I needed to write a biography on John the Baptist for class. I didn't think it would be so hard, but finding a good book on John the Baptist wasn't so easy. This is the best one I found anywhere. This is the most exhaustive text on John I found anywhere and it takes everything into consideration. I highly recommend it for research, but it is written so well that it is good for even a curious reader.

Repent, Repent, Repent
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-11
Early in this comprehensive work, the author reminds us that John the Baptist's message emphasized sin, repentance, judgment, and hell, "topics that run counter to the more user-friendly religion of the twenty-first century." Burke, who holds a doctorate in theology from Fordham University, begins by tracing Old Testament patterns and prophesies that set the stage for John's appearance as "the last of the prophets and the first of the Christians." We learn of the culture into which John emerged after 20 years in the desert, his effect on the Israelites, and the parallels between his message and that of Jesus.

The chapter on John as a Model for Contemporary Christians goes into detail about what Burke calls "the sterner Christian virtues that need reinvigoration today," centered on repentance. Burke suggests that if John were alive today, his priority would be restoration of the sacrament of confession to a position of central importance. "He would require sincere acts of mortification as evidence of good faith."

Burke's work on John the Baptist, though scholarly, is nonetheless accessible to the layman. The layout and style are clear and inviting, and the author has included a number of tables to help clarify the text, questions for reflection on each chapter, and a detailed index. The text is enriched by references to artists' renderings of John the Baptist and their significance as well as opinions of scholars that may differ from those presented by the author. Burke closes with several pages of devotions to John the Baptist.

Individuals and groups would profit most by studying this work straight through, but an alternative approach that tailors the material to time constraints would also be of benefit.

Journey of A Soul

Book for sensitive and reflective minds.

Review Date: 1999-05-07
The writing of Mlikotin keeps alive the basic philosophical questions, and the paradox those questions bring up while living in the"real" world. Mlikotin animates the struggle between thinking and living, and the importance of honesty in human existence. The book inspires its readers to be the author's fellow travelleres, not one of his disciples. In the end, no matter what conclusions the author comes to in his journal, there is the beauty of the solitary search. The reader gets the feeling of the author's daily life just by reading his thoughts. Somehow what the author does not mention much (the incidents of daily existence) is still sensed because so many of his thoughts contain the reflection of the struggle with the author's social and professional responsibilities. In Mlikotin's prose logical thinking and aesthetic expression go together. He abides by the dictum that to express an image requires as much thinking, precision and methodology as to make a philosophical statement. Olivia Dresher. The greatest book in the genre of spiritual chronicles
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-25
The book belongs to the genre of spiritual chronicles or romances, the genre which the author himself introduced into American literature. In a spiritual romance one does not just narrate his or her life; he puts it into a story. Mlikotin's Journey is not a captain's log or a report. It has nothing to do with daily events, but with the author's spiritual turmoils. As the author assumes no message can last long without a union of logical thinking enveloped into an artistically satisfactory form. The form and style of the Journey are impeccable. Tha old dictum that to express an image requires as as much thinking as to make a philosophical statement is true in Mlikotin's writing.. The Journey is as much personal as universal. When you write about yourself you also write about the agonies and troubles of mankind. Your soul, as in this book, is nothing else but a catalyst. Mlikotin's final words are " I write, therefore I exist."

Monkey rules!

This definitive three volume set of 'Journey To The West' by Wu Cheng'en is a must read for anyone interested in fantasy and Chinese mythology. 'Journey To The West' has everything from monkey mayhem to monsters, and magic. The quest for the sacred Buddhist sutras in India makes for an exciting journey filled with danger, demons and damsels. If you love classic Chinese literature or Buddhism, then you have to read 'Journey To The West'. I understand that in 2001, a TV movie entitled, 'The Monkey King' is scheduled for released. The following is a summary of the movie: "American journalist Nick Orton is caught up in the world of Chinese gods and monsters while on a search for the long lost manuscript to 'Hsi Yu Chi' (The Journey to the West) by Wu Ch'eng En. He is accompanied on his journey by a humanoid ape with incredible strength and magical powers, a humanoid pig-man, and his brother-in-arms, an ex-cannibal. Based on one of the greatest stories in Chinese history." (Lawrence De Meza from imdb.com) So what are you waiting for, buy it now and read it before 'Monkey King' mania sweeps the States!

This book is one of the Four Great Novels in China. Everybody in China know this story. Sun WuKong--the monkey, Zhu Bajie--the pig, everybody like them. Though it was written in 1570s, it is still a great book for children.

