I came across this book a couple of years ago. It is an excellent resource for improving a child's awareness towards becoming independently secure as much as possible. As Dr. Kraizer notes in this book, the only person a child can rely on ALL the time is him- or herself. The very practical method prescribed by Dr. Kraizer helps a child become more aware of potential dangers without alarming them. I highly recommend this book for any parent or teacher.

Every parent should have this book!!!!

I am a social worker and am always looking for ways to help kids learn how to keep themselves safe when safe adults are not available. This book gives great tips on how to teach kids how to do just that. Parents aren't always able to be there and this book gives kids tools they need to be able to rely on themselves if/when needed. I have read this book several times since receiving it and have used the methods with my own 4 year old child as well as the foster kids I work with. The book is able to be used with kids as young as 2 on up....great book with very practical and life saving advice.

This is a great book to read. It is helpful to understand the problem that parents cause by sending conflicting signals to children. It also gives practical advice in how to teach your children to speak to stranges and others to avoid sexual abuse or abduction. It teaches you the ideas and concepts you need to better equip your children with the skills they need. Very helpful.

Great Reference - Touches on Scores of Topis

This is a great reference book. It is not meant to be read from cover-to-cover, rather each page addresses a topic (eg: encountering a strange dog, swinging, riding the bus, calling 911, request from an adult, just about any situation a child might encounter). It provides a scenario - and you can ask your child what s/he should do, and then turn the page for bullent-points to discuss with your child. When I purchased this book, I thought it might be too old for my oldest (4.5), but in fact she enjoys going thru the various topics.

A Wonderful Resource for Young Children

We went through this book by reading aloud one topic each day. I love the format : each topic presents a safety hazzard; you brainstorm with the children for responses to the danger; then, by turning the page, the appropriate responses are revealed. My young children were really encouraged when they discovered that some of their reponses were right! Note : my 7yo liked the book so much that she read it through by herself after our first reading.

Every parent and young child should share this book.

This is a very good book to discuss many safty concerns without the lecture style that kids usually tune out. I feel much more secure about my children's safty since we went through this book togeher. One liked it so much that we went through it twice. The book is divided into seven chapters: At Home, At School and on the Way, At play, Out and About, First Aid, Just for Fun, and Pages for Parents. Each chapter has 12 to 15 sections which cover a specific issue such as "How to Dial 911". The section has one page that has an illustration and a one paragraph description of a situation. Read the paragraph and ask the child what they would do. The child then responds. This is a great way to get to know your child's maturity level, reasoning skills, and common sence. On the second page of the section there is a good discussion of the ideal response to the situation posed on the preceding page. My five year old had no trouble comprehending this and my 11 year old also seemed to be learning some things. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: My five year old didn't sleep well after we did the section titled "Prowler". She had just never thought of such a thing before and it seemed to unnerve her. Also, I liked the common sence response in the "Gun in the House" section. No hysterical political B.S., just leave the area and tell an adult.

This is a huge paperback book. It's not the kind of book you can sit down and read all in one sitting. What I do it take it a bit at a time with my kids and we role play what we are reading. It's got cute illustrations and good information. Parents will need to adjust some of it for their child's specific situation. It is a comprehensive and well rounded book.

I bought a book back in 1992. Used it for travels to Asia and Afrika. Handy size can always fit your backpack, no matter how light you must pack. I used it for rough trips, as well as for trips around Europe with kids. The book covers all essential aspects that you will need for your travel: (i) which vaccinations to take before you go and what to pack, (ii) what precautions to take to stay fit and healthy, (iii) what to do in case you get sick and (iv) what is the bottom line when you really need to stop being your own doctor and need to find a physician. The book is well structured and you find in a second the topic you are looking for. I strongly recomend the book to travelers who are serious about staying healthy.

I found this book to be very informative. It showed the vaccines that you should get but not only that. It told about the bugs and "creepy crawlies" that you should stay away from in your particular country you are going to. It told of the plants that are poisonous and to stay away from there water unless you have a purifier. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is goind to a third world country!

The best "carry with you" travel health book out there.

