The human side of workplace violence

Baron's book gives the reader a comprehensive review of the human side of workplace violence in an easy-reading format. The first few chapters review a variety of national incidents and how the events affected victims, friends, relatives, co-workers, and the organizations where the violent incidents took place. Perhaps the most helpful part of Baron's book is his inclusion of Maslow's hierarchy which helps the reader to understand why some people behave in threatening or violent ways. The second half of the book covers prevention, hiring practices, training, and how to change employee behaviors to prevent violence. This is a great book to keep in your reference library or for use as a refresher when faced with an employee who shows signs of potential violence or uncivil behavior.

A Great Book About Safety

If you've watched Sesame Street, then you're no doubt familiar with the hilarious furry blue monster named Grover. In this book, Officer Grover and Deputy Elmo teach kids about safety using safety tips. Some are hilarious, like Safety Tip #1: "Be careful turning the pages of a book so you don't get a paper cut", but most are real-life safety issues that kids need to know about.

If you're a homeschooler like me, your state may require you to teach your children about personal safety, so this is a great book for that class. Even if your kids are in public school, Watch Out for Banana Peels provides important information for staying safe.

This book covers wearing safety gear while riding bikes or skating, as well as never pet a strange dog, be careful when you cross the street, clean up toys, buckling up in the car and much more. There are very funny sight gags and asides (such as "Never meatloaf sandwich near a pack of wolves"), but each are in conjunction with common sense tips for personal safety.

Highly recommended!

I bought this for my four year old daughter and this is one of her favorites that she wants to always read....it's great because it includes her favorite characters from Sesame Street in a fun format and the safety tips have really sunk in as I've heard her repeating the safety tips here and there (like in the car while driving and she sees a stray dog). It's good because she remembers it because of the funny pictures that she always gets a good laugh from. It's very good for teaching safety tips!

Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-08
This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."

I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.

Informative book for women!

In this world of ever-increasing dangers against women, women need to gather as much information as we can in order to keep safe. There are dangerous places; dangerous situations; and dangerous people...how can women live their lives without being in fear all the time?

The book, "The Woman's Safety Handbook," by Marie Turner, aims to help women understand dangerous situations, places, and people. Armed with this information, women can make better judgements in their daily lives. The author also discusses how to avoid certain dangers and how to react to dangerous situations. This knowledge will enable women to make the right choices regarding their safety.

MyParenTime.com recommends "The Woman's Safety Handbook" - besides learning to be more aware of their surroundings, to always show confidence, and to always be in control...women will learn which dangers to avoid, why they're dangerous, and how to remove themselves from possible harm. There will always be more to learn about keeping ourselves safe.

Marie Turner has compiled an excellent resource for the woman who wants to live safely and be only minimally concerned about her safety. Since this book gives in-depth counsel on protecting yourself within interpersonal relationships, every woman should buy one for the women they love and for whom they have fear.

The Woman's Safety Handbook is not a "how to" book as much as it is a definition and clarification of human behaviours that must be circumvented or stopped. My daughter gets one for her birthday!

Total Safety Culture: A Concept for High Performance

This is by far, the best book on behavioral safety I have ever read. Dr. Geller has a very laid back style of writing, which is very comfortable to read and easy to understand. He outlines many psychological theories in a very comprehensible manner, and reinforces ideas with models and anecdotes from his own experiences.

My interest in Total Safety Culture was its application towards unleasing latent resources in the union environment, essentially making safety a common ground for labor relations. This book is well worth the money, and a cover to cover read will likely make you want more.

Down-to-earth preparation for all kinds of emergencies...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-05
I found this book to be tremendously practical and helpful in preparing against disaster -- both natural and manmade. The author has compiled, organized and condensed a myriad of information from FEMA and other government sources into a readable and useful format. The charts were handy guides on what every household should have on hand in order to prepare for emergencies of many kinds. The author recommended several different kinds of "survival packs" one can prepare for use at home or while out and about -- even an extremely portable "pocket pack" to help one get safely out of an urban terrorist attack. The book was down-to-earth, emphasizing being prepared in order to help others, rather than a survivalist "me against the world" mentality. I would highly recommend it to anyone, whether you live in the city, country or suburbia.

Easy reading with valuable advice not found elsewhere..

I am a consultant for the government. While FEMA communicates little in the way of practical advice on how to prepare for an emergency, this book is a wealth of easy to follow instructions. I fully expect this to outsell Rick Warren's "Purpose Driven Life" after the next crisis. I was pleasantly surprised how much wisdom and knowledge I picked up and how prepared I have become for when that emergency happens. Help protect yourself and your family under any conditions. I highly recommend Triumph over Terror whether your concern is terrorism or simply being ready for the next blackout. It's worth the price of admission for the pocket pack alone.

I bought two books for Columbus Day for my 5 year old. I really love this one however it is bit advanced for us right now. It has lots of captions and very busy. It's very cute and will be fun to use in a year or two! I am glad I got it but would recommend it for a 6-8 year old. We will definitely get good use out of it in the future!

Valuable book for parents and teachers

This is a wonderful book to help parents, teachers, principals, and community members understand and address bullying problems. I appreciated the knowledgeable and thoughtful approach so different from the "one size fits all" technique books. This comprehensive book covers everything from how to talk to your child about bullying, how to empower your child to handle bullies, to talking to the school personnel, when it is time to remove your child from the problem situation, and how to work on bullying problems at the community level. I especially loved the "myths about bullying section."

Essential for all parents

Peter Sheras, a prominent psychotherapist and expert on youth and schools, has provided us with a practical, research-based, accessible guide to dealing with bullies and bullying. Parents and children will resonate with the vivid examples of the variety of situations in which children and adolescents experience bullying. These examples are so true-to-life that one case of parents seeking the support of other parents in addressing their child's victimization was identical to the experience of my friends. In this example (and with my friends), the parents of the witness refused to enlist their child's help in support of the victim. Peter Sheras offers practical and developmentally appropriate advice for the parents and educators of victims, bullies, and bystanders. I particularly liked the chapter on child empowerment, because it provides strategies for optimal child development that would help children cope with all of life's challenges, not just bullying. I would highly recommend this book to ALL parents and teachers. It is likely that the majority of children today will witness or experience tyranny or harassment and this book provides not only understanding of the situation but procedures to deal with it effectively.

The information of this pocket-size publication is used world-wide as a guide for evaluation and controlling workplace exposures to chemical substances and physical agents. Threshold Limit Value (TLV) occupational exposure guidelines are recommended for more than 700 chemical substances and physical agents. There are more than 50 Biological Exposure Indices (BEI) which cover more than 80 chemical substances. Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) registry numbers are listed for each chemical. Introductions to each section and appendices provide philosophical bases and practical recommendations for using TLVs and BEIs.
