Main Street, Northeastern Oregon

Excerpt from book's back cover:

"Main Street, Northeastern Oregon details the early development of a fascinating variety of communities in one o this country's most remote and spectacular regions. Collectively and through case studies, the author follows their growth, adaptation to changing economies and social patterns, and frequently, their failure - out of 52 towns founded between 1862 and 1915, only 23 have survived to the 1980s.

Northeastern Oregon's earliest towns grew up along the Oregon Trail and stage routes, others soon appearing along newly built railroads and adjacent to rivers, in mining districts, agricultural valleys and timbered areas. Founded for a variety of reasons - to make their founders money, to serve passing traffic, or to supply surrounding districts - they developed at different rates, and each took on a unique character. As the economic and social hub of these towns, and their architectural showpiece, northeastern Oregon's main streets exhibit a wide, through not unpredictable, range of personalities.

Barbara Ruth Bailey demonstrated that the degree of each main street's physical development is a direct response to regional economics, the nature and number of the town's service population, and the confidence of local entrepreneurs in the town's future. As such, development follows a definite sequence, which Ms. Bailey, incorporating several years of personal observations and painstaking research, has described in this study, Main Street, Northeastern Oregon examines the history of a little-known region, based on colorful, sensitive and scholarly documentation of small-town main street evolution."

The Classic Plant Identification Book

Review Date: 2001-03-16
Lyberty Hyde Bailey, one of the first of Cornell University's long line of distinquished botanists has written some of the most important plant identification books in the library. All of his books are treasures to serious botanists and all are hard to find. Many of Bailey's books were used as textbooks but many were never resold; they are that valuble to botanists worldwide. This book is no exception. A valuable reference, it is used as a key to identify genus and species of many cultivated plants by providing such details as petal number, sepal number and location, fruiting habit, stamens and pistil appearance and placement and many more details necessary to plant identification. Bailey even includes the name of the scientists who gave the plant its first binomial nomenclature (the genus and species). Get this one if you can.

A good starting place to learn about the dairy industry.

A couple of months ago I began a new career as an economist for the USDA-AMS Dairy Programs. Although I have a master's degree in economics, I had no specific knowledge of the dairy industry. One of my colleagues recommended this book. Reading it helped me to quickly gain basic knowledge of pricing and marketing in the dairy industry.

This really helped me promote my mail order business

I run a two-man telesales mail order business. I bought this book because it seemed to be backed by some pretty big companies (Saachi & saachi, Virgin, Macromedia, Adobe and Sage according to the back cover), but despite this it has loads of advice for the smaller retailer.

This book is two books in one - the first half teaches you the theory. For me the best chapter was dealing with the press. This shows you that it's relatively easy to get free coverage in magazines. The second half of the book has practical guides - again the chapter on writing press releases was excellent. It literally takes you step by step to writing a press release, right down to how to phrase the title and how the final document should be formatted.

There is also a CD-ROM on the back. Although most of the software that's on there you'll find on the cover disc of most magazines there were a couple of jewels. There are also some tutorial videos (although there should have been a few more in my opinion).

If you run your own business are are look at ways to produce more material in-house but are not sure how to go about it I don't think you can go far wrong with this book.

Refreshingly modern
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-29
I've never been to Berlin but with the colourful description and athmosphere of Marlene Dietrich lived here I feel like I have. The story tells mainly of the brothers, Erich and Max, who try to come to terms with life both in their own way. They struggle to set the past so the present if not the future will be more endurable. The view of Berlin is exceptional and the characters refreshing, European and very believable. They are modern in a way that I have rarely seen before and the story leaves you short of breath and longing for more. It's a story of love, betrayal, a story from the past and of the future but mostly in the presence. A story about two brothers who need to come to terms with themselves and each other.

I warmly recommend this unique story.

fun images; high-end computer-generated graphics

nice simple story for the 7-8 year old who "doesn't like to read" and, yet, jammed through this book. I'm buying more of them, since the focus is getting boooks they like to read.

any younger-reader kid who likes rockets, space, etc., will like this.

Epic, Fact-Filled Prayer On Behalf of Whales
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-28
This is a big, beautiful, lavishly illustrated love tribute to the whale species. About half the pages are for Williams' grand, celebratory poem--a poem of beauty and stark fact-- about whales, that includes history, biology, all the ways whales have enriched our society, both living and as a product, the tragic aspects regarding the thoughtless, non-sacred killing of the great beasts and details of hunting and processing, etc. Indeed, Williams' epic seems to include all aspects of the culture of the whale. The second half of the book contains hundreds of fascinating quotes about whales, culled from nearly every epoch of written human history, and serves the reader as a virtual encyclopedia about whales. The book is illustrated throughout with fine photographs, including beautiful full color photos of whales alive and well in their natural habitat, to photos depicting the myriad ways humans have exploited and profited from the whale. This is a good book, a song celebrating the sacredness of whales and lamenting our human society that has for the most part taken them for granted. This book is both a prayer and a textbook, celebrating whales with compassion and passion, and educating about whales with fascinating facts, history and photos. It is a work of art, both simple and grand.
