Other systems have had helpful guides for filling out the average town with something other than cardboard cutouts - now finally d20 has as well. While the book is a bit flawed in many of its assumptions about a few experts, overall it provides value for the dollar. Something that you cannot say about many of the d20 books.
For those looking for a better source about townsfolk I would look at Mystic Stations Design C&S material or the various Harn products.

A 'Core' NPC's Handbook

Moreso than anything else I have seen, this book underlines the value of the d20 licensing system, and expands in the most invaluable way upon the rudimentary description of the Expert NPC class in the current Dungeon Master's Guide. A must for serious DMs who want to incorporate interesting Craftsmen, Professionals, Academics, Entertainers, and Scholars into their games--and a good bet for players who want to try their hands at playing such characters.

If you play D&D/D20... you NEED this book. There isn't anything else to say about the matter. Its that easy. This is one of the most comprehensive and helpful books I have come across within this genre... and what's more, its entertaining with great illustrations... you will NOT be disappointed!

Our family loves these books. We originially came across them at the library and purchased this one to have in our collection. The illustrations are so beautifully done, I would highly recommend purchasing the full-sized hardback books. The smaller paperback book collections just don't seem to be as much fun to read.

When my first born turned one (almost 12 years ago), a friend gave this to her for a birthday present. Over the years, and with the addition of our second child, this book continues to be in our top 3 books. We still pull it out to read -- it's never far away!

I now "pass it forward" and buy it as a gift for baby/young children presents.

This sweet book is one of my four-year-olds favorites, and mine too. I enjoy reading it to her as much as she enjoys hearing it. The illustrations say as much or more than the words. It's a great story for validating the child who loves home and the one who loves to "visit".

I have become a HUGE fan of every Toot and Puddle book available and want to collect them all. I've found they have a wide age appeal, from 2 years on up to....well, I'm 28. Such clever adventures and experiences are depicted in each book and the illustrations could be the artwork in my child's room. In fact, I'd buy the prints if they were available. Great book!

This adventure with Toot and Puddle is one of my all-time favorites. It is an adorable story about two friends, one who loves to travel the world and the other who loves just staying at home in Woodcock Pocket, USA. The postcards that Toot sends Puddle from his world travels are cute and humorous! The illustrations in this book are incredible. This is a book that adults and children alike will enjoy together. I never get tired of reading this one over and over. It is a book my children will keep and pass on to their children!!

I am so glad to buy a used copy of this book since I lost mine many years ago. This book is so good, I looked it up here just to buy it again. I am rated USCF 1752. Though I am already well versed in fundamental tactics, going over this book again and again is great practice to keep sharp. Any club player should have this book in his/her library!

I couldn't help myself -- I just had to agree with the other reviewers. I learned how to play chess with this book more than 20 years ago and it is still by far my favorite chess book. I played chess in high school and was 1st board for three years all because of this one book. Too bad it is out of print.

Hopefully, someone will reprint it using algebraic notation.

Tactics simplified

As many previous reviewers have said, this is a very good book. It simplifies the subject matter (tactics) and it definitely helped my chess playing. Most of the examples are just too perfect to be seen very often in real life, but they are therefore very clear and the basic principle behind the tactic is evident (and repeated many times). The book does not in any way discuss how to see ahead 3 moves or how to set the stage for the tactical combination. It is example after example of various tactical themes, but it does a good job. Easy to use.

Winning Chess ranks as the finest chess book I have ever encountered in terms of total effectiveness. This book will be indispensable to the beginning chess player looking to enhance skill level on the board and boost overall chess rating.

At the master and GM levels, chess has evolved from tactical play to positional play over the last generation; however, strength in tactical play is typically more than adequate for convincing play at the amateur level, and that is just what Winning Chess delivers.

Prior to reading this book, I played at a 1200 level. Exclusively using the tactical knowledge gained from the material presented in this book I raised my quality of play well into the 1600s. Having vastly enjoyed Chernev's style and his appreciation for the Colle, I followed up by learning this opening and now hover at an 1800 level.

I am not alone among those who credit Winning Chess with substantial improvement in rating. I have had many instances where merely identifying a tactical weaknesses such as an overworked piece led me to a victory; some even pulled out of near certain defeat. Such a concept only encompasses a single chapter in this book, which is an indication of just how much benefit one should anticipate.

As certain as I am this book is vital to beginners, I am also confident this book will offer only little value to any player already at tournament level; perhaps nothing but an enjoyable refresher. However, to the great number of us who are not at this level or are just seeking to find ways to reach this level, Winning Chess will be invaluable. I highly recommend this book above all others for any player yet to reach 1800 in rating.

