Eleven-year-old Randy Wilcox and his friends, Stewart, Jeff, and Hal, think that life in New Market, Virginia, is boring. They are hoping that their little town is more exciting than they think it is, so they buy a police scanner. Besides, they want to own their own detective agency someday, so knowing police codes could come in handy.

While the boys are getting ready for the camping trip, news comes across the scanner of a bank robbery. The boys decide to continue with their plans for the weekend and continue packing--after all, the bank robbers will be long gone and their trip will be completely uneventful--or will it?

This is an exciting read guaranteed to keep the reluctant readers attention. I didn't find anything I disliked about Secret of Abbott's Cave. My son is anxious to get his hand on the book and read it for himself. The Police Codes are at the back of the book. Which my husband that was cool, since he works for our local Police Dept.

My older two boys who are 8 and 10 years old LOVED these books. I have one boy who doesn't like to read, but it was easy getting him to read everyday with this series of books! They would come tell me everything that happened in the part they read that day. I'm so glad I found an adventure that they like to read and isn't harsh on their little minds.

It doesn't seem like there are lot of good books for boys, and it's good to see someone giving them something interesting to read. Max Anderson's adventure has excitement, humor, and good lessons. I highly recommend this book, especially for kids who haven't caught on to the value and fun of reading, and might need something to get them started.

The latest title in Max Elliot Anderson's "Tweener Press Adventure Series", Secret Of Abbot's Cave finds Randy and his friends have formed a detective club and pooled their resources to buy a police radio scanner. After learning of a bank robbery, they went on a camping trip and while exploring a cave, discover hidden loot from the robbery. Now they must figure out what the right thing to do is -- and deal with powerful temptations to the contrary. Secret Of Abbot's Cave is not only a rollicking good story, it has embedded within it some very good personal values for young readers to absorb.

In "Secret of Abbott's Cave," Randy Wilcox (the main character) and his friends (Stewart Adkins, Jeff Stevens, and Hal Conti) form a club called the Hilton Park Road Detective Club. They decide to get a police scanner radio so that when crime happens, they can be at the crime scene. When they go to Sunday school one day, they get a new teacher and have a lesson that will affect their future adventures. The teacher talks about how Jesus made a blind man see, and they did an activity where the Sunday school class was in total darkness and some of them had to go through a blind "obstacle course".

Randy and his friends like cave exploring although they haven't explored any caves yet. They take a class on safety and what to bring in caves. Later on, Randy and his friends go to explore a cave on Jeff Steven's uncle's property. When they get picked up they hear the police scanner talking about a bank robbery and two suspects that were on the run. When the friends reach their destination, the set up camp near the cave and in the morning, they see the two bank robbers go towards the direction of the cave. In the morning the friends go in the cave and find the money and later the robbers come and follow the kids deep in the seemingly endless cave. Through great leadership and trust, Randy and his friends make it out the cave safely and end up getting the robbers arrested. Randy and his friends come out as town heroes.

The author really made this book easy on the eyes because it didn't have many "big" words. Also, the author wrote in such a way that I could picture exactly what was going on, such as when Stewart was looking down into a hole in the cave and dropped his helmet. I could hear the flashlight coming apart from the helmet and breaking into the wall.

I like this book because it was easy to read, yet it had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen to the kids in the next sentence! This book is great if you want a quick read and like adventure books. Also, this book is intended for the younger ages, but in my opinion anyone of any age could enjoy this delightful book. And it comes with an extra feature at the end, a list of Hampton, Virginia's 10-codes and fire signals! I recommend that anyone who is at least a little interested should buy this book.

Many times in marriage, ministry and with relationships in general, "things can go south for unexpected reasons" and the more one does to correct the problem seems to only make it worse. There could be a relational transference occuring. This book does a great job in identifying such and provides steps to take for healthy resolution.

