Briefly -- On the hairy edge of technology...Review Date: 2004-07-07
I haven't read far through the book yet, nor tried the examples, but the reading is very presentable and the topics are well aligned with existing needs for performance optimized software on PDA/Phone devices.
IntelPRESS has good connections with the hardware developers at Intel, and the book has been reviewed by some of the key Intel Developers and Systems Integrators. In a world where correctly surfing the technology wave is the difference between staying afloat and drowning -- I look to IntelPress to keep my head above water.

Reads like a novelReview Date: 2006-10-26
The first interview catches Aldrich just after the start of his career, so the interviews proceed with the career, as opposed to just having him reflect back on things from years later. We see what Aldrich is doing and hear him talk about projects that never come to pass.
A few fascinating things emerge. He apparently never got over getting fired from "The Garment Jungle." Even when he is a success after "The Dirty Dozen," he still is bitter/regretful about that. Also, his relationship with Burt Lancaster, which seemed okay on the outside (they made about four films together) is revealed as contentious and mistrustful.
If you like Aldrich's films, you need to read this book. It will tell you things you never knew and will add to your appreciation of this man.

Excellent Book!Review Date: 2008-02-14
The strength of Aldrich's argument comes out in his incisive analysis of variations across facility types and political contexts. The detailed studies of airports, dams, and nuclear reactors show that different facilities engender different political dynamics. Moreover, by comparing the politics of nuclear power in France and Japan, he shows how weak resistance in France led to a reliance on coercion, while strong resistance in Japan caused the state to expand its skill set.
This book does many things well. It is methodologically sophisticated without being esoteric. Its lucid presentation and effective use of interpretative graphs makes the results readily understandable to greenest undergraduate, while its theoretical sophistication will make even the most jaded scholar wish they had written it. This is an ambitious book engaging many literatures and scholars ranging from Japanese politics to social movements to social and political theory and will be fruitfully used in courses from introductory undergraduate courses to advanced graduate seminars. With the dramatic rise of energy use and transportation infrastructure, the problems surrounding divisive facilities will only increase in the future and there is no better place to start than this welcome addition. I look forward to Aldrich's next book.

This book is a collection of 101 short chapters, grouped by theme. Each chapter starts with a brief Scripture passage and ends with a few questions to ponder. Theses chapters are like potato chips - I dare you to read just one! Even though it would be fun to just keep reading a whole bunch of these stories at one time, I encourage you to take the time and savor each chapter. For there are profound things to think about in each one.
Sandra P. Aldrich (read the book to find out why she always includes her maiden name in her byline) is the type of woman that all younger women should have as a mentor. Two few young moms these days have a godly older women to turn to for encouragement and getting that all-important perspective of being able to look back and say what REALLY matters as we're raising small children.
Sandra's book will make you laugh, and cry and will hopefully help you to look at life with a fresh enthusiasm and grateful spirit. The author points us to Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith.
This book would make a WONDERFUL gift for women of all ages, but especially for young moms in the midst of raising their children.
