Insects Books

The beautiful illustrations and touching story which is told in first person, or should I say "first pill bug" make this a outstanding story. Great book to use in a classroom.

If one author has really made an impression on my 3 yr old son it is Jerry Palotta. His books are informative, funny, easily digestible and most have fantastic illustrations. He also has a great way of including hidden numbers or words on many of the pages. You will enjoy these books as much as your kids!!

This is a wonderfully illustrated counting book. It will make the perfect gift to give to new parents.

Hundreds of analytical pictures of ants. Perfect reference for texture and form. All electron microscope imagry, very clear b\w.. If you know of comparable refrence material on anything let me know!!

With the illustrations and the descriptions of the insects, this book is a sheer delight. It conveys to the reader the wide variability of insects and their unique adaptations. It is certainly a book for the insect collector and for students of entemology. The anatomical structure of insects is discussed, along with some of their incredible abilities in locomotion, such as the ability of the nostril fly to reach a speed of over 100 kilometers per hour. The inter-sex differences in form and coloring and the variation in morphological types is also outlined. The phylogenetic relationships of insects is also delineated, which is helpful for those beginning the study of the classification of insects.

Most of my favorites are discussed here, including the praying mantis, the migratory locust, the firebug, bed-bug, water stick, water scorpion, spittle bug, mountain cicada, great diving beetle, stag beetle, dung beetle, rhinoceros beetle, timberman beetle, velvet ant, hornet, honeybee, giant peacock moth, emperor moth, swallowtail, and horsefly.

I was required to read excerpts from this book for a course I was taking, but found myself reading (even re-reading) the text for pleasure. Though the material may be, at times, a little too technical for the average reader, Heinrich, nonetheless brings the complexities of the natural realm to his readers in such a manner that draws the reader into the excitement of his own research and discoveries. The text is scientific, yet humorous whenever possible, and always insightful. Heinrich is a brilliant biologist with no less skill as a writer.

I heartily recommend this book for browsing or complete reading. It presents a cross section of ideas of biominiaturization for developing compact energy and chemical systems along the lines of insect or arthropod systems. Ideas are general and presented verbally to make them available to the most readers including entomologists, systems biologists, engineers and others. Since its publication in 2006 it has attracted a wide and diverse international audience and thus appears to be fulfilling its purpose of stimulating imaginative "outside the box" thinking.

I wanted to learn about entomology so much, so my parents got me this book. It had everything you want to know about entomology! I learned the basic facts of insects. I learned the different facts you should know if you are going to be an entomologist, and trust me, after reading this book, you won't put it down until you got the job to be an entomologist. Excellent book!