McIntyre's book is an absolute MUST read for the lay or professional pastoral worker/counselor. Her insights regarding the dynamic of transference are penetrating and relevant to a proper understanding of the subject. Whether you are being transferred onto, or have engaged in this behavior yourself, McIntyre's book illimunates the subject in such a way as to enlighten the reader to the harmful effects of pressing transferences, the appropriate measures and precautions to take when we're the object of transference, as well as what to do if we're the one in transference. A much needed and useful tool in spiritual and emotional warfare.

The book i personally found very helpful in my own family setting as it looks on why people transfer their emotions onto others. It deals wisely with the need to find wholeness in our relationship with God - to open the memories which when repressed can lead us to transfer onto others. For the one transfered upon the importance of holding onto the truth and not wallowing in a reactive and subjective attitude is made clear. The book has helped me feel less alone and fearful in response to others' transferance and also my own unhealedness. I recommend the book as a 'restoring' book to those 'subject' to their own unresolved needs and those of others.

McIntyre's book is an incredible testimony of personal experience in emotional enmeshment and the underlying spiritual and psychological issues that accompany it. It is also an incredible explication of how this common emotional condition is connected to christian concepts of idolatry. For those who have been caught up in the emotional turmoil and conflict that is common in these kinds of experiences, especially when they come out in a church, counseling or ministry context as well as interpersonal relationships, this book can bring insight and clarity to the spiritual and emotional underpinnings of this common condition. Contrary to some interpretations, this book does not label "transference" as "sin", but rather points out from a testimonial and pastoral perspective how the dynamics of transference play an integral part in emotional enmeshment, emotional dependence and emotional idolatry in present relationships. It also covers well how to deal with it outside the therapy office in the contexts in which it can occurr. It is not a substitute for more in-depth psychological understanding of the concepts presented, or for therapy where it is needed. It is a great book for gaining insight and initial understanding on a pastoral level about issues that are tumultuous and confusing in nature.

Excellent Commentary For Pastors, Bible College Students, Bible Teachers

Review Date: 2008-11-24
I'm a pastor who is planning a sermon series through Song of Songs. In my research on the book I decided to purchase this commentary and have become fond of it. It's worth noting that the editor of this Baker Commentary series (Longman III) wrote his own commentary on the Song of Songs in the NICOT series. Because of this, I believe Hess had an unspoken (or maybe even spoken) understanding that he had better do a first rate job on this commentary. I believe he has done just that.

When the author of the Word Commentary on Genesis (Wenham) writes a rave review on an Old Testament Commentary of any book, it is worth noting, because of his extensive knowledge of ancient near eastern culture.

First we have about 285 pages on this 8 chapter book. He lays the material out in a very readable form. Hess reviews the options and declares his position without being shy about it. Sometimes he does not explain his reasons in depth, but you do find out where he stands. For example in his introduction he simply says that the Song of Songs should not be read as a drama (one major view), but that it closely resembles ancient neareast poetry, especially Egyptian love poetry. He gives an extensive 17 page bibliography on Song of Songs associated material at the end of the book. For students doing research, here you go!

Hess also gives you good nuggets for further study on a variety of issues, like dating, authorship, the history of interpretation of this book, etc... On the history of interpretation he cites Pope as the most extensive known history of interpretation on Song of Songs. Things like this reveal a breadth of knowledge on the subject and also assist new students in sorting through the myriad of potential sources. He's excellent in this way throughout the book.

One criticism: he often refers to a wasf in his outline and in the book. Unfortunately the definition of this term is hard to find. I stumbled across it in the middle of some text on page 31. I would prefer that they asterisk that term and send you to the definition page whenever they use it or at least in the first chunk of the book. Since many people do not read commentaries from cover to cover, that's frustrating. (By the way it is an arabic term for love poetry).

