I am a fan of Anthony Browne's illustrations and I am sad that so many of his books are out of print. But Gorilla is a great one to own. The picures repay study, as they are full of wonderful details. The story itself is poignant, with a hopeful ending.

Sad (for adults) heart warming story. Beautiful drawings.

My son (5) and I love this story and so does any kid I read this story to. We love it mostly because of the beautiful drawings (some sad, some funny) which are sensitive and full of little details that enrich the tale. Check out the incredible caged sad monkey (no need of words) or the funny "Super Gorilla" picture. We also like the text that is simple and straightforward on one hand but relies heavily on the pictures for further layers of understanding. Adults can argue about the subject of this story - I personally think it is about human relations (what's important) - but heard other say it is about fear (?) but all this is unimportant - kids and adults alike are drawn to the amazing drawings and can sense the richness of this book. Gorillas are sure to become your favorite animals.

This book came to the school that I teach in a sample set from a publisher. It has stayed with me for years. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is better yet. The story is about a young girl who goes to the zoo with her gorilla friend (her father is too busy to take her. Her father finds time for her in the end and her gorilla turns back into a stuffed toy. Many children can relate to what this little girl goes through. The book has so much more to offer than what I can tell you. It is truely beautiful. I will put it next to my Narnia set...I am finally buying a copy for myself. Don't miss out on this gem.

A WONDERFUL NIGHT! A WONDERFUL BOOK!

Popular author/illustrator Anthony Browne has garnered enough accolades to fill many a shelf: the international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Kurt Moschler Award three times, and the Kate Greenaway Medal twice. We are reminded of how richly deserved these honors are with "Gorilla," a warmly satisfying story of the bond between a young girl and an animal.

Gorillas are the love of Hannah's life and her heart's desire is to see a real one. Regrettably, her father is either too tied up or too weary to take her to the zoo. When Hannah asked him a question, his usual reply was, "Not now. I'm busy. Maybe tomorrow."

But, did you know that surprises can take place on a birthday? Hannah had asked her father for a gorilla and, sure enough, he gave her one but it was only a toy. She tossed it aside and fell fast asleep.

She was awakened in the middle of the night by a smiling gorilla who invited her to go to the zoo. She wasn't at all frightened, and eagerly joined him. That was just the beginning of their nocturnal adventure.

It was a wonderful night that Hannah will never forget, nor will young readers soon forget this happy, imaginative tale.

Now the theory is behind you and you are into Physical exams and History taking and diagnostics. This book is a must for you. In 397 Chapters it tells you about almost all human illnesses. Each chapter starts with theory (physiology), History taking, continues with Diagnosis and Treatment, it even tell you how to approach the patient what to look and what to disregard. Almost 2600 pages, takes two to carry, requires own stand in your home like Webster's dictionary but have more information compared to other 2600 page books due to fine print and unfortunately very minimal pictures or diagrams. You might want to get complete with pocket book edition for handiness when you need it. This book will not help in your diagnosis but when you think you had diagnosed than you can refer to this to see to confirm or rethink.

This is Harrison's textbook of medicine, known , read and loved the world over. Who really needs an introduction to this Medical Bible?

Harrison's is probably the best medical reference for medical professionals there is. As expected, the 14th edition of this authoritative reference lives up to its name. This book is not meant to be used as a textbook by medical students (or anyone for that matter). For those looking for a textbook, I suggest "Cecil's textbook of medicine", which does a beautiful job in that area. However, when you need to know the last say on any topic in Internal Medicine, your best bet remains Harrison's.

Excellent board review book

Review Date: 2008-03-21
This book is for preparation for the internal medicine boards, which I am currently studying for. The chapters are divided by specialty for focused review. There are over 1000 questions and they focus on points that would be found in Harrison's text.

The questions tend to be fairly difficult and I suspect they might be harder than actual board questions. However, the majority of questions focus on the key points of the "need to know" diseases of internal medicine. So knowing these questions will likely be good prep for the boards.

