An excellent introduction into "Population Ageing"Review Date: 2006-02-12
1. falling fertility,
2. falling infant and adult mortality,
3. falling crude marriage rates (CMR),
4. falling total first marriage rates (TFMR) for men as well as women,
5. falling remarriage rates, and
6. increasing migration; our future generations have to cope with longer lifespan and better longevity for all future generations to come; thereby viewing global ageing of population in all countries across the world. If you are an undergraduate student in Sociology/Anthropology (or any other related stream from the Social Sciences, in general) and looking for an excellent introduction into all the topics related to demographic ageing, with lots of tables, charts and diagrams; then this is it! Also, advanced topics like: intergenerational contracts, retirement policies, Social Security models and Ageism as a crime are introduced and extrapolated.
This is an excellent introduction into the subject of "Population Ageing". 5 stars overall!!!

Perfect summer readingReview Date: 2001-07-18
"Home, Hearth and Haley" by Muriel Jensen. Lawyer Bart Megrath left Florida to travel to colonial looking Maple Hill, Massachusetts to bail his friend's sister out of jail. However, he wonders who will bail out his heart as he falls in love with his volatile client, Haley Whitcomb.
"Temperature Rising" by Bobby Hutchinson. In Vancouver, most of the professional staff at St. Joseph's Hospital respect Dr. James Burke for his incredible trauma surgical talent, but try to avoid him anywhere outside the operating room, as tact is not his code word. However, chief operating official Melissa Clayton knows first hand about James' abrupt manner, but still cannot protect her heart from desiring the curmudgeon surgeon.
All three tales are powerful stories due to deep believable characters and engaging relationships that lead to enticing tales. Readers will relish this anthology that is a return to the "daddy school" and the ER wars of St. Joseph's as well as the opening gamut of a new miniseries.

"Daddy's Girl" by Judith Arnold: A child custody case brings Kevin Mdeina, one-year-old Alex and social worker Natalie Baines into a collision course. He fears every nuance, every subtlety, every implication of his words out of concern of what he might reveal to this woman who holds the power to influence the removal custody of his child, and because he's attracted to her. She holds her distance because he represents a conflict of interest when she must only concern herself with the child's best interest.
"Home, Hearth and Haley" by Muriel Jensen: When his best friend's sister lands in jail, lawyer Bart Megrath finds himself bailing Hellfire Haley Whitcomb out of jail. He's up to the task, however, despite the fact her last lawyer was carried out on a stretcher.
"Temperature Rising" by Bobby Hutchinson: Dr. James Burke understands the power of healing, but doesn't understand the power of the heart until he encounters hospital administrator Melissa Clayton. Melissa is just the woman to give James a lesson in bedside manners.
Characterized by strong characterizations emotional intensity, ALL SUMMER LONG presents three strong tales of romance. Jensen's novella launches the beginning of her Men of Maple Hill series, and Hutchinson's novella introduces her Temperature Rising series. This collection comes very highly recommended.

