Baker Books

In this addition to Baker's Rabbit series, Gray Rabbit is trying to find his favorite book. He can't find it because all of his stuff is messed up. So he sorts through everything arranging his things into piles where they belong. However, in each pile there is one item that is out of place. This oddball leads to Rabbit's next arrangement until finally he has gone through everything and found his book. Kids love Alan Baker's Rabbit books and with the brilliant colors, vivid shapes, and concept lessons that they help teach, parents will enjoy the books as well. Great book for preschool to kindergarten children.

My kids love Gray Rabbit, the illustrations are so vivid. My two year old and four year old love to find the "wrong thing" as rabbit organizes his toys. We just got it yesterday and have already read it at least half a dozen times.

Any western reader of the late 1950's and early 1960's will have taken notice of author Carl W. Breihan. Mr. Breihan was noticeable for his work especially on Jesse James, as well as lawmen and gunfighters of the old west. Mr. Breihan was involved with law enforcement himself as well as other offices. As far as I can establish, he was born in 1915 and is yet living.

This particular book, GREAT GUNFIGHTERS OF THE WEST, was very popular at the time of its publishing in hardcover from the Naylor Company in 1962. The book came to my attention through reading the old TRUE WEST magazine from Joe Small, Austin, Texas. Each month Naylor would run an ad listing the books they offered. The copy I have on my western shelves, however, is a later SIGNET paperback well done and yet in great reading shape.

For a prospective reader of this older book a listing of its contents should not be unwelcome. Though some of the material would have to be considered dated, its factual base cannot be questioned. The book describes the lives of Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson, Clay Allison, Ben Thompson, Wild Bill Longley, Cullen Baker, Henry Starr, Henry Brown, and Frank Leslie. These men, some law abiding a few not, are all listed as "legendary western greats" on the cover, adding "Their names are all carved on the bullet-ridden pattern of the bloody, violent West". One question I have always entertained: why was the life of Luke Short, gambler and gunman, not included in this volume. Oh, well, I didn't write it, Mr. Breihan did. And write it well he did.

Included within the book also are 8 pages of 'authentic' photos. And I really enjoy authentic photos as opposed to non-authentic. Seriously, even at this late date no better book on this subject is available for the casual, general reader interested in reading a collection based on gunmen of the the old west.

One interesting and very useful section within this book is one that describes the guns the individual gunmen used. So we get both a history of the men and also the guns they used in their daily activities.

Thank you Mr. Breihan for a book not only well done, but one that seems to have lasted down through the years.

I read this book and when I had finished the only draw back was I wanted more, This was and excellent and well documented book. I understand the author had planned a book two but it never came to past, What a shame. If you get a chance to read this book By Elmer LeRoy Baker I think you will enjoy it. Although it is rare and hard to find this reader thinks it is worth it.

This book deserves a long glowing review, but I don't want to make you waste time reading my comments, when you could be reading this book.

Seriously, the reference information, the musical insight, the CD, etc... Well worth the price!

I bought this book two years ago, and I was recommending it to a friend today. I looked it up so that I could send the link to my friend and I was surprised to see only one review!

I know that book gets lots of praise in "harp circles" and my only guess is that people just assume that everyone knows how great a book it is, and they (like me) forget to go back and write a review.

Many consider this book to be the "Harmonica Bible." A great harmonica reference book. I use this all the time.

I am using this as the basis for a men's sermon series in my church. It deals with real issues that face men every day. Not only have I personally been challenged, I have been better able to recognized destructive behavior in some of the men I counsel with and help them better understand how they are self-destructing. The discussion questions help bring it home in terms of applying the biblical principles addressed. This would be great for personal edification, a group study, or as a topical sermon series.