The answers provided are quite detailed and it is like reading a summary out of Harrison's. The incorrect answers are reasoned out, which is helpful.

In comparison to MKSAP, the questions are likely more of a "classical" disease presentation sytle and less of a clinical approach style that MKSAP often uses. Difficulty level is roughly equivalent.

I would recommend this book to anyone preparing for the boards. It should be used in addition to other question banks for diversity of preparation.

The first question I had when I was to purchase this book was whether this book was good for the USMLE Step 2 and 3.

The answer, in my case atleast, is an emphatic 'yes'. From my experience of Step 1, I have come to the conclusion that there is no quick solution to the USMLE exams - books like First Aid and some other 100 pg 'high yeild' review books can help you pass and score above average but getting great scores requires more than just that. The questions on the exam [step 1] were very varied and I don't expect the questions on step 2 to stick to what Kaplan and other review books call 'high yeild'. Being a little over-prepared is definitely worth the effort. And that's where this book is an absolute ace!

About this book - about 1000 Qs - well researched - fantastically up-to-date - it "is" the 2005 edition!. They are well arranged - meaning if you are in a chapter on rheumatology, the questions on Rheumatoid arthritis are clustered together. While solving them and while reading the solutions, one gets a wholesome idea about that disease. This also means that you don't have to read another 'review' book to get to know the subject matter. The explanations are detailed enough to make using a short review book superfluous. That the answers are referenced to the corresponding pages of the Harrison's Textbook is an added benefit.

About the questions, more impressive than the difficulty level is their construction. All choices are well thought out and there are hardly any sitters. The questions stay away from tiny details and do a great job at testing basic concepts in a somewhat difficult fashion - ideal for USMLE step 2 preparation in my opinion.

Guess that'll be it.

If you are reading this, you are probably preparing for an ABIM internal medicine exam in addition to all your other duties. There is never enough time, is there? Well, I was preparing for the ABIM recertification exam, and it had been 10 years since I'd finished residency. I had slogged through the Mayo review book over the course of five months, dutifully going over every page. Tres painful. There were three weeks left before the exam, and I figured I'd give this book a try. I quickly discovered how ignorant I was, despite doing the Mayo book. Charlie Wiener taught me a lot of critical care medicine way back when, and this text was a lot like sitting down with Charlie. If you are a former member of the Osler Medical House Staff (or did residency training at some other urban hospital), the case scenarios will give you flashbacks. The questions are well-written, and the answers give you really good feedback. The questions are highly relevant, reflecting what the ABIM wants you to know. There are a handful of errors here and there, where the letter of the answer in the key has a different letter than the same correct answer in the question... perhaps the editors changed the order of some of the answers or some of the distractor answers between editions. Mildly annoying, but not fatal.

I got my pass notice from the ABIM today. I'm convinced that Charlie's book made a crucial difference. Yeah, the book lists for $55, but it's a bargain compared to the $550 it costs to take the recert examination over. :-)

Good luck!

Fan based activism is the subject of Marvin Lachman's amusing if not too terribly insightful new book THE HEIRS OF ANTHONY BOUCHER.

I've never been to a Bouchercon myself, and I would definitely add a star if I had, since for Lachman and his crew they represent the highest achievement in fantopia. Each of them is detailed here from top to bottom, including some frank discussion you will not want to miss on who was the nicest guests and who the most obsteperous and unpleasant. Also, some details of failed entertainment (a magician who faced the crowd at the 1987 Bouchercon gets a new one ripped into him here). Lachman cheerfully follows the late Michael Dibdin's acid observation that a gathering of fans is rather like the Revenge of the Nerds movies, and some of the fans are weirder than the rest! And he does name names, including some stories from back in the old days when social drinking was bigger than it is now, and any party was an excuse for some boozehounds to get royally smashed.

