This is a lovely, delightful little story with gorgeous illustrations. The moral is one to be discussed with your child - that if you were like "everyone else" you would lose what makes you special. A must read for every child!

Great fun to share!

This is a great story to share and read aloud. The rhyme scheme flows easily, and the illustrations are just as silly as the text. The kids in my storyhour have loved it as well as the adults. Boy, that is one foolish fish!

Beautiful culmination of the trilogy

Review Date: 2008-06-02
Finally, we get the love story we have been waiting for the first two books to read! This was a wholly satisfying and complete ending to the Flambards trilogy, with Christina bringing Flambards back to life even as she comes to terms with her losses. We've known since the first book that she and Dick had a special friendship; we've known since the second book that she has learned to value people for their merit rather than their class; in this book, both of those things come together as she teams up with Dick to restore Flambards and eventually falls in love with him all over again. The book ends with the two of them looking forward to their future together.

Warning: If you liked this book, do yourself a favor and do not read "Flambards Divided," the supposed sequel to it. You will end up as depressed and angry with Ms. Peyton as I did. I have decided that, like "Highlander 2," that book simply never happened.

I absolutely loved all the books in this series. This one is very good and she is older so the story is a little more complex but all the characters are basically the same. read it!

Education professor Mark O'Shea presents From Standards To Success: A Guide For School Leaders, a multi-layered guide to the author's Standards Achievement Planning Cycle (SAPC), which is a comprehensive tool for meeting high expectations. Walking the reader through a fictional school that prepares to install the SAPC, From Standards To Success reveals the value of each facet of implementation from the levels of superintendent and principal to teacher observation and student assessment. Spelling out strategies to help school leaders identify which standards are most important, select appropriate curriculum materials and resources, create a benchmark-testing program, and much more. Charts and bullet points help clarify potentially confusing procedures and recommendations, and checklists at the end of each chapter emphasize the best practices in this useful guide to making standards-based education a reality.

Second Best Intro Early Childhood Text For Teachers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-05
After Jo Ann Brewer's superb INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION textbook, I would get this resource to keep me up-to-date on the foundational knowledge that stands as essential for early childhood professionals. Even though it lacks a chapter exclusively devoted to the all-important role of play in early childhood education, the absence of such a discussion leaves the learner with a more neutral reference point from which to decide his position on whether or not to align with a play-based curricular philosophy

Morrison presents a starkly realistic and contemporary overview of the field with an outstandingly streamlined overview of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development (where he keeps a keen and faithful eye on expressing the ideas from Piaget/Inhelder's THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CHILD).

After getting the Brewer text and Morrison, you should need no other book of this type. Please try Feeney, Christensen, & Moravcik's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN if you need one more excellent text.

Great Biology Textbook

Review Date: 2007-03-25

This is a well written book in clear and simple language for students studying biology for the GCSE. The book is well illustrated and has questions at the end of each chapter which help with comprehension of the subject.

The book is well organized into the following sections:

* Section 1: Some principles of Biology
* Section 2: Flowering plants
* Section 3: Human Physiology
* Section 4: Genetics and Heredity
* Section 5: Organisms and their Environment
* Section 6: Diversity of Organisms

Overall, a student-friendly textbook that is well worth buying.

GCSE Biology by Donold Gordon Mackean is very helpful in getting good scores in both GCSE O'Levels and GCSE A'Levels general biology. Yes, it can get immensly detailed at certain instances, for example when studying the working of the Medulla Oblongata, The Human Heart and Transpiration. Well actually, in my experience, this book is for GCSE and IGCSE A'levels, which truly goes into the depth of biology.

An Absolute Must Read!

Review Date: 2008-06-20
Judye Haynes has written the most informative, helpful, easily read and understood book on adressing the needs of second language learners on the market today. Her information is specific without being overpowering, germane without being verbose, and totally comprehensible for both those who are currently in the field of second language learning and those just entering.

