The author has written this book WITH kids as well as for kids. She has given us lots of tools to use and to copy that adapt to many situations. I'm writing a program for 200 kids participating in a Vacation Bible School "Prayer Quilt Ministry" that will cover designing quilts and using quilt projects for kids 3-12 and the ideas are all here!

Practical and purposeful.

I bought this book during first year of medical school but didn't appreciate its quality until 3rd and 4th year (the clinical years). Concise text with many, many high-quality radiographs and studies. Covers the basics of diagnostic imaging and then moves to areas of the body: head, chest, abdomen, bone & joint, etc. with imaging modalities for each explained. An excellent way to learn how to look at films, ultrasounds, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine studies. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Excellent Reader's Theatre Collection!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-19
The number of same-gender schools is on the rise, and even schools with both boys and girls are experimenting with single-gender classes. Ann N. Black has rewritten classics for readers theatre appropriate for middle-school boys that lends itself perfectly to the all-male classroom.

Many of the original literary short stories, this collection is based on, are studied in the major text-books found in schools, and so would be familiar to both their readers and their audience. Black has done a terrific job finding classic literature that particularly appeals to middle-school boys including strange, frightening, and action-packed stories such as: The Masque of the Red Death, The Monkey's Paw, To Light a Fire, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, White Grizzly, The Pied Piper of Hamlin, Sleepy Hollow, The Ransom of Red Chief, and The Country of the Blind.

The readers theatre format encourages the shy as well as the class clown to participate. It improves reading skills and increases vocabulary while using cooperative learning. It is a cost-effective way to do a performance for a school that may be lacking the funds to put on a full-scale production as well.

Black includes a short background on each author and a few paragraphs for teachers concerning production notes for costuming and staging ideas. The character parts are weighted equally so no one performer will lose focus before he is "on" again. Black has done a good job with translating the stories from page to stage, though she does use a broad literary hand adding additional characters and utilizing narrators. The dialogue is fast-paced and the writing is clear.

Though the title explicitly states it is readers theatre for boys, girls could easily play a variety of parts in the selections, so it would be appropriate for any middle school library, speech or drama classroom, or any classroom that studies communication.

Not Just for Boys

We are meeting once a week and using this book for our homeschool small group. The reader's theater format is excellent, and we enjoy the background information that goes with each story. We have both boys and girls in our group (4 families) and they all enjoy the stories equally. Our ages range from 10-16, plus the adults.

A good selection of stories, so there's something for every taste. A few of the kids are really excited about the sounds that are written into each story and enjoy adding those as we read. We do need to take a few minutes to decide how to divide the roles, as there are more roles than people in our group, giving some of the kids multiple roles.

I would definitely recommend this book if you're considering doing reader's theater with a group.

Public University Education - What's Its Proper Role?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-29
If you are a layman in the world of higher education, with an interest in whether and how the opportunity for a liberal arts education can be made available to woefully underprepared urban students, Readin' + Writing' for the Hard-Hat Crowd will introduce you to the complexity of such an endeavor. The author is clearly an academic, but her writing is lucid even for the non-academic. She recounts the history of Urban State U., a real but disguised state university founded by a group whom aimed to provide an Ivy League quality curriculum based on the Great Books to working class youth with such weak high school backgrounds that some could not write a coherent paragraph. The politicians crucial to the founding and maintaining of USU rarely had the same aims. The faculty had to devise ways to actually teach writing and analytical skills, as distinguished from their own academic specialties. Over time, USU had to learn to respond to social changes that leave it today addressing the needs of mainly older, transfer students who view their USU experience more as consumers of education than scholars, looking at the practical aspects of a degree. The original nature of the curriculum naturally forced a focus on analytical reading and writing as the basis for all university education. The example of USU leaves the reader pondering various questions that apply to most public institutions of higher education today. What is the responsibility of public colleges and universities to teach what students should have learned in high school? For a public university, should the emphasis be on what consumers of education want or on what the faculty/administration believes is the right curriculum? Should the public fund both practical and classical liberal arts curricula? Is it important to a democracy to promote classical liberal education in public universities? This book won't answer these questions, but it will deepen the reader's appreciation of the numerous factors that must be considered in this arena.

Good as reference or college text for higher education

This is a gem of a book which illustrates the influences on public education at the college level over the past 40 years. A strong narrative thread unites the research into the evolution of higher education at a state university. The author injects humor and understanding of human foibles into this concise history, making it very readable as well as well researched. She creates a nuanced discussion of the complex evolution of the Freshman English curriculum, and its central importance as an entry portal into the university. The author takes turns in commenting from the perspective of observer, participant and narrator, and brings thoughtful arguments and counterarguments to the discussion. This book was fascinating reading, written by a master story teller.

This book gives preschool teachers a framework for evaluating their teaching practices, and understanding the value of a child-centered curriculum. The authors do a wonderful job of explaining their philosophy, and demonstrating how it can be effective in real-life classrooms. A must-read for all people working with young children

i like to see the surprised look on the children when we read this book and they realize the answers to the riddles. some make sense and some you have to think about. it has a little of everything for all ages.

Excellent selection and presentation of riddles
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-09
If you are looking for the ideal book of riddles for a young child, this is it. My almost-four-year-old daughter adores it, even though some of it is over her head. The illustrations are charming, and each cleverly contains a clue to the answer (nice for adults reading to children; the hint makes the answer all but obvious to you, so you can give more hints to the child). The stories interspersed among the riddles are fun, too. What makes this book so great is its selection of classic riddles. You've heard most of these, though probably not since you were small. The riddles have the cadences of nursery rhymes, and the same air of enchanting timelessness. Since discovering this book, we have looked at other riddle books and they usually fall far short, because the riddles just aren't very clever or funny. Often these books have many more pages than this one but far fewer enjoyable riddles. There's a reason certain things achieve the status of classic!
