Healthy Work is a classic--though currently under-appreciated--work on organizations. It is a book of great breadth and richness that deserves more than one reading. Healthy Work is a "must read" for those concerned with creating healthy organizations. It describes the demand-control model, which has had a huge influence on research on work and health. The model was prompted by Karasek's concern about the consequences of demand-control imbalances in the workplace. Karasek and Theorell provide a vision of humane organizations in which employees can master challenges and experience personal growth. Healthy Work is not an easy read, but it is a "must read" for OD practitioners, OB professors, and those concerned with improving life in organizations. It challenges us to improve the "psychic prisons" in which many employees--unfortunately--spend much of their waking hours.

I bought this book believing that i'll find information about from where H2S come, how it change through time, How it can be monitoring through time, but these questions are not answered. Instead of that you'll find a good book about how handle well oerations with h2s present. Yes, it's said on the title but maybe a little theory for people who work as Petroleum engineer trying to monitoring H2S could be interesting because there aren't book about that. I recommend this book for Operational engineers.

Risk communication is more than listening to the experts.

Risk communication used to mean one way messages from experts to non-experts. But today's issues are not only technically complex, they are politically charged. Experts are often seen as advocates for a particular position, eroding credibility. There is a better way. This book is the result of the National Research Council's report on "Risk Assessment in the Federal Government: Managing the Process."

Bit hard to judge veracity ... but seems a lifesaver!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-12
It is a bit hard to rate this book, since I have no expert knowledge as to its veracity or not, and that is really the crux of this book. The advice sounds true, but I don't know for sure ... do any of us? (Remember 'Duck and Cover'?) I would recommend that most every American who lives and/or works in a likely target (e.g. any large-sized metropolitan city) read what this book says, though, and commit it to memory. This is one of those books that, having read free online (Rand makes it available online free at http://www.rand.org/publications/MR/MR1731/), I am going to also purchase, mostly for the reference card available at the end. As someone who spends 8-10 hours per day in the nation's second largest major metropolitan center (Chicago), I would rather have this information handy in card form should the worst ever happen. Call me paranoid, but I'd rather have it and not need it, rather than needing it and not having it ...

No mention of fragranced products.

Review Date: 1999-05-13
While Dr. Godish's book is informative and well-written, he does not mention the contribution to indoor air pollution made by the plethora of fragranced products worn by building occupants. Some of these products contain over 100 different chemicals, formulated to be long-lasting. Perfume is an acknowledged trigger for migraine headaches and asthma in some individuals, and should be included in any evaluation of indoor air quality.

One of several very good IAQ primers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-17
The function of an IAQ primer is to give a reader a sense of the field, without losing any of the depth of the various topic areas. This book does that. Only reason that it does not rate a 5 star rating is that it is now 12 years old, and some of the data is now, well, dated.
The contributors include a few of the current well-respected researchers (besides the editiors Samet and Spengler) including Harriet Burge in Chapter 12 (Indoor Air Pollution and Infectious Diseases) and Bill Cain in Chapter 6(Environmental Tobacco Smoke).
This is still a valuable basic text that helps to give one a nice overview of the complexities of indoor air quality investigation, without as I mentioned above, sacrificing the detail.

Solid planning document
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-23
Although the title indicates that this book is designed for the industrial arena, I found it just as applicable to healthcare organizations as well. It is easy to follow, provides excellent checklists and descriptions and very good explanations. In addition, it provides other resources to use for emergency planning. The terminology fits virtually all businesses, even though the term "plant" is used throughout. It has become the basis for the rewrite of the emergency managemement plan at my hospital. Of the many books I've reviewed, this stands at the top on emergency planning.
