This is a fabulous book, the type that you can sit with for hours and enjoy. It is reminiscent of Sante D'Orazio's first book, but on a much simpler scale. The photos are great, the commentary a little bare-bones but interesting. As a photographer, it's also interesting to see how different photographers have captured the same subject, sometimes more than once. Highly recommended and nicely published.

This is a reprint of the original Gutheil score issued when the work was published. Sometimes I wish that empty staves could have been eliminated, but given how time and again instruments not expected at the moment are nevertheless called upon, that's a minor fault at worst. Very legible, authoritative and a pleasure to have - be it in one's lap when following, or on the podium for conducting! Buy it!!

I found this book a great advancement for my self study of Italian. There are countless verb book and dictionaries but not too many that tackle pure grammer. Using the CD you can do and redo the exercises. After covering the whole book I still use it often as a great reference. Title is accurate as it explains in a easy way the structures and components of italian grammer.

So much of Golden is folklore and lie. It is refreshing, therefore, to have an accurate primary
source on what the man really said. This compilation of quotes, quips, and wisdom was made by
Arnold Dee White, who was Golden's secretary for several years, and was the eulogy spoken at
Golden's funeral.

The format is in a long "deep thoughts" books that were popular five years ago, so each page has
about one thought on it. It has great font, and is readable and friendly. Come on-it's J. Golden
Kimball; how can you go wrong!?

It probably doesn't get better than this: the insights of an informed and engaging professor on an endlessly fascinating subject, delivered by a compelling performer. Having said that, audio books take some getting used to, particularly if you're used to reading at your own speed. The risk is greater with fiction readings, which can sound so disastrously different than the book, but the potential is also greater. With a non-fiction reading like this one, it's pretty much just about someone reading a book. That said, what would matter greatly is the book and the someone reading it. This book, reprinted from an earlier edition, is a bestseller for Ignatius Press, and Matthew Arnold's reading is subtle and nuanced. He reads the book's ten chapters on five CDs. At first it seemed he was reading very fast, but by the second chapter my brain had adjusted and settled in. It was like hearing a lecture where for some reason you could hear the professor without the distractions of a lecture hall, and more remarkably, he spoke distinctly and didn't drop his notes. The CDs revealed to me what reading the book did not: this could be a college telecourse (except it's not on TV) because you learn so much listening to it. The production is very clean and sparse except for brief instrumental snippets of Celtic tunes like "Be Thou My Vision" at the open and close of chapters. Matthew Arnold has also read other audio books for St. Joseph Communications (saintjoe.com), which seems to specialize in Catholic books. This audio book is also available on cassette, and these first editions may be collector's items because Purtill's name is misspelled "Purthill," which makes it hard to find in search engines. Although this is my first audio book, if others are as good as this one, it won't be my last.

A good look at Joyce and his work

This little book tells succinctly a lot about Joyce's life and his work. The author rightly points out that the Church furnished Joyce an excellent free education, and that it is in the nature of persons who feel inferior to lash out at that to which they owe gratitude. Much that Joyce did in his private life was stupid, and one cannot admire much of his behavior. The book also examines his work and gives a worthwhile summary of it. The author confirms for me the wisdom of not trying to read Finnegan's Wake--it simply is not worth the effort which would be necessary to make any sense out of it.

My 92-year-old mother had lost her vision and her mobility, and her greatest pleasure was doing the Jumbles together. We would read them and she would usually beat us getting the answers. It was a blessing to have this book in her final days.

This is a very well written (read edited) book. The intention of the author, Dr. Jude Arnold, is clear from her brief introduction to the last Journal entry of her beloved sister, Jan. The purpose: to pay a loving honor and tribute to her twin sister Jan. Anyone who reads this book shall come to know intimately, both Jan and Dr. Jude. This is a delightful, easy, and profoundly moving read.

Solid Chord Melody Arrangements

Review Date: 2006-12-19
Review Date: 2006-12-19
This is really a great collection of jazz ballads arranged for guitar. I have become pretty skeptical of this type of collection because usually the arrangers either take shortcuts to create arrangements that are too simple, or they over harmonize and use unnecessarily difficult chord substitutions. This collection is guilty of neither of these errors. The keys in almost every case are the same keys the songs were published in and the arrangements are standard jazz chord melody chords. Nothing too advanced, but a good solid performance level interpretation of the harmony. The tunes selected are excellent choices and even the lesser known tunes are beautiful and well worth learning. Most intermediate to advanced players will find themselves subing in some of their own favorite substitutions, but that is what should happen. Even played exactly as arranged, all the chord choices are extremely apt and musical. My only minor complaint is that the endings are routinely unimaginative. Most of the tunes just end on the same sixth chord voicing. I usually just sub in some other favorite ending chord sequences.
The tunes included are:
* A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square
* Blame It On My Youth
* Body And Soul
* But Beautiful
* Darn That Dream
* Easy Living
* Easy To Love (You'd Be So Easy To Love)
* Here's That Rainy Day
* I Could Write A Book
* In A Sentimental Mood
* In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
* Long Ago (And Far Away)
* Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)
* Misty
* Moonlight In Vermont
* My Foolish Heart
* My Funny Valentine
* My One And Only Love
* Nancy - With The Laughing Face
* Skylark
* Stella By Starlight
* The Nearness Of You
* The Very Thought Of You
* The Way You Look Tonight
* Time After Time
* When I Fall In Love
* When Sunny Gets Blue

Birth of U.S. Calvary or What R.E. Lee was doing in 1850s

Arnold has a gift for military history that while informative of facts is also a good read. He makes history interesting even to the casual reader. This book fills what is usually a gap in US military history and a blank in most accounts of R.E. Lees life. Who knew that Lee was an Indian fighter as well as hero of the Mexican American war and great American strategist. His account of Lee's personnel hand to hand fight with an Apache warrior reveals his personnel determination, courage, and humor is an insightful read. This is the second of many American military experience with insurgent, unconventional, gorilla warfare, others being the Seminole war in Florida, for that fact all the Indian wars, the War in the Philippines {part of the Spanish American war} Vietnam war, and now Iraq/Afghanistan. We win as long as we have the political will to do so. Enough of that. This is a really good book, I highly recommend it. A lot of info for a little known period in American Military History.
