to read ernie's books--because he was that good. ernie lives on!

I found this book to be extremely helpful in determining priorities in my life. Schultze does an excellent job at getting to the heart of the matter, as well as convicting the reader to examine the meanings of community, vocation, leisure, etc. As a recent college graduate, I find that this book helped me realize that finding a place in this world means more than finding a career.

I read this book to prepare for a post-graduate job search. The vocational advice is wise and useful. I really enjoyed the calling that Schultze emphasizes when looking for a vocation. All jobs are opportunities to serve if we learn to have our hearts and minds in the right places. I recommend this book not only for college and post graduate readers, but for anyone searching to recharge their passion for serving others and God.

The Smoothness of David Baker

I enjoy David Baker's newest book of poetry because it brings the natural world to life. So often in nature, contemporary authors have a difficult time conveying their feelings to others about what they have seen or felt whether they are outside or on the farm. Baker shows us what actually goes on in the world around us. Not just what we see through our eyes. He brings us the smells, the sensations on the backs of our necks, and the feelings we get when the horses are the only ones who we can talk to. Get it! Read it!

Best book of criticism

Review Date: 2004-04-01
This is the best book of criticism I have read in a long time. Baker writes in an intelligent voice, but accessible voice, about other poets and their works. What you will learn from this book is how to think critically about poetry and if you are a poet, how to think critically about your own poetry. He doesn't hold back with his praise or criticism and when poems/books aren't up to snuff, he tells you and gives you some good reasons why. Read it, if you love poetry and love an intelligent mind and eloquent voice (and if you're tired of stodgy overly intellectualized criticism).

DISCOVER A MAGIC UNDERWATER WORLD

.

Jeannie Baker's latest book contains dazzlingly realistic images.

The illustrations in "Hidden Forest" are photographs of her gallery works that are 3-dimensional constructions, made up of a translucent collage of materials illuminated from behind in a light box. They are truly remarkable with their vividness and accuracy of representation. There is a strong environmental theme running through Jeannie's works. In this story it is the fragility of the marine environment that is the focus of the story.

Young Ben has to go diving in the Kelp Forest to learn about the beauty and special qualities of this underwater world.

This is a truly magnificent book. Look out for an exhibition of Jeannie's artworks if it tours near you.

This is another beautiful book from a great artist. Jeannie Baker uses a range of techniques to bring to life the underwater world. Each of the pictures has been created so lovingly that Baker's respect for the Australian landscape is obvious. As a teacher of young children I love this book for its detail. It never fails to quieten a class as they gaze at the pictures and listen to the wonderful story. I have also given copies to my nephew who is ocean-crazy and he loves it. Down here in Australia we spend a lot of time in the ocean, looking at the ocean and talking about the ocean and this is one of those books that is becoming a kids classic.

I had to read this book as a text for O.T. Survey, a class I took while in Bible College. Mr. Merill wrote a wonderful book that does not confuse Bible students nor casts doubt on the certainty of the validity of the O.T. Scriptures. Great infromation and well documented. I also like his charts and foot notes.

The Holy Spirit 'of God'

Pink's work on the Holy Spirit is one of his lesser known works on major Christian doctrines. It was first in print as a series of articles in the monthly magazine 'Studies in the Scriptures'from 1935-1937. The 'Studies..' were began in 1922,a joint venture of A.W.Pink and I.C.Herendeen. The 'Holy Spirit'was first published in book form in 1970 some 18 years after Pink's death. At times it has been out of print for years at a time. The ministry of Chapel Library in Pensacola Florida uses it as a study guide for those interested in their study by mail courses. Why this book is somewhat undervalued of Pink's major doctrinal studies remains a mystery to me. The chapter titles which list the work of the Spirit are so helpful in identifying the various ministries of the Holy Spirit's work in the lives of God's people. Afew that I would like to mention are:The Holy Spirit regenerating,The Spirit convicting, the Spirit working faith, the Spirit uniting to Christ, the Spirit assuring and the Spirit leading. Simply listing the 22 chapter titles on various aspects of the work of the Holy Spirit of God is a lesson itself. The person and work of the Holy Spirit is where there is as much divergence in Christendom, as there is with any other major Christian teaching. As is characteristic of almost anything that came from Pink's pen there is a plethora of insights and riches that have been mined from the Word of God. An outstanding example is on p.31 "Hence, from the first entrance of sin, there were two great heads to the promises which God gave His people:the sending of His Son to obey and die,the sending of His Spirit to make effectual the fruits of the former."A.W.Pinks work on the Holy Spirit is without a doubt one of the great works ever penned on the third person of the Triune God.