After what I would consider a short introduction, he gives an outline for the book and then begins his commentary. His outline is as follows:
I. Title
II. Prologue: first coming together and intimacy 1:2-2:7
III. Lovers joined and separated 2:8 to 3:5
IV. Love and marriage at the heart of the song 3:6 to 5:1
V. Search and reunion 5:2 to 6:3
VI. Desire for the female and love in he country 6:4 to 8:4
VII. Epilogue: The power of love 8:5 to end

Hess comments with references that are easy to read, but on the technical side as far as Song of Songs commentaries go. This is no devotional commentary. It has transliterations of ancient language terminology throughout. He often cites how many times a term appears, where it first appears and how that is all relevant to the text at hand.

This commentary has no excursions. There are no articles on theological implications that draw out Christological allusions or parallels. It is entirely focused on a literal rendering of the book.

On the actual text Hess provides his own translation. If you are working on a specific verse in Song of Songs, it is easy to navigate Hess. The commentary relationship to the text is clearly marked. Overall this commentary is very valuable and one that I have been referring to regularly since I received it. Get a copy today.

Someone has finally written a commentary from the text, not from preconceived ideas of "religious" individuals who presume to know the mind of God. If anything, the author is overly cautious in stating what he sees in the text.

This treatment of the Song of Songs is valuable for all readers. The book is thorough in exploring the Song and very well-written. It is technical when it needs to be, yet is highly readable due to excellent explanations. It refers to the Hebrew text when necessary, but provides the untrained reader with enough of an explanation to be understandable. Mr. Longman takes the approach that the Songis an anthology of love poetry. But he moves beyond the secular to deomonstrating clearly how the Song fits into the canon for Jews and Christians. The book is appropriately reverent while celebrating the God-given human love expressed so beautifully in the Song. People of faith will find the book valuable and others will find the scholarship excellent. If you want a highly readable commentary, with superior scholarship and an elucidating exploration of this bible book, this commentary will not let you down.

In light of the dozens of scholarly commentaries on the Song of
Song, the work by Professor Hess is concise and careful. He provides excellent footnotes supporting his interpretive
strategies as well as the most balanced summary of the interpretation and dating questions of this book of the Bible.
The strength of the book is that it recognizes theological as well as literal approaches as equally valid. For a student who wishes to read a solid introduction to the Song of Songs, I
recommend this volume

Hess' work will revolutionize one's understanding of this seemingly nebulous book of Hebrew poetry. It makes an excellent undergraduate textbook and can be read from cover to cover like an ordinary book. All of the Hebrew vocabulary is transliterated, making it accessible for those unfamiliar with the language. After a brief, but informative discussion of the history of Song of Songs interpretation, Hess begins a verse-by-verse discussion of the entire poem. He divides his commentary into seven chapters, the first of which discusses the book's introduction. The remaining six chapters deal with the individual sections of the poem. Each section unfolds the linguistic meaning of the text and its poetic imagery along with its underlying cultural/ Ancient Near Eastern background. Hess concludes each of the six sections with a discussion of its theological implications for Christians today. He adeptly demonstrates how Hebrew word usage in other parts of the Old Testament informs the usage of those same Hebrew words in the Song of Songs. He gently dismisses allegorical interpretations of the poetic imagery and instead views the poem as a celebration of love as it is fully expressed within the covenant of marriage. His insights regarding the contemporary relevance of Song of Songs for Christians, particularly in the theological sections, are superb! They provide excellent guidance both for preaching and for teaching the book's message. Pastors and teachers could easily craft an excellent series of six sermons (one for each of the major sections) for a marriage seminar using Hess' commentary, which successfully dispels the myth that Song of Songs is inappropriate for public teaching and preaching. He advocates a high view of the marriage covenant and the fulfillment/enjoyment/impact of love (and its various expressions) within that relationship as a gift intended to honor God who gave it. He emphasizes how love's full expression within the marriage covenant is a picture of Christ's love for the Church without attempting to overspiritualize or allegorize every symbol (a tactic that some overly sanctimonious interpreters of this book have tried to do throughout the history of its interpretation). This commentary not only helps readers gain a better understanding of the book's intended meaning, but also of its place within the canon of Scripture. It is a welcome corrective for a Church that is being increasingly ravaged from within by sexual promiscuity, adultery and divorce. Highly recommended for pastors, teachers and laypeople!!!