I have travelled and lived all over the world and I always have this book with me. Not only does it cover how to protect yourself, but if you do get sick it helps you to get better. I love that it includes different drugs for you to take for different bugs, and it tells you the exact dosage. This comes in handy when you are living in the bush in Africa, no doctor for hundreds of miles, but a well stocked pharmacy near by. I HIGLY recomend this book or anyone planning to travel or live overseas.

This book should be offered to injured workers after their first visit with an attorney who will represent them. It should also be among those on the "required reading" lists in every law school, where attorneys may enter the Workers Compensation practice. The accuracy of descriptions for various categories, (ie. Chronic Pain, etc.), are extraordinary. For the first time in the eight years that I have been dealing with the system, I was able to read what amounted to an all encompassing, yet clear and accurate description of my own dillemma. Truly an excellent book.

Practical and invaluable for the professional.

In today's world of workers' comp fraud, denials, and dilemmas, Strategies is a welcome resource for the professional. Indeed, from its historical review to methodologies to anecdotes, this work is definitely a must-read textbook. While Dr. Sall's writing style makes the book and quick and easy read, even for the beginner, the book's most important attribute is its real world--practical--relevance.

I appreciate the feedback for my book. It was a difficult subject to cover in the allotted space, but I tried to give airline passengers the information they need to feel comfortable with air travel. What resulted from my efforts was the perfect book for infrequent air travelers, and business travelers alike.

Did you know that the majority of air passengers survive accidents only to die in the aftermath? I give you clues on how to survive.

The Administration and TSA are telling you to be 'alert' for possible terrorist activity. But how many of you appreciate that you are the last line of defense when a terrorist situation exists? What will you do?

Again, I give you tips on how to overcome terrorists.

There is a wealth of information in my book that you will find both interesting and practical. If you have any further comments, or would like to read more of my work, please check out my website at http://kcubbin.tripod.com

Thank you, Ken Cubbin

Mr Cubbin's book is excellent to understand a little bit more how security works in an airport, and how to defend yourself without the aid of any object against somebody.

However, I think that he shouldn't have included so much things about martial arts... it's good for him to say it's recommended to practice one, but he kept coming back to martial arts on every page! Also, this books has a lot of spelling and typing mistakes, and has about 20 pages only with airplane floorplans (and some are wrong! Exapmle: an Airbus A310 has the floorplan of an A320 and that sort of mistakes).

A good try, but needs to be perfectioned.

Best defense is a good offensive

Ken Cubbin covers material that is taboo to talk about at the airport and on the aircraft. Nevertheless, the advice and guidance within are entirely appropriate even before the terrorist attack of Sept 11 2001.

To bolster our defenses against terrorist and highjackers, Cubbin discusses self-defense holds and grabs that ANYONE can perform. Many of the holds and maneuvers are illustrated.

Additionally, you will find material suitable for how to increase your chances of surviving a crash or fire. One concern that is dealt with is water ditching, which is interesting, because the text notes that there have been no water ditching of commercial aircraft since World War II. Every scenario is covered here.

If you travel by air, read this book, if you love your family, have them read this book!

FANTASTIC READ !!

What a fantastic read !! The perfect handbook for self defence on aircraft. I assumed this book would be an instruction manual for how to act in case of terrorism in flight, the atypical passive instruction guide on how to come out of a nasty situation alive. Little did I realize that I was about to learn not only how to react, but how to prevent the possibility of terrorism, hijaking and how to increase my chances of surivival in the event of a crash.

I particularly liked the information on how to defend myself in a small space. The diagrams prove that even if you are small framed, like myself, there are numerous maneverus one can use to disarm a criminal in a second. This information is vital, not only for aircraft, but for everyday life. The author has done his research and this book cites several reasons why group attacks on villans are essential to saving lives. A concept not many travellers think about when boarding an aircraft.

This book takes you to the next level of travel. It has covered all aspects of safety, insider tips for comfortable travel and detailed instructions on self defence. The reader is truly equipped with all the knowledge he needs after reading this book !!

A Comprehensive Guide to Keeping Yourself and Your Family Safe.

This book is one that every parent should read regarding the steps that we should take to keep ourselves and family members safe from the predators that converge on us from every direction. It offers insightful data and current statistics coupled with real time solutions that you can implement in your lives right away. The book is organized into sections that range from protecting infants to protecting older adults and financial resources. It does not scare you into making rash, paranoid decisions. It presents the facts, statistics, resolution and precautions to take to prevent you from becoming a victim of various crimes.

