Great bookReview Date: 2007-05-16
God's Anointed Servant Indeed!Review Date: 2005-06-13
This Volume: First of all, the editing and reworking of the original for this edition was done by the author--Arnold Dallimore. This is important due to the terrible chop-jobs professional editors are prone to perform on works such as this one. But since I've yet to read the longer edition of which this volume is a condensation, I cannot draw any helpful comparisons between the two. I can, however, say unreservedly that this is an amazing biography in itself. Most modern readers aren't interested in wading through 1200 pages of historical details, even for a man as great as Whitefield. Far more would be willing to pick up a well-written 200 page paperback concerning a name they might have heard mentioned, but know little about. All in all, I very highly recommend this volume for this sort of reader. But if you are an evangelical Christian (particularly of the "Calvinist" doctrinal persuasion) or a Church-history buff, then I feel compelled to recommend springing for the full edition. With what this tiny volume contained I cannot but expect great things from the lengthier original work.
The Subject Matter: Wow. Simply wow. I mean--who knew? I'd always heard that John Wesley was the sole founder of Methodism. In fact, the only thing I knew about George Whitefield was that he was attributed with a few neat quotes (ie. "Let the name of Whitefield perish, but Christ be glorified!", "I am weary in Thy work, but not weary of it", etc.) and that he once spoke at Jonathan Edwards' Northhampton church (at which time he left Edwards in tears). I fully expect that if it were not for this work of Dallimore, the name of Whitefield truly would be lost to persons such as myself. What I expected was another (Calvinistic) Wesley. What I found was a man whose zeal, love, holiness of life and passion for Christ seemed to equal even those I hold in highest regard (among whom are Martin Luther and Charles Spurgeon). Whitefield was a tireless worker for God and his zeal for the gospel was only matched by his selfless compassion for his fellow man. He was the first of the great open-air preachers and nudged both John and Charles Wesley into evangelistic ministry. Whitefield's life is a beautiful illustration of Christian ministry and evangelistic zeal. I cannot recommend this man highly enough.
The Author: Dallimore was a Baptist pastor and semi-prolific biographer. The only lack that I see in this work compared with his biography "Spurgeon" is that it is more lacking in anecdotal stories and pastoral application. This is likely due to the scope of the abbreviated work rather than to a change in style of the author. It is a fast-moving biography and takes you quickly from Whitefield's earliest days into the midst of his phenomenal ministry. Dallimore has done a superb job in this work.
The Reader: Who should read this book? I would recommend it most highly to pastors and other evangelical Christians whose zeal for God and spiritual wells have begun to run dry. Evangelical Calvinistic Christians will get the greatest benefit from this read. But it may also prove of great interest to those of the Methodist heritage. Also, all who are called to the ministry of evangelism (teaching and preaching) could not but benefit from this work. Whitefield's zeal is contagious and his meekness humbling. The mere historian might enjoy the factual aspects of the book, but it was written from a distinctively evangelical Christian perspective.
"Weary in Thy work, but not weary of it." -G. Whitefield
Swift Survey of George Whitefield's LifeReview Date: 2006-10-23
So I decided to read through this condensation of the two volume set. This little book has a lot of power because it is a tight presentation of the most telling moments in the great evangelist's life. You see his early days at the Bell Inn which was run by his parents. You read briefly of his involvement with the Oxford Holy Club, and his shattering conversion to Christ.
After his ordination, he is introduced to field preaching by Howell Harris, and the rest, as we say, is history. He preaches to thousands of miners and workers in the open air in England, then in October of 1739, he sails for the second time to the American colonies, where his powerful preaching wins thousands of people to Christ.
You also read of Whitefield's unfortunate doctrinal divisions with John and Charles Wesley involving Calvinism and Arminianism. You will meet Whitefield's wife, and how they spent more time apart than together on account of his itinerant ministry.
You also read of his friendship with Benjamin Franklin and of his meeting with Jonathan Edwards.
You also read of Whitefield's constant health problems and how his persistent preaching eventually wore him out, and he died early one morning in 1770 of a severe case of asthma.
He is quite simply the greatest evangelist since the apostle Paul, and Dallimore's little book catches the highlights of his ministry. Highly recommended.

