My son fell in love with "Bee Safe" at 3 months of age, leading me to track down the other 3 of the series though they are currently out of print. He adores all 4 "Bee Attitudes" books, smiling upon turning each colourful page. The illustrations are vibrant and sweet, this particular book having a baseball theme. "Bee Happy when you wake up (baseball gear by his bed), Bee Happy when you snooze, Bee Happy when you're winning (playing baseball), Bee Happy when you lose (smiling and shaking hands with the winner)...For Happiness in all you do, Just Bee Happy to be you!, "You are a Winner!". A great book for kids to teach them not only about personal happiness, but about being happy for others. We love this book!

The fourth in The Bee Attitudes featuring a friendly, brightly colored bee is "Bee Happy." These sturdy board books by Charles Reasoner appeal to children with their primary colors and simple wording.

For instance, "Bee Happy" suggests starting the day right by being happy when you wake up, and then being happy when you "snooze."

Other injunctions include being happy when you win and lose. Most importantly, "Just bee happy to be you."

He adores all 4 "Bee Attitudes" books, smiling upon turning each colourful page. The illustrations are vibrant and sweet, this particular book having a kite theme. "Bee Smart and ask questions (talking with a kite flyer), Bee Smart and well-read (at the library reading books about kites and kite flying), Bee Smart with your money (counting coins in a piggy bank), Bee Smart think ahead (saving up for a kite) , Never stop learning or thinking things through (following instructions to assemble his kite kit), And you will Bee Smart - whatever you do! (successfully flying his big red kite) We love this book! If you work towards your goals you will achieve.

The third book in Charles Reasoner's happy and educational series for very young readers reminds little ones of the value of intelligence.

"Bee Smart" is the cautionary note here - be smart by asking questions, by reading, by being careful with your money, by thinking ahead, and thinking things through.

Excellent advice for all of us - whether young, not so young or older.

Krebs has written a delightful book that brings to life a glowing glimpse of "The Beeman." Seen through the eyes of a grandchild, this book invokes a warm town as gentle bee-keeping facts are given. Her book is an excellent addition to a family library or a classroom's apiary unit. I can't wait to see her other books.

This warm, appealing picture book about bee-keeping (and grandparenting) is a delight from beginning to end. The text is spare and rhythmic, perfect for reading aloud, and the illustrations are full of bright colors and cheerfully inviting. Bees tend to fascinate young children, even if they frighten them; this book offers an insightful, reassuring look at the pleasures of bee-keeping for a little girl and her grandfather.

This is a great story about the life of Betsy the Bee. My kids love the story and ask us to read it all the time. They love the flower illustrations and now have an understanding of the purpose that bee's serve.

They ask to read it every night!

This is a fascinating book for any curious mind. The writing is often more technical than necessary to satisfy the casual interest of a layman or amature water bear hunter. It is afterall written for those working professionally with water bears. But it is well written and well constructed so, even though I don't understand much of the more technical terminology, it's a very enjoyable read. The pictures are fantastic as well -- I especially like the SEM of a water bear with bacteria on its head. One caveat: I see that this book is selling used through Amazon for over $200. This book is still in print! Before you purchase it from any US seller, compare the price with buying directly from the publisher, Portland Press, in London. 60 pounds plus shipping. Fortunately for me, I bought it when the dollar was stronger, but you can still get it for a lot less than $200. This book is a thrill-ride from start to end. Unbelievable you say - but it's true. The author's engaging down to earth style makes this read like a movie. I learned more about insects from this book than any other insect book I've started to read and put down. The only other book I can compare it to is David Attenborough's Life in the Undergrowth. Attenborough is a great writer. And he has amazing pictures. but The Birder's Bug Book is the one I would buy, and would give to my kids. It's just an incredibly fun book to read, and it really reveals (as a previous reviewer has noted) the web of life.

