An intimate look at the birth and death of a town

During the 20th century, textiles because the number one industry in the Carolinas, with most of the mills being established along river banks for cheap power and close to the raw product supplies--cotton. To get workers, the mills built company owned housing. Cliffside is typical of hundreds of such communities. Reno Baily's passion for his home town comes through as he chronicles the life of Cliffside.

Cotton is no longer king. The textile industry has mostly moved to other countries. Cliffside held on much longer than many company towns. It is an important document for new generations who rarely will see an existing 'mill town'. Although the names mean little except to relatives and neighbors, it is important that this era in a community's life be kept alive. Reno has done that for Cliffside.

A glimpse of the past, present, and future of a town through images and words
Clear, sharp, bright photographs of people, places, and things allow the reader to catch the flavor of a mill town from the turn of the Twentieth Century until now. The captions are descriptive and at times even humorous. The real point of interest, however, is the people. The reader is encouraged to view the past but not to hold it too tightly. I recommend the book to other communities that have/had a textile industry, to those who want to look in the eyes of the people of past, and to those who want to find out more about life in a mill town. Experience a time gone by through this quality experience: CLIFFSIDE: Portrait of a Carolina Mill Town.

I bought volume 1 while in Tombstone last January. Unfortunately #2 wasn't available. I am finally purchasing #2 via Amazon. They are a fountain of information that strike to the core of many of these "stalwarts". The 1st was a valuable aid in my historical/genealogical research and I know the 2nd will be even better!!!

Great resource, great browsing

"Cochise County Stalwarts" is a compilation of biographical essays about hundreds of the men and women who lived (and sometimes died) in or near Tombstone, Arizona, back in the days of the "Wild West". Some names are familiar to anyone versed in Western history: Wyatt Earp, Johnny Ringo, and Buckskin Frank Leslie. But most of the people profiled in the book would come under the heading of "ordinary citizens", even if sometimes they led rather extraordinary lives. This is a book which provides a wealth of background information behind the famous story of the "Gunfight at the OK Corral" (of course, it really wasn't at the OK Corral, but "Gunfight in the empty lot down the street" just doesn't have the same ring to it), but is also highly enjoyable to browse through, learning about the fascinating people history usually does not mention.

Implementing Win 2000 technolgies in the real world

Review Date: 2001-11-19
This book is about implementing the new technologies of Win 2000 in the real world. The author's exposure and experience in the industry makes this book full of tips in practical implementation. Despite being a Win 2000 MCSE myself, I am enjoying and immensely benefiting reading this book as I go by its pages.

This one sails you through executing the new and difficult-to-implement technologies of Win 2000 like IPSec, NAT, DNS, Certificates services, Terminal services etc. through its nice walkthrough(s). Even basics like MMC have been explained in great detail. Such detail work e.g. devoting 63 pages to IPSec definitely helps concept building.

In summary, an excellent book for the dollars you pay. I hope the author soon attempts a book on Configuring Win 2000 with Active Directory: I for one will keenly look forward to it.

One of Jesus' most astonishing stories, a story that has resonated down through the ages, is commonly known in English as The Prodigal Son. In this book, Kenneth Bailey retells this familiar story through the eyes of Middle Eastern peasants.

Bailey is a longtime missionary, a man who has spent his life among the peasants of the Middle East. Bailey really knows village life. And that makes all the difference in understanding Jesus' story.

But this book is much more than another commentary. Bailey (along with IVP) has made a beautiful book. There are several plates decorated with Arab calligraphy, and half the book is a four-scene drama - a retelling of the story in a small village, complete with the score to one of the characters' songs. This is an exemplary work, engaging heart and mind at once.

Ken Bailey is the best New Testament scholar around today because he brings deep insight and experience from the Middle Eastern culture combined with attention to form criticism. The result is an eye opening and inspiring work on the Prodigal. You will not be disappointed in this book or any of his work.

In Crossing Nebraska, Ms. Bailey has given us an insider's look at 1849, and the traumatic changes that were occurring on the Great Plains as white settlers clashed with Indian culture. She has done her homework on the history. The setting and characters she has created in this tender, exciting, thought-provoking love story will come alive for you and live on in your heart long after you've finished the book.

