ADD in the Classroom, a teachers perspective

I was extremely excited when a teacher collegue of mine introduced me to this book. I have had many ADD and ADHD children in my class and have always struggled with them. I read this book with much enthusiasm looking for help all the way. I realized that my behavior towards these children was hindering them from growing, I have learned I need to be a better communicator with the parents and child about my expectation and set up a program that will help the child to meet our goals. Most importantly I have learned I need to be CALM with these children and model the behavior I expect from them. I have learned so much from this book. I look forward to trying these techniques in my classroom next year.

Parents of children with attention and behavioral disorders will find Wild Child an excellent guide to helping a child, from building an understanding of such disorders to handling problems with family members and helping kids take control of their lives. Checklists, charts and keys to understanding make for an excellent self-help guide.

Case Callahan isn't a star or champion like others in his talented family - in fact, he's not really good at anything in particular. That's why he becomes determined to try out for activities in which he might excel, facing repeated failures until his friendship with a lost dog gains him some degree of fame. Thomas F. Yezerski's drawings provide excellent embellishment to a fun tale.

Heartwarming story for all ages

Nancy Ruth Patterson is a wonderful children's author, and her newest release, The Winner's Walk, is my favorite so far. It is a story that teaches the importance of individuality and self-worth, with a heart-warming story of loving animals and friendship. If you are looking for a gift that encourages a child to not give up in the face of setbacks, to care about family, animals and people, and to learn about service dogs and their importance in many lives, this is the book to give to all on your list.

An important, brilliant, welcome voice. Please write more!

I'm on my third read through these stories since receiving it as a gift in the year of it's publication -- 1996. This is, however, the first time I've read the Kirkus review and I am VERY annoyed by it's condescending tone. I'm reading it again to find the me I locate when I read her stories. Williams' book is unique, as all great books are, and simultaneously reminds me in style, tone, manner of address, of certain other writers, eg. Grace Paley, Chekov, Borges, Flannery O'Connor, Saroyan. . . . The voice of the outsider living among outsiders whose outsiderness unites them (more or less) but excludes the writer as much as the "normal" (or "normative") world does. The social worker who "meant" to be a writer, the not-quite-well and healthy person who works with the "officially" handicapped, the atheist with all the impulses of one of the faithful, the "liberal" acutely attuned to the narrownesses that oppress, including her own narrowness. The griever who cannot stop laughing. . . . I long for another book from this writer.

An Amazing, mind-opening book!

This book is beautifully written, very funny at times, very poignant at others. It is mind-expanding and perspective-challenging. It's hard for me to imagine that it's fiction because it feels so real, so I decided to believe it as nonfiction. It's the best collection of short stories I've ever read -- it has a wonderful life-affirming quality behind the sometimes sad circumstances it covers. Highly recommended!!!

In searching for a way to work with a child in the autism spectrum, I stumbled on this book, and was immediately drawn to it, since I have done yoga myself. After reviewing the book online, I tried this with a group of autistic students. They immediately loved the simplified/adapted movements, poses and breathing exercises.
I would recommend this to a parent/teacher or therapist who is working with autistic children/teens.

Pretty good book

My brother has autism. We all try yoga together. He a little slower at it, but my mom says it relaxes him. I'd like to meet the kid in the book. He looks like he is about my age. I think you would like the book. It has a lot of pictures.

Goodbye,

Jason

Must read for parents of "special" children

I read this book as my husband and I battled our school district for services for our autistic son. I recommend it to all parents I meet now. It not only tells you what the schools can and can't do, it also tells you how to get and hold their attention and gives samples of letters, etc. For example, any meetings we now hold with school representatives also have a 3rd party witness - a hint gleaned from this book. If you are a parent buying this book to get services for your child, it will help. I wish you luck!!

Barbara Coyne Cutler is an amazing woman who fought for her son's right to a free, appropriate education for 10 yrs. before being heard. Not only did she fight for her son, she has fought for many other children herself and through her book. I read this book before an IEP meeting and it made all the difference in the world. This is an excellent, easily understood book.

First book my dyslexic 11-year old son has read by himself

My son and I have read the first 3 books in the Hank Zipzer series together. We enjoyed each one, especially the underlying theme of hope for children who learn differently. This fourth book, was the turning point where my son actually is reading the book alone. If I could contact Mr. Winkler I would like to thank him for being such a great role model for kids who are bright and creative but have difficulties in areas that the rest of us take for granted. The print is large and the vocabulary is not overwhelming yet the stories are fun and meaningful for the tween age group. We can't wait for the 5th book to come out in May 2004.

Entertaining and my son wants to read more

My son enjoys the entire Hank Zipzer series. He struggles with learning disabilities as Hank does, and enjoys the creative ways that Hank tries to get around them. My son also admires Hank's sense of humor and his loyal friends, Frankie and Ashley. And who wouldn't want a grandpa like Papa Pete?

Most people (lucky for them) have no experience with pituitary tumors. In fact, even many people who have pituitary tunors go to their graves (from other causes) without ever knowing that they had them. Almost half of these tumors are now discovered as "incidental findings" when a patient is given a CT or MRI scan for some other reason. Once you have the diagnosis howver, you really need some guidance as to your options. This book will help you find that guidance and help inform your opinion about an area that the average family doc is not very fluent in.

I have been hunting for an inexpensive guidebook to use with my methods and materials in special education class. I have students teaching everything from pre-k through 22 year olds covering every topic from life skills, to traditional academics, to art. This means that a traditional textbook doesn't do me much good. However the others I looked at were too general to help. Then I found Accessing. Just reading made me exclaim in agreement. I like the format, the content and language used. So far my students have given it a thumbs up too- both for price, size and content.
