This is a fantastic book for young and old alike. I'm really interested in and indeed astounded by monarchs and what they do yet its been so difficult to find information about what they do, their life cycle past just the metamophosis etc. This book takes you all the way through from the spring migration from mexico to egg laying, development of the egg through caterpillar and into butterfly, migration back to mexico and then the start of the return journey north. An amazing book - I can't recommend it highly enough. Terrific!

This beautifully illustrated book takes one on a journey into the world of the monarch butterfly. While it is targeted to those 9 to 12, it works for older children as well. For that child who doesn't really like 'science' but must read a science book the illustrations, story, and side bar illustrations and information, lead the way to discovery.

This book first captures your attention with all the bright butterflies featured on the front cover. Then, you are told of a butterfly that has traveled for a month, living a full life, enjoying nature's beauty, and then dies. Although, she hatched over four hundred eggs and one is about to hatch. Soon, there is a catepillar and then, a butterfly, and then the cycle of life starts all over again. The monarch butterfly, called Danaus, from the Danaidae family of butterflies, leads you through a series of beautiful places, mates, hatches her eggs, and dies. The author, Laurence Pringle, is qualified to write about the topic of monarch butterflies. He had professors who had studied the topic check the book for accuracy and someone who had studied monarchs give him ideas for the book. Also, the subject is adequately covered. There are illustrations, with labels and names that extend the text. The pictures really help you to understand what the author is talking about. This book has illustrations that appear throughout to give you an idea of what things look like and hold your attention. Moreover, the language is colorful; Pringle decribes well the beautiful nature scenes in which Danaus is exploring. The book has an index so that it is helpful and easy to use. I would definitely recommend this book for children. What a wonderful way to learn!

They say that everything in Texas either pricks, bites, or stings, and that isn't COMPLETELY true, but it's close. With this book in hand, you can identify your multi-legged assailant rapidly and accurately and decide whether you need hospitalization and an exterminator or just a Benadryl and a fly swatter. Besides, not all the bugs of Texas are bad bugs--they might still bite and sting, but YOU might not be the target species and the target species might be your enemy: look them up BEFORE you swat.

I was impressed by the overall quality of this book. I wanted an easy-to-use resource book to identify the hundreds of insects I routinely see at my central Texas home, and that's what I got and more! The book was clearly organized with well written description of insects, and in center of book were 63 pages of beautiful, high-quality color photos of the 381 most common insects found in Texas. My only constructive suggestion would be that the "Life Cycle" commentary did not always provide the life expectancy of specific insects.

I found this book to extremely useful for quick field identifications. The pictures are great, as is the accompying descriptive text. The book is well organized so looking up a particular insect is easy. Also the book not only describes various insects but also gives vital information about them, such as their life cycles, impact on man and the enviroment, where they can be found, and what they eat.

This book is very helpful in identifying common Texas insects. Our children love to look up bugs in this book. The only bad thing is having to flip back and forth from the color pictures to the description of the insect. Otherwise, a good book.

I have not read this book, but for the uninformed, the Dadent and Sons company, has been selling products-including stock for the hives, and queen bees, for a very long time. I contacted them in the early 70's. their catalog was very informative.
I don't know which dadent he is, but I would not easily doubt whatever is in this book.

The book also helped me identify the eggs, caterpillars and pupas in my garden. The text is also very interesting and includes information about butterfly habits and food. There are also a few very appropriate quotes in this beautiful coffee table edition. I received it as a gift, and I think it would make a great gift for anyone - older children interested in bugs, curious adults or even grandparents. They loved the story of Foursome's golfing adventures and crowded to see the colorful artwork, especially the spider's whimsical argyle pattern! After the book was over, we had a good discussion on getting along with people, making new friends, and trying new things.

This is a totally awesome book...is what my son said after he read it. And then I read it and I agree! I love Mr. Cousins writing and I wish he would write more! The wonderful detail and use of actual science in this imaginative treasure is astounding! The issue of bullying in this book is sensitively portrayed and also dealt with humor and insight. I think this should be required reading in all schools. It brought up topics around the dinner table for discussion from bugs to treating others with respect and usually back to bugs again. Boys are like that.

Unlike the other kids in his fifth grade class, Adam Cricklestein lives in his own little world of bugs and insects from all over the world. Adam is the first to admit that he is a little bit weird, but this hobby is just innocent fun that doesn't hurt anyone else. But because Jeb McCallister, the sixth grade bully, enjoys torturing Adam and his bugs every chance he gets, Adam is forced to 'create' a bug to protect him from his nemesis. Frankenbug is not only entertaining, but also extremely educational in a conspicuous way that will spark the scientific interests in young readers. Steven Cousins definitely did his homework before writing this book in order to obtain the countless facts about many rare types of 'bugs'. For example, his description of the male and female lightening bug's photinus carolinus (flash pattern used when mating) that Adam used to bring Frankenbug to life was precisely informative. The story line is also set up well, with the reader pulling for Adam (and Frankenbug) to come out ahead of Jeb right down to the very end. This culminates with Jeb's bullying being exposed and Frankenbug being released to live out his life with Adam in his zoo-like bedroom. The only drawback to this book was the lack of depth given to many of the characters. Because Adam was portrayed as the class nerd, children will be reluctant to identify with his character. The introduction of a classmate who was a true-blue type friend to Adam, in spite of his strange hobby, may have been useful to draw in a larger audience. Overall, this is an informative, educational, and entertaining book that many children should enjoy.

Frankenbug is a really great book that tells the story of a boy who creates a monster bug after seeing the movie Frankenstein. Also mixed into the exciting story are hilarious jokes and good facts about bugs. This is also very realistic because it is told in a real 11 year old boy's voice and is not that complicated. I think that this is a VERY good book and you shouldn't miss out on it.