This is the 2nd copy of this book I've bought. The first was for myself and has been a great help with my rheumatoid arthritis over the years. Now that my daughter has been diagnosed with the same disease, I wanted her to have a copy for her own, not just my borrowed copy. Besides, I needed mine back!

The idea that we can take charge of our disease and make informed decisions, and especially, improve our condition through strength training is an empowering concept. The book discusses everything from diet to drugs to alternative treatments, with detailed instructions and diagrams on stretching and strength exercises that can be done at home and really make a difference.

I showed this book to my rheumatologist, and he was quite impressed. I'd recommend it for anyone with arthritis.

No hype, just good, sound information.

I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence. If you're like me, then you'll love this book. It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University. In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis. The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients. I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain. So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

exercise + diet = controlled arthritis...

Treasured Friends by Ann Hibbard is one of the best books I have ever read on friendship. It is a Christian based book, and is a book written for women, but I feel no matter what your spiritual beliefs are, you can gain something valuable from this book.
Not only are there lovely and personal stories about friendship, but there are insightful lessons on how to find friends, and how to keep them. The most helpful part of the book for me were the chapters on Dissapointments and Transformations. Having gone through a loss of a life long friend, and after reading many books on friendship, I never really found the right words about the loss and moving on. In reading this book and reading about other women's experience with such losses, I was finally able to put the pieces together and forgive myself and my friend.
So many books focus on romantic relationships and their losses, and so few capture the importance of friendship and the devestation and hurt their losses can bring. This book was a true comfort.
A Treasure that I will read again.

I know I'm not the only female to realize that friendships with other females are invaluable, but so hard to find. I'm one of those ladies who have found it much easier and less dissapointing to befriend guys over gals. I have other female friends, but very few go deep and intimate because of my lack of trust. I have wanted that one special best female friend all my life. One whom I can truly be myself and still be accepted. She is someone who is honest and can survive any conflict because we care about eachother and the friendship. She won't desert me or betray me.

True friends are very hard to find. The reason why? --It's not easy to be a true friend, and in order to find a true friend, you must be one first. I always thought I had all the qualities and met all the expectations of a true friend, but this book has really helped me see the light! I may have all the best intentions, but I can be very critical and judgmental of friends if I disagree with them, and that has been a huge barrier for me. This not only applies to friends, but also to sisters, mothers, daughters, and yes..even with our relationships to fathers, brothers, boyfriends, husbands.

When we have that one (or maybe more) true female friend(s) it permeates into all other relationships with relatives, other friends, boyfriends, husbands, co-workers..etc. This book has really helped me to learn how to be a better friend to the friends I have now. It's not always easy, but the easiest route for goals in life aren't so long lasting and deep (as far as relationships at least)

God truly created us to be in fellowship with Him and with one another. It's no wonder when we are punished we are sent to be alone in our rooms, grounded (away from friends), and the worst is solitary confinement. There are times to be alone, but this can only truly be enjoyed and full-filling when it's a CHOICE to be alone and we have that balance of relationships/friendships to make our alone times good.

You do not have to read the chapters in order. The first few are good to start with, but it's okay to skip around, depending where you are in your friendships arena. The book is written from a Christian, Bible abiding perspective with very practical examples that many (Christian or not) can relate to. This book really helped me see how to appreciate friendships when they aren't always going so smoothly by looking to how Jesus was a true and real friend to people who really needed it and desired it. It's so easy to get frusterated or to fear differences between others, especially when they get close to us. When I look to Jesus I'm reminded of this forgotten truth... -he loves us and accepts us unconditionally. He does not want us to live destructive lives which lack healthy TRUE friendships, therefore he gives us his example of how to live, (Thank You Jesus!)

