An excellent overview and resource guide

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Creating An Inclusive School is the collaborative editorial effort of education specialist Richard A. Villa and special education credential and masters programs coordinator Jacqueline S. Thousand (College of Education, California State University, San Marcos). Inclusive education, loosely defined as a process by which schools strive to give an education to all students with disabilities in such a manner that the differently abled students are not excluded from the general student body or separately schooled as little as possible, is described and presented as more than a series of strategies; it is a belief system that promotes and optimum educational environment for all. Individual essays by a diverse assortment of experts discuss such issues as the rationales for creating and maintaining inclusive schools, promising practices that foster inclusive education, practical advice concerning inclusive education, "voices of inclusion" individual and community testimonies. An excellent overview and resource guide especially recommended for teachers, principals, and other educational professionals.

One of the best guides to creating truly inclusive schools

This book provides all the answers for people who think inclusion can't work--that it's too expensive, that parents of typically-developing kids will reject it, that severely disabled kids won't get anything from it.

While I appreciated all the "how-to's" and a clear description of the philosophy behind true inclusion, I found most inspiring the true stories of how children with very involved disabilities grew, learned and became friends with their classmates through an effective inclusion model.

This is a must-read for both parents and educators.

Mayesky balances theory, standards, and practicality in her book by organizing it like a house. She builds up the discipline from the ground (what is creative arts in early childhood) to the unique, but unnecessary, touches (applying early childhood creative arts for holidays).

It's expensive, but worth the price. Vocational schools that offer early child development training use this text.

It's one of the most comprehensive books I've seen concerning the early childhood setting and it's learning centers. The Authors present a wide variety of learning center activities that meet the changing developmental needs of young children, focuses on open-ended materials and experiences so well suited to the interest and abilities of young children. This book is a valuable source of information that can fit into any style teaching!

Absolutely wonderful!

The most comprehensive book for the early childhood teacher looking to set up a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment. From child care programs needing to select an official "curriculum" to teachers reading for their own benefit, this book is a wealth of information. I love this book because it is easily readable, contains information for parents about what happens in the classroom, and allows teachers flexibility. The newest edition contains information on assessment, planning, and additional interest areas.

Congratulations to Marjorie for pulling together the information in this resource, and her supportive husband for living with her during those 3 years. As a consultant I am frequently asked about citations of instructional strategies....now I can cite one book. I was especially impressed by Marjorie's comments regarding the effectiveness of these strategies for all grades, not just K-8. Not only did she state that adaptation was possible, but she gave examples of methods for adapting strategies. A job well done. This book should be a resource in every school's professional library--and if you don't have one, start one!!

I am always fascinated by creativity. Whenever I come across a creativity book, irrespective of whether it is intended for the business or academic world, I will always scan it first and if it appears "intriguing" judging from the front/back covers, table of contents and index page, I will often peruse - and reflect on - it. I will often adapt the ideas to my consulting work. In this case, this book did not disappoint me.

In a nut shell, this is a book about practical strategies for teaching and learning creative thinking skills. Although it has been written primarily for teachers and students, I find that many of the information on theory, strategies and assessment covered by the book are applicable and useful for anyone who is interested in exploring creativity, even in non-academic areas.

The main bulk of the book pertains to approaches to teaching the basic curriculum - mathematics, science, social studies, language - that encourage creative problem solving, and information on how research on motivation and creativity applies to decisions about classroom management, organisation and assessment.

The book is divided into two parts: "Understanding Creative People & Processes" and "Creativity & Classroom Life.". The first part gives an excellent grounding in creativity fundamentals. The second part gives practical suggestions for creativity design, development & assessment in a classroom setting. For teachers, this part, especially the assessment tools, is a real gem.

Very fortunately, the author's fluid writing style, coupled with her interesting case studies and numerous applications, makes the book easy-to-follow.