This is a very informative, easy to read book that talks about the interrelationships of bugs and birds, how they've evolved together, how bugs try to deter birds, how birds work to overcome the defenses, and how people are playing a role. It goes into detail that is just enough for someone like me who doesn't have a science background but want to know more than tjust the basics. Its got a lot of fun (and not so fun) facts that make you think and simply broaden your perspectives. I'm glad I bought it

I had the pleasure of meeting Doug, the author and photographer of this book while deep in the Amazon. We asked to see his book over dinner and wine. The entire group surrounded the table in awe while looking at his book "Bizarre Bugs." It is fascinating, creative and truly enjoyable. The book is a wonderful way to explore these spectacular little creatures. His passion for the rain forest and nature flows onto the pages with his work. I would recommend this book to anyone - if you dare to be Bizarre.

Creative Senselessness and Prose

Bill Holm, of Minneota, Minnesota creatively tackles the subject of the Boxelder bug. This thin volume includes cleverly written poetry, essays and music on the theme of the Boxelder Bug.

Example...from p. 26

The Minnesota UnderTaker, Thinking Perhaps of Future Business, Looks Me Square in the Eye During Men's Night at the Golf Course, And Says:

I thought of you last night as I flicked a boxelder bug off my lapel.

At times humorous, at times contemplative, and at times downright weird, Holm has created a truly unique book filled with off-the-wall poetry and prose.

Sheer, unadulterated silliness and fun

The concept, in and of itself defies explanation -a work of art devoted to boxelder bugs.

As a child, I despied boxelder bugs. Their beady red eyes, their sleek black bodies, and their ability to fly, were too much for a four-year-old to bear. The bugs hung in massive colonies onto the green siding of our St. Paul home and frequently flew around my head and into my hair.

Bill Holm's book gave me an appreciation for this bug that I never could have imagined having before. The short volume is filled with witty poetry, stories, artwork, and essays that made me laugh-out-loud.

It will be the most unusual book that sits on your bookshelf, but you won't be disappointed.

Some great children's books, like Where the Wild Things Are, never go out of print. But that's really the exception that proves the rule: most great children's books (I suppose like most books in general) do go out of print. It makes you wonder, when you start browsing through all of the lame current offerings, why publishers aren't scouring through existing stock to pluck out the gems. This book definitely falls into that category: it's charming in every way. There's a homespun quality to the whole thing: it's about an everyday world that just happens to be populated by bugs rather than people. The bugs here don't do anything extraordinary: they just clean their houses, go to the store, to the park, to the zoo, and to the parade. But that's what makes it so fun: the bugs here are not creepy or scary, they're just ordinary family folk. This book is a real hit in our house, with our little boy AND his parents. Try to find it in the library!

I loved this book as a child so much that a few years ago my mom special ordered it for me as a Christmas gift. I read it to my daughter now and she loves it too. The story is about a bug family where the dad is a "daddy longlegs" and the mom is a lady bug. They go shopping and buy potato bugs, squash bugs and silverfish to make for dinner. The book is full of clever narration using real bug names and the pictures are cute. There is a bug city parade, the bug family goes to the zoo (to see the camel crickets, and rhinoseros beetles) and in the end everyone goes to "bedbug." I highly recommend this charming book.

I bought this book after we checked out the Webster the Scaredy Spider from the library, and my son loved it. Much to my surprise and complete disappointment that this compilation included an abridged version that the publisher and/or amazon did not notify me by mentioning it in the description (I just double checked before submitting this review). Nice, but ARRRGGGG!!!! My son's wondering where Lizzie the Lizard went in the Webster book now!

Lessons for "teachable moments"

The four areas covered in the four stories (commonness, lying, fear, misbehaving)are easy for a child to comprehend and apply to daily life. To 'hear and see' the stories and pictures is as effective as being able to 'read and see' them. Each story is also a good starting place for discussion on the topic. The book was enjoyed by a grandchild during 'Grandma Camp Story Time' who later returned to read and enjoy the book alone.