Great exposition. There is so much insight about the work, attributes and role of the Holy Spirit that this book is not a quick read. It requires study to get the most out of it. Also, it is a book you can read and then re-read again and again.

We originally borrowed this book from the library, but soon realized that we needed to have it around all the time. The collage is stunning and brings to life New York City in the early 80s. Every detail of the pictures reminds me of that era from the headline on the newspapers to abandoned buildings on the Lower East Side. The story is simple, yet quite emotive. Now I'm on a hunt for all of her other books.

I've been reading the Spanish language version of this book to second graders for about five years. They are enthralled by the story and the artwork. The art is done in 3 dimensional collage using natural materials - hard to distinguish from reality. It inspires great art projects. My copy has worn out from loving eyes and fingers poring over it. If you're searching for a gift. Whether it be for a wife, a girlfriend or let's face it yourself, this little book is a keeper. This short story by Judy Baker is a quick and fun read. The characters are delightful and you will find yourself caught up in their heartfelt romance. I thoroughly loved the book and had it read in one setting. I couldn't put it down. It tells the tale of a successful, divorced woman who unexpectedly finds herself persued by the jolly one himself, Santa. It's an endearing story about finding love again and second chances. I loved it. If you are looking for a romance and a bit of Christmas cheer as well, this is the book for you. It would make a great stocking stuffer!

Fall in love again like Doris Day and Rock Hudson

While you grab a cup of hot chocolate, draw the curtains open to watch the light snow fall on a moonlit yard and warm the fire --be sure to grab this book! It's like a journey to the days where movie stars always looked beautiful and the men were always dashing. This short book would make a wonderful film. There's so much character and rich Christmas and holiday cheer as the lead character Lena Belle struggles with her new-found feelings for the dashing "homeless" santa that's waltzed into her department store job and charmed everyone.
Like Rock Hudson and Doris Day these two are made for each other and reading their journey through love is as enjoyable as that hot chocolate on the cold winter night! I'd recommend it to anyone who love the holdiays as well as romance.

Arthur Simon has written a masterpiece. Being insightful but not judging, Simon describes why our culture keeps us from focusing on what is truly important and gently instructs us how to live a life of purpose and integrity. This easy to read book leaves us with a haunting feeling that there is so much more that we can do to make the world a better place. It forces us to leave our self-centered being to reach out and serve others. How Much Is Enough also demonstrates how adopting this framework for living will in turn benefit you as well as those you serve.

I happened upon this book at Amazon and it is one of the best books I have read. I finished it in about 2 days, put it down and then started all over again. We all need a fresh perspective on our lives now and then, and this book did that for me. When our lives are spent acquiring things it is easy to conclude that the quality of life is based on what we have or what can be purchased. This book is so important in the affluent culture we live and are raising our children. I love the viewpoint, that we often find ourselves "keeping up with the Jones'" when in fact WE are the Jones' for much of the population. We always seem to compare ourselves to those who have more than we have, not those who have less. This book is like taking blinders off your eyes!

Great unconventional book of puppet skits

Review Date: 2006-12-10
These are very fun puppet skits that are absolutely hilarious but all have a point that is very clear. A lot of puppet skits books are ok, but this one takes the cake. The personalities of each character are well-defined and are tons of fun. I have used these skits in my church as well as with my nieces, who love performing them, especially the Rolf and Fleabisucuit skits. I highly recommend this whether you are actively involved in children's ministry or just have kids in your home that you want to do some creative devotions with.