I have always found Jessica Walliser's gardening books to be so useful, but this one takes the prize. The photos of the bugs--good and bad--and what their damage looks like is invaluable when trying to figure out what course of action to take in your garden. I took this book out to my garden and flipped through its pages looking for a picture that matched my plant damage--flea beetles! And again--cucumber beetles! I feel like not only am I learning to identify insects, but I am better managing my vegetable garden, organically. Jessica's advice for "Live biological controls" and "Preventive actions" and "Organic product controls" for each pest tell you exactly what to do when something is attacking your plants. I highly recommend this book for any gardener wanting to learn, before reaching for the spray bottle.

This book serves as a helpful guide to identifying common garden bugs. Although I bought it for myself, my 9 year old son, who is a bug lover, read it, too. Good quality pictures make identifying the bugs easy and there is an extremely useful section on the types of plants each bug likes and its natural predators. Written in lay terms and includes concise but helpful facts. This book is good for gardeners, especially if you are trying to control bugs without the use of insecticides.

Listening to Jessica Walters each weekend on her radio show has rewarded all of us gardeners, horticulturalists, naturalists and biologists with quite ample information on growing organically plants whether for ornament, food or lawn. This full-color-illustrated and short book will help one easily identify the most common insects and bugs deleterious to one's landscaping and to control them organically, in many instances with the beneficial, predatory insects or bugs. This book is not intended to be a field guide. Rather, it is a convenient guide to be used by the gardener. The pages are laminated, thereby encouraging taking this book directly into the garden without fear of water or soil damaging its pages.

A straightforward book about pests and beneficial insects for gardeners. I have looked for a book like this for twenty years!
GOOD BUG, BAD BUG has great pictures and brilliant information about each pest, including what their damage looks like, what plants they attack, how to prevent attacks, and how to control attacks organically. Better yet, it has an equally awesome section for beneficial insects, with pictures, detailed information, and tips on how to attract them and keep them in your garden.
With a great introduction and a very useful glossary, and spiral bound to last a long time, this book just plain ROCKS.

Meet Harry, he's young, charming, has many legs and he's poisonous. He lives with his mother, Belinda and best friend George, in tunnels under the ground. Like many young centipedes his age, he doesn't always listen to his mother and heed her warnings to stay away from the "no-top" world, where humans live and danger lurks around every corner. And because of this, we are treated to Harry and George's many adventures, as they leave their safe home underground, to go up above and experience the forbidden "no-top" world. Lynn Reid Banks has written a very creative and imaginative story, about the world, from a centipede's point of view. Her writing is witty and down to earth, full of funny dialogue and great, fast paced scenes. There's not much substance to this story of Harry (actually, Hxzltl, in Centipede), a many-legged creature who lives down-under (ground, that is), beyond the world of the HOO-MINS. Unless, of course, you are an eight to 10-year-old reader, who likes animals of every kind, especially buggy ones, and adores characters who like you rebel against their parents' every instruction.
In that case, Harry is made to order, and you'll enjoy him so much you will read this book two or three times at least.
Perfect for second, third or fourth grade readers who prefer chapter books with illustrations, this 153-page story of an insect mischief-maker will delight kids who like to read down-under (blankets, after lights-out). Alyssa A. Lappen

Harry is a centipede who gets into a lot of trouble. George is a centipede who is best friends with Harry and lives with him. Blinda is Harry's mother and she takes care of George. One of Harry and George's adventures was going to the no-top-world. What will happen? Will they be eaten by other insects or will they survive? Read to find out!
I thought that this book was excellent for me, a third grader. I really understood it and it was the best book I have read in my entire life.

Spider saved Valentines Day & Thanksgiving, but my favorite story was when he saved Halloween.I found out about this book when I was 5 years old and looking through my grandmother's library when I found the book. It's about a spider whom cannot find a halloween costume, while fly dresses up as a seven dwarf and ladybug dresses up as a witch. After trying on several costumes two bullies stop by and wreck spider's jack o' lantern.Spider find the perfect halloween costume and confronts the bullies, but will he be able to stop them from ruining halloween?

The typical good triumphs over evil theme is the rule for this book. Spider's pal dresses up as a witch. Bad Bully Bugs seeking to ruin halloween descend on the neighborhood smashing pumpkins and being generally nasty critters. Little do they suspect that Spider's costume will be their undoing!!!
An excellent read for all ages!!!
A fantastic halloween book that teaches a valueable lesson

This is a great book that I have enjoyed since childhood. My mom used to read this book to me when I was a little kid. At 21 years old I still read it with her every Halloween. Two important morals are brought up in this great story. The first is bullies are cowards and only pick on others because they are afraid of being picked on themselves. The second moral is that your friends are some of the most important people you can have. The problems you may have are not as important as helping with your friends problems. This book entails beautiful coloring in a very simple style. My brother had this story read to him and he has a family of his own. My sister grew up with this story as well and will read it to her little baby as she grows up. Every time I read this book, it gets better and brings back memories that otherwise may have been lost.

I first read this book when I was seven years old. It was a family favorite among my parents and 4 sisters. I am a first grade teacher and still have an old copy of How Spider Saved Halloween. Year after year it is my class's favorite book. The simple story and illustrations are very appealing to children. The story has several good lessons such as, nice guys finish first, and you can solve your own problems. The story revolves around a sweet ladybug, a grumpy fly and a kind but Charlie Brownish spider. When some Halloween bullies try to take the fun out of Halloween, Spider cleaverly devises a plan to save Halloween for his friends. An excellent book! Children will be reading this book all year long, it isn't just for Halloween.
