As a parent of ten children (now grown) and a first grade teacher of 7 years now, I love this book-as do my students. It is colorful, encourages imaginative thinking and easy to follow. I use it for our animal unit as well as discussing story elements.

A gentle reminder that we are not all so different after all.

My two young boys love this book - just as they love The Magic Fan by the same author. It's one of their favorite bedtime stories.

The illustrations feature some of the most beautiful colors and overall design. My kids really like the way the artwork goes all the way to the edge of the page.

We'll probably buy everything else by this author.

I have no children of my own but have been a nanny for 6 years. Of all the stories I've read . . . this is by far the best! I give it to every person I know with children! Thank you for such a wonderful story, such beautiful artwork and such wonderful sounds!

This is a true picture book-as the pictures tell the story beyond the words. The illustrations go the distance for story time reading, as well as working for up close inspection (be sure to look for that unconcerned snail on every page!). I just never tire of this book and its illustrations, and I have been a fan of it for six years. The illustration of carp, tiger, and jungle folliage provide visual saturation satisfaction. The simple repetitious rhymes are fun to say, they roll off the lips in a way not always found in rhyming text, with wonderful repeating sounds. The story message is sweet, loud and clear, yet subtle at the same time. Thank you for this gem, Mr. Baker!

What Preceeded the Golden Age of American Comics

I am a fan of the "Golden Age" of American Comics which ran from the late 1930's through the 1940's. "The World on Sunday" is a compilation of some of the best graphic art that appeared in Joseph Pulitzer's "The World" from 1898 to 1911. Most fans of American comic book history know about the history of the early American comic strips of this period. The creators of the Golden Age undoubtedly were influenced by these early comic strips. However, they always were profoundly influed by the rich visual art work that came out in the newspapers of the era. "The World on Sunday" is beautifully produced and is a must purchase for all those interested in American popular culture. Finally, I would also recommend Cordula Lebeck's "Kiosk". In this volume, Lebeck follows the development of popular journalism into the age of photography in the 1930's.

A lush example of newspaper history at its finest.

Joseph Pulitzer's New York WORLD flourished at the turn of the 20th century and grew from a modern daily paper to a sensationalist publication packed with striking colorful art, from photos to cartoons and drawings. THE WORLD ON SUNDAY gathers over a hundred of the best from WORLD and places them in an oversized presentation to display their color on single and double-page spreads. A chronological arrangement lends to a fine sequence of reproductions tracing editorial and news highlights of the times, while colorful commentary accompanies the pieces and provides the necessary background for appreciation by all audiences. THE WORLD ON SUNDAY: GRAPHIC ART IN JOSEPH PULITZER'S NEWSPAPER (1898-1911) is a top pick not just for art or newspaper library holdings, but for general-interest collections as well: it captures the art, craft and style of a bygone era and is a lush example of newspaper history at its finest.

A treasure of a lost time and a lost art. Aside from the short-life expectancy and lack of modern conveniences like, uh, cars, ATMs, antibiotics, radio, microwave ovens, television, computers, etc., this book makes you wish you lived back then- when science, technology, and journalism were in their infancy and every day held some new, authentic wonder- not just a smaller cell phone. It's also quite amazing to see how advertisements, typefaces, layouts, and prose have radically changed in a century, and not necessarily for the better- unless you're one of those "Form Follows Function" kooks. A must for all you Luddites out there.

As a librarian, I am horrified, but unfortunately not too surprised to learn that few libraries have kept back issues of the newspaper put out by one of the great figures in USA publishing. And that's before I saw how beautiful it is! The idea that not only all this information but all this art was nearly lost is appalling. (I'm glad Duke University took it, but I hope the gift requires them to return it if they decide to throw it out.) I've been on the losing end of these fights, and no, one can't always assume that someone else kept the material.

Meanwhile, enjoy a glorious and gorgeous piece of historic publishing. I had no idea that color printing was so widely used ad so good at such an early time. The pictures often show great artistic skill and witty humor. There are also some fascinating bits of newpaper history.

A fantastic gift to the nation and the world. I can only show my appreciation by buying my own copy.

Thank you NIcholson and Margaret!!