What a shame that the publisher let this first rate book go out of print. Perhaps, the market can work if enough folks demand a new printing of the book.

Portraits of Joyce as a Young Dog

OK, so I basically stole the title for this review from Dylan Thomas (another author to read!). At any rate, it seems this oversized book is out of print, although Amazon.com will try to find it for you. If they can't...

122 pages of fascinating photos, drawings, manuscript revisions, and quotes by Joyce; statues, drawings, photos, and even stamps of Joyce! The prints are excellent, and help you feel like you know the man (and family) just a little bit better. Originally published at $39.95 (a price for Joyce fans only, I think), its new low cost makes it an excellent purchase for all interested in literature and/or photography. I haven't seen the $72 "Images of Joyce," (sold at Amazon) but this well-designed book, showing Joyce at various ages and locations, is well worth looking for.

Wonderful Companion Book

If you are a serious collector of Hopi katsinam (kachina dolls) or are seeking accurate illustrations of the nearly 400 katsinam, I would highly recommend this outstanding book as a companion to Barton Wright's foundational work (Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary). Neil David has been called the "Norman Rockwell of Native America" and rightfully so. His illustrations are some of the best and showing both front and back views of each katsina is much appreciated. Most of the 79 katsinam contained in this book are not in Wright's book and several are extremely rare and seldom, if ever, seen or carved. Start with Wright's book and then add this one. You can't go wrong with either!

A Must to Own

This is the most comprehensive book on the Kachina to date. This book is the only one where the illustrator has depicted not only the front of the figure, but also the back and this makes this book a must to own for anyone who studies the Kachina or who is an artist and wants to be completely accurate in the depiction of the figure. The figures are historically and spiritually exact and are certainly meant as a tribute to the figure as a revered being.Truly a fine publication and well worth the cost.

The Best King Arthur Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-07
In preparation for the novel I have been writing, I went to the library and read every single King Arthur book I could find and then some. I even got about 100 pages into the original Malroy, but being only 11, I stopped quickly.
However, of all the novels I have read, this is by far the best. The writing is wonderful and the story is there. Plus, instead of only getting a narrative, the knights actually talk and are a whole lot more descriptive and real than some of the other books I've read.
I highly reccommend this to anyone who loves the king arthur legends and want a story that sticks really close to the original.

Great book.

"Ladies Who Knit For A Living" is a collection of short stories by Westville, Illinois native Anthony E Stockanes. Beautifully written and imaginative the author has drawn on his own experiences and the people around him growing up in both Chicago and downstate in Westville to create a work that will charm both old and young alike, tho I don't recommend for children, the informed and intelligent preteen may enjoy Mr. Stockanes humour. The only thing that I find lacking unfortunately in this book, is a short story that the author published in the Daily Illini in the late 70's I believe entitled "Seed Notes" which was, he later revealed, based on fact. Sadly, we lost this wonderful writer to cancer in 1999, But this work, a compilation of his stories is timeless and a testament to his genius. We can only hope that perhaps eventually the U of I press will re-release the book with the addition of "Seed Notes" and a few other select stories Mr. Stockanes did not include the first time around. Very highly recommended.

A good all around Lamborghini Book

Review Date: 2008-01-14
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I ordered it with some others and was not expecting this one to be as good as it was.

The Good = This book does a really good job of presenting a lot of information in a quick and easy to read format. The book covers history, people, the cars and even mentions the marine engine business. There is an article written by an owner who bought an old car and restored it. I was surprised how much information was there. Each chapter had articles included in it, as a way to get more information about a subject, without interupting the flow of the story. I loved the format. For the money, this is a great buy.

The Bad = Some of the pictures could have been better (there are still plenty of good ones). This book never gets too in depth on any one subject. It is more of a "little of everything" style of writing. Not a lot of new information for the Lamborghini book collector.

Conclusion = This is a really good overall Lamborghini book. For the price it is wonderful. For the hard core reader/owner/collector, this might seem a bit light.

A comprehensive guide to Lamborghini cars.

Bray et.al is the best physiology text avaliable today. This text clearly presents a range of physiological topics and is well written by the learned staff of the Otago University Physiology Dept. Prof. Bray is to be commended for his concise and accurate editorial style. I found the figures particularly understandable and loved thier minimalistic style. A MUST for every med student and those interested in how the body functions. I look forward to the next edition.
