This is a beautiful book about a boy's determination to overcome not only his handicap but that of a donkey. Children need and benefit from books like this which require thought and tells a message of "I know I can..." There's magic in knowing, "We can be different and succeed." I am sharing this book with my grandchildren. Great job Lyn!

This is a wonderful story about a grandfather, grandson relationship and the faith one young boy had in a disadvantaged donkey. Being familiar with the Cripple Creek area and the donkeys, you did a fantastic job Lyn. I am thrilled to share this with my grandchildren.

A well written story of a young boy's faith and determination. It will hold the interest of young children and affirm their feelings of 'I think I can...'. Additionally, Ms. Bezek's descriptions of Cripple Creek conjured up magical visions of earlier times I spent in the area and made me a bit nostalgic. Thank you, Lyn! I loved this book and will be sharing it with all of my young friends.

Daisy The Cripple Creek Donkey is author Lyn Bezek's debut children's book and introduces young readers to a young boy who learns that a local donkey suffers from a similar handicap to his own - both have weak legs that prevent them from moving quickly, under most circumstances. But the boy is determined to show people just what his new friend can do, entering her in "Donky Derby Days", a special kind of race that no one else thinks they have a shot at winning. A whimsical and touching story, brief in length yet complex enough to challenge the reading skills of young children who are ready to move on from picture books to more involved tales.

It is difficult to believe that I would be the first to sing the praise of Ms. Featherstone's book on Amazon. This is a MUST READ for professionals going into the field of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the families who love them. As a sibling of a man with Down Syndrome I couldn't have written a better book myself. And as a Adult Sibling Selfhelp Support Group Facilitator I couldn't recommed a better book to my fellow siblings.

A wonderful source of support!

Although I have been aware of my daughter's disability for years, I found Ms. Featherstone's book to be a source of support and understanding which I couldn't find elsewhere. This book covers a wide range of disabilities from physical, to mental, to emotional handicaps and gives first-hand accounts from people who have various relationships with the disabled. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a niche in the world as a relative to a someone with a disability.

I discovered this book shortly after my daughter was born with a severe orthopedic birth defect, and it helped me a great deal to cope during those early months. Just reading other families' stories--and seeing that there are many ways for children to develop and be loved--was a genuine inspiration. The author's special vantagepoint, as both the mother of a disabled child and a specialist in child development, lends both sensitivity and objectivity to the writing. If you "don't know what to say" to a friend or relative who is facing this crisis, let this book do the communicating...

Parents are in important resource in the filed of Autism. Many Parents of children with Autism are the first to notice that something is different about their children, but are often ignored or made to feel like they are stupid, inexperienced or overreacting. This book provides parents and professionals with a solid manner to detect abnormalities before the age of one. I firmly believe that this can lead to a better means of communication between Doctors,Researchers and Parents. Accomplishing such a collaboration is a large step toward understanding Autism. Anyone who has a child with Autism, works in the field or would like to know more about Autism should own this book!!!!

An excellent concise read for parents of typical and autistic babies alike

Review Date: 2008-07-28
This new model for early diagnosis probably won't go mainstream until the research also includes numbers for babies who display early motor issues but *don't* go on to develop autism. In the meantime, however, it provides very valuable insight into how complex skills such as righting, crawling etc can be further broken down into sequential actions. Certainly the findings reported in this book could create an avalanche of inquiries at pediatric offices but at least in our case, we are very much reassured by better understanding how motor skills are developed normally as contrasted to abnormal/impaired development. Given how easily the information can be digested, it should probably be a mainstay of the pediatric office... either in book form or as short educational video clips looped on a flat panel. If nothing else, it will give the average person a better appreciation of why autistic children are developmentally delayed and perhaps help foster a culture of acceptance.

This book is a "must read" for health care professionals, other persons who work with infants and parents of infants, and parents who are concerned about their baby's motor development. The authors offer motor development clues gleaned from videotapes of children diagnosed with autism to help parents and others identify possible early autism in infants. Delightfully drawn graphic illustrations enhance the easily understood narrative. The authors identify numerous autism information and therapy resources.

A new system for detecting the earliest signs of autism - in a baby

This new system for detecting the earliest signs of autism - in a baby - offers a brand new theory and comes from a husband/wife team who have worked for nearly two decades to develop ways of detecting signs of potential autism in a child. By expanding patterns of sitting, crawling and walking and comparing them with those of children later definitively diagnosed, they present both general information about autism's causes and progression and a survey of tests the parents can easily conduct to help define and identify early autism onset with respect to their children.

Don't put it all on your therapist to teach your child. Take it into your own hands...it is your child. This book is great for your child of any age. It is really good for someone who has a little one because it talks about oral motor issues that could delay the speech and how to work on them. Libby is the Speech guru in the Down syndrome world...but you may have already know that.

