This coloring book has simple line drawings showing realistic depictions of all kinds of insects. In addition it gives great information about each one. And there is a section with a small version of the line drawing already colored in for reference.

The authors have done a superlative job condensing years of research into a comprehensive encyclopedia of insect pests of palms. With a holistic approach that emphasizes the biological interaction of insects with their palm hosts, and a mix of basic and applied information, this volume is an invaluable reference for anyone who works with the "royalty of plants," from the enthusiastic hobbyist to an agronomist managing extensive palm plantations. Accessible and edifying for both scientists and non-scientists, "Insects on Palms" will remain the acknowledged authority on its subject for years to come.

Fun attractive pages loaded with pretty paintings of all types of butterflies and their babies, sentences rolling through with interesting tidbits, all should keep both children and adults glued to this delightful book. Loved the cute fuzzy-headed caterpillars hatching and the odd bit about caterpillars that can shoot their frass up to three feet! Learning is fun. See also Where Butterflies Grow (Picture Puffins)

We have many books on nature for our 2 young children, but this book about caterpillars and butterflies is our favorite. The text is full of fun, and details (many facts even a nature lover like myself didn't know). My kids ask for us to read this book over and over. Highly recommended.

Written by Ant in journal form. As he grows up, he rotates through all the different jobs in the ant colony and writes about and illustrates his experiences. From stroking an aphid to get the honeydew to fighting off a ladybug attack to rotating eggs in the nursery to rebuilding the nest after a flood, this book will keep you interested and amazed. My daughter loved this book when we got it for her at age 6. At 9, it still fascinates her.

My 7-year-old son just loved this book. He got it a couple of days ago and asked us to read it to him several times. Now he reads it to us. He is just so fascinated with it. It has prompted him to draw his own pictures of ants and other insects that are written about in the book. It is told in interesting way that is well illustrated, easy to understand and lots of fun to read. My son just loves to read it over and over again. I highly recommend it!

Teaches children great values
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-20
This children's book claims to teach citizenship, teamwork and responsibility and it does it well!

"It's Not Fair," by Carl Sommer, is a story about a little worker bee named Buzzie, who thought it was unfair that all the worker bees had so much work to do, while the other bees didn't. When she complained to all of the other bees, they decide to create a new hive of their own. Without a leader, chaos soon erupts and no one is happy. Buzzie then learns that everyone needs to have their own place in order to live peacefully. The bees then return to their old hive and are very happy working together again.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it teaches children that everyone has a place in this world and if we all work together we can accomplish great things. It also teaches responsibility and the idea of belonging to a group and working together -- an important skill for children to learn throughout life. In addition, the illustrations are very colorful and engaging.

Natural History and Illustration of John Abbot
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-14
This book is one in a series on lesser known artists and naturalists whose work has not been published or received any attention. In July 1773, John Abbot left England and spent the next sixty seven years collecting and painting natural history specimens for clients in England, Europe and the United States. He lived primarliy in Georgia and Virginia and spent all his life working to supply other naturalists and collectors with specimens and paintings of drawings of birds, insects and plants.

This books is a fascintating account of John Abbot, his life and his work. It is also a visual treat and if you are interested in the history of natural history or as a naturalist or a art lover I would highly recommended it. The publisher, Merrell Holberton is publishing a series on other Natural hisory artists that have not been published or are lesser known. Enjoy!!

Casually elegant

This relaxed account of one of the most obscure, but possibly most important of the early naturalists is quite a treat for those interested in the field of natural history, those who enjoy a good historical read, or even those who just like to look at the pictures!
John Abbot, like the region in which he worked, was an odd little man who possessed many of the qualities we long for in this country but, some would say, have lost. His tenacity, integrity, adventurousness, artistic ability, and business acumen should have gained him the fame of his more documented colleagues--but then maybe the jewel that is hardest to find shines brightest.
Certainly, this book is a gem. The illustrations are first rate, and the text is even better, with just that touch of British whimsey and the art of understatement to make it all the much better. It is written in an almost off-hand style--but don't be fooled. The research that went into it is first rate and very complete. Relax. This is not the dry, musty tome of History 101--it is full of life but has a casual feel, like a favorite coat that is constantly worn. And that befits the man about whom it is written: a common man, of uncommon traits. Enjoy!!

A Lesson in Friendship and Bravery
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-20
Leaping Grasshopper tells his story in easy to read rhyming sentences that capture the imagination of the very young, the preschool toddler, and the beginning reader.

Jeanne Archambault's delightful narrative is accompanied by Dwight Smith's illustrations. These pictures depict the critters Grasshopper leaps over as he hurries through the day. He does not stop to say "hello" or get their names.

Grasshopper ignores, beaver, birdie, mole, bunny, ladybug, squirrel, butterfly, and piggy. Suddenly faced with the glowering scowl of a big black cat, He becomes afraid. His calls for help go unheeded. Bravely, he speaks to the cat. Soon they are playfully enjoying each other. Grasshopper realizes he has missed friendship by leaping over others and determines to slow down and be a friend to everyone.

I enjoyed the flowing rhythm, the vibrant colors of the illustrations, and the lessons on overcoming shyness and taking time to make friends with others to help them in time of need.

"Leaping Grasshopper" encourages visualizing, and a creative imagination. Even the youngest toddler will soon be looking at the pictures and verbalizing their own story line.

This is a beautiful book for gift giving, for the home nursery and for preschool libraries.