Just buy this book and read it at your own pace. You will see a change for the better in your friendships (new and/or old) if you're pursuing change for the better. Remember, many of the best friendships/relationships in life require patience -and they are worth waiting for. True frienships take time! But it will pay off. I am sure of this, I'm still seeking that one but I'm confident it's coming, can see it already. For I trust the man who's the world's best friend ever...Jesus.

If you want to be a better friend, read this book!

I checked this book out at the local library and enjoyed it so much until I had to order it for my own personal library. The relationship between the main character and the minister was admirable. I have recommended this book as a read for my book club and recommend it for others as well.

Ms Dorrell brings to life the people, the place, and the time. The strands of the story flow together naturally. This book did not try to be a good book. It is a good book.

This is one of the BEST reads I have had in long time (and I have done a considerable amount of reading).Ms.Dorrell had given us a real gem here.I could totally imagine every scene as I went through the book. The story is touching and you find yourself rooting for the characters.I was lost in this story. In a time when we are told that only sex, violence and crude behavior is what sells,I am glad that there are still some people who are giving us product that moves us and entertains us without those things.I recommend this book to anyone who longs for a book that will give you a cozy feeling.

Linda Dorrell's True Believers is the riveting and highly recommended story of Peggy Nickles, a Southern woman whose work of charity results in harsh family confrontations, social expectations, and racism in her 1950s rural community. Woven into the fabric of a compelling story are timeless lessons on the human spirit and the spiritual/emotional resources of the Christian gospel in the face of physical and cultural obstacles to establishing loving relationships and nurturing communities of faith.

American Cruisers: the designs from beginning to end

Review Date: 2003-09-15
The American cruiser was an odd ship for the United States Navy. The cruisers most Americans know of are the "Treaty Cruisers" which first started with the Pennsicola class (or egg shells armed with hammers) and the cruiser class ended with the USS Long Beach, the first and last true missle cruiser for the US Navy.

Dr. Friedman makes it clear the first cruisers were inspired by the old American civil war frigates. The first cruisers were designed as commerice raiders, scouts, and minor capital ships. This is not much different than the initial days of the US Navy in the 1790 era.

However, the US Navy takes a different view of the Spanish American war and produces a group of post-war cruisers that have interesting design characterists. They are slower, more expensive, and have greater weight than foreign ships.

American cruiser design goes into a sort of hybernation from about 1906 until 1918 when the Omaha class is invented. American cruisers in WWI were left over ships from the Spanish American war or oddly designed ships, such as the over gunned & over armored USS Pennsylvania & Tennessee class armored cruisers.

The Treaty cruisers of the 20s and 30s are the halcyon days of cruisers. Actually, a proper technical term for cruisers are "small, light, very fast battleships".

Dr. Friedman writes that none of the Treaty cruisers are bad designs. Yes, there is stability problems but that is from treaty limits on warship weight and not from bad designs from the US Navy. Indeed, the Cleveland & Baltimore class cruisers are some of the most outstanding designed cruisers from WWII. The incorporation of the Combat Information Center (CIC) was the point where the US Navy was able to integrate the full use of ships, weapons, command, and control and beat the Japanese navy in every battle post 1943.

The cruiser mission largely died after WWII. Basically, most of the cruisers were either converted to missile cruisers, a job that was taken over by the later frigates. Else, cruisers were used for shore bombardment.

Dr. Friedman takes a reader from the start of the New Navy, the 1900s era of cruisers, the treaty cruisers, the war production cruisers (basically, improved Brooklyns), the non-treaty cruisers which become the Alaska battlecruisers (the only new battlecruisers made during WWII), the post war cruisers, and ends the book on cruisers with a near chapter devoted to the Long Beach.

It's almost with sadness that Dr. Friedman writes that the augmented Spruance destroyer - the Ticonderga class cruiser - is a successor to the real cruiser. The destroyer & the frigate have taken over the job of the cruiser. And the true cruiser had been with the United States Navy since its inception back in the founding days of the republic.

Yes, this book is 10 out of 10. A novice will go away with a understanding of Cruisers. A Navy man will appreciate his roots.

