Once you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.Review Date: 2001-11-24
Gerald Meyers understands crises. As the former chief executive of American Motors and now University of Michigan professor, he speaks from experience, which lends credibility to his 8 crises-solving management styles.
Professor Meyers presents the reader with insights from his guests lecturers, a group of former chief executives each of whom have faced major crises in running their businesses. Given Meyers background, one would think that he would pontificate about the pros and cons of the decisions these executives made, but he doesn't. Instead, he let's them speak for themselves, giving us their perspective on the challenges they dealt with. Yet, even though it's a one-sided account, the reader walks away with an appreciation of the enormity of the task that these chief executives faced, and the style they used to bring their companies out of the crises.
A great read before you find yourself in a hole.

Thinking Outside of the Box-Put into PracticeReview Date: 2000-08-19
Clearly written, precise accounts showing how today's top executives apply their individual attributes and personalities in solving and avoiding business crises. The book demonstrates that managing is 4 parts art and 1 part management theory.
This book is both entertaining and insightful. It held my attention like few other business texts.
Essential read for executivesReview Date: 2000-04-18
You Had to Be ThereReview Date: 2000-09-22
Drawing on personal observations and interrogations in MBA classes, Gerald Meyers has created leadership style categories in this interesting book that are sometimes hard to grasp by those who have not yet met the leaders the co-authors outline. Although he shares many interesting case histories, the case histories are a little too brief in some cases to reveal much about the underlying person and what he (these are all men) does as a leader. That was why I had to grade the book down one star.
Some of the categories were instantly recognizable to me, such as Sizzle Sellers (the perennial salesman as CEO), Healers (those who bind together capable people after a major fiasco by the previous CEO), Saviors (those who follow a major fiasco that leaves the company devastated, and with few choices), and Dealmakers (finding common ground that expands value for the company, while creating a win for the person being negotiated with). I could name my own examples of these.
I had more trouble understanding Unorthodox Operators (which seemed to me to be a question of strategy orientation rather than style), Peacemakers (this seems like a variation on healers, with a negotiating issue at hand), and Brilliant Brutes (these may simply be smart leaders who like to zing their staffs and operating people -- it's a style, but is it worth memorializing?). You'll have to decide for yourself. These categories may have meaning for you based on meeting other executives than I have.
These are obviously not the only styles there are. Other styles including those for avoiding crises, styles for turning crises to advantage, and styles for containing crises. Those styles are beyond the scope of the book. However, I would commend to you reading Built to Last, which addresses style elements that are at odds with many of the ideas here and which help avoid crises in the first place.
I, too, meet lots of top CEOs, and there are other styles of crisis-solving that one can find. A style that I find particularly compelling is that of changing the business model by encouraging innovation in that area. I think that style will be a dominant one in the future. Another will be the person who can develop an organization that generates strategies that work in any business environment. So don't let your thinking be too limited by these style types. Better ones may be emerging.
The typology will be especially useful to boards of directors as they consider what kind of a CEO they want to lead the company next, and what sort of leadership team should be developed.
After you have considered these styles, ask yourself these questions: (1) Which style (if one of these) do you use? (2) What are the drawbacks of that style in crisis and noncrisis situations? (3) What style would work better? (4) Why? (5) What style would you most like to have others apply to you?
Too many of us are not conscious enough about our own styles. Some of the people in the profiles seemed quite surprised by how they are perceived by others. That's perhaps the greatest vulnerability you can have in employing a style.

Scandles and Food, an interesting comboReview Date: 2008-02-02
Laurie Jacobson delves into some of Tinsletowns most interesting stories.
From the murder trial of Spade Cooley (who killed his second wife in the 1940's) to the untimly death of the orginal Edna Turnblat (Divine) Lauie Jacobson tells about the scandals and then shows a recipe connected to that person (After talking about Roman Polanski she shares a recipe for the nachos he at before fleeing to Europe during his rape trial.)
A very interesting book.

Whatta Dish! A Collection of Hollywood Scandals Du JourReview Date: 2004-01-20
While I already own Jacobson's two other books and hold her in high regard, this book proves that she is only getting better as a film historian and writer.
She assumes a slick, quasi-cinema noir persona in her narrative and mixes in a Sandra Lee-like easy 'recipe' that takes a not too subtle slam at each of the scandals/stories she relates. The vanity of the 'dish' (aka scandal/tragedy/hard luck story) only enhances the general readability of this book. This is a novel approach that makes an already interesting product even more appealing. I kept thinking that the author did a terrific job with the material she was presenting.
Aside from the kidding around, this book is really rather fair and factual. The author knows her stuff and relies on knowledgeable sources to substantiate or refute claims made in the book.
My only criticism of this book is that I wish it had been longer and had covered some other stories that I find interesting and want to know more about. Hopefully there will be a follow-up to this book which will do that.
Anyway, this is a very good read and worth the $ and time spent reading it.

