This book is for anyone facing a physical challenge or disability - even a temporary one. Written in clear, concise terms, this book is great for parents, care-givers, grands, aunts, uncles, and all close family of children who face disability. Each chapter deals with a challenge and then has little stories of young people coping well with and through the challenge. Could be read to young children, too, but is written on the average newspaper level. Written from the person with the disability's point-of-view. Great companion book to Ratto's second book COPING WITH A PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED BROTHER OR SISTER. Both are super for the whole family - even the members of your medical team. Hardcover - excellent buy, written by a parent of two children with disabilities who is an educator.

This book literally changed our lives! It gave us an insight into our 13 year old son, which we would have never have been able to arrive at alone. I purchased 4 books on this subject and read them all. The other three were pretty much psycho babble....stating the obvious and not offering any real solutions. While this book doesn't promise any quick fixes, it does give you some tools, suggestions and, most of all, support. It feels so good to know that your kid isn't the only one. That they aren't underachieving because they are lazy or just don't care. Now, I see that it's just not that simple. It give you a different perspective, from which to see your child and changes your approach on how to deal with issues....especially when you are a Type A overachieving Mom. Parents, arm yourself with the insights that this book brings. You will be a better advocate for your child as you deal with teachers and administrators.

Ms. Fosburgh,
Hello from Voyager Middle School! I'm not sure if you'll even remember me, but my name is Michael Clark, and I am the band and orchestra director at Voyager. Your daughter Chelsey was one of my very first students when I started my teaching career. I'm on year eight and still loving every second of it!
Arley, at the end of that first year, you gave me a copy of "A Cow! And Other Poems," and that book to this day remains on my bookshelf next to my computer. After I read your book, I decided I needed to know more about Autism, so that I could better serve the kids who come through my doors. I have taken several classes on autism and Asbergers, and I have taught several students in these past eight years who see the world through these eyes, and I have learned as much from them as I have taught them...
I just wanted to say thank you (even if it is eight years too late!). Thank you for reaching out to a teacher who was just starting out, and thank you for an advocate for your son and all kids with autism. You are an awesome family, and I wish you guys all the best!
Have a Great Summer,
-Michael Clark

A friend of mine who knew this family gave me this book. I couldn't put it down. This is one of the most inspirational books on the subject of a special child that I've ever read. Roberta's daily walk with God for almost thirty years revealed the blessings her son gave to her life. It showed how a boy who couldn't even talk and had to be fed and cared for daily could give more love, kindness, innocence and laughter than the outside world could ever provide. I have a much better appreciation of what families with special children struggle with, yet, if they rely on God for help, will reap the many blessings. God bless this family!