You receive an abundance of safety precautions for parents, women and the elderly. You learn about increasing safety at work. You learn about preventing fraud and also about the various scams that enter our homes via cyberspace or by way of a knock on the door by a home repair person. I tried to think of the most unusual crimes and yes - the answers were found in the pages of Think Safe: Practical Measures to Increase Security at Home, at Work, and Throughout Life.

I compare this book to the self-care medical books that many of us rely on to determine if we need professional medical attention. You simply check the index or table of contents for the situation that you wish to research, turn to the appropriate page and begin resolving and preventing various crimes. It is in no way an answer to all problems, but if we heed the advice that is given, we can prevent many unfortunate events that affect our lives and our wallets.

The Author James McGrew has been a law enforcement officer and is the president and CEO of an investigative and security consulting firm located in San Jose. He has more than 30 years experience in planning, implementing and managing security programs in private and public sectors. He is the recipient of a Masters degree in Administration of Justice from San Jose is a Certified Protection Professional, Certified Fraud examiner and a licensed Private Investigator. In summary, he knows what he is talking about and he is serous about keeping you and your family safe.

"Be cautious of free offers either by mail or telephone." ~James McGrew

Why should you reconsider publicly announcing the birth of a new child?
What are the main concerns during parenting and what should you tell your children?
What are the main danger signals of suicide?
How can you protect your children from online predators?
What are the main things you can do to increase your home security?
How can you break cycles of violence?
What should you do and not do to de-escalate potentially violent situations?

In a world where checking your e-mail is not even a safe activity, predators lurk in expected and unexpected places. Did you really just win a lottery or are you about to enter into a scam spread in the form of greed-inducing spam?

Personal security and safety expert James McGrew has written a comprehensive crime prevention manual for our time. He presents startling statements like:

"Reports show that one in three women in the United States is abused."

James McGrew takes on a long list of challenges including school violence, Suicide Intervention, psychological abuse, domestic violence, sexual harassment, common scams, investment fraud, telemarketing travel scams, door-to-door salespeople, workplace violence, pyramid schemes, financial exploitation, identity theft, elder abuse and personal attacks.

If you have been alive for almost forty years, you have probably experienced a number of the issues in this book. Even as a person who has led a relatively safe life, I could relate to page after page.

This book should be given to anyone leaving home for the first time. No one taught me this information when I left home. Every parent should read this book and talk to children about how to stay safe on this volatile and often dangerous planet.

Sunpiper Gives "Think Safe" a two thumbs up!

Since September 11, 2001, the security of Americans has been at the forefront of our social agenda. America has learned that the "that would never happen to me" or "no one would ever do that" mentality can easily be manipulated, causing thousands to die merely because "we weren't paying close attention".

Because of the freedoms afforded by our country, Americans have never been truly 100% safe. Even in the 'good ole days', Americans were vulnerable to attack. Social deviants like John Wilkes Boothe, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Wayne Gacy, James Earl Ray and Ted Bundy have always plagued America. During these times, security techniques were far less advanced as those of the 21st century. If the scientific advances of today had been accessible, some of the aforementioned deviants could have been stopped. Time and technology has produced scientifically advanced investigators, however, they have also created highly technically advanced criminals.

Think Safe's author, James M. McGrew, has spent 30 years planning, implementing and managing security programs in both the public and private sectors. His book, Think Safe; Practical Measures to Increase Security at Home, at Work and Throughout Life is an excellent reference guide to personal protection. Think Safe gives valuable advice that everyone can use from the nursery to nursing care. With the rise of kidnapping and school violence, Think Safe features questions you should ask hospitals, childcare centers, babysitters and schools regarding their safety procedures. Think Safe also identifies warning signs parents should look for when children may be depressed, suicidal or being lured by sexual predators over the internet. Think Safe features statistics and strategies for women, empowering them against rape and domestic violence. Furthermore, Think Safe focuses on financial exploitation, workplace violence, sexual harassment, identity theft and home safety.

"James McGrew, CPP, CFE is president and CEO of a full-service investigative and security consulting firm. His techniques stress the value and implementation of risk assessment and prevention. His pro-active management programs have successfully addressed violence in the workplace, travel safety, emergency action and contingency plans and other vital security issues".