The book is OK. Photos are not all that great (some blurry and out of focus, obviously amature). Most of the dolls are modern and mass produced. I was hoping that there would be more artist creations, one of a kinds, limited editions, and antiques. Instead there are a bunch of plastic/vinyl manufactured dolls with just a few quality pieces sprinkled in. I only recommend this if you collect that style of doll (manufactured/mass-produced).

Debbie Garrett's "The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls" is a magnificent combination of beauty, knowledge, and cultural celebration! It was wonderful learning about the history of antique and vintage black dolls, as well as the current artists and their creations. This guide provides a fabulous array of delightful pictures denoting the significance of black doll collecting, that is both informative and inspiring!

It is the answer to all Black doll collector's dreams! I have a number of "doll" books and magazines but none of them have ALL color Black doll photos in additon to valuable collecting information such as that found in this book. I must confess that initially, I looked through it four times on the day it arrived. It's fun seeing how many of the pictured dolls I have in my own collection!

Touch and Feel Farm

ISBN 0789429160 - Cute little board books featuring animals are everywhere, so finding a novelty among them is a pleasant surprise. The touchable, feel-able parts of this book are fairly large and the variety of them is nice.

You're invited to meet the animals on the farm, offering children a tactile experience that non-farm dwellers might otherwise miss out on completely.

That the book also introduces new adjectives into the vocabularies of small readers is a great plus. The only potential negative is that, if you get a used copy, the Touch and Feel parts aren't what they ought to be. The pig's spongy nose, in particular, can get completely flattened and the touchable spot of the chick on the cover will fade after many pettings. Buy it new, and it's well worth it; used, not so much.

Both my kids loved this book from a very young age. The touchy feely aspect really draws the attention of little ones. And all in all the books are quite durable. Mine have been well loved by our two, and are now heading to our baby cousins. The farm and baby animals were my childrens favorites.

This was my daughter's first board book and the first book she took an interest in. She loved the photographs of the animals, as opposed to drawn illustrations. The book includes a variety of textures and recognizable farm animals.

My 2 year old enjoys this set a lot. She loves touching the furry parts of the cards and they are super sturdy (cardboard). There are about 5 cards that are way to hard for her limited vocabulary so we make up the names, other than that they are great!

Whenever we go out to eat, we are sure to take this book along. It keeps my little boy (11 months) entertained while we wait for our food, and works like a charm. There is nothing better when he is screaming his head off than to pull out this book and presto, instant smile. He touches and feels and tries so hard to say baa at the sheep at bark at the dog. It is well worth the money. And so far it has held up remarkably well (even though there is rice in the dogs fur and cheese on the lambs wool).

I found this book/series while searching for Choose Your Own Adventure type books. I've never played Dungeons & Dragons, have always wanted to, but no one to play with. The Lone Wolf series is a wonderful substitue for D&D to play solo. I wasn't sure what I'd get or how much I'd enjoy this book once I received it. I'm glad I purchased this book. It was great fun, only took me a couple times to get the hang of combat and calculating the points. It's quite a change from video game RPGs which I'm extremley familiar with. If you are looking for a great RPG solo book to get you started this is the book for you. It's written for teens/kids so it's easy to read and easy to get into but it does have depth. I've died 6 times in my quest and lived 2 times. I'm very eager to get the second book in the Lone Wolf series and further my adventure. There aren't many solo RPG books, it was popular in the 80s. Books like this are a gem. If you have it, keep it, if you don't have it get it. It passes the time, it's fun, it's an adventure.

I thought I had them all, until the internet happened. It's very exciting to see this worthwhile series rising from the ashes. In fact, one might take that literally, comparing the second printing of the series to the formation of the magna-kai, or second order. All back to that old idea of phylogeny recreating ontogeny.

Anyway, buy this. It's the best gamebook series of all time and Magnamund is in the top ten if not top five of all the imaginary worlds of the sword and sorcery tradition.

I haven't been so excited since they started making atari games again.

I read Joe Dever's books when I was in Junior Highschool (more than 12 years ago). All I could say is that no series are quite as good as these series. Rather than continuously publishing new novels from some unknown authors someone should really republish these series (Lone Wolf).

Lone Wolf is probably the best role-playing book series available.

The Lone Wolf book series successfully blends Choose Your Own Adventure with Dungeons & Dragons type role playing. A perfect next level of reading for younger fans of the Choose Your Own Adventure series. I started reading this series when it came out in the late 80's. I'd say I was in around 4th grade. I grew out of the series before the Magna-Kai adventure was complete, but I still have most of the books. Recently, I flipped through book 16 and was totally brought back to Joe Dever's realm of high adventure fantasy. He makes it seem like your right there in the action with potential danger lurking around every page turn. It's extremely addictive, even for people not actually playing the choose a number game. (I always just used a 10-sided die.) Each section of writing is rarely over 2 pages long making it highly adaptable for a TV, movie, or video game series. These types of books are great in helping to develop self-reliant kids capable of forming independent thought & decision making.

