A little dated, but still great.

This book covers not just the concepts of reliability modeling but also how to do it in the practical real-world.

As with any book that shows the real-world approach, this one has sadly become dated, but the principles are the same. For instance, they recommend SMERFS ...what you really want is SMERFS^3, which does more only better. However, the models and math are equally applicable today as they were when the book was first written.

While you can read any of the raving reviews for the contents, I'd like to provide some special kudos for the Appendix. This is bar far one of the best introductions to practical statistics. It skips a lot of the how-we-got-the-formula and instead demonstrates what the formulas are doing and why using pictures and text.

There're list of formulas and conversions, a well-written glossary of terms, and my personal favorite: the glossary of notation.

See, a big part of the problem in reading texts that deal with mathematics is that you see some strange symbol in the page and your brain has no idea what it is. You have no name for that symbol, you don't know whether it's an operation, a function, or a value. This explains all that, making it easier to digest other books of similar kind.

The book is presented much like a college text book, so there are excercises (with explainatory answers in the back) so you can validate you're on the right track as you go.

Seminal book that is still up-to-date

This book is classified as a seminal work in that it was the first mainstream book to address software reliability. The author is considered to be one of the founders of the discipline. Although the body of knowledge has grown significantly since this book was first published it remains a valid text because unlike technology, the underlying math and modeling are nearly timeless. The book serves as an introduction to software reliability as a discipline, and gives a solid foundation of the basics. Be aware that this is a math-intensive text and requires both statistics and probability skills. You also need a background in software development to fully benefit from this book (although the author provides appendices to fill in knowledge and experience gaps if your background isn't strong or recent).

Software and hardware reliability concepts, common reliability models and how the concepts and models apply to systems engineering and project management are provided to set context. The next part of the book goes into the practical application of reliability models and techniques. This part of the book is complete and covers all of the key elements of software reliability from design, development and implementation perspectives.

This book is more suited to college-level courses on software reliability. The author's later work, "Software Reliability Engineered Testing", is better suited for real world application because it approaches reliability from process and methodology perspectives and is more focused on practice than theory. However, this is still useful as a primer for practicing professionals.

A story that all who have experienced loss can identify with

This book focuses on the grief associated with loss. While it is written for children, the principles apply to young and old alike. The book is a beautifully written and illustrated story that provides a way for us all to celebrate the special people in our lives even after they are gone

An excellent addition to a child's understanding of grief.

As a parent, where do you turn to explain the fears of grief to a child? Here is a book to answer that dilemma. Told with simplicity and warmth, it addresses a child's largest fear, that of forgetting the one who has died. With gentleness and understanding of the child's world in both text and pictures, the reader is offered ways to remember. The characters who offer these ways, as well as the methods themselves are tangibe tools for us all. Running through this story is the haunting children's lullaby, "All Through The Night". This book, like a lullaby, will gently guide and soothe a child across the darkness of grief

A Book Worth Buying

This uplifting book would be a great gift for anyone since it combines African American Prayers with traditional Catholic Prayers. At the beginning of the chapter there are lines from songs, I would joyfully sing. This obvious joy was infectious as people around me began to sing.

Since this book also has traditional Catholic Prayers, it invites other Catholic Readers into the African American experience. The prayers of this book reveals an intimate relationship with a faithful God, any Christian or anyone seeking answers to life's questions will discover that this little book is something to treasure.

Unique Collection

This collection of prayers is unique in a number of ways. First, it contains examples of the rich history of African American prayer that until recently was largely invoked spontaneously, but seldom written. Second, in addition to traditional Catholic and Christian prayers, its themes include African American experiences including racism, the importance of family, and the challenge of HIV/AIDS. Third, its organization is marked by titles from African American "spirituals" and Adinkra symbols native to Ghana.

For example, the section on prayers for children and families is based on the song "This Little Light of Mine" to emphasize the place of children in African American culture: "(They) are regarded as the most important gifts of God and as the wealth of a family," explain the editors. The Akoma, a heart-shaped symbol, represents essential elements of happy children and families: love, patience, and tolerance. Prayers cover such topics as African American families, students, fathers, and youth councils. Other sections focus on prayers for life in the world, petitions and meditations on the good ness of God, prayers to the saints and ancestors, and prayers for celebrations. Traditional Catholic prayers make up the final chapter.

The editors suggest that "Songs of Our Hearts" be used in combination with daily prayer with scripture and participation in the Eucharist. As to who might benefit from this work, I recommend it to all Christians hoping to enrich their prayer life and to learn more about African American spirituality.

A good companion to the first volume with great photos

I bought this book because I enjoyed the first volume so much (see my review for Southern Pacific's Coast Line.)

However, the second volume might be a bit of a letdown to those expecting something similar to the first volume. Signor indeed covered it all the first time around, and therefore does not attempt to do it again in this volume. Southern Pacific's Coast Line Pictorial is exactly what it professes to be, a companion edition that has some great photos. There are over 600 photographs; 140 of which are in color. Richard Steinheimer fans will like this book as 85 of Stein's photographs made it into the book.

I never did verify if there were pictures reprinted in the second volume that also appeared in the first, but if there were, their numbers were small based on my recollection.

The bottom line is that if you loved the first volume of Southern Pacific's Coast Line, then you should buy this volume too. It isn't the narrative with pictures that the first one is, but it compliments the first book nicely. It's priced high but worth it if you're looking for memories of the SP and its premier passenger line. You can always check out Signature Press' website for the description on this book that Amazon seems to be lacking.

A 'MUST READ' for the people in the oil industry
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-23
This is a great book in which the authors very tactfully unfold the story of the Spindletop Oil Field. With modern techniques of oil exploration one may never have the 'Spindletop Experience' ever again. This book would interest anyone who is even remotely related with the petroleum industry. It should make one appreciate the early days of oil industry on whose experiences the modern peroleum industry is based on. The last chapters may not interest some people as the book goes into the legal suits fought over the oilfield. Overall, I strongly recommend the modern 'oilmen' to read this book.

A fascinating account of the events and people who brought in the birth of the modern oil business. The book brings to life the time period, the cast of characters that were involved and the obstacles and naysayers which had to be overcome. See how hard work and dogged persistence by these men was rewarded not just once (as in the initial discovery of the field) but several times. The book is well written and moves along at a good pace. As a person involved in the oil business for 20 years, this book reminded my of why the oil business is so special.
