Excellent Non B-School Corporate Finance Book by Prof. Arnold
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-17
This is an outstanding introductory text in corporate finance for a non business school audience. Prof. Arnold writes this for the experienced manager who has a general understanding of basic accounting, but does not have any background in academic finance. It is also a very good text for those entering an MBA program, and are nervous about the introductory finance course. It is written in a practical manner so that concepts like net present value, internal rate of return and "value creation" are explained with clear English, and math (while present) is kept to a minimum.

A small minority of the content is specific to the United Kingdom. Those in the United States (like myself) should still find this information useful, but specific details about bank financing in Britain, and mergers and acquisitions in "The City" are clearly U.K. specific.

This is an excellent book for those who are looking to teach themselves corporate finance. Because of its down to earth non-textbook style approach a focused read of this book will provide the reader with an equivalent conceptual understanding similar to those who have taken an introductory course in finance at a business school. You won't know all of the math, but you will understand the conceptual content just as well, and possibly better.

What a pointless review this is about to be.

You know why nobody has ever reviewed this book on Amazon? Because shoppers interested in a gigantic collection of academic papers on morphological theory are already AWARE of what it is, and don't need to be told about it. And anyone else will never, in fact, look at this review. So it's entirely a bizarre anachronism - a review that nobody will read, that has nothing useful to say.

This is, of course, a wonderful compilation of papers on morphology. It's chocked full of data (and yes, Mr. Zwicky, I'm consciously using 'chocked'), and tons of careful analysis. Most of the papers are theory-neutral, or nearly theory-neutral, and thus it is actually a nice general reference piece, since it won't become outdated. I think this was the general goal that the editors were shooting for, and they met it fabulously. When I want to know how different languages do something, for example Noun Incorporation, I can open up this book and have piles of lovely examples with intelligent commentary. Morphology being the mess that it is, there's not as much really clear organization as I'd like (lots of "Some languages do this, but others kind of do that, and then there's this thing - that we don't know WHAT...to do with") - but that's more to do with the state of morphology than the state of this book. The syntax, phonology, and semantics books in this series are all beautifully organized, and, paradoxically, much more apt to go out of date.

But you probably already know this. If you didn't, you wouldn't be looking at this book - you'd be off digging up a used copy of "M is for Mush-For-Brains" by Sue Grafton-Higgins Clark. And then you wouldn't have any clue what I'm talking about, and probably too busy being led astray by William Safire or Richard Lederer to bother trying to find out.

This is only one book in the series - it is a behemoth, though, so get a cupcake for the mailman when he delivers it to you.

This book is a must have for anyone in pest control or entomology, as they already know. Arnold Mallis was the best and helped bridge the gap between "exterminators" and entomologists.

The best work Toynbee has ever done. So thorough is this work that no one has had to or tried to do a social and economic history of the Republic. It's a shame that Oxford will not reprint this very important and scare scholarly work.

"Ancient Hawaiians lived in a world inhabited by the spirits of gods and ancestors who moved in and out of the myriad forms of the natural world. At times of crisis or creation these guardian spirits appeared in dreams or waking life to guide, protect, or right injustice. Five of these guardians--shark, plover, breadfruit tree, owl, and gourd--make vivid appearances in this jewel-like book.... In retelling these tales, Loebel-Fried draws on several versions of each, found in published sources and ethnographic notes in the Bishop Museum Archives in Honolulu. The bibliography, citing over eighty works, attests to meticulous research. The content of the stories, the striking illustrations, and the clear and simple language make this book appealing for the young as well as for adults--and a real find for storytellers."

A Marvelous Guide to The Incredible Power of the Human Voice
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-12
Four events have convinced me of the power of the human voice.

The first was the demonstration by Zoroastrian priests who could split a pane of glass in two simply by chanting. This is quite different from the tales of champagne glasses shattering as they resonate with the sound of a soprano's voice. This was precise and done to order.

The second occurred one Sunday morning, when I was sitting with a number of friends as we were waiting to enjoy our Sunday lunch together. We were having a pleasant discussion, when I heard one of the most beautiful and ethereal sounds imaginable. The sound was emanating from Jill Purce. She is the wife of the biologist Rupert Sheldrake, who was also one of the guests, and what she was doing was demonstrating Tibetan overtone chanting. The power of the sound was quite tangible.

The third was trying a series of mantras and chanting exercises and finding just how quickly each could change my state of consciousness and even produce profound physical effects.

The fourth was being made aware of the effects produced by some of the subharmonics of my own voice when speaking to large audiences. I'd never been even vaguely aware of them until a sound engineer did a demonstration for me.

I was therefore extremely excited to see this new book by James D'Angelo, and it exceeded all my expectations.

Although not a long book, it is crammed with practical exercises and it, together with the accompanying CD, should be enough to convince the most hardened skeptic. And for the open-minded experimenter, there is a wealth of wonderful material. You will not need to spend all that long experimenting with these exercises to discover their extraordinary health-giving benefits.

Highly recommended.

This book helps a patient take charge of his own treatment.

This book is a great source of valuable and very up-to-date information on prostate problems. More importantly, perhaps, this book is written by someone who clearly understands both medicine and patients - as demonstrated by these excerpts: "Always bear in mind ... that you're in charge. The doctor is only your advisor." (p51) "The doctor is not God and does not have all the answers. However, the best doctor will have a lot of information, experience, and wisdom from which you can draw when making your choices." (p220) "Don't let your doctor decide for you, or talk you into or out of anything. It's your health and your body, so it's your choice." (p145) "The best patient communicates well, and demands the best from his doctors." (p166) "It's the patients who give their doctors the most trouble, the ones who challenge treatment choices, who ask the most questions, and who refuse to play helpless that do the best." (p174) I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Prostate.

This is a unique book, it focuses on heart failure and is very accurately described by it's title. I found it to be surprisingly easy to read. The strength of this book is that it does a good job integrating background info on normal cardiac physiology and molecular biology with the alterations that occur during heart failure. The author often employs a philosphical approach with many quotes from philosophy and theater that are meant to give the reader "something to chew on" before embarking on the chapter at hand. Some may find this approach distracting, however I personally found it refreshing. The book does a good job covering the important basic aspects of heart failure; classifications, cardiac physiology, E-C coupling, signal transduction, etc. Best of all the book is actually in a user friendly size, about 6" x 10", about 1 pound, and 380 pages, so it may be carried around with relative ease. Bottom line is that this will serve as a good guide to understand the basic principles of heart failure and provides an avenue integrate molecular biology with cardiac pathophysiology. It doesn't have all the details, but will prepare you to seek out the info that you need in an intelligent fashion from medical databases.