This book celebrates one of the high points in American popular culture. In the late 1800's, Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World, purchased the first great high quality color printer for newspapers. He then used it to publish beautiful color graphics every Sunday. This is both great art and great entertainment. But the story of how the author Nicholson Baker and his wife, Margaret Brentano, tracked down the last surviving complete collection of this work just before it was to be lost forever is just as thrilling. This is an exquisite book that is the product of great work by great people. Get ready to enjoy a true treasure.

This book speaks to your heart, and preaches the gospel into your every-day life. It's refreshingly "practical". I've been using it as a devotional, too, writing notes and thoughts in the margins of the pages and around the beautiful black & white photographs.

It also makes a perfect gift!

Excellent collection of brief, one page devotionals with a photo on the opposite page. Good for couples' devotions. The interesting photos carry along the water theme of the book. The common theme is that the grace of God extends to believers through all of their lives: We are saved by grace and live by grace as well, not by law-keeping or our own performance. We are accepted by the Father because of Christ's finished work, we can rest from our own. The author gently shows us the many ways we lapse back into justifying ourselves needlessly. Well worth the read.

I really, really loved this book. So many times I've run ahead of God, taken things into my own hands, forgot to ask Him what I should do. Too many times, He's had to pick me up, dust me off, and dry my tears. I found myself in most of these devotionals. Each one spoke to my heart. C. David Baker points out a valuable truth; it's our failures that lead us closer to God. Each time we fall, each time we fail, and come seeking mercy and forgiveness, He not only gives us what we need, our dependence on His grace and mercy strengthens the bond between us.
He starts out by asking if we're the prisoner of good intentions, and I think, truthfully, most of us are. But sometimes good intentions can run ahead of good judgment, and that's when we need to sip from one of these cups.
The first cup is a Cup of Grace, followed by a Cup of Signifiance, a Cup of Abundnce, a Cup of Dependence, and more and more refreshing cups, each touching me in some way.
This book should have a place on every Christian's bookshelf. Strongly recommended.

Baker opens his heart and lets us in on a secret: he's a failure at living the Christian life... but he shows us that failures look to Jesus and in our weakness we become strong in his strength.

So many Christian books intending to inspire just feed the empty promise of self-effort but Baker challenges us to give up and dare to believe in God's grace through Jesus Christ based on what he objectively accomplished on our behalf 2000 years ago on the cross! Each of the 101 cups is a sip of applied truth of a believer's sonship.

We should hand these out like carrot sticks to our friends hung up on self-absorbed law keeping (especially the worst legalists I know: me, myself and I)...

101 Cups of Water: Relief and Refreshment for the Tired, Thirsty Soul by C.D. Baker is an absolutely charming book. It's a small hardcover filled with simple black and white photos that compliment essays by Baker about faith and the human spirit. Each essay fills only one page, and with titles like A Cup of Healing and A Cup of Strength, it's easy to find one to suit the needs of your spirit whatever the circumstance. The essays are written in first person, so it's easy to relate and learn along with the writer. I really enjoyed reading a few essays each night. I'd flip through the book looking for a title or picture that caught my eye, and then the essay would capture my heart. This book would make a terrific gift for yourself or someone else.

This book clearly outlines how God has been working, is working, and will continue to work to redeem Mankind. The authors demonstrate, as reflected in the subtitle "The Story of God's Mission in the Bible," that God's redemptive plan began with Old Testament prophets and the Nation of Israel. His Plans culminates with Jesus Christ of Nazareth and continues with His Church. "Announcing the Kingdom" is an excellent companion to the textbook (a Reader edited by Winter and Hawthorne) used in the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course. Every Believer should take this course; every Believer should read the book by Glasser, et. al.

i thought that the book was a great introduction to the idea of the kingdom of God and its role in the entire Bible. The book was written in a scholarly fashion, but was accessible to anyone with Biblical knowledge. It sets a great foundation for anyone who is serious about critical Biblical interpretation and especially the influence of the Kingdom of God on the Bible. It brought me great insight and appreciation to what the Bible discusses about Kingdom and its power in my own life.