An easy read chocked full of great reminders and useful tipsReview Date: 2004-07-01
Rinke's sage advice will cause you to think a bit differently and try a few new tricks that will give you an edge in leading and managing your organization.
I particularly liked chapter 10, Don't Have People Work for You and chapter 13, Trust All the People All the Time. These chapters provide great insights and ideas for leading and managing a diverse workforce with plenty of Generation X and Millenium Group associates.
This is the kind of book that does not require great study or a huge reading investment, but provides great reading enjoyment and a big payoff in sound advice.

Laugh, Lead, and SucceedReview Date: 2005-10-04
Rinke, an experienced executive leader, management consultant, professional speaker, and author presents alternatives to the old saws that populate so many leadership books. Listen to some of the chapter headings: Knowledge is Not Power. Don't Manage People. Don't Be Proud. Don't Have People Work for You. Don't Focus on the Bottom Line. Don't Satisfy Customers. Are you getting the idea that you might be in for an interesting ride?
Each chapter lightly pokes fun at the common belief, though not as obviously as I expected it would. Readers will be surprised at the strong treatment of leadership skills, illustrated with stories that bring them to life. The lessons are presented in a way that holds interest and teaches practicality.
Laugh? This book includes something unique; I have not seen this done before. In each chapter, just before the summary, there is a brief section titled "Smile." Rinke shares a bit of humor with the reader to keep the book light and to demonstrate that leadership should be fun, not laborious.
If you've spent any time in leadership positions, you'll identify with the proverbial advice...and can probably create your own thinking about what Rinke teaches us. You'll spin a paragraph or two before you wonder where to go next. Rinke will be there to take you further down the path to success.

Not just for drummers.Review Date: 2001-01-10
The meaning of drumming (or life?) comes in many forms, and many disguises. As Hart begins to unluck the secrets to why humans desire to express themselves in music, one can't help but say, "YES!". Hart, and to a certain extent, Jay Stevens, put into words what drummers and other musicians have felt all along but have never known how to express. The journey ends up being a look inward; not just for Hart but for the reader as well.
After reading this, I had my wife and father read it. I explained, "This is how I feel about drumming."
The companion CD and sequel book, "Planet Drum," are nice additions but the book stands by its self as an outstanding source for understanding music at its most basic form.
This book will move you.

The eBay Success Chronicles: Secrets and Techniques eBay PowerSellers Use Every Day to Make Millions by Angela C. AdamsReview Date: 2006-12-29
The personal testimonies of those who have made eBay a profitable business venture encourages others of the possibilities for personal growth and development. Having listed on eBay with no success, I found this book to provide helpful hints and practical suggestions on how I too can become successful.
The do's and don'ts, proven skills and experiences of the Power Sellers enable the Readers to become better informed and also sparks ideas for setting up ones own eBay business. The author took great effort to not only interview top Sellers but to layout those interviews in a way that Readers could easily understand who they are, their contact information as well as their websites.
Web resources as well as graphical statistics through charts and graphs provide the Readers with additional resources to obtain further information on how to get started on eBay. The most intriguing part of this book was the final advice and words of wisdom from those who have made it on eBay.

A must-have book Review Date: 2008-09-08
As a former practitioner of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and avid proponent of the system, I commend Gary Craig in providing this concise, small-sized manual that is chock-full of information, not only for someone wanting to learn about EFT but for practitioners to expand their knowledge. Understanding and knowing about the body's energy system is the key to successful results from EFT.
Craig insists on learning the traditional way of applying EFT and mastering the concept first. This is in section I of the manual. In section II he does give shortcuts, however, I agree with him on mastering the concepts first. The system will take understanding and practice. Once mastered, Craig point outs you would be able to help clients attain freedom in their lives; freedom from negative emotions and self-doubt. He also indicates we can manifest results in goals, e.g., creating greater income. The benefits are abundant on all levels - emotional, physical, and spiritual.
"The EFT Manual" provides steps (Craig calls this the basic recipe): 1. the setup, 2. the sequence, 3. the 9 gamut procedure, 4. the sequence (yes, again). He also supplies tips, explanations, and case studies. This is truly a "manual" for a healing process.
Gary Craig, through "The EFT Manual," has given us an effortless way to have breakthrough healing results. The power of the simple techniques is phenomenal and may be mastered by anyone, experienced or not experienced in alternative healing methods. This is a must-have book for practitioners, ministers, coaches, and laypersons.

This book is probably the best around that is not to expensive but gives you a feel for his grand Egyptian paintings. Some really nice ones of Sphinx, pyramids and also some of the lesser temples feature. The only other book which is now out of print that deals with this subject well is Peter Clayton's the Re-discovery of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson.

For many years, Santa left me a Best of the West figure under the tree. Being able to flip through the pages and remember the toys and all the neat stuff they came with is a wonderful walk down memory lane.
Although I still have most of my childhood collection, they are in a terrible state of repair. It is comforting to know there are current versions being made (details in this book).