I started this series probably 15 years ago, maybe more. I remember being so wrapped up in this interactive adventure that I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next installment. Well, while cleaning off my shelves a few days ago I stumbled across these gems and I tell you, I got overwhelmed with the same feelings.

You are Lone Wolf, the last of the Kai Warriors in the land of Sommerlund. Throughout your adventures (the are 28 books and 4 "World of Lone Wolf" books) you will face monsters big and small, wizards, magicians, puzzles, riddles, and everything else your imagination can think of.

This book is just like your standard "Choose Your Own Adventure" book except that it is more interactive. Not only do you choose your path, but you also choose your skills, equipment, and whether or not you want to battle enemies. This book employs an interesting combat system in which you pick a number from the "Random Number Table" at the end of the book by closing your eyes and poking the page with your eraser (see my shared photo). I highly recommend getting ahold of a 10-sided die to use instead, because after a few books one can learn where the higher number areas are.

I had the first 15 books of the series when I was younger and now that I've reread them, I am scrounging ebay and used Amazon books to locate the next ones. Unfortunately all of these books are out of print. If you are looking for these books, I highly recommend getting the UK editions of books 12-20 because the US editions are abridged and are missing huge sections. Additionally, there are many "broken links" since they were edited so when it says to turn to page XX it takes you to the wrong place. Also, good luck finding books 21-28 as they were ONLY printed in the UK. They are very rare and if you have them, hold on to them!

Finally, Joe Dever has authorized the free distribution and licensing of his Lone Wolf series which are available online. This resource has the unabridged editions which makes it great. I will not give out the URL as part of the reviewers agreement but with a little searching you should be able to find it. However, I am still a fan of reading the paper version, and look forward to sharing this epic series with my children, should I ever have any.

The Gathering Dark does a great job of fleshing out a Dark-ages world, and should be well-liked even by those unfamiliar with the card game. The characters (even minor ones) are engrossing, the villains original and classic at the same time, and the descriptions of spellcasting absolutely enchanting. Since reading the book, I often find myself thinking about all the places I've been, mountains and mangrove swamps, lakes and rivers, and wishing I could do something with those memories. And thats what a fantasy book should do; draw you into itself.

I would consider myself Blue-Green, by the way.

A warning to religious folk: one of the villains is an agent of the Church of Tal, a mideival-christianity-style religion that burns people at the stake, particularly suspected spellcasters. For me, it's a villain I love to hate, but others might disagree. It highlights the difference between religious scholars and true scholars, miracle-workers and mages: one group truly understands their feild, the other just repeats by rote, without understanding or innovating.

Try the book. It feels Right, and thats what matters.

An amasingly well written story talking abaut a young mage Jodah.It is happening during period of time betwen the Brothers' war and the Ice-age, known to Dominarians as the Dark.The world lies in ruins, depostated by the blast of Sylex (Brother's war).Day are getting darker and colder, magic-hating church of Tal rules the lands of Terisiare,goblins raid around and in the secret wizard scool Conclave of mages the leader mage Ith was kidnaped by his own student Marisil who became the new lord mage. But as a new student Jodah arrives to the Conclave, everything changes.He frees Ith and with his help defeats Marisil, who is trying to open a gate to the machine hell of Phyrexia.Later (in the next two book) he becomes an emortal archmage of great power and fights a war with Lim-Dul the necromancer during the Ice-age.Jodah wons it but his trubles are not over yet as his friend Jaya becomes posesed by the evil soul of Marisil. Archmage saves her banishing Marisil's spirit.Jodah then ,togather with a planeswalker Freyalise cast an enchantment to end the Ice-age.As he did so,he accidently rose Lim-Dul back to life,killing him again soon after. Jodah is not known to die or appear in any other book so who knows.He just might be an emportant character in the next one.

After finishing the Brothers War a few months ago, I finally started reading The Gathering Dark. Brothers War I read over the course of a few weeks, but this book I finished in three days. Contrary to others, I actually liked it more. Grubb has done a fantastic job and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next two in the Ice Age series.

It's hard to justify $85 for a jewelry book, but this combines history, technique and art in one book. If you intend to work with jewelry professionally, or are a very serious jewelry student, it's wise to get this book. You won't get the step-by-step techniques, but you'll get enough background technique you'll be able to wing it, usually sucessfully. He covers the international world of jewelry, so it has everything from ethnic tribal to Danish contemporary, and all the stuff inbetween. I sit down with this book periodically to just enjoy the book, and I always find something 'new' I want to try. Many times I use it a reference for finding the basis of a technique, or a particular table that has the info I require. Whatever it is that I need, I can find it in this book. It's worth the $85 and you won't regret the decision.

