Great introduction to agriculture in Iron Age Britain
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-12
The author, Peter Reynolds, was the driving force in Iron Age agricultual archaeology. He was the director of the Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, UK. Although this book is over two decades old, it is still a great introduction to the subject of Celtic farming in Britain before the arrival of the Romans. It was published for young readers, but the book is a good starting point for anyone new to this subject.
Contents:
1. SPRING: Plowing, The Seed
2. FARM ANIMALS
3. SUMMER
4. THE FARMSTEAD: The Buildings, Work about the Farmstead
5. AUTUMN: The Harvest, Storing the Grain
6. WINTER: Making Clothes, Woodwork

A more up-to-date, more academic article would be Dr. Reynold's, "Rural Life and Farming," in the book, "The Celtic World," ed. Miranda Green Routledge 1995 pp 176-209 ISBN: 0415146275

Note: this title, "Farming in the Iron Age" ISBN: 0-521-21084-4 is the original British edition. An American edition was also published under the title, "Life in the Iron Age" ISBN: 0-8225-1214-9.

A GOOD PRIMER ON THESE FASCINATING LITTLE CREATURES

This is an excellent addition to the Barron's science series for young people. This particular work is an introduction to the study of bees. The illustrations are very good and very accurate. All illustrations are in full color. The text, while simple and easy to understand, is quite scientifically accurate and goes perfectly with the colorful illustrations. This is the sort of work that I find students leafing through at odd times. It is an excellent choice to introduce your child to the study of these fascinating creatures. I highly recommend this one and the others in this series.

Nicely indepth & appropriate for preschoolers

So many books on fire fighters contain such scant actual information or completely incorrect information about fighting fires as to make them useless. Happily, this is not one of those books. The book provides a nice amount of information on fire fighters including how they dress for a fire, how they fight fires and what they do after a fire. The information on their life in the fire station in between emergencies isn't covered in depth, but that's not primarily what interests preschoolers anyway.

Great for age 5 - 6 years old and up. Every school should have a talk about firefighters and what they do and the dangers involved. This is a great beginner book that tells about where they work, how they fight fires and how they rescue people. The text is easy to read and it also is internet linked so that they can find out more about firefighters. Children love hearing about what people do.

You'll need this book to really understand and teach Miquon
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-13
I am not a homeschooler but bought the Miquon books to give my children a a good start in math with some extra home learning activities and also so that I can understand how to help them with school homework (They use "Everyday Math" at school.) I'm a smart person in a very technical, logical career field who did horribly in grade school and high school math and the math section of standardized tests. I used to think I just wasn't good at math but I don't buy that anymore as I find that as an adult that I can take university Math (Calc 1, 2, 3) and other Science classes and do quite well in them. The "traditional" childhood math rote memorization and pages of homework problems teaching methods didn't help me to understand what I was learning, why I was learning it, and how to use that knowledge to solve new problems. I do not want my children to go through those years of math confusion & failure also.
Unless you are a math teacher with years of experience in teaching new/Chicago/hands-on math, you'll want to purchase this "First Grade Diary" book along with the other Miquon books. The Lab sheet annotations book is necessary to understand what to do with the worksheet books (there are no instructions in the student's worksheet books!) but the lab sheet annotations book doesn't really go into how to "teach" Miquon. The First grade diary is well worth the money if you'll be teaching or homeschooling using Miquon. It really gave me valuable insights into what you do with your child interactively BEFORE you give them the worksheets. It shows that with the Miquon program, the worksheets really are meant to be a minor part at the beginning of the program and that there is a lot of student/teacher interaction using questions and manipulatives that helps children understand and explore math concepts first. I feel that many of the exercises/teaching methods discussed in the First Grade Diary can be used with any age child. It was also enlightening how they evaluated a "trouble" child in the classroom and realized that he was acting out because he didn't truly understand a basic math concept that the other children had grasped. I've seen other reviews for the First Grade Diary Miquon book that list it as a "nice-to-have" item but personally I'd say that it's unlikely you'll truly understand how to teach the full Miquon method without reading it.
