The Human Machine contains all that stuff which a person needs to know to have smooth relations with his peers and superiors. That is to say it deals with your self!!! The author teaches you in a persuasive manner how to get along with people in todays' world and thereby avoid many of the tensions/worries which you may have to face otherwise. The book is certainly worth buying.

Identifying and Treating Sexual Offenders - Current Approaches, Research, and Techniques - addresses the biological, developmental and cultural factors in the genesis of sexually violent behaviours and links those theories with sexual offenders. I believe this book goes a long way toward increasing our understanding of sexual aggression. The discussion about the hormonal treatment for paraphilic sexual offenders is extremely important, specially for clinicians who live in countries where this type of pharmacological management has not been adequately understood.
I recommend this exceptional book that must be read and studied by all researchers and clinicians working with sexual offenders.

I got this for my 9 year old son who has been listening to the "Left Behind" series on audio. He was delighted with this illustrated novel, and couldn't keep his nose out of it. The only down side is they don't complete the series.

Volume 11 begins with a timely assessment of self psychology and intersubjectivity theory with original contributions by Carveth, Trop, and Powell and a critical commentary by P. Ornstein. Clinical studies span the transferences (Lachmen and Kierseky; Lewisberg); the complementarity of individual and group therapy (Baker); the termination phase (Muslin); and multiple personality disorder (Palef). A special section on "dying and mourning" encompasses women professionals and suicide(Abramowitz); the self psychology of the mourning process (Hagman); and the self-object function of religious experience with the dying patient (Knoblauch). The volume concludes with theoretical and applied studies of personality testing in analysis (Geller); writer's block (Tuch); "The Guilt of Tragic Man" (Doga and Kaufmann); and the historical significance of self psychology (Killian). A testimony to the evolutionary growth of self-psychology, The Impact of NNew Ideas will be warmly welcomed by readers of the Progress in Self Psychology series.

A Fascinating set of Essays on the English Reformation

The Impact of the English Reformation 1500-1640, edited by Peter Marshall, is a brilliant essay collection by some of the top historians of this field. Peter Marshall's introductions to the three sections of book (Origins, Implementation, Outcomes) briefs the reader on the positions of the authors, sometimes in contrast with each other and other times in agreement. The main 'schools of thought' are essential those that view the Reformation as primarily Political or religious, or a mix etc. Also, Marshall, in his introduction on the prevalent theories, ties in other books on the reformation, including Christopher Haigh (English Reformations) and Duffy (The Stripping of the Altars).
What I have always found so appealing about essay collections is the ability to see how different positions are argued and how others attack them by interpreting the data in another way or by finding a new source. For History is not a subject where once a historian expounds a conclusion it becomes set in stone, but rather, that conclusion becomes open to criticism and counter arguments. Students of history are not exposed enough (or at all) to this fierce debate between historians that becomes so apparent in this volume. The Preface and Introduction, by Marshall, also give ample historical background for easier comprehension.
The Essays:
Many of the essays (Dean Colet's convocation sermon and the pre-reformation Church of England, Mary, etc) deal with a specific person or a specific time frame. While some, (The Local Impact of the Tudor Reformations, Iconoclasm in England: official and clandestine, etc) are micro studies sometimes using only a specific type of document. Others, (Youth and the English Reformation, etc) look at a single aspect over a long period of time. All these approaches make the set continuously interesting (since micro study after micro study is VERY tedious reading even for the VERY interested). Each one looks at an individual aspect of the Reformation and they rarely overlap (although each school of thought can be different).
The first essay worth pointing out is J.F. Davis', 'Lollardy and the Reformation in England.' This essay looks at the role that Lollardy played although the massive purges of Wycliffe's followers had happened earlier. Was the Reformation a continuation of their tenants? What role did the existing Lollard followers have on the Reformation?
The second most fascinating essay for me was the Susan Brigden's 'Youth and the English Reformation.' In the 16th century London was a booming city and many rural inhabitants were going there find work. Brigden looks at the social issues in London that convince many youths to become advocates of the Reformation. For example, there were guild caps on the amount of apprentices a Master was allowed to have and since there was a growing population of men seeking work many were left without jobs. Also, since there were only allowed to be a certain number of Masters they were forced to prevent many apprentices from becoming independent Master. Even more frustrating, an apprentice was not allowed marry and since they were being prevented from becoming Masters longer and longer many became disenchanted and began to following preachers and other incendiary individuals who went against the established order. The growing rifts even affected children, for example, they split off into groups (regardless of religion) called 'The Old Religion' and the 'New Religion' to have fights.
A MUST buy for the Reformation historian or student.

Eve Arnold - The godmother of China photographers

Best known as Marilyn Monroe's personal photographer, Eve Arnold and her literary legacy In China nonetheless have an important place in photography books about China, not in that she was the first foreign photojournalist EVER permitted access into Communist China, but that she was a 67 year-old woman when she made the trip!
Spending 5 months traveling across late-1970's Red China (accompanied by a government-issued sentinel), Ms. Arnold traversed the country to capture the daily lives of ordinary Chinese, from Beijing city dwellers to South China villagers to Inner Mongolian herdsmen. Many of her images of the P.R.C. come across as more "postcard perfect" than profound, and we wonder what Ms. Arnold might have uncovered had she not been shadowed by Communist Party spooks. But there is no doubt that Ms. Arnold had a connection with each of her Chinese subjects, and despite being the first westerner most of these people surely had ever encountered, was able to immortalize them in all their candid innocence.
Having made a similar journey across the Middle Kingdom myself - almost thirty years later - in preparation for my own book of photography CHINA: Portrait of a People, I can attest that China is one of the most challenging countries in the world to travel - even for a 6'4" American male. I have nothing but the utmost respect and regard for what Eve Arnold has accomplished with her beautiful book.

This is a book for people with good credit. It shows the way to bootstrap into a modest house. Other readers might be people who have a little cash but who want to keep their mortgage payments low, retirees, employees of fad industries and recipients of windfalls.