With a focus on speech and language development, through the stage of making 3-word phrases, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down syndrome offers in-depth insight, home communication activities, ways to help one's child learn basic rules of conduct, and much more. Bought for use in a parent-infant education program for children infant to 3. Written with parents in mind so that it is not full of medical-speak, and full of suggestions, this is a good book for anyone working with or parenting a child with low tone or multiple issues that interfere with language development.

I wish I had time to read the whole thing at once, it's full of helpful info. I recommend it to anyone working with or parenting a child with down syndrome. Something that is partcularly nice about it as well as the other books like it is that they don't talk in ages but in stages. This way you can follow your child, and not some outward source that determines what they should be doing and when.

Review Date: 2008-07-26
Dr. Ball's book is one that I suggest to parents when I first have to let them know that their child has autism or is in the autism spectrum. He has made it very user friendly, by having us walk along with a young couple as they learn to travel the maze of emotions, interventions, and myths that can be encountered on the journey.

He spends a great deal of time looking at the differences in emotional and practical reactions of each parent. I find this important because mothers' and fathers' do perceive, process, and develop conclusions and plans differently. He aptly shows the Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus differences in the sexes, which is not a negative but a reality of wiring over evolution. Each parent needs to understand where the other one is coming from so that there are not added stressers to the family dynamics and marriage.

Whoever first lets a family know about their child's diagnosis should also let them know about this resource for emotional and practical guidance.

Even though my son is 6, this book is "spot on" on helping me and him. Thank You Dr. Jim.

This book has SO much great information! It addresses the emotions parents go through and gives you the info to move forward. Now when therapists are talking about EI strategies, I understand what they are talking about. The Day in the Life part is so cool! It gives you ideas about what little things you can do during the day to help your child and which theory/strategy the idea stems from.

technical." It is a "must-read" for parents of newly diagnosed children. I
wish I would have had a compilation of information such as this to guide

She wants to know if she can succeed with ADD, she is yearning for information that will help her understand herself, I think she is saddened and feels lonely and truly tries to do what she is supposed to....The First Star I see is a wonderful believable story about a 4th grade girl who always feels like she is behind the 8-ball...she finds someone who cares enough to show her that she has attention deficit and in finding out she starts to accept herself through understanding. It describes being teased, forgetting homework, missing details.....humorous story line, emotional and best of all relatable....Good starter book that is loaded with information about ADD/ADHD but presented in fiction form! This was one of the first books I read about ADHD, some years ago. And now when I think back to it, I see that it laid a very good and accurate foundation for understanding the "heart" of ADHD challenges. And, it did so in an entertaining and inspiring way--not at all pedantic or "now we're going to learn about your brain wiring" preachy. If I had a child with ADHD, especially a lttle girl, I would definitely make this bedtime reading.

Humorous tale of a girl with AD/HD
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-01
This book would be good a for girl with AD/HD. She could identify with the successes and the mishaps of a character who shares some of her characteristics. Since girls with AD/HD often feel isolated and "defective," this book could her realize that she is not the only person in the world like this. She may see that one can succeed with AD/HD, and that one doesn't have to be the perfect student to be a successful person.

Paige daydreams during class, so much in fact, that her classmates call her "spacey." Her class is having a competition to see who can write the best paper on a particular topic. Paige is absent-minded, so she forgets about her paper until it becomes an urgent priority. Paige's dog provides distraction for her when she least wants it. The dog is stealing toys from children and animals. Despite all of these challenging events, Paige ends up getting at least part of what she wanted.

This book would be a good addition to the library of a child with AD/HD. It is a bit more of a "teaching" book than simply an entertainment book. However, some of Paige's situations are funny and keep the plot moving.

The story was mainly told in the forest. The main characters in the story was Franklin. The minor characters were bear, rabbit, fox beaver skunk. The theme was that this book would be that school is alot of fun and don't be afraid to go there. School is a good learning experience. The style would be that the author has a picture on every page and it has friends playing and having fun on every page.

Our 5 yr old loves the entire series. She reads them aloud.

I've actually reviewed this book for a journal and now have the chance to do so online. This book is a must read for ALL Professionals that are in the lives of children with special needs! The message that the Moms in this book want every single professional to hear and see is -- LISTEN TO US! WE KNOW OUR CHILDREN BETTER THAN ANYONE! As a parent myself of a child with special needs, I know exactly what the moms are saying. We do NOT want to work against the professionals, we want to work with them! Such a simple, yet complicated message to convey!

If you are a parent with a child with special needs, read this book so that you know you are not alone when you feel you've been treated poorly. If you are a professional, read this book with your eyes and mind wide open. The message is extremely important and it can make a very positive difference in the life of a child!
