Seifert's first novel is truly fantastic! It explores religion, sexual orientation, tolerance and sense of community and begins a dialogue everyone should be a part of. The plot captures your attention while the social commentary makes you question - and re-align! - your moral compass. Great "food for thought" that everyone will enjoy!

I read this book twice as it answered for me some profound questions between spirituality, discrimination, and sexual preferences. The subject matter is a major turning point in our history as we seen before for hundreds of years in American history and World wide history.

This is a tender story of love and the ostracization of that love by others. The setting takes place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and this author makes you believe you are there beholding the exquisite beauty of the mountains.

Read this book for illumination and enjoyment.

The Rising Storm is an excellent piece of fiction, telling an important and affirming story about faith, diversity, sexual orientation, religion, and values. The author skillfully crafted this story to present many sides of issues of importance to us all. Whether you're on the left, the right, on in the center, this book should be required reading.

Excellent story and plot which takes you all through Boston and then internationally. Wonderful description of the characters and places involved which draws you in and then has a unique way of addicting you to the story so as to make it IMPOSSIBLE to put down. His characters are interesting, to say the least, which adds tremendously to the suspense of the plot. And, combine that to the conflict they face and it's, it's just a wonderful outcome. It was so refreshing and enjoyable to read something by an 'unknown" author. I was very, very impressed by that and enjoyed it even more because of the unknown status of the author. I am hoping he writes more as I loved the journey he brought me on. You will not be bored with a single page. Buy it and enjoy!

I could not put this book down because: the characters were so true-to-life riddled with human frailities. Easy to empathize with or get angry @ them.

The author's descriptive ability to make me feel that I too was traveling with the tour group and seeing the same sights, sharing the same emotions, frustrations, fears.

Lastly; and for some maybe a reason to read this book if supsense isn't enough, read what really developed in the darkroom chapter!

This book is one of the finest that I have read in a long time. Not only was it suspenseful, but because it was "set" locally, it made the characters far more realistic. Mr. DiNardo keeps his readers at the eadge of their seats throughout the novels duration, and I recommend this novel to all; even if you're not a fan of suspense. You can't put this book down!

If suspense is your addiction this book is an excellent candidate to satisfy your thirst. Logical and cohesive the story line remains interesting and captivating. Entertaining local color in the description of a less than ordinary Italian family with all the emotional components of family loyalty. The plot proceeds with careful clarity and attention to detail. Quite realistic yet imaginatively creative in the plot's development. Interesting, true to life characters add to the intrigue. Most worthy for the intrigue yet entertainment searching reader. An exciting and stimulating suspense fiction for the reader searching for a can't-drop-it suspense story.

This is one of the best photographic books I have ever seen. The photographers who took these photos really captured the feeling and emotions of the artists at the time. All the classic and famous personalities of music are here, from Ike and Tina to Bob Dylan; from Elvis to Bowie to Nirvana; from The Beatles and Stones to Alice Cooper and all that lies between (too too many to list here). An excellent array of both black and white and colour shots. The close ups allow you to see into the sometimes troubled, sometimes happy, but ever changing eyes of these rock icons. The broader shots show some of these bands and performers in their most comfortable and bizarre surrounds. A worthwhile purchase, that allows you to ponder each and every photo for hours and hours. In the back is a complete copy (small version) of the photos together with a who is who. Buy the hardcover; not only is it worth the price, but it will last forever. This is easily the greatest and most comprehensive collection of rock and roll pictures in one publication!

I wish I could have been there when the pictures were taken!

The photography is awesome. It really captures the attitdue of the musician. I would recommend this book to any one impressed by the talent of these outstanding artists. I am 18 and I loved the book. My dad is 50 and liked the book just as much!!!!!

It's good to see a new version of an old favorite. I have two of the earlier editions. My only real complaint about the coverage in the new volume is that it's too bad that more details on the new Rolls-Royce Phantom could not have been included. This is a very handy book for the Rolls-Royce enthusiast.

My other complaint about the book is the printing quality. A number of the pages were printed on damaged paper which had streaks and other imperfections, pg 76 in my copy as an example. Since this was a personal gift to myself, I really didn't want to go through the aggrivation and wait for a new copy. I don't know if the steep discount on the book was due to the copies purchased by Amazon were irregular or not.

Anyhow enough said, the coverage maintians the level of RR history set down by Tony Bird.

I can't begin to tell you how helpful I found and will continue to find this book. It delves deep into the Bible to explain all the ins and outs of God's saving people from their sins. Hoekema interacts with church history, contemporary theology, popluar teaching across denominations, as well as classical, medieval, and reformation era theologians on the subject of salvation. This book is thorough yet readable. It is not for a new Christian, but if you want to go beyond the basics this is the book for you.

Review Date: 2005-04-20
This book is a very good outline of soteriology from the Reformed perspective. Anyone who wants to get a good dose of the doctrine of salvation from a traditional Reformed perspective should read this. Though it gets into technicalities and some Greek it is readable and organized. However, Hoekema's "Dutch Reformed" background lets some of his interpretations be influenced by that background. For example, his interpretation of Romans 7. For students wanting to understand what the Reformed camp teaches regarding salvation this book is for you.

I couldn't get over how this guy did SO MANY drugs and is still alive! And in relatively good health it seems. He certainly is a master at taking narcotics. Most people would have OD'ed I think. I wouldn't know a song by the RHCP if I heard it, but being a reader of biographies, this one sounded juicy....sex, drugs and rock & roll most definitely. I got a bit tired of reading about drugs and more drugs and every time I thought he had it licked he went back. Like he says-insanity. It's got to be. Girlfriend after girlfriend, wow. His story continues. I would be curious if he's EVER yet found true love and how long his sobriety and drug free time is. I don't think he'll ever be totally free until he finds the True Higher Power, but there's still time. Well written, very interesting. Quite unbelievable but then a lot of musicians end up this way. I don't think they are good role models for our children. They are so nonconformist. I don't envy their lives at all. At least he didn't seem obsessed by having lots of money eventually.