The author has very masterfully organised practical activities, such as "Thinking about the Classroom" and "Journeying and Journalling" in every chapter. For readers, there are a lot of points to ponder, several questions to ask and many things to do. This is the part I enjoyed "playing" with them the most.

At the end of each chapter, and also in the bibliography, the author has listed many useful references for further exploration. For research purposes, this is a gold mine.

For parents, who are looking for simple ideas and practical strategies to develop creative activities for their children, I dare say this book is definitely a very helpful guide.

As a matter of fact, if you are just looking for creative opportunities in your own life, this book (particularly chapter 6) can be a valuable source of curious delight.

The collaborative work of academicians and teachers Jane Berner, Sabrina Minser, and Hellen Burkart Presser, "Curriculum Connections For Tree House Travelers For Grades K-4" provides unites of study that will enable students to enhance and apply their academic skills while learning about dinosaurs, knights, castles, Eygptian mummies, pyramids, pirates, buried treasure, and more. Literature-based, the units are specifically designed as hands-on activities for elementary students (but are also adaptable to interest middle school students as well), and feature high-interest topics that librarians and teachers can use all during the school year, and in summer reading programs as well. By using both fiction and non-fiction source material, students will engage in expository reading skills based on sound pedagogical practices. Profusely illustrated and drawing from the popular 'Magic Tree House' series by Mary Pope Osborne, "Curriculum Connections For Tree House Travelers For Grades K-4" is an ideal reading skills development curriculum supplement -- and is highly recommended for use by home schooling parents as well.

This is one of several required texts for a graduate level nursing course in Curriculum Development I am taking at James Madison University. It is one of the best in the field of nursing education and one of the most readable. It is thorough without being too wordy, and is strongly evidence-based. I recommend it for future nurse educators even if you don't have to buy it for a course.

Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing

Review Date: 2005-03-03

Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing by Sarah B. Keating (ed.) (2006) has seven sections and 15 chapters as a practical guide for developing curricula at the ADN, BSN, entry level masters, specialty and advanced practice masters, and doctoral programs. Section one is introduction to the history of curriculum development and faculty role. Section two is about learning theories, education taxonomies, and critical thinking. Section three presents the external and internal frame factors for conducting a needs assessment for reviewing and developing curricula. Section four, curriculum development, addresses undergraduate and graduate components of the curriculum. Section five, curriculum and program evaluation, covers master planning for program and curriculum evaluation, application of educational evaluation models, and planning for accreditation. Section six adapts curriculum development and evaluation to staff development and client-centered health education. Section seven reveals issues and trends in curriculum development and evaluation. The chapters are written by 12 contributing authors. Keating writes "A curriculum is the formal plan of study that provides the philosophical underpinning, goals, and guidelines for the delivery of a specific educational program." Faculty is responsible and need a view of the curriculum as a whole. History is a strength of the book. Authors address the transformative and constructivist learning theories, the use of technology to deliver the curriculum, distance education and the measurement of program outcomes as part of total quality management. Both formal and informal curricula are diagramed. Chapters have a summary, discussion questions, learning activities, faculty learning activities and references. Figures, tables, case studies, and examples of documents facilitate understanding. This introduction to curriculum development and evaluation is intended for graduate students preparing for the faculty role, new teachers, preceptors and mentors for students, and nurse educators in practice settings.

excellent, concise book on curriculum integration
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-14
This short read is an excellent, concise book answering "twenty" common questions regarding curriculum integration. It explains terms such as curriculum integration, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary education, which are commonly confused by even the most forward thinking educators.
If you wanted one book to use as a basis for a staff development workshop on integrated curriculum education (which may not be what you presently think it is according to the authors' definitions), this is it.
Curriculum integration as described by Nesin & Loundsbury also fits beautifully with classroom computer iniatives such as the Maine State laptop in initiative, for those educators seriously interested in democratic classrooms (Beane), or for those educators hoping to develope self directed learners. A gem.