Excellent resource, accomplishes a lot in a short spaceReview Date: 2006-10-21
After looking at many books and bringing along someone who is fluent in German, I settled on this as one of my primary resources. This book is well-organized, comprehensive and to the point. It also has very good exercises, stories and tips for learning the language. You can buy this book with confidence.
The pace of this book is quick and if you haven't studied German before, you may want to get supplementary resources. However, this text provides an excellent roadmap and you can use other books, tapes and software to support its basic approach.

An Amazing Panographic Journal of Australia!!!Review Date: 1999-07-31
Truly Beautiful!Review Date: 2001-11-27
From that point on I have had a Ken Duncan panograph on my wall and this book on my coffee table. Ken has the gift to create pictures that invoke amazing feelings in the audience. His picture of a field of Sunflowers is aptly named "Field of Joy". I sat in his gallery and watch a dozen people walk in a smile when they saw the Field of Joy picture on the wall. It was the most natural reaction.
Ken's work is beautifully portrayed in this book in large, page and multi-page covering panographs. It will be a favorite with you, your family, and your friends. I know, as I have one friend who has flipped through its pages at least 20 times, and keeps coming back for more.
Are you a bit leery about buying a book of photos without seeing some of the photographers work? No problem. Check out Ken's web page at kenduncan.com.
If you are interested in, have been to, or are thinking of going to Australia, this is the book for you. It is broken up into the five Australian states of New South Wales, Southern, Northern Territory, Western, Queensland, and a section for Tasmania. It is the Highlights of Australia Book.
If you are interested in panoramic photography or photography in general, this is the book for you. It is a portfolio of one who has mastered the panoramic format. All of the photos are in stunningly rich color and have good page coverage so you aren't squinting and you don't need a magnifier.
This is a fantastic coffee table book, and well worth it's price.

warm and entertaining Manhattan frolicReview Date: 2003-08-05
On the Long Island Railroad, Loretta observes passenger Josh Kaplan shut down the cell phone of an obnoxious individual. She introduces herself to him asking if he would be interested in coming on her show as the cell phone hero. Instead her boss, TV personality Becky Blake, selects Loretta to go on the air on a blind date. She pleads with Marty, whose girlfriend lives in Florida, to help her. As they go out on the worst date of their lives, Marty and Loretta fall in love.
This is an amusing contemporary romance that will keep the audience laughing with the antics of the lead couple, that of the extended dental group and finally the other TV show players. Readers will applaud Josh for his cell phone heroics sort of mindful of Annie Hall when Woody gets McLuhan to shut up the pseudo intellectual students. HEART ON THE LINE is simply a warm and entertaining Manhattan frolic.

A rollicking good time!Review Date: 2003-07-31
Nonetheless, the two find themselves growing more and more attracted to each other. The girlfriend hundreds of miles away is becoming harder to stay faithful to, as are all Loretta's determinations to maintain her independence.
***** This book is a rollicking good time, perfect for the blahs of summer. You can picture Meg Ryan or Reese Witherspoon as Loretta with no problem, and all I can say is Matt is a dream, handsome and so caring that he is dedicated to taking care of his mother's lawn personally on a weekly basis. If the book only told us where to find one of him, it would be perfect. *****
It All Started on the TrainReview Date: 2004-04-24
Attorney Josh Kaplan lives an ordinary, routine kind of life. He takes cases for people that really need his help, plays chess and volunteers at a senior center. He sounds kind of boring, doesn't he. He's not. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention he has a girlfriend. I also forgot to mention that she lives in Florida, not exactly an easy commute from New York.
Josh's life is about to take a new turn, as he meets Loretta on the train coming back into the City. She had been visiting her rather large family, the one that wants her married. And he had been coming back from visiting his mother. Loretta asks Josh to guest on her talk show, asking him to pose as a blind date. They quickly become fast friends, but Josh makes it clear he's not interested in romance, he has that girlfriend in Florida, after all. Besides, Loretta is an independent gal and wants to stay that way.
So what do you think is going to happen to our couple who happened to meet on that train? I know, but I'm not telling. I will say this though, the book is a hoot, the story is super, the characters are wonderful and I couldn't put this one down.