The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi and Arrowroot

And as fine a piece of dreamy writing as 'Arrowroot' is, the melding in the former of Tanizaki's detail-gilded historical tales with his darkly comic studies of sexual obsession makes for a heady brew indeed! (It has a breakneck page-turner quality that contrasts nicely with the more languidly paced 'Arrowroot.') As always, his prose is a pleasure to read, even in translation. I would rank that story with his exquisite long novel 'Sasame Yuki.' Very highly recommended.

An obsession with noseless heads.

The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi is a masterpiece of dysfunction. A lord who becomes obsessed with 'woman heads,' noseless heads collected at the ends of mighty battles. The samurai are to collect the heads of fallen foes during battle, but the more kills, the harder it is to carry all the heads, so instead they take noses, and it is the job of a group of women to fit the noses back onto the voided faces. It is this ritual the young Lord of Musashi comes across, and the rest makes for a great read!

A perverse Samurai Lord and a nostalgic trip to a mountain village
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-11
Junichiro Tanizaki is often a complicated, perverse author. He delves into the mysterious realm of sexual fetishism and body horror, presenting grotesqueries in a uniquely straight-forward writing style that is itself neither fetishistic nor perverse, lending an air of normalcy to the bizarre figures that populate his tales. At the same time, he can write sensitive, beautiful stories without a hint of sexual exploration.

Taking a similar theme in two very different directions, "The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi/Arrowroot" showcases these two sides of Tanizaki's talent. Both deal with "books within a book," using this device as a launching point for the narrative. One is a dark tale of body horror and sexual perversion, and the other is a simple piece of nostalgia. The two stories were said to be the author's favorites.

"The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi" revolves around a fictional Samurai lord, and two fictional "re-discovered texts" that detail the secret sexual life of the Lord of Musashi. From the two books, The Dream of a Night and Memiors of Doamai, the narrator pieces together the cruel pleasures of a man obsessed with nose-less severed heads. In his young boyhood, he watched the women washing the severed heads of defeated Samurai and experienced his first sexual desire while watching their beautiful fingers manipulating the grotesque objects. Unquenched bye the passing years, his fetish leads him to an affair with the passionately cruel Lady Kikyo, who's father's nose he severed as a boy. Finally, his own marriage is encountered, and the abuse of his servant Doamai.

The writing style, using an almost lectural tone of one giving a class on the life of the Lord of Musashi, softens the impact of the horror of using severed heads as sexual aids. It is a very interesting story, in the true Tanizaki style.

"Arrowroot" is much shorter, and is set in the hidden mountains of Yoshino, in Nara prefecture. Two friends take a trip to the mountains, under the premise of going to see a fabled drum in the possession of a small village family. The author thinks of the trip as research into a possible historical novel detailing the Southern Court, while his friend has a secret motive. The story is very beautifully written, sensitive and nostalgic. It is a complete reversal from "The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi" and yet is somehow a perfect companion.

Remember, these are novels...

This books contains two novellas by Junichiro Tanizaki and tranlated by Anthony Chambers. Tanizaki wrote these in 1930 and they are suppose to be his favorite.

The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi is filled with scandel. The subject is of a great lord whose sexual fixations includes a sick obsession in severed heads, espcially those without noses. This is more of a horror story of old.

Arrowroot is meditative, poetic, it describes the journey of two friends traveling together. One is looking for information about a lost imperial court from the 15th centuary, the other is trying to understand his dead mother.

I thought that this book was informative. He describes the herb, and the tribe(s) that used it, and how. There is several pages on the tribal tradition, but I would have liked to have seen more indepth about several of the more common tribes and their herbal medicinal usage and practices.

I really appreciated the author bringing together how the whole person must be treated in order to treat dis-ease. This is really missing in allopathic medicine.

I would recommend this book to any herbal practitioner that would like a different view of herbal treatment, using traditional Native American ways.

Another book you don't loan out, you'll miss having it for reference.

It lists recipes for ailments, and companies where you can purchase the items needed in the mixes.

I had to buy more than one, one for loans, one for keeps.

The best advice is also given in this book, just because one mix worked for another, it may not be the same for you. We are all different, and so are the many different species of plants. So it doesn't just give you one recipe for one ailment, unlike so many other herbal books.

When I was producing a video biography of Longfellow for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill in 1992, I needed a one-volume selection of Longfellow's poetry, and this book did the job very nicely. It includes Longfellow's best-known poems as well as two others that were never published during the poet's lifetime but must be classed with his finest work. The introduction by Lawrence Buell provides a useful biographical sketch and a thoughtful discussion of why Longfellow--the most famous American of his time--is not more widely read today. Buell's observations may get you thinking about this schoolbook poet in a different way.

Longellow is the poet of the American public school. 'Evangeline' 'The Courtship of Miles Standish' 'Paul Revere's Ride' ' The Village Blacksmith' ' 'A Psalm of life' and others. His reputation in the nineteenth century was great and overwhelming. Yet his reputation in the realm of poetry today is not with those artists of the canon, Tennyson and Browning in England, and Whitman and Dickinson in the United States. Perhaps it is because his poems are taken to be not inventive enough linguistically. Perhaps it is because the very thing many have praised him for his musicality seems today to be less than the irregular music of a Hopkins or Dylan Thomas.
In any case in Longfellow one will find sound solid lines, a certain moral stance , a kind of American integrity. For someone like myself reading Longfellow is a nostalgic trip and a new perspective on what I read so long ago. He has much to give even if it is not quite at the highest poetic level.