Changes--

There was a time in history when the new met with the old. When the east met with the west. Change.

It happened to Maggie.

Behind a covered wagon bound for Oregon, Maggie worried. Worried about her future. Worried about who she was to become. Worried about this strange longing she had towards a certain Indian.

It happened to Horse Rider.

His curiosity piqued, he watched the wagons cross his land. He smelled the scent of change in the air. He felt the restlessness in his heart--especially when he watched the white woman that stood across the river. Was he crazy like his friends said?

Thank you for previewing my book.

Of beauty and the senses

Review Date: 2007-01-07
Bailey's language is of beauty and the senses, each scene surrounding the reader, evoking new feelings from events common and no so common. Whether Bailey speaks in the voice of a woman, an adolescent boy, a bigoted prison guard, or of what is "free" in the voice of an African-American pilot, or one of the other men whom we are glad to have known, each voice rings true. The characters in the first story are brought back with grace and beauty in his first published novel THE GRACE THAT KEEPS THIS WORLD. Amen to Joyce Carol Oates: these stories are "richly imagined and sensitively crafted."

"Crow Man" is an excellent collection of short fiction. Bailey's writing sucks the reader into the story, making it feel as if you ARE the main character. "Snow Dreams," the first story in the book, is gutwrenching. His profound understanding of how to craft a story is remarkable. Aspiring writers would be wise to also check out "On Writing Short Stories" and "A Short Story Writer's Companion." Look for Bailey's writing to really take off in popularity in the near future.

Practical advice for the small investor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-02
I agree with the other reviewer's praise of the authors writing style. Their prose is elegant and they make use of examples to paint a clear picture of the concept for their readers.

I am an experienced investor and found it insightful and enjoyable. But I imagine a beginner would also benefit. The concepts are so well explained I thought it might make an excellent textbook for a college course.

There is a very interesting section that describes the authors' research into long-term investment cycles and how to best match an investment type to a particular cycle. The authors have included all of their research in the form of tables, but you can skip the tables and read just their conclusions and advice.

The author has also included his real brokerage statements as an appendix. I didn't read these. I suppose they are there to add credibility to his outstanding track record.

My favorite section was a scholarly recap of all of the different types of psychological biases that afflict investors. These can be helpful in gaining a trading advantage on other investors or can be therapeutic in evaluating your own trading foibles.

I also liked the section where they took you through a typical trading day and shared their routines for gathering and analyzing data. This section had lots of miscellaneous tips and practical trading techniques that the reader can employ.

I received the book as a gift, but I would gladly have bought it and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in being a better stock trader.

The Thinking Person's Guide To Wise Investing

Review Date: 2004-10-05
I have not yet carefully reviewed every chart in this thoroughly well researched book, but I have read the text, and I think it is the finest, most insightful investment book ever written --which is perhaps reflected in the author's astonishing performance.

I would recommend this book to every person who invests in stocks---even if only in mutual funds.

Mr. Matson is obviously exceedingly well educated and qualified, and perhaps just plain brilliant, so wading through some of the book it is a bit tough. Nevertheless, if anyone wants a truly superb, incisive education in actually making a great profit in the stock market, this book, more than any other I have read (including Lynch, Makiel, Buffet, Graham, etc.), is the one to buy and study.

One caveat---I doubt that Mr. Matson would be able to achieve the same astonishing peformance were he managing a portfolio of more than, say $100M, as the methodology he uses seems to me to be more uniquely suited to small stocks otherwise unsuitable for very large portfolios.

But, for the average investor, and anyone who has less than, say $5 million, invested in the market, this book should be your Bible.

Truly a stupendous effort, and an outstanding book richly laden with insights helpful to the somewhat sophisticated average investor.

This book is definitely a gem.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. Ms. Bailey does such a wonderful job describing, not only the global atmosphere but also the little nuances. Her characters are drawn with broad strokes and they truly grow on you. It's fascinating how slowly she's developing the relationship between the Chief and Lizzie. I'm such an impatient person, but I find myself savoring the build-up of two people getting to know each other. I hope they've covered much more ground, however, if and when the next installment is published. I truly hope there is another book, because it is original and fresh - truly entertaining.
