Learning Can Be Fun!

I got this book along with several others for my first grader. We homeschool and are studying Ancient Egypt. We loved this book! This was by far my son's favorite. It is easy to find "photos and facts" types of book on Egypt, but this one adds a bit of fiction and adventure to the mix. It is kind of like the Magic Tree House books, but in a picture book format. The book is an adventure story with factual information listed at the bottom of each page (I guess sort of like Magic School Bus type books too). I will definitely be checking out the others in this series.

My 8 year old boy read this and immediately asked for more like this! He loved these books. They take the kids into the Middle Ages with three fictional kids from our time. Plus they fill it with fun facts from that time period. A great book, for learning and for fun reading!

Excellent Book

The book, Beauty Bound, written by Rita Freedman is a novel that will not only raise your self esteem, but also help to see life from another point of view. A lot of people can relate to this book because it deals with the number one issue in woman's lives. This issue is the constant obsession with trying to be beautiful and perfect.
Beauty Bound gives a variety of real life stores from real women who have had problems with themselves. If you were a woman reading this book, it could really help you get over trying to be beautiful and trying to impress others and make you feel like you're not the only one. It will help you to realize that all the material things and looking like models isn't the only thing that matters in life.
This book shows you the reality of all the beautiful woman on TV and in magazines. They aren't as perfect in the pictures and movies as they are in real life. The book makes you realize how dumb it is to care what others think of you when all you really should be doing is caring how you feel about your self.
The majority of all women have once in their life faced the issue of wanting to be beautiful. Whether you think you have or not, believe me, you have. The question is why? Why do women everyday spend hours upon hours putting on make up and doing there hair? To impress people that they don't even know? To impress people that they do know and who already love them for who they are? The answers to these questions are in this book.

One of the best overviews of the air war

This book will give you a good overview of the air war. You may read about actions, battles, or subjects that make you wish for more detail but this is hard to beat in a slim (208 pages) volume. Included are the usual Time-Life collection of hundreds of photographs, illustrations, color artwork of most aircraft, and maps that supplement clear and interesting narratives.

The Still Small Voice of Truth
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-04
John Bailey is in touch with a universal truth as he wrote this book. I found it reassuring that a lot of efforting was not the answer to my spiritual growth. His approach is step by step in increasing the awareness of the reader to the idea that "we're already there" and all is needed to "practice the presence". I thoroughly enjoyed reading this comforting book

I own the book and in all truth I wrote a small section of the book. (MY NAME IS JEFF KUKRAL) It is only a small part, but the book brings out the good of people and society not only the bad.

a highly readable critique of the haunted house tale
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-25
Bailey writes as you wish all academicians wrote (most, unfortunately, write tortured prose convulsing in theory, all scribbling madly toward tenure); Bailey is a much-needed exception: his prose is accessible; his criticism insightful; his observations often humorous. Dig this penetrating summation of Poe: "...three-fifths genius and two-fifths sheer fudge, that raving lunatic of American letters, that drunken pedophile dying in his Baltimore ditch." American Nightmares is a keen examination of the haunted house story and how it is inherently an American tale, how it is, in fact, a direct and dire result of our everyday obsessions with the American Dream. Bailey takes obvious delight in examining such pop icons as The Haunting of Hill House, The Amityville Horror, Burnt Offerings, and The Shining (and as he does, you can almost hear the wailings and gnashings of teeth from ivory towers across the country). In short, this book is a highly readable, vastly entertaining pop culture manifesto. It's a must-read for any horror aficionado, highly recommended for anyone interested in American lit, and suggested for all entertained by good prose and refreshing insight.

A memorable review of history
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-16
The author gives his personal reaction to the events and trends that make up U.S. history, and yet it is still a historical text. It was my textbook in high school and I long regretted that I had sold my copy back at the end of the year, but now I have it again! The author is not politically correct at times, since he wrote before political correctness came about, and his little jokes about certain women, blacks, immigrants, and various others sound rather bold in today's timid times, but he has a good heart and he makes history a pleasure.