Around 800 pages of pure golden info, I have read and keep finding new and interesting things since I picked up a copy last year. I find this gift keeps on giving every time I pick it up. He goes into detail that others can only dream about.

This book isn't only for jewelry artists, anybody that is into the metal arts working or a collector. This will give years of educational enjoyment. It is truly an investment grade book of knowledge. I use my copy on a metals arts forum for answers to question from people that are looking for answers that can be counted to be correct.

Not a book for the casual crafter

This book is the jewelry makers bible. I cannot begin to scratch the surface of its value by lising content. It is a gem of a book (pun intended).

Oppi Untracht did the jewelry industry and anyone serious about learning jewelrymaking the right way, a HUGE service by compiling the information in this book and presenting it in clear and easy to understand language. This book must have taken years of research and editing to produce and publish. That, my friends who harp about price, is why this book is so high priced. It is not over-priced, it is aptly priced. Think how much the Oxford English Dictionary costs- [...]
it's just words, why so expensive?!

You could learn a new technique or factoid every day for a year from this book and then start all over again and learn even more.
This book, however, is not for teaching silver or goldsmithing, gem setting, etc. It is not a how-to book at all. It is a reference book, like the ones that the library won't let you check out because they're too valuable.

If you are serious about jewelry making, fine and art jewelry- not hobby craft wire and bead stringing- put this on your wish list. You'll be thrilled if someone sends it to you for a birthday or holiday gift. If nobody will kick for it, save your nickles and find a used one, reclaiming the silver from spent pickle solution and making solder from scratch never goes out of style.

Jewelry Concepts and Technoloty by Oppi Untracht is the must reference text for the jewelry artist. Untracht provides historical reference for styles and techniques, clearly explains how various techniqures can be utilized by beginners, advanced art jewelry students and professionals. If that is not enough, the visuals and historical references stimulate the imagine.

This book was purchased to replace a book lost out of our Mineral & Gem Society library. We have many master gemologists and geologists in the club and each speaks highly of this book. It's full of basics but also provides information for the advanced jeweler. Highly recommneded.

My ten year old loves legos ... and I love peace and quiet in the car! This product worked out great as a "trip treat", the bag was great so he could keep track of them. We use an aluminum cake pan with a plastic cover for a lego desk/holder in the car, but the book with a bag made it so he could take it into the hotel and restaurant with no fuss ... and isn't that what every mom really wants ??? no fuss??? GO LEGOS!!!!!!!!

This has many fun and challenging activities a child can do with Legos. The projects use the pieces that come with the book plus basic pieces most Lego fans will already own. Easy to follow directions with fun results. The child can use the basic ideas and expand upon them, so this kit isn't limited as some are. We got it for my son's 10th birthday and I think it would be appropriate for an 8 to 14 year old.

I purchased two books. One for my 6-year old son and his same-age cousin. They both enjoy creating projects from their Lego books, as well as using some of the instructions along with their own ideas and creativity. I recommend this purchase.

I asked for this before Christmas and got in January. I didn't check the contents of the bag until Saturday (February 2nd) when I had time to start building the models. Six pices were missing, two of them very important (24-tooth gear wheels). I got some extra-pieces, but some models I won't be able to build because of the missing gear wheels. I tried returning the item to Amazon but I had until January 31st so if anyone buys this please check it very soon, the models are fine, easy to do, BUT I WANT MY MISSING PIECES!!!

This a great addition to any d20 campaign, but particularly D&D ones! It finally gives playable options for overcoming obstacles sans fighting. Well there is fighting and battle scenarios in the book, but their are also lots of scenerios, and ideas for more, that involve more thinking and skill use then base attack score and spells per day. A good buy!

This is a refreshing sourcebook filled with interesting scenarios that will challenge and refresh your game. Say good bye to the dry, repetitive "kill the monster" adventures. Its a breath of fresh air to have your players utilize that dusty section of their character sheet that tracks their skills.

This is the most impressive sourcebook I've seen in a long time. It is essentially a conglomeration of encounters all set in the same general area. While many of the encounters seem a bit overpowered, each has a number of non-combat options to make them easier, or even completely avoidable. I LOVE this, and try to do similar things in just about all my games. If you think ahead and use all of your abilities, your encounters should be much easier than just storming straight ahead. The guys at Skirmisher understand this, and have come up with what I think are some really interesting scenarios. Perhaps the best compliment I can give this book is that I will use it enthusiastically in my future games. And the AC/DC references don't hurt a bit, either.
