The 1930 edition is a beautifully written and illustrated revision of Comstock's 1895 college textbook for "teachers of entomology". Lovingly revised with Comstock's blessing, the 1930 edition begins with a general discussion of the Arthropoda in general and the insects in particular. The majority of the book treats various orders of insects including taxonomy, morphology, ontogeny, life history, subsistence, and predators in a narrative form. Insect impact on human activities is noted. It is an excellent detailed resource for anyone interested in natural history. interested in insects.

I am an Entomologist specializing in systematics. This is the first book I turn to when I want to identify any Nearctic Dipteran. It was written by the experts of the field, and it has not suffered much from age. The keys are very good (but with a few little errors), and each family covered is illustrated and described very thoroughly. This book has keys for identification down to the generic level.

Center stage for the tiny mealworm

"A Mealworm's Life" is written and illustrated by John Himmelman. The book combines a simple text with beautiful images. Also included is a short glossary of terms. Set on a farm, the book tells the story of a mealworm's life from her being laid as an egg to the hatching of her own offspring. The text covers its main character's metamorphoses, encounters with other creatures, etc.

This superb book brings a sense of both dignity and magic to the life of this tiny creature. The illustrations are truly beautiful and are rich in subtle details--the scales on a chicken's foot, the patterns on a moth's wings, etc. The rich shades of brown, green, and gold bring a luminous warmth to the book. Himmelman includes some clever visual touches that bring an almost cinematic sense of drama to this miniature epic of one little life. Among the many nature and science picture books for children that I've read, I would certainly rate this as among the best.

Entirely new spin on theories of evolution and the arts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-24
Here is a book to read and reread back to front, front to back. The metaphysics of insect life. What can it mean? It is nothing less than a new theory of the way literature and the arts dovetail with existing ideas on evolution- and a bit more. The author accepts the work of Darwin and A.R. Wallace. But he goes on to suggest that if you look at the way certain structures in literature/ music, language elements and insect metamorphosis go together, you are confronted with a conundrum. There is a close relationship between them all. What is it? READ AND FIND OUT!

I bought the paperback version of this book at a meeting for 36 $US. It has two great merits: the balance of breadth and depth in coverage is right, and the price is right. Since the table of contents is posted on this site, the reader can judge relevance for his or her self. In my view this book is a great aid getting started in a project in applied insect physiological or population ecology. It also is very useful in making the most of your trips to a research library if the nearest one happens to be 2 or 3 hours from you.

"Mexico or Bust" describes the multi-generation migration of monarch butterflies, surely one of the world's great natural spectacles. Underwood does an admirable job of describing the butterfly's life cycle, and the text is accompanied by wonderful photos.