Controversy followed the fans, who like modernday bloggers only infrequently felt constrained by the professional obligations of their opposite numbers in the publishing/reviewing sphere. Thus a fan magazine called John Dickson Carr "second-rate," and other fans disagreed sharply. Greedy booksellers were publicly named and shamed for their outrageous pricing. Few remained unscathed, and the fans represent every notch of the political spectrum. Some have gone on to great things, writing the definitive biographies of their heroes, while others have been content to lobby for more "THE CAT WHO" books. Poisoned Pen Press is to be congratulated for publishing a book with so many different stories in it, and for printing so many candid snapshots of a grizzled school of activist readers. I came away from this book wondering what Anthony Boucher would have made of this phenomenon, but I feel sure he would have responded warmly to Marvin Lachman's geniality and high spirits.

My first Bouchercon was Milwaukee in 1999, which Lachman says was probably the high mark of Bcons in terms of organization and efficiency. Now I'm spoiled. I've attended a lot of mystery and writing conferences since and it's still tops.

Lachman also writes the "Out of the Past" column for MYSTERY NEWS, in which he sends readers scurrying to used bookshops for out-of-print relics from forgotten writers. If you're a fan of vintage writers from the early pulp and paperback era, you'll find that Lachman is frequently on those panels. So who better to chronicle the history of Bouchercon, the world's largest mystery convention?

If you've attended the Bcons he describes, you'll smile at the memories he evokes; if you didn't attend, you'll feel a wistful tug for having missed them. For each convention, he gives the highlights, the major events and attendance statistics. The behind the scenes anecdotes are especially fun.

This is a real gem for die-hard mystery fans and a special treat for anyone who has ever been (or may be contemplating being) one of the thankless Bouchercon volunteers or Bouchercon Organizers who make these events possible. I'd like to see him update it every year or post updates on a Website.

THE HEIRS OF ANTHONY BOUCHER is above all comprehensive and it reviews just about everything one will want to know about the history of mystery fandom. Marvin Lachman seems to have an ecyclopedic memory for details and events and has enough anecdotes and quotes to keep the book interesting.

The text follows a chronological pattern starting in 1930. It covers fan clubs, magazines, conventions, organizations, famous fans, scholarship by fans and mystery fandom in cyberspace.Even a casual reader of mystery jounals such as CADS, MYSTERY READERS JOURNAL and the now defunct ARMCHAIR DETECTIVE will recognize many familiar names including Geoff Bradley, Janet Rudolph, Otto Penzler, Bill Deeck, Bill Crider, Al Hubin, Charles Shibuk, Gary Warren Niebuhr, Bob Adey, Jon L. Breen, John Apostolou,Doug Greene, Philip Scowcroft and Ellen Nehr.

The big lesson to be learned here, in my opinion, is that remarkable work can be accomplished by people who are willing to explore their interests in depth with passion. There is no better example of this than the legacy now being created by Marvin Lachman.

Magnificent achievement!

This is a fabulous account! I can't think of anyone who could have done this better than Marv Lachman, I can't think of any bases it leaves untouched. It's timely, comprehensive, sympathetic, opinionated (in the best sense), insightful, well organized and beautifully written. Anyone with an interest in mystery fandom and its development over the years since its beginnings in the 1960s will cherish this book.

I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

Paul does a good job of explaining the construction process, lavishly illustrated with clear photos and drawings. There are many nice projects by the author and others.

This book is perfect for the beginning to intermediate woodworker who has a table saw and plate joiner and needs some guidance on how to use them on projects. Also ideal for swiping ideas or just learning how to do some simple case construction.

The best part of this book is the first twenty two pages. Paul explains customizing and planning a design to fit your need and then goes into working with different materials. He even explains and has a drawing to show the proper way to install a screw. His information on joinery is easy to understand with the shop drawings to help explain them. Most people think you need a large selection of tools to build a project, not so as is demonstrated with the list Paul gives you. Layout and stock preperation along with the triangular marking system is information every woodworker should know to make a project easier to build, and finally someone gives us a simple finish to put on a project instead of worrying about using expensive spray equipment. Throughout the book there are many tips that can be applied to any project. The photos are great, the book is well written with some fantastic projects anyone would be proud to show off in their home. Thanks Paul for a great addition to my library and my shop.