Although a long read, it's an excellent book on God's mission from Genesis to Revelation. Included in this book are many insight addressing issues in modern missions today such as ethics and strategy. Would make a great text for a biblical theology of missions class. Great for the seminarian, possibly challenging to the layperson.

Having read 5 well-published books within a timespan of 3 months on the subject of the Kingdom of God, this book was the most thorough and thought provoking. It's one downfall is the author's propencity to be sidetracked from the main subject at hand and his use of secular humanistic venacular. Besides these, it is very comprehensive and a joy to read yet not written for one's first book on the subject. If looking for an introductory book, look into Roberts's book entitled: God's Big Picture.

Hond's book has a profundity seldom found in fiction today. Racial and class conflict are illuminated brilliantly and sympathetically. The descriptions of the inner city, of suburban middle America, of the old French bakery, are vivid and fascinating. The characters likewise attain a lifelike status: at times, the reader feels as though they are real people she/he might know. This is most true of the title role, Mickey Lerner, trapped between the past and the future, as well as his son Benjamin, caught between Gen-X-dom, cold capitalistic ambition, and the child needing to be loved. Nelson is a little more of a type, the boy-trying-to-escape-the-ghetto. Though there are points where the story seems to lag, the plotting is superb overall; subplot is used to good effect. Hond's prose flows like poetry!

A powerful and surprising tale of urban race relations.

Review Date: 1998-03-17
Paul Hond's The Baker is a powerful and surprising first novel. Hond draws the world of Mickey Lerner, who runs a kosher bakery in Baltimore on the border between a Jewish neighborhood and a crime-ridden black neighborhood. He surrounds Lerner with solid, fully-drawn characters, complete with flaws, prejudices, and insecurities: Emilie, his cool French violinist wife; his undirected eighteen-year old son Benjie; Nelson, the teenaged, black driver for the bakery; and Donna, Nelson's gentle and voluptuous mother in whom Mickey sees the softness Emilie lacks. Tribalism and the temptation and hazards of crossing tribal boundaries permeate The Baker-the clannishness of Hond's working-class Jews; the mutual suspicion in the novel's black/white relationships; and Mickey's strained relationship with Emilie, who is ever the outsider looking in even after two decades in the U.S. Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities quickly comes to mind, not only because of the common theme of urban race relations but more importantly because Hond shares Wolfe's gift of creating the voices of his characters, complete with dialect, accent, and cadence, and his use of voice to position his characters in society. Hond also adapts his style to capture his characters' emotions: Benjie's thoughts flow into Faulknerian run-ons during a moment of panic about Emilie's distance, Mickey's dialogue of incomplete sentences during a tormented trip of self-discovery to Paris. The plot is as surprising as Hond's craft is deft. Hond creates a world of violence-physical aggression and abrupt decisions. Each plot turn comes as a complete surprise, such that the reader fully shares the characters' sense of shock. Because communication is more of a void than a bridge among Hond's characters, Mickey, Emilie, and Benjie announce decisions to one another, then leave the other to decipher the meaning. Emilie, in particular, is an enigma, and the deeply self-doubting Mickey and Benjie struggle to comprehend her distance. Hond's Baker also teems with passion, sensuousness, and food. The pivotal moments of Mickey's life are marked by bread and pastry, beginning with the beautifully-drawn explosive, first sexual encounter between Mickey and Emilie on the flour-covered bakery worktable. If The Baker has one weakness, it is that the sexual imagery of food is at times heavy-handed.

An urban morality play that is raised to the level of myth. There is a lot of emotional power in this book, and also many truthful social observations that make it seem as though these are real people in real situations. Though the racial aspect of the conflict in this book is certainly important, what is most powerful is the moving depiction of a good man trying to overcome his failings. I don't want to analyze the plot because it wouldn't be fair to give away the suprises in the story. But suffice to say, there is a lot going on here, from the relationships between the protagonist, Mickey, and all the other characters--his wife, his son, a black employee and the employee's mother--to the boxing sequences and also the section in Paris, which is filled with sensuous descriptions about bread and baking. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good writing and a good story.