Dr. Friedman is one of the best writers of technical material in America. If you buy this book, like I did, it will start to show wear from constant use.

If you are a cruiser fan throw away all of your other reference books and get this one. The book traces the history of the U.S. cruiser and it's development with great pictures, drawings and charts. Every class of cruiser is treated in detail with particular emphasis on the many WW2 classes and variations. Especially intresting is the detail given to the modificiations of pre Dec.7 1941 ships after experience in fighting those ships. If you are a modeler this book will be of great assistance in getting the detail you want on any particular ship. The book is worth every penny of the cost. I strongly reccomend for any admirer of some of the most beautiful ships this country has ever produced.

The Illustrated Design History series should be part of the collection of any naval enthusiast, and "Cruisers" is no exception. The book includes a detailed description of the evolution of each cruiser design in the modern U.S. Navy (which, as "enthusiasts" know, began in the last quarter of the 19th century). Those not familiar with the series should know this is not a mere picture book. You will read it from start to finish -- not just page through it -- and you will be rewarded.

Of particular value are the descriptions of hundreds of little-known alternative designs. The author is quite free with his pungent, well-informed and largely negative opinions concerning U.S. warship design. This too will keep you interested, through a sometimes highly technical volume.

The line-drawings included in this book are helpful -- and beautifully executed. Yet, one wishes for more of them, particularly as to the Lexington-class battlecruisers and other prominent alternative designs. The drawings of classes actually constructed are, again, well-done but not as comprehensive as the text.

The numerous black and white photographs are generally well-chosen. Some of the details mentioned in the captions are difficult to discern, however. The quality of photographic reproduction would have been better had the book been printed on glossy paper.

Overall, this is the best book of its kind, and yet it might have been better.

Great reference and excellent read!

Part of an amazing series (Battleships, Destoryers etc.), this book captures the history of the Cruiser in the US Navy.
The discussions of evolution of Cruiser design through each class, along with a discussion of the external factors in the design (the Washington Treaty, budget, Navel Politics...) is fasinating. Any Big ship/big gun fan will return to this book over and over again. The photos are incredable, especially when you have the pre war config, early wartime config, battle damage and analysis, and detailed photos of refit.

This book goes a long way in helping to undrestand the weeknesses of US Cruiser design that contributed to many of the problems faced early in the war, and the changes made as a result. Not being a Naval Officer, much of the thought processes involved in trading armor for speed or guns, stability issues, and armerment mix were a mystery. This book makes sense of these issues, and provides a look into elements of the Navy one might otherwise never consider.

A must for anyone seriously interested in warships!

This book falls into the category of books you don't want to put down until you have finished.

If you have been touched by autism you will get the serious goose bump effect. However, you don't have to have autism in your life to appreciate the usefulness of this book. All children could benefit from what Judy has learned through treating her son's autism.

This is the only book out there that explains the benefits of SCD specific to autism. You will hear first hand accounts from Judy as well as other mothers. This is coupled with comprehensive information Dr. Sidney Baker adding the medical perspective.

This book is a perfect compliment of human experience and useful scientific information. It also provides the much needed "how to" information regarding SCD.

This book is too important not to read!

I found this book to be highly illuminating and relevant for our times, when so many children--and their parents--are suffering in what is truly an "autism epidemic". Many children might benefit from the diet Judy Chinitz discusses in this book, if only more people knew about it. The way the author combines information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet with personal narrative makes it a suprisingly good read.
Today I googled the author and discovered that she has a website, [....]

The reality of what this author, Judy Chinitz, has proclaimed can not be underestimated. As a 32 year veteran teacher, I was always well aware of the link between diet and behavior. (The popular hot dog lunches were the worst!) The claim made by the author, and backed by Dr. Baker and the cited case studies, can not and should not be ignored. This is a sad story; but at the same time, it is wonderful, insightful and informative. I recommend that it be read by all parents ---- not just those that have children with autism.