HITLER'S "PHILOSOPHY"Review Date: 2001-04-07
Analysis of the development of Hitler's Ideas.Review Date: 2002-10-21
Outstanding bookReview Date: 2006-01-08
Those are the last two lines of this wonderfully written book and is precisely the approach Jackel took when he wrote it. We all know that Hitler was a terrible human being. What we don't need are authors writing books with that approach.
What Jackel has done is what more authors of history should aspire to. He has written a brilliant and well-researched book that speaks in facts and occurences without emotion. It better allows the reader to absorb and analyze the material and gives a seemingly non-biased view of one of history's most interesting figures.

A good little math DICTIONARYReview Date: 2007-03-04
In actuality, it is a math dictionary. It is written simply and concisely and is pretty easy to understand. The book even includes some practice exercises. It's a wonderful book to review forgotten math terms and simple concepts. However, it was missing two definitions that I needed help with: array (what on earth is it and what is it for?) and canceling (in fraction multiplication or division). A little coverage on Roman numerals would have been very nice, too.
It definitely wasn't what I expected from the title. Most of all, I really wanted some help on showing my child how to multiply numbers with multiple digits..I thought that this book would take a linear math explanation approach with handy hints and tips to make basic math basics easier. I was quite disappointed in that regard.

The very apex of linguistic theoryReview Date: 2001-11-30
The most comprehensive introduction currently available!Review Date: 2000-11-19
As a mature undergraduate studying Linguistics, with no A Level English Language under my belt, I had no prior knowledge of the areas this book covers, and as such was disadvantaged in comparison to the other students who had done the A Level. However I soon found, with the aid of this worthy publication, that the playing field had been levelled.
This is not to say that this was the only book at this level that I read. In fact, I have at least four others in my collection. Why this one stands out is because of its clear and informative style, understandable examples, and sensible, logical layout.
Initially there is an overview, laying out the underpinning theory that the modern sciences of Phonetics and Phonology are built on. The distinction between physical language and the underlying mental representation of its physical form, as adopted by Generative Linguistics, is introduced, and Phonology and Phonetics are placed into the 'big-picture' of a total language model that includes Syntax, Morphology and Semantics.
Next comes an introduction to articulatory phonetics: the actual physical mechanisms used in the production of speech, including airstream, vocal cords and places of articulation. This then opens up the complete exposition of consonants and vowels, and details all the possible types of sounds that humans produce. Clear tables and diagrams are used throughout, making understanding and revision an easy task.
After this comes a chapter on Acoustic Phonetics, the captivating study of the properties of speech sounds. Not only does it consider the physical nature of these, but also focuses on the linguistically relevant acoustic features that play a part in production and reception. Here the authors have taken some complex physics and made it fathomable, no mean feat!
From here on, the book investigates the phonological rules and features used when we produce speech. Davenport and Hannahs introduce the Linear Model of phonology, as pioneered by Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle in The Sound Pattern of English, (1968. New York; Harper & Row), and developed by many, which to the uninitiated would make you run away faster than a gazelle! The chapters develop in a logical manner, each building upon the previous, and the reader comes out with a sense of mastery over the data.
Throughout this discussion, however, the book does not take this Linear Model as gospel, and the authors frequently highlight problems that the model cannot account for. They introduce several alternative models, like Autosegmental Phonology and Feature Geometry, and the discussion of the relative merits is open and unbiased.
Finally, the book concludes with a well-written chapter that stresses the need to constrain the phonological model so that over-productive rules are dismissed with. Concepts like extrinsic vs. intrinsic rule ordering, abstractness and the power of the phonological component are discussed, leaving the reader in a frame of mind to delve into further reading.
Overall this is an excellent book, well written and interesting all the way. As a student of Linguistics this is a must, with exercises at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge, not just at degree level, at High School Level too it will prove an invaluable resource. Also, for the non-academic with an interest in how we produce speech, Introducing Phonetics & Phonology is an excellent and enjoyable read.