Taunton Press realizes that a how-to book must not only deliver in content, but must be able to stand the abuse that taking it to the shop can cause. They use a slick cover and page material that looks like it could be damp-mopped many times without wilting. The content will also pass the test of time without wilting also. Anthony has brought six great woodworkers, including himself, to take on thirteen different storage projects.

There is probably not a project in this book that anyone would have a problem with. The attention to detail is amazing; from the complete and accurate cut-lists, to the step by step written procedure for each operation with outstanding photographs to illustrate what tool or machine to use. We have all been advised to do "dry clamp-ups" to make sure of glueing sequence and optimum clamp placement. This is covered in detail on almost every project.

For those of you who are Turners, you get your chance on the legs of the Storage Bench, and Allen Spooner shows how to book-match veneer for the Man's Jewelry Box.

I have found Anthony's book to be more than worthwhile addition to my library, and I am sure you will also. Where else can you get working drawings, great instructions and photographs for thirteen projects for this price?

Paul Anthony's new 'Home Storage Projects' from Taunton Press is not a run-of-the-mill 'store-it' campaign. He teaches fine woodworking along the way, with items as simple as a CD cabinet or pantry door storage. For those who want more complicated pieces, he offers a bench with curved, sleigh-bed end handles and a built-in of under-bed storage with a pedestal and drawers that roll out on both sides. He shows how to construct a printer stand that looks elegant enough to be a display case in a living room.

A long kitchen work station, a file cabinet, and a desktop organizer designed for real storage of work at hand, are some of the projects included. A mobile closet for guests, a man's jewelry box, and a medicine cabinet with a locking partition for drugs, are all presented with design options for fitting to required spaces or use.

The author offers up shop jigs for mitered clamping cauls, spline miter mortises and tapering. Hints show how to set router depth for leaf hinges in an instant, how to spring a batten for a fair curve, and how to install a full mortise lock. Producing these projects off the fully illustrated instructions would be a basic course in woodworking, with guidance in resawing, joinery and simple finishes.

The nice thing about this book is that the author never forgets to inform the reader why he is doing something, so it all makes sense as you go along. Illustrations and photos are clear and move the work along step by step. Selecting a space in the home, then designing a project to fill that space, is one of the best ways to learn design and construction techniques, and that is where this book succeeds so well. From small projects to large, there are useful pieces here for nearly everyone.

This is a classic Rohr book because he gives new thought to his life-long pursuit of "Francis: Rebuild My Church." I especially like his "beyond victimhood" chapter because it encourages me to be a faithful Catholic in the midst of all the "darkness." I now cling to the comment "the cross is about standing against hate without becoming hate yourself." Rohr has done it again -- great encouragement to keep serving this church we love so much!

"One must live in a state of permanent dissatisfaction with the Church." Wow! (a quote Rohr uses in the book by Italian Monsignor, Richard Guardini, early 20th century) "And one cannot separate Christ from His cross. And one cannot separate Christ from His bloody painful Church." Rohr teaches (to me at least) that we should live Christlike behavior instead of our pompous duality, always joining hands to be against some other "thing/persons/religion/denominations/etc. He set fire to my weakened human condition that I seem to whine about all time to myself. We must suffer to get to the light at the end of the tunnel, but we "must" go through the darkness of the tunnel to get to the light. I loved the book.

It amazes me that a person who writes as much as Father Rohr can be as fresh and insightful as he is in each new book. Hope Against Darkness is nothing short of brilliant. As I understand him, Rohr argues that the spiritual searcher of today is caught between the modern and the post-modern worldviews. Both are no longer acceptable, but both contain strengths we ought to retain as best we can. The anxiety that arises from this ambiguous state of homelessness is the dis-ease he treats in this book, and his remedy is a richly creative appeal to Franciscan spirituality. Simply wonderful! A book to read, re-read, and give to others.