If you have a heart, read this book!Review Date: 2005-02-17
The author uses dialogue to effectively convey some of the questions that patients ask after suffering heart attacks or being diagnosed with serious heart problems. Many of them want to know the risk factors involved in making love. Do they dare engage in passionate lovemaking and, if so, WHEN? Dr. Chapunoff is honest and forthright with his answers and provides general guidelines, while strongly emphasizing that only a patient's personal physician can provide the appropriate options and timing for sexual activity.
This book is informative, well-researched and appropriate for professionals; however, it is not too technical for the average reader who may be desperately seeking answers. Other than a book entitled Sex and the Cardiac Patient published by the same author in 1991, there are no other books addressing the issues he covers. Dr. Chapunoff, with the writing of these two books, has opened a door to a long-neglected subject. He relates that many patients hesitate in discussing sex with their personal physicians because they feel that they don't know the physicians well enough or, perhaps, know them too well. Many times both the patient and physician are uncomfortable with the subject matter. The author strongly recommends that future physicians receive more exposure and training in sexology, psychology, and communications skills in medical school and during postgraduate training.
As I read this book, I recalled the time when my ninety-one year old father confided in me that he had tried to talk with his family doctor about sex after suffering a severe heart attack. He said that the doctor was uncomfortable and at a loss for words. I could understand because I felt my face turning red-after all this was my dad and I just couldn't imagine him being sexual. Especially at his age! Though I wanted to run, I listened and later thought about the doctor who had brushed my father aside when he was seeking help. How I wish I'd had a copy of this book to give Dad and his physician.
Dr. Chapunoff addresses a variety of subjects that will be of great interest and value to the cardiac patient. The first chapter is entitled Anatomy of a Heart Attack and the last chapter is fittingly named Planning for a Better Future. In between there are chapters that discuss instructions to patients, the benefits of a heart attack, masturbation, communication, extramarital affairs, sex following a cardiac crisis, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, Viagra, etc. It is this reviewer's belief that, if you are a cardiac patient and have questions in regard to sexual and health issues, you will probably find these questions addressed in this book. This excellent resource proves that an informative and educational reading experience can also be engaging even when the subject matter is very serious.
Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevantReview Date: 2007-11-12
As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in the introduction to the book, one of the most common problems in discussing sex with your health provider is embarrassment. And another problem is that only up to recently has there been a concerted effort to address in detail the subject matter. Even Dr. Chapunoff admits that before he wrote his book, he knew very little about advising patients as to the precautions they should take before, during, and after sexual intercourse. As a result, when he first set out to research the topic, he was astounded when he discovered that there was very little information pertaining to sex and the cardiac patient in classical medical and cardiology textbooks or in medical journals. Only during the last ten years has the subject been taken seriously with clinical research and clinical observations of heart disease patients and their sexual performance.
In an upbeat, direct, straight forward conversational style, Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease & Sex provides basic facts about a multitude of concerns that directly or indirectly relate to cardiac patients and their sexual partners. Examples of some of the questions explored are when should a person be able to resume sexual activity after a massive heart attack? Are there any special sexual positions one should adopt after a heart attack? What is the danger to engage in passionate lovemaking if you have hypertension, heart failure, valvular heart disease, aortic aneurysm and/or cardiac rhythm disturbances?
Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevant to not only cardiac patients but also to others who may be thinking about the topic but were too shy or embarrassed to discuss it with their physicians.
Divided into four parts, the book begins with the basic facts to sex and the heart. It is here where we learn about the reality of experiencing a heart attack and its ramifications insofar as concerns its benefits and yes, believe it or not, there are some interesting benefits. From here Dr. Chapunoff explains cardiovascular disease, sex, aging, sexual dysfunction, female perspective, risks of sex, communicating with your doctor and sexual partner, and what to do after a heart attack. Dr. Chapunoff also explains and explores erectile dysfunction, exercise, and nutrition. Quite interesting, Dr. Chapunoff states that the majority of doctors and patients avoid discussing the right time to resume sexual activity following a heart attack, an acute cardiac crisis or cardiac surgery. Unfortunately, this has led to many a patient deciding on their own when to once again become sexually active with some disastrous results. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the timing for resumption of sexual activity is not determined by a book or general principles as every case is unique and should be treated individually by your health-care practitioner.
Dr. Chapunoff also explores myths and facts surrounding sex and the heart with some humor thrown in as an example, a physician to his patient: "You are telling me that you had sex without waiting for my recommendations, and as soon following your coronary? Walter, didn't you think it was risky?" And the patient's reply: "No, I thought it was worthy!"
As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in his introduction, it is difficult to tell which of the topics dealt with in the book are more important. Questions that you never focused on and perhaps considered trivial, may be extremely important for your cardiac health and sexuality. Consequently, the book will prove to be invaluable to widen your horizons concerning the subject matter, however, as mentioned, this educational guide should not be a substitute for any of your physician's recommendations. Medical treatments are not provided by books but rather by doctors.

Leading with Innovation and ExampleReview Date: 2001-10-18
While many will not recognize his name, all have had their lives improved by his many innovative contributions to science, medicine, and education. Chemistry as we know it mostly advanced through the development of instruments that can rapidly, inexpensively, and accurately analyze biological and mineral substances. Our modern manufacturing processes rely on these instruments as do our physicians in isolating and diagnosing diseases. Many of these tests were first accomplished by either Dr. Beckman or the company he founded, Beckman Instruments. His company also played a key role in pioneering critical components and instruments for secret projects such as those for radar and the atomic bomb during World War II.
In parallel, Dr. Beckman played a big role in the development of Cal Tech, as a student, professor, major donor, and trustee. The rise of that institution from being a small school to one of the world's very top universities benefited, in part, from Dr. Beckman's efforts on Cal Tech's behalf over many decades.
Dr. Beckman's company continues to thrive today as Beckman Coulter, and is leading the way to finding new ways to diagnose diseases.
If you are like me, you will enjoy reading about how many important chemical and electronic innovations occurred. Dr. Beckman was often involved. For example, Beckman Instruments was at one time briefly a leader in work developing the first semiconductor technology, before there was a Silicon Valley. It was fascinating to see how the team split off to become Fairchild and later Intel.
Dr. Beckman was very generous with his charity, and has donated hundreds of millions of dollars.
The biography is unusually detailed on both the personal and the scientific side. The book also benefits from having many excellent photographs. I particularly liked the many side bars that made it possible to read in more depth about particular aspects of Dr. Beckman's life. .
Anyone who wants to understand about the challenges of being an inventor-businessperson will enjoy this book. Those who are interested in understanding more about how modern instruments developed will find the book like a history of science. Anyone who wants to learn about being a good example will find Dr. Beckman to be a worthy source of study, as well.
After you finish this book, consider where you have stopped following your curiosity. Then take some more steps in those directions. Like Dr. Beckman, your greatest accomplishments may be ahead of you as you follow your curiosity into the uncharted territory of the next big thing.
Look on life with interest and pursue it with high standards!
