I read this biography shortly after I'd completed "Titan" about John D. Rockefeller. It was interesting to see how two men on different sides of the antitrust issue grew up and what influenced them. This book is well-written and very accessible. I highly recommend it as a good introduction to law students and anybody else who is interested in antitrust law.

Thurman Arnold (1891-1969) is a rather interesting figure we don't hear much about today; those of us in Washington, however, are constantly reminded of him due to the "Thurman Arnold Building" which houses the law firm of Arnold & Porter. Until now, those interested in Arnold were limited to his autobiography ("Fair Fights and Foul") and a collection of his letters ("Voltaire and the Cowboy"). That limitation has now been corrected with the publication of this informative biography.
The book covers all stages of Arnold's life, accomplishments, and personal involvements. That is, it traces his early years in Wyoming, his education at Princeton and Harvard Law, initial practice in Chicago, his return to Wyoming and his transition thereafter to Dean of the University of West Virginia College of Law. The book hits is stride when it follows Arnold to Yale Law School and his period interacting with the legal realists. It also does a solid job of discussing Arnold's two master works: "The Symbols of Government" and "The Folklore of Capitalism"--both important books not often mentioned today.
Arnold's service in the New Deal also is discussed, particularly his 5-year tenure as Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust. The author, who apparently teaches antitrust, has presented a very professional analysis of Arnold's career and contributions to the development of antitrust law in that position as a "trustbuster." Eventually, Arnold moves on to a short stint at the D.C. Circuit. The highpoint of book is when Arnold joins Paul Porter and Abe Fortas to build Arnold, Fortas and Porter. The early government security program cases are discussed, as is the evolution and growth of the firm. Surprisingly, there is not that much about Abe Fortas in the book, since Arnold is the author's central concern. The poignant, but unsuccessful, effort of Arnold to facilitate the re-entry of Fortas into the firm after his Supreme Court resignation is well handled, as are Arnold's final years.
The author has done extensive research; his 34 pages of notes are highly valuable for those interested in more research on Arnold. Also included are three appendices dealing with Arnold's D.C. Circuit decisions; his principal writings; and a selected bibliography. At about 200 pages (not counting notes), the book is a lean but yet comprehensive biography of Arnold that can be read relatively quickly and always with pleasure.

To understand many of the themes, subject matter, and characters in this book, the first book of this series, Return to Love is required reading. However, this book is excellent. Stansfield writes and develops her characters in a way that make anyone feel they could easily look up Colin and Janna Trevor in the phonebook.
Although this book contains several intense and painful issues, it is an excellent book well worth multiple readings. I have read it three times, and I find something new to love it for each and every time.

I just loved this book. An imagination is something we all have young and old. I love how this imagination comes to life. I especially love the frog added to each page that little secret children get excited about finding as the story is told. Great work to the author I'm hoping that a continuation will follow "To Touch A Cloud". Who knows maybe one on "Catching Rain Drops".

This book explains the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM), which is a management strategy that seeks to embed awareness of quality in all organizational processes. TQM requires that an organisation maintain quality standard in all aspects of its business. This entails ensuring that things are done right the first time and that defects and waste are eliminated from operations.
ISO defines TQM is a management approach of an organization, centered on quality, based on the participation of all its members and aiming at long-term success through customer satisfaction, and benefits to all members of the organization and to society.
The book explains how 51 companies in a wide range of industries successfully employed TQM to achieve outstanding success.
This is a great book for any manager from any company, large or small, in a manufacturing or service organisation.

he Baldrigde Quality System quantifies the quality of a company with a score from zero to a thousand points. Even the best companies are far behind the thousand point limit, but the writers found 53 examples that, at least for one aspect, owe almost the maximum of the available points. Ben&Jerry's, Ford, 3M and AT&T are just a few of the companies that have provided information for the book. Still the book is not a list of 'perfect case examples' but the writers managed to let the theory and practice explain solutions to daily problems and improved management techniques. Although none of the issues dealt with is explained in the smallest detail or with an extensive number of examples, but this books provides a broad view for new managers or managers new to TQM.

I agree with the previous poster. This book is really fun, silly and the illustrations are very cute. My kids love it and my husband and I don't mind reading it either (if you're like us, you are sick and tired of Thomas the Tank engine books!!!!). If your child is train obsessed, like my two boys are, this is an added plus! I also think that little girls would enjoy this book as well.

This is an infectiously silly story, and my 5-year-old son howls when we read it together. We first picked it up on impulse because it had a train on the cover (my son loves trains) but it soon became a favorite bedtime story for its own engaging goofiness. The illustrations are part of the charm as well. You won't be sorry you tried this one!

I highly reccommend this as a reference book. It has a reading style explaining several traditions, myths, or terms per page. Terms like "Batten the Hatch", "No Quarter", and "Shangheid" are explained in their origin and modern use. It also has a section in the back where modern scholars have conducted research to determine any mistakes made and clear them up. Wonderful old llustrations with each definition. I could not put it down and read it straight through. I gave this as a gift to a friend that is a Navy Chief, and he loves it.

Everybody knows somebody who owns a restaurant or WANTS to own a restaurant. This is the book for them! it is also a book for woodworkers and artisans who value perfection in their work (the owner of the 20 Elephant restaurant hates a table that wobbles and you need to put a matchbook under the leg even BEFORE the elephants dance on it). In a perfect world, every town would have a 20 Elephant Restaurant where talents and craftsmanship are valued more highly than "you want fries with that?" and paper hats.

I first read this book fifteen or so years ago when I was a university student. I was studying literature at the time and had just read Riddley Walker. I had the privilege to hear Hoban speak at the time and read from Pilgerman which was then a work in progress. As for this book, I noticed Hoban had also written children's stories so I started collecting them. I will just say Twenty Elephant Restaurant is one of the most simple, wonderful and beautiful things ever written. I now read it and other of RH's stories to my children who love them. Thank you and god bless you Mr Hoban.

This book won the 1985 Spring Book Award for Literature from the Scottish Arts Council, and one can see why. A wide-ranging, enthusiastic and scholarly work, it covers a great deal of ground with a surprising amount of detail for its size. Although some of the archaeological conclusions have changed in the intervening thirty years, this is still a good introduction to the period and good value for money. Topics include: Roman Britain, the Picts, St. Columba, Adomnan, Vikings, the orgins of medieval Scotland, and the conquest of the southern uplands.
The author shows an impressive ability to look at the larger picture while not losing sight of details, an ability which allows him to combine seeming isolated facts into interesting combinations. Whether or not you agree with all of his conclusions, you will find many that are thought-provoking. An example is his dating of the final collapse of the British kingdom of Rheged by the series of entries in the Irish Annals of Ulster regarding the presence of roving bands of British warriors in Ireland between 682 and 709. Highly recommended.

My B.A. degree dealt with the growth and development of Scottish Gaelic society and culture, and I used no book more than this one. It is challenging and accessible, and provides many reference materials such as chronological and geaneological tables. The bibilography is also outstanding. The book has been described as a 'galloping, rip-roaring' work and I wholly agree. Its greatest strength is its presentation of detailed arguements in a way which both makes a coherent point and invites further study. More than a survey, but not a specialist-only text by any means. Its counterpart for Irish history would be "The Course of Irish History" edited by T.W. Moody and F.X. Martin (Dublin: Mercier) 1994. Both are invaluable.