If, indeed, Knowledge is Power, this is THE MOST powerful book I have read regarding personal and family safety. There is not one American that could not benefit from the valuable knowledge and information in this book. Each chapter of this book takes the reader closer to a safe and secure lifestyle and away from becoming another statistic. Think Safe definitely gains Sunpiper's seal of approval and I highly recommend this book.

Think Safe

Review Date: 2007-07-16
Think Safe: Practical Measures to Increase Security at Home, at Work, and Throughout Life takes a very detailed look at common dangers both within our homes and while participating in the outside world. The author states various surprising and not so surprising facts and figures showing the most common dangers at every stage of one's life. These statistics show that certain ages are far more likely to experience certain types of victimization. For instance, some forms of sexual abuse (like forcible sodomy) are far likely to occur to preschool aged children while teenagers are more likely to be victims of other types of such abuse (like forcible rape). Similarly, some forms of physical and financial victimization (such as caregiver abuse, extortion, consumer theft) are far more prevalent in the elderly population than in the rest of the overall population.

Not only does this book detail high risk groups for various forms of victimization but also discusses things that you as a parent, caregiver, or member of a high risk group can do to protect yourself and others from such dire circumstances. All of the advice given is easy to do, realistic, and will help the reader protect him or herself and his or her loved ones from suffering from potential victimization or to seek help before he of she becomes the victimizer. Thus, this is an important book for everyone to read.

If you are a typical busy executive (or non-executive and travelling more than a couple of times a month, this is a must. Dr McGannon uses the story of how one executive manages to survive a heart attack on a business trip in the far east to tell in an engaging and humorous way how you can improve your fitness and physical stamina without missing out on the fun side of life. He shows how you can change your diet to be more healthy and still manage to attend all of those important business dinners. He shows how you do not have to travel with a huge exercise kit if you want to keep fit on the road. (Actually the average hotel room has all you need and it does not take a lot of time.) Most importantly he shows how all of these can be integrated into a good lifestyle which does not prevent you from following that punishing schedule that you have to keep. After reading it I lost over 10Kg, significantly lowered my blood pressure and improved my fitness. I have bought lots of copies of this for the folks that I work with. Inturn, they have all bought copies for their own staff.

Terrific, Useful Guide - Highly Recommended!

Dr. McGannon uses a unique format (the book is written like a novel) to illustrate a number of ways to improve personal fitness and quality of life (e.g. nutrition, exercise, focus, confidence). I met Michael recently at INSEAD in France, where he is based, and found him incredibly inspiring, yet with a down to earth and practical tool. The keys are in lowering body fat, "bad cholesterol", blood pressure, and he gives excellent guides in the book, which is an easy read. A great book

As one who normally avoids "self-help" books, the title amused me enough to pick this book up from the sale bin - despite not being a business-jock. Expecting yet another business adaptation of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" or Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings" I was relieved to find a wealth of useful information on all aspects of health (mind, body & spirit). And best of all, from a medical doctor (not some self-styled health guru with the latest fad).

This has become my "bible" of the best medically sound advice to (getting &) staying fit, healthy and sane. It's all here : human psysiology and how nutrition works, fitness advice: from hotel circuits to yoga and stress-coping techniques(effective worrying!).

Armed with this knowledge about yourself, the next medical check-up you go for should be the most cost-effective you've ever had!

What a GREAT book! For those like myself and my wife, who have long ago eclipsed Jack Benny's 39 years, and who are also handicapped, staying safe in a violent world is not easy. Martial arts? Try them with Degenerative Joint Disease. We knew there had to be a better, easier way for those of us long past our prime "fighting years". As a volunteer personal safety instructor, I read, watch videos and attend as many seminars and programs as possible, always looking for ways to keep ourselves, and others, safe.
"Waking the Tiger Within" by Scott Flint has to be one of the best sources of staying safe to come along in some time. The book covers not only the number one ingredient of safety, ie awareness, but guides the reader into developing "Your natural built-in instinct to survive". His chapter, "Stop Button" is exactly what we have searched for: ending "an attack in one second." (No gun, pepper spray or Black Belt needed.) Worth the price of the book by itself.