One of the outstanding features of the book is a section on cultural issues. Scenarios from actual teachers' experiences with ELL students and their parents are described and then explained against the backdrop of cultural differences. This approach lends itself to greater understanding of cultures different than our own and sparks excellent discussion topics. The information in the book could easily be adapted to a staff development format. Indeed, Ms. Haynes encourages this approach for using her book.

I highly reccomend this book for anyone interfacing with ELL students. It should be a "must read" and a ready resource for every administrator and teacher who find themselves responsible for guiding second language students in their quest for academic success.

Kudos to you, Judye Hayes, and thank you for giving us an outstanding resource!

Getting Started with English Language Learners is a top-quality resource.

Review Date: 2007-06-09
Written by veteran elementary ESL teacher Judie Haynes, Getting Started with English Language Learners: How Educators Can Meet the Challenge is an in-depth guide for schoolteachers to encouraging English language learners to participate in class, help them feel more comfortable around other students, and above all, help them succeed. Packed with tips, tricks, techniques, and wisdom borne of 26 years of experience, Getting Started with English Language Learners is especially valuable for educators who are new to the ESL field yet recommended to ESL teachers of all experience levels. "Because many ELLs simply memorize material for a test and don't understand what they have learned, teachers need to develop alternative assessments specifically for ELLs. These assessments should provide teachers with a realistic picture of what individual ELLs can do without focusing unduly on what they can't do." From basic concepts of second-language acquisition theory, to the best way to handle newcomers' first weeks of school, to differentiating instruction for English language learners, programs for English language learners, and more, Getting Started with English Language Learners is a top-quality resource.

This book is wonderful. I have designed a whole week's lesson plan around this book. It's great for kids to learn to read because of the repetitiveness on the story. Your kids will be able to memorize this story in no time at all. I't also just a wonderful edition to any collector's home. Definately worth it.

I checked this book out of the library last month and could not believe all of the various recipes it had for so many different art activities. Page upon page of dough recipes, salt mapping, food recipes, and all the goos that a child would love. I am a preschool teacher for 4 and 5 year olds and I found this book a wonderful way to add to my daily curriculum. Child-care providers should really check this book out.

The best thing is that there are some many versions of each recipes. If you don't have ingredients for one, there several versions. Don't stay home without it!

A great volume about AJA in WWII
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-01
If you wish to own a single book about the contributions of the 100/442 this is it.

This book probably should rate at least 588 stars. 588 stars because that is the number of Silver Stars won by these fine AMERICAN fighting men in WWII.

A lot of folks probably know the 100/442 was the most decorated unit in WWII. In fact, this fighting team was the most decorated unit in AMERICAN history. This great volume goes a long way to perhaps explaining why this was so. These AJA men were fighting a two front war. Hitler and Germany tried this and failed. The fighting men of the 100/442 prevailed on both fronts they were fighting on. These men proved their were good Americans with their bravery and with their blood.

Mr. Tanaka knows, he was there! He was one of the few men to make it through all of the major campaigns with the 100/442. His personal experiences appear to have been invaluable in putting the story together.

The men of the 100/442 had the Germans and their allies to deal with in Europe and the stupidly cruel actions of the American government and people to deal with back in the US and they prevailed.

Mr. Tanaka skillfully weaves first person remembrances into the story, and this coupled with the many fine pictures personalizes the AJA men of the 100/442 and the two battle fronts they were engaged on in WWII. The reader will come away knowing war is hell if they had missed the point before. The reader will come away with the idea that courage and spirit applied in liberal doses to any situation will win out.

Mr. Tanaka's book provides a fitting tribute to those members of the 100/442 who did not live to come home, men who fought and died while their families were imprisoned back at home.

Excellent regimental history.

The Japanese American 100th Infantry Battalion and 442ndRegimental Combat Team were among the finest units of World War II.Their astonishing exploits, decorations awarded, and casualties taken are legendary, but when the cheering subsided the discrimination they and their families suffered did not disappear.
Their story is well told here in this fine pictorial record of their achievements, with 240 photos, 8 maps, and informative endpapers, tied together with a good narrative, to form an admirable tribute to these brave soldiers.
Highly recommended for military history readers, students of the ETO campaign, and WWII buffs in general.