I have recently begun exploring Christianity after many years away from the church. Christianity is laden with language that is misunderstood and dog tired. I've been really seeking what all of that language and symbolism is pointing toward. And does any of it dovetail with my own spiritual experience. There were points reading this book where I was truly elated because aspects of the deep heart of Christianity just glowed at me with the lustre of something true.

Rohr's exploration of victimhood and scapegoating seemed so deeply appropriate in the post September 11th world. The notion of transferring our pain, vanquishing it and making ourselves mighty as we assign it to someone else. The challenge is, of course, to be aware of and hold your pain, allowing it to transform you. I'm no Richard Rohr so suffice it that my paraphrase is profoundly anemic.

The book is dense and I'm sure I didn't really "get it" all because truthfully I have no idea how any of the contents relate to the title of the book or the chapter titles for that matter. None of that detracts from the truly profound insights he shares.

Rohr strikes me as someone who has a certain clarity and a desire to convey it, share it, spread it about. I had a moment of suspicion at one point, thinking he was telling me "it's like this". But it passed. While I wouldn't say the book is chock full of humility it leaves plenty of room for a reader to think it through. I really appreciated all of the biblical references and looked them all up. He uses the New Jerusalem Bible. Mine is the New American Standard Bible. It was interesting how far apart some of the translations were.

Very satisfying. His admission at the end that he's still open to well-reasoned persuasion is an inspiration. That the works of this man have never been filmed stuns me. If you like Piers Anthony at all you'll enjoy this quite personal book.

In his second autobiography, popular science fiction and fantasy author Piers Anthony picks up right where he left off in his earlier "Bio of an Ogre."

In this volume, Piers goes into more detail about his fans, attending conventions, meeting and dealing with other "professional" writers and takes on the giant publishing industry.

If you want to find out what really goes on in the publishing world, and what it takes to even get a book published, you will really enjoy Piers' experiences. It is a wonder that ANY book makes it to publications. Dirty dealings, terrible tricks, and ugly underhandedness are revealed for all the world to see.

Ever the forceful opponent, Piers was not one to just roll over and take it. He fought back, got blacklisted, and fought even harder.

A truly enjoyable read. If you are a Piers Anthony fan, here is a rare chance to grab a detailed behind the scenes look at his life for the past 10+ years.

As a long-time Anthony reader, it was a delight to hear more about what makes this master wordsmith tick -- as well as ticked off.

I've just reread it, and found the ethical discussion solid. He clearly does not take the easy path -- but this is one author who has come a long way, with his integrity intact. The world would be a whole lot better if more people thought things out as deeply as he does.

The reader will find some interesting insights into the world of publishing and genre fandom, some thoughts about what the ethical way of dealing with various situations is, and plenty of conversational Anthony style, made popular in his author's notes.

More than anything else, this autobiographical sketch allows us a while in his company, following his thoughts through their intricate paths and philosophical hoops, to a final statement of personal values. Indeed a precious while -- and an interesting read, too.

"New Edition"

Not very helpful to list this as the "new edition." Is it the third edition, the second edition, or the second edition revised? I would like to buy this book, but the ridiculously convoluted array of editions makes it diffcult. This is what I've gathered so far. There are:

0896840948 Orient Book Distributors; Second edition (June 1980)
B0006E4CAO Motilal Banarsidass; 2d rev. ed edition (1980) (same as above?)
8120817419 Motilal Banarsidass,India; "New Ed edition" (January 1, 2000)
8120808185 Motilal Banarsidass,India; 3rd edition (February 4, 2004) (same as above?)

Any comments clearing up this mess would be most welcome - particularly whether the 2000 paperback and 2004 hardcover are the same edition.