Jeffrey E. Miller, Senior Pastor at Trinity Bible Church in Richardson, Texas, examines twelve struggles common to men today in light of lessons we can learn from men of the Bible who faced these same challenges.
The book is divided into twelve topical chapters exploring the trials faced by men, in their role as husband, father, leader, or friend. Included in the book are questions for individual study or group discussion. These thought provoking reflection questions direct the reader to consider action steps that can be taken to live as a better man. Additional assignments include scriptures to memorize and Bible passages to read. These assignments further enhance the use of this book as a study tool.
I personally found the chapters on "Misplaced Priorities" and "Insensitivity" particularly helpful to me as a husband and father. I was also made aware of the danger of being guilty of "Manipulation." I learned from the lessons of Abram's life that I have a need to trust God more, regardless of difficult circumstances.
The book also provides background material for Sunday school teachers, and pastors. The contemporary, practical lessons offer a fresh approach on Christian living for contemporary men based on the teaching of the Bible. Whether dealing with "Unresolved Anger", "Discontentment", or "Lust", there are lessons for the Christian Businessman, for the wayward college student, or for a pastor or church staff member.
Each chapter begins with a selected quote from a well known author or Christian leader that directs the reader to consider the deeper meaning of the material being considered.
Jeffrey Miller articulates clearly Christian principles through stories and illustrations from the lives of others that help the reader avoid these common hazards, by learning from the mistakes of others. The chapters in this book are excellent material for casual discussion or formal study. This is a book about men for men, a model for how to overcome twelve challenges all men face.

I have the honor of meeting and coming to know the three authors of this book. What they have shared in the book is from the heart. A definite must have book!

The sharing of knowledge, love & perserverence touched my mind & heart. I also enjoyed very much the intertwining of languages.

This is the best devotional book I have ever seen and the only one I have begun to use every day. I look forward to spending the time each morning in it. Mr. Boa has braided scripture into the most useful tool I have ever found for building a prayer and devotional time in a way that causes you to grow in worship. I picked it up by accident from a small store. After spending a few mornings with this book I began to question whether it was just my imagination, or was this really an outstanding piece of arrangement. Mr. Boa disappears entirely. What is left is an elegant, simple aid to mature your prayer life. I now consider this an amazing gift from God. God bless Ken Boa.

This is the BEST 3 month guide to" praying thru the scripture" ever found. Ones life is changed forever because the scriptures Boa arranges together are classic studies on God Himself as well as His Heart. Boa is a scholar with a "heart" and he wears it for all to see in this charming but useful book. He also has this book under the titles of "Handbook to Prayer"and" Face to Face 1 and 2"....so if one can't find this title please know that the other titles are the same and have the same format and benefit.

I just wanted to say, how awesome this little reference book is, with its Counselor's Quick Check List, Some Don'ts in Counseling, the Fifty Failure Factors, Remarks and Responses, Why People Come for Counseling and Data Gathering, just to mention a few. For a mini book, it sure is packed full of helpful guidance, as well as a quick review of some scripture references, to help prepare me before my counseling sessions and aid me in the direction in which to move during the sessions. I plan to take this mini-manual with me every time I step out the door, so that I can always be equipped on the spot to give an answer to those that are weary and or searching for the biblical way to handle an issue or conflict.
This is one sweet purchase, I know it will help you, as much as it has and continues to help me.

well done. i don't usually care to read books by academics, but this is the exception to the rule. you get the full picture here about ernie, warts and all. you may not like some of the things you'll find out about the great novelist...but then, that's life. i say you'll still want to read ernie's books--because he was that good. ernie lives on!

I found this book to be extremely helpful in determining priorities in my life. Schultze does an excellent job at getting to the heart of the matter, as well as convicting the reader to examine the meanings of community, vocation, leisure, etc. As a recent college graduate, I find that this book helped me realize that finding a place in this world means more than finding a career.

I read this book to prepare for a post-graduate job search. The vocational advice is wise and useful. I really enjoyed the calling that Schultze emphasizes when looking for a vocation. All jobs are opportunities to serve if we learn to have our hearts and minds in the right places. I recommend this book not only for college and post graduate readers, but for anyone searching to recharge their passion for serving others and God.