Who amongst us has not bitten into a fresh loaf of well-baked bread - just bread- and not known what bliss is? In a neighborhood of halfed baked, over stylized, designer designed commercial publishing "doughs", The Baker is a standout. Rising like a "well-needed" examination of urban life with all its racial implications scattered like kimmel (seeds)between the slices, The Baker is utterly satisfying and totally filling. Thank you Paul Hond for enriching all my senses, and especially my appetite for good books.-

The Baker is a rich, complex yet simple story of family love and the complexities of inter-racial as well as cross-cultural relationships. There are so many elements and relationships to think about...the son and his search for a nurtuting mother, the black friend/employee's place in the Bakers and his own family....a look at family business....crime, father-son love....and much more. It's so refreshing to read about characters thought processes while grapling with so many plot intricacies....Wonderful and memorable, thanks Paul Hond... please write more!!

This is a must read for anyone - rich or poor - young or old. I was intrigued by the simplicity of the 13 principles - yet energized by their importance. I think this is exactly the book every parent should give their children.

As a parent, I sat down with my 12 year old and we read it together. I was chagrined by some of his questions as he started to understand the principles and wanted to know what I had done.

This is a great book for teenagers who need to learn to budget and for adults who are ready to start planning for retirement. The discussion of compound interest taught me concepts I had never understood, let alone applied.

BRAVO! This book should be included as part of the school curriculum in High Schools everywhere.

I think this book should be mandatory reading before a child graduates from HS. It could be a text book for an economics class. It's too bad so few people know about it. Get this book for your HS graduate and you won't have to support them the rest of their life. They will learn good habits and avoid making serious mistakes.

My hat off to the author for his insight and wisdom.

I'm not sure what I enjoyed the most - the photos, the recipes or the stories. Like so many people, I've had a love of cooking and fear of baking... until Baking From The Heart. While thumbing through my new copy, I stopped at Mohn Kickle, a poppy seed cookie I grew up eating but hadn't heard of or thought about in 20 years. As I read the introductory story by chef Lora Brody, I couldn't stop laughing as she shares hilarious stories about her parent's culinary skills. I decided to bake something that my 2 1/2 year old would enjoy and settled on David Lebovitz's peppermint patties. We loved them - as did everyone in my office the next day. I felt like such a big shot, making candy at virtually my first baking attempt. I hit a few bumps along the way but in the end, they looked and tasted delicious. Now I want to try literally every recipe in the book starting with the Flan Almendrado.

Great holiday gift - but buy one for yourself too!

I have to say that I've never enjoyed reading a cookbook as much as this one. The stories are so much fun to read. If you like to bake, or want to start baking, you will really enjoy this collection - and knowing that proceeds will go to fight hunger makes it that much better.

I collect baking cookbooks and one of the reasons that I purchased this one is because there is recipes in here that I have not seen in any other book. Very original.

I've been fans of these "Janes" for awhile so when I saw that they had a book, I had to be one of the first to get it. I'm very glad that I did. One of my favorite and most interesting projects in the book is changing the face of your appliances to stainless steel. I was planning on buying all brand new appliances until I learned that you could do it with stainless steel adhesive. These girls definitely rock! If you are a first time homeowner like me and short on money to pay a contractor, then this book is a must!

Great, inspirational book!

I really love the way the book is laid out. Very useful information combined with great photos and inspiration for why you should take on home improvement! This book makes home improvement approachable and is truly empowering as the title suggests.

This is a great book and very interesting for everyone, not just artistic photographers. I love it! The only thing that was disappointing was that the label on the back of the book put on by Amazon was incredibly sticky and very hard to remove. I nearly damaged the book trying to get it off so be careful. Rubbing alcohol and a dull scraper of some kind works pretty good.

When I first saw this book in a book store last December, and began looking through the pages, my eyes welled up with tears at the sheer poetry of the images. It was as if doors opened into other levels of awareness. When I put the book down, I realized that I had been looking at it for over an hour, and that's when I knew I simply needed to own it. Since then, the detail and depth of the images have provided a refuge from the news in the world today. There is still beauty and peace. Thank you, Abe Morell.