Got kids or grandchildren? Worried about bullies? His chapters on these subjects are excellent.
Road Rage? Car-Jacking? (What would YOU do, if locked in the trunk of your car by an assailant?)
Many of the areas Scott writes about are covered in the seminars I present, but this book opens up a host of new, and surprisingly simple, techniques that almost anyone, at any age, in any state of health, can grasp and use.
Chapter One begins with these words: "No one ever has the right to hurt you." When you have finished reading and following the simple advice presented in these pages, you will be a long way toward the realization of that goal.
Buy this book for yourself and give copies to those you love.

"What a great book! Just finished the first reading last night. I am an NRA Certified Instructor in the Refuse To Be A Victim(r) Program, and of course many of the things mentioned are included in our seminars. A number of other items brought up will be finding their way into future seminars I'll be conducting. Thanks for a super job."

A must read for everyone!

Scott Flint is an accomplished martial artist and self defense trainer. In this book he will teach you ways to increase your awareness, methods to develop your instinctual fighting ability and techniques to keep you safe wherever you go.

This is not a book for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Scott goes right for the jugular, and pulls no punches with the techniques shown. His style is very much ýin your faceý and up close and personal. As he puts it ýyou must become your assailantýs worst nightmare ý if you are to surviveý

As a full time self defense trainer and part time law enforcement officer, I am constantly amazed by recommendations made by well-intentioned people that you should ýgive in ý to the attacker and just do whatever he says. My experience and research has shown that the individuals who are mentally aware, properly trained and are willing to fight back are the survivors. This book clearly shows how to do all three.

The good news is that statistics show that the people that are the most prepared to defend themselves are the most likely not to get attacked. Although most attackers are dumb, they are not stupid. Just as the tiger looks for the weakest animal in the herd, the predator looks for signs of weakness when choosing a victim. Just the mere act of preparing yourself may be enough to keep you safe.

Waking the Tiger Within is easy to follow and understand and should be considered a must-read for anyone interested in defending themselves and their loved ones from violent attacks.

I ordered this text book from Brisbane Australia one evening and it arrived less than 10 days later in good condition. It retails for about $100 over here yet I paid about $45 delivered. I am therefore happy with this transaction and have recommended the amazon service to others in my course. Thanks to those who made this happen for me!

Great book, woth the money.

Basic primer for aviation physiology. Great general reference for human physical issues and conditions related to aviation. I felt better about several issues and more informed about others after reading this book. Great perspective.

Highly informative. A must read for any aviator at any level of experience. The author breaks down the somewhat confusing dialogue of such topics as hypoxia and hearing and vision factors into a simplified and informative approach.

I've read Dr Rosen's "Guide to Mold Toxins" on Amazon.com. That book gave me my first glimpse into why some of our employees were more sensitive to mold and allergens than others. And it provided some options and instruction on how to take care of problems.

"Chemical-Free Mold & Mold Toxin Clean-Up & Restoration" takes it from there. This new book is an extensive reference for professional property managers on all aspects of mold and water damage problems. How to properly fix the easy ones, and what you need to know to make sure contractors you might hire for complex problems don't leave things in worse shape than before they started ... which can happen.

This guide has given us confidence to do more work in-house. We are saving money and are getting better results.... fewer complaints.

Management is happy that we are following green building procedures "and" saving money.

I can't say the book is fun, but it is a lot more fun than attending those boring seminars where you maybe learn 1-2 things in a whole day. This book has the equivalent of 2 weeks of seminars logically layed out in an easy to follow reference format.

It is amazing what we can now do in-house with our maintenance people. And for every day problems we can do the work not only cheaper but better than so-called professional services.

What types of chemicals are used when you call in outside help? Do these chemicals leave residues that can affect some of our sensitive employees (including a certain V.P.)?

This guide has given us a great deal of comfort in this area.

As a property manager, I recommend this guide as an excellent source of information for anyone that has ever had complaints related to mold and/or allergens.

Prevention, remediation, assessment, water damage restoration, legal issues ... all covered in a well organized slide show format. Short explanations and full color pictures ... hundreds of them showing typical problems and cost effective ways to solve such problems.

After reading this book the property manager (or builder) will have a good understanding as to the types of problems to handle in-house and when to call in professional help.