A Must Read for any Serious Student of Early Buddhism

AK Warder is the established authority on Indian Buddhism. He also authored the most easily and widely used Pali textbook of our time "Introduction to Pali." This is not a light read - expect a slow start if you are just beginning to enter or study the history of the Middle Way, or if you are less inclined to academic reads; expect a very challenging and enlightening read, even should the case be the opposite. I found this book to be quite objective in its look at the major philosophical schisms that occurred early on in Buddhist thought, something I had nearly lost hope in finding. In addition, Warder does a splendid job of painting a clear picture for the reader of the times in those regions (the Vrji Republic and Magadha) where Buddhism flourished and competed for patronage with other forms of shramanic philosophies and with the long-established Vedic/Bhramanic orthodoxy. I'd say this is the best read of my last few years combined. It will be referenced repeatedly. Warder uses Classical Sanskrit terminology throughout the work. I personally would have preferred Pali terminology, or perhaps a combination. Apart from this minor issue, I cannot stress enough the importance of this work to a student's understanding of the early movement of Buddhism. -- Anson Holzer

i have not actually finished this book yet, but i know that it is definitely a great book. this book is amazingly well documented and serves as a very informative source dealing with a subject that recieves very little attention in modern american society which is much more focused on zen buddism and tibetan buddism. before the book begins the the author goes to great lengths to establish a historically accurate structure within which the contents of the book lie. it is probably the most historically accurate book i have ever read dealing with any religion, a feat that is increadibly hard to accomplish due to the great exagerations that are present in all religions, especially very old (and originally oral) ones such a buddhism. i am currently taking a zen buddhism class and have taken many other classes in buddhism, yet one thing that has always troubled me has been the lack of information presented on indian buddhism. this book, thankfully, answered half my questions in the first fifty pages, and while it is heavy reading, anyone seriously interested in the dharma or the complex state of political and philosophical affairs in india that shaped and borrowed from the buddhas teachings will eat this up. it not only explores the original teachings of the buddha, but it also gives as close to a historically "true" account of the buddhas life and interactions with society as could ever be achieved short of being there yourself. i especially enjoyed this book for it shows the immense compassion and humanity present in orthodox southern buddhism (mostly refered to as theravada today).END

A Classic in it's Field

Warder is one of the giants of his generation on Buddhist research, casting a long shadow over his time teaching at the University of Toronto. Though semi-retired, he still occassionally teaches a class on the history of Asian Buddhism for the Nalanda College of Buddhist Studies, and this book, no surprise, is a main text for that class, as well as the one on Introductory Buddhism. It really is one of the classic works on the period of early Buddhism, a time that goes largely ignored in the modern West's taste for Mahayana forms of Buddhism. Most don't realize that Buddhism quickly split up into nearly two dozen schools with some fairly significant differences between them. Warder covers not only them, but also the tangled history and context that shaped these early Buddhists. It is detailed and thorough to a level that would boggle the layperson, but is well worth the time and concentration needed if you are specifically interested in this time period. Not only does it contain good chapters on what you would normally expect, such as the Buddha's life and doctrines, but there are also chapter length discussions on issues that are often sidelined, such as how the Buddhist writings were preserved and collected, and how popularization effected it's teachings. Over all, it's a grande job, so don't be afraid to have it imported.

The authors give a well-written introduction as well as many insights into the design of interactive tv systems. This is a must-have for anyone new in this field. The book presents much more information than those on the interactive-mhp.org website.

We started our OCAP project prior to the arrival of this book and had to rely on digging through all of the different, confusingly referenced, standards. Every chapter of this book caused a light bulb to click on with a big "ah ha!" Don't get started without reading a copy of this book. It's a 10 to 1 reduction in pain.

This an excellent book! A must have! I strongly recommend it to anyone willing to have a broad and at the same time in-depth view into the numerous concepts and APIs necessary for designing IDTV applications. Several code snippets are provided to illustrate how each API can be used: this can help save a lot of time as the DVB MHP and OCAP specs are a little bit large.