As a consultant in autism nutrition, I have found this book to be an excellent resource for parents of children on the autism spectrum who want to start the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

It is wonderful to have a book written by a parent who has been there. Judy lets you know what to expect and how to get through the rough patches. Invaluable.

I would not hesitate in recommending "We Band of Mothers".

This is a little book, but it is a great book! I love it when I find a new little book like this one that is such a treasure. You can take it with you everywhere, and pick it up and read a few pages when you have time. I started reading my copy when I was spending an hour with the Lord during Eucharistic Adoration. It certainly gave me a lot to think about. After I went home, I read some more, and before I went to bed I read a little more, and then again in the morning. I also think this is one of those books that I will pick up again and again over the years for inspiration and to help keep me on track.

The collaboration of Fr. Groeschel and Bishop Baker has produced an excellent book to help us see Christ in our lives. Bishop Baker tells us that Matthew 25 provides the spiritual framework for living the Christian life. If you never read any other part of the Bible, read this and there will be no question as to what you must do to follow Jesus.

You will find yourself asking: Did I see the Lord in the poor, in the hungry and thirsty, the sick, those who needed clothing, those in prison, the stranger next to me? The Lord is always there, we just don't always take the time to recognize him. Fr. Groeschel challenges us to open our eyes and see what we can do in our communities and families. At the end of the book he gives suggestions on how to get started doing charitable work if you are not already involved.

How This Book Came to Be

The genesis of this book was inspired by a set of talks that Father Benedict J. Groeschel C.F.R., gave several years ago in the Diocese of Manchester, NH. At the time while researching material for a project I was working on I came across an advertisement for the talks and found both the title and topic striking. The topic seemed to fit Father Benedict's lifetime of working among the poor and raising money to help their plight. I approached him, shortly after listening to the tapes and asked him to consider doing a book version. He liked the idea but was reluctant to pursue the project alone due to the shortage of time available to work on it.
Unwilling to let go of the project, I approached another friend of the poor, Bishop Robert J. Baker of the Diocese of Charleston. I knew that Bishop Baker's priestly ministry had been devoted to finding Christ in the poor and with a wealth of experience he had in this area that if I could join his thoughts with Fr. Groeschel' s we would have a book that would be of great benefit to the rest of us. After approaching Bishop Baker with my request he agreed and then Father Benedict agreed to collaborate on this book.
While the Bishop and Father Benedict were working on the written text of the book I came across a stunning work of iconography one day while visiting an Eastern Catholic church. On the back wall of the church was an icon of the Last Judgment taken from Matthew 25. I found that the great iconographer Mila Mina had written the icon. I immediately contacted Mila and asked if the icon might be used as an illustration for this book, her response was "anything to make the Gospel known!" Thanks to Mila and her son Father John Mina for allowing Joyce Duriga and David Renz to photograph the icon at Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, Clairton, PA.
Fr. Groeschel has written the introductory text that begins each section as well as the final "What Should I Do?" at the end of the book, and Bishop Baker has written the individual meditations and prayers contained in each of the six sections.
While this book was being written, Father Benedict was involved in a horrific accident that nearly took his life. At the time of the accident the text he was working on was in his suitcase. He had just finished the introduction to "When I was a stranger..." as you read over the text for that section you might sense that he was having a premonition of what was about to happen in his life-where he would soon be in an emergency room under the care of doctors, nurses and as well as his family and religious community.
You will find that this book provides you with keys to finding Our Lord in the poor, and to overcoming the fears and obstacles (represented by the seven deadly sins in each section) that prevent you from responding to His call.

I've read all of Fr. Groeschel's books, and this collaberation between Bishop Baker and him is one of my very favorites. It gives an in-depth look at Christ's mandate to care for the poor. It also provides deep insight into the kind of thinking that prevents people from doing the right thing for their neighbor...all the prideful sins and selfishness that can kill our sense of charity. As a Third Order Franciscan, this topic has special meaning to me. I need such guidance to remind me what the real priorities must be in this life. I heartily recommend this book to everyone--it will touch your heart in many ways!