Some of the photographs in Abelardo Morell's A Book of Books are of great books: A Tale of Two Cities, A Farewell to Arms, Alice in Wonderland. And in placing these photographs together in this wonder-filled volume, Morell has created a great book of his own. For like all great books, this one makes you see the familiar in new ways; offers layers upon layers of meaning; and pushes you to make connections among objects and ideas that sometimes appear to have little, if anything, in common. At the same time, it is a glorious book to look at, to sink into, again and again. If you love books, you'll love this one.

Exquisite.

Everything Abelardo Morell does is gorgeous but what makes him such a genius is the mudane things he works with. The only photographer I can compare him to is Josef Sudek.

Let's be honest. Anybody can go to a beautiful place like Yosemite or Big Sur, take a view camera and wait for nice light. Instant Ansel Adams; you can't miss unless you kick the tripod.

But how many people can make a heartbreakingly beautiful photograph from a crumpled ball of paper or some peeling paint? Get this book of books and you'll see what I mean.

My husband is friends with Chipper. He has known him for a while and didn't have a clue about this accident. Just today his wife was talking to my husband about Chipper's accident, we didn't have a clue, so she gave him a book. Neither of us could put it down. I have become a better person by reading this book. I am truely amazed at the perserverance of this man and the trials he faced. His life is a miracle and a great example to us all. I highly recommend this book to everyone no matter what your situation is. It is very inspirational and has helped me to look at life in a different way.

What a wonderful book! I have a child who has a traumatic brain injury and was recommended this book by a website chatroom group who supports families living with brain trauma. We all have our own little trials to live through and sometimes it is very encouraging to know there is others who are going throught the same if not worse problems. I know now if I have patience and keep at it I can also live through my childs traumatic brain injury and be a better and stonger person for it. We need more people like the Mangum's who will share their story and give the world promise and inspiration. There have been times when I thought I could not go on or I can not fight this battle any longer and along came this book and helped me to not feel so sorry for myself. I hope there is a sequel to the rest of Chipper's story because it leaves the reader hungry for more. Thank you for publishing and selling this book. I have recommended it to everyone including my children's school teachers.

A heart-wrenching story of tragedy & triumph by a suvivor!

Thank you so much for a wonderful true story that kept my children eager to hear more. I am a mother who reads to my 5 children a few minutes each night. The "Chipper" book is one of the only books I have read to my family where they wanted me to continue more and more every night. Because of the nature of the accident, the age of the boy and the fact that is was called a miracle--it really is a miracle. As a mother my heart was breaking for "Chipper's" mother and dad and the terrible circumstances they where forced to try to take control of. I do believe my children appreciate me more as a mother since we have finished this book. I will recommend this book to everyone--which is something considering the book choices we have for our children. Please contine to publish more true stories like this book. It is definately two thumbs up!

Heartwarming, courageous and best of all a true story.

This is a very humbling story of a tragic accident that marks a families lifestye forever. Chipper is the result of a severe blow to the head by a very large ponderosa pine tree. His friends frantically try tokeep him alive until life support and air ambulances pick him up. After months in a children's hospital and hours of brain surgery--emerges a totally different person. The Mangum family endure so many hardship-financially, emotionally, socially and spiritually. When Chipper returns home--the schools do not know how to teach this surviver of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), his friends no longer understand him and his family struggles to find a place for him in society. This heartwarming story will melt your heart and I promise you will cry a bucket of tears as you live through the struggles of this family. I will not give the ending away but if you believe in HOPE and MIRACLES--this book is a winner. I was so encouraged by the strength of the human heart and spirit that is probably in all of us. A fantasic true mother's story that she hopes no other mother is forced to live through. A must to read for all ages...only have kleenex handy...you will need it. It makes me want to know more about Chipper and his life today. Sometimes our lives are so full of darkness that we fell their is no light left in the world...this wonderful story has filled my life with so much sunshine, it makes the darkness not so hard to enddure. Thank you for the opportunity for me to comment on this book. I originally purchased this book for my school classroom but have since given many copies away to friends for Christmas. I even undertand a student of mine who was in a motorcycle accident and resulting in a brain injury. I really feel I can teach him after reading some of the wonderful ideas in this book. A real MUST for all classrooms.
