This's AMAZING contemporary artwork!!

Kids LOVE looking at the pictures, and they are ideally suited for kids as well -- large, simple shapes, simple colors, and liberally insertions of text into the picture. The stories are likewise engaging, with contemporary plotlines outlining contemporary themes in a contemporary world of fantasy. My preschool students really love listening to the stories as they're told, and try to imitate the artwork in their spare time. A big thumbs up on this one, and all the other Seibold books!

This book was pure antilogic! I loved every minute of it. Every kid I know would love every minute of it, every adult I know would love every minute of it (except for minute 7 - because that's the minute it ends).

I found this book very interesting and helpful. It told how to catch and keep insects and non-insects(like slugs and worms). It also told about the creature and it's behavior, as well as where it is found.
For anyone even a little interested in bugs as more than "yucky", this book is for them.

If you had read "Pet Bugs: A Kid's Guide to Catching and Keeping Touchable Insects", you would notice how interesting, informative and how organised each chapter is. For those of you who read the first book and was hoping there was another, here it is ! "More Pet Bugs : A Kid's Guide to Catching and Keeping Insects and Other Small Creatures" introduces even more strange and slimy creatures that you can keep !

The chapters in the book, like the first, are divided by the characteristics of the bug. For example in the " bugs that live in water" section, you will learn how to keep bugs that live in water.

Apart from teaching you how to keep the critters, the book also teaches you where to find and how to catch these slimy bugs. And if that isn't enough, there's also easy to understand facts about the bug's behaviour !

With over 20 new bugs, from ants to aquatic planarians to crayfish, this book will amuse and inform people of all ages.

Fans of these two books "Pet Bugs: A Kid's Guide to Catching and Keeping Touchable Insects" and "More Pet Bugs : A Kid's Guide to Catching and Keeping Insects and Other Small Creatures" can only hope that Sally Kneidel would write a third book to accompany these two.

This book is delightful. It can be read to preschoolers thru beginning readers, and read by beginning readers. I've even used it in the ESL program I teach. The beautiful soft colors hold a child's interest and convey the feeling that "these bugs are wonderful and not dangerous" without even looking at or hearing the text. The story is factual while also catching the 'magic' of the dragonfly with such lines as this favorite of mine describing when the larva leaves the water to metamorphose into a flying insect, "A new me emerged and left a shell of my former self." I recommend "My Life as a Dragonfly" heartily.

My 7 year old son loves these books. Especially since he's learning a lot of these subjects in 1st grade. He keeps checking these books out at the library so I know it's a safe bet. I catch my 10 & 9 yr old girls reading them too! My 4 yr old will listen to them occasionally being read aloud. I am excited that there is a fun way for kids to learn about science.

My son is 5 and very curious about insects (and most things in general)... the descriptions are interesting and photos fantastic. While there's a lot of depth there, you can skip some of it, and cover what you choose. I definitely recommend it for any child that's intellectually curious and not squeamish about bugs!

Northern Lights and Fireflies
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-30
The few children's books to be found on the subject of the northern lights are typically non-fiction, science-oriented treatments. Nightlight is about the inescapable feeling of awe and grandeur the aurora borealis evokes in us when we see it, especially for the first time. Two little bears awake to "discover" the northern lights while fireflies add sparkle to a magical night.

There are no talking animals here--just real, yet whimsical woodland creatures. Of course they see and enjoy the northern lights just as you and I do. The watercolors complement the story perfectly and make it all seem both real and special.

Besides being a lovely little story about the northern lights, this book has brief explanations of the natural phenomena of aurora borealis and fireflies at the end, plus, inside the jacket is a poster!
