Certainly the most serious, scholarly, and musicological study of Schoenberg's early, atonal work. For those interested in less of an introduction and more in depth analysis, this book is the key for its subject area. Lucidly written, the ideal first step beyond so many biographical-introductions to this great composer.

For students of post-World War II military history

Thomas Arnold was a Lieutenant Colonel in the General Staff Corps, Assistant Chief of Staff of the 92nd Infantry Division at the end of World War II. He had been planning and directing the 92nd's operations during the most of the nine months it had been in combat. In 1947 he was stationed at Vienna, Austria in order to plan the reorganization of the United States Forces Austria, with a view towards the looming post-war Soviet threat to Europe. In Austria And Unites States Forces Austria, Arnold offers a brief history of Austria from its origins down to the present time, and documents its relevance to problems faced by the U.S., England, and France in seeking to establish a free, independent, and neutral country during the years of the Cold War. Austria And Unites States Forces Austria is strongly recommended reading for students of post-World War II military history, the 1950s and 1960s era of Cold War politics, and the history of what became the federal republic of Austria, a industrial and trade-based nation solidly in alliance with the Western democracies.

Such a hilarious book! Robin Pulver and Tedd Arnold are perfectly matched as author and illustrator in this new book about a bus driver with "Two hands on the wheel and nerves of steel"!

Axle Annie is the friendliest bus driver you would ever hope to meet. She never yells at the kids, she loves them, and the kids all love her. As a matter of fact, riding Annie's bus is the best part of the day, just ask any child in Burskyville. There is only one cloud on the horizon - Rush Hotfoot.

Rush is always in a bad mood. He hates to hear the kids sing. He hates their laughter. And he REALLY hates to wait behind Annie's bus for the children to get in and out of the bus.

One day, Rush races past Annie's stop sign. He broke the law! Annie reports him...now he is really, really, really steaming mad. Then he races across the narrow bridge...with near-tragic results. Will Annie and her kids save the day?

This is a very cute book that any child, teacher, parent, or (especially!) school-bus driver will enjoy, very much. I shared it with 4 kids under the age of 10, and all of us laughed all the way through it. Don't miss this book!

KINDNESS IS THE KEY

My Mother read me this story around the age of 5 and after just one reading I was hooked. I requested she read it to me nightly for a long time! My Mother did the voices of the characters so great! As I got older, I read it on my own and I wore out the story, reading it countless times. As an adult, I still love the story because it is magical, suspenseful and just a little bit scary but not too much for a child.

This is a wonderful story with many morals. It TEACHES a child RESPECT for elders (definitely always an issue in the world today) and when unsure what to do, to go GET ADVICE FROM SOMEONE YOU TRUST before acting and to LISTEN to that wise advice VERY CAREFULLY. This book teaches a child to be COURAGEOUS and use wise advice along with her WITS, INSTINCTS and HEART to get out of perilous situations.

The Russian illustrations are very different than a typical American book; which I find very refreshing. It has vibrant primary colors and lots of black outlines to set the pictures off. Also the layout of pictures within the story is sheer genius.

The girl was badly mistreated by her stepmother but yet was kind and gentle, not letting it effect her personality. This is the moral from the book I appreciate the most. REMINDS ME OF A WISE SAYING:"YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE SITUATION BUT YOU CAN CONTROL HOW YOU REACT TO IT." Children should be taught this truth from birth!

This is a great book! I highly recommend it. You may have to settle for one of the books in print right now but this one is the classic one to me--if you can get it, I think you will be very pleased.

A book you can sink your whole body into reading and savour for the words.

I bought this book because the author is recommended reading by Tee A. Corinne in her book `Dreams of the Woman Who Loved Sex'.

From the back of the book - "..simply the best novel ever written about Houston...This is a book many readers will fall in love with ..." Phillip Lopate, author of `The Rug Merchant'

" ... a rare combination of social comedy and intimate personal drama." Laura Furman, author of `Tuxedo Park'

The Bestest True Whale Story

I like whales really much. I have been studying whales for about 3 years. I am most knowledgible about the the giant creatures of the sea: like the blue whale, the bowhead whale, the right whale, the grey whale, humpback, fin whale, minke whale (all baleen whales), and the rest are toothed whales.

I liked "Baby Whale Rescue" because they saved a whale that was stranded without its mother for a week. I knew JJ from TV News, Seaworld, and from watch his release to the sea.

More about the music than the man

I am not a musician or a musicologist, and so much of this short biography went by me. It does give a general outline of Bach's career and story. It claims that Bach did have an ambition to move up in the musical world, and that this dictated his decisions at a number of key points in his life. It tells the story of his two marriages , and the twenty children( Ten who lived to adulthood) but in a very skimpy way. We do not get from this biography any real sense of Bach's thought or inner life even about his music. We do learn about the period of ' cantata writing' and what he did with the ' piano concerto' and something about the character of polyphony in his music. We do not get a picture of the whole Bachian dynasty in music and the story of how it produced a number of first- class composers, and one overwhelming genius.
I think too the biography does not do enough to define that genius, and tell us of its place in the history of music.
