Arthur W. Frank's book, At the Will of the Body: Reflections on Illness, is a pilgrimage through the author's struggle with a heart attack and cancer. His experiences, insights, treatments, along with his wife's support are by no means examples of the average person's struggle with illnesses. Frank, a college professor, comes across as a self-centered elitest and as a patient who was critical of his health care. Upon reflection, I am amazed by his wife's dedication to him as he progressed through his illnesses, especially cancer.

For anyone who is ill or anyone who is accompanying someone else on this journey, this book is invaluable. Richly illuminating and enlightening about what it means to be facing a life threatening illness. It is enormously helpful and reassuring to read of someone facing this head on without the current and dismissive "just have a positive attitude". it is engrossing and a life changing book. I cannot recommend highly enough.

I have helped train family practice physicians and I have used the play "W;T" to try and sensitize young physicians to the viewpoint of the patient. I was asked to read this book for a graduate course in spirituality and healing called: Suffering and Hope. I found it even better than "W;T" for training purposes. I think it should be required reading for all medical students and residents. Physicians are much more than just technicians trained to "fix" bodies. The viewpoint of the author was most helpful in suggesting ways to approach a very difficult situation. I have ordered copies for friends who are suffering from cancer that it may help them on their journey!

This was one of the best books I have read in the course of my dissertation work. I'd say it is a must read for anyone in the health care profession, as well as patients battling chronic symptoms. The book is a reminder that we need to remember the PERSON who is the patient.

This book is a lifeline for a parent

I cannot overstate how helpful this book was to me. My daughter was diagnosed with Wilms (kidney) cancer 14 months ago. This book was given to me several days after her initial diagnosis and I turned to it many, many times over the long journey to recovery. Even today, with my daughter happily in remission, I turn to it for help in dealing with late side effects and the emotional consequences of the rollercoaster that is childhood cancer. Of all the books I have read over the past 14 months (and there have been many - I'm an avid reader), this one was absolutely the best. If I could, I would buy up all the copies and give it to every parent of a child with a solid tumor.

A must have

If you have found yourself catapulted into the nightmare of having a child with cancer, this book will help you to understand much of the journey to come. No matter what stage your child is in treatment...beginning, middle, finished treatment, relapsed, or palliative...this book is an indispensible resource. Personal stories peppered throughout the book help you come to realize that you are not alone in this battle. This book also has a wonderful list of resources to help families through this hard time. Buy one for yourself, family members (especially in-laws!), your child's pediatrician, your child's teacher, and your closest friends so they can have a glimpse into what you and your child are facing and can help you along the way. This book should be given to EVERY parent when they hear those horrible words, "Your child has cancer..."

This book was recommended to me after my daughter was diagnosed with nueroblastoma. It explains it all. The book is broken down by topic (ie radiation and chemotherepy) and also by tumor.
The language used was easy to understand. The book was my map through the world of childhood cancer.

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation fully endorses this book and places it on the 'must have resource list' for any parent whose child is diagnosed with any type of solid tumor cancer. This comprehensive guide provides extensive information on the diagnosis, prognosis, procedures, treatment and side effects of neuroblastoma, Wilms Tumor, retinoblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and bone sarcomas. Included is a thorough explanation of the various chemotherapy drugs used in treatment and their common side effects. Detailed information on radiation therapy, surgery and bone marrow transplantation is also included. Additionally, the book provides practical advice to families on related issues such as nutrition, returning to school and the end of treatment. The book addresses the emotional impact that such a cancer diagnosis places upon the child, their family and friends and offers practical insight on how to cope. A comprehensive list of childhood cancer websites, support organizations and additional reading materials is listed at the back of the book. The authors'extensive interviewing of families who have 'walked down this road' offers hope to those whose 'journey' has just begun.

My copy is out on loan (as it often is) so I went on Amazon to get the publication details for including this book in the recommended reading section of my own new book, Younger by the Day (HarperSanFrancisco, December 2004). I was shocked to see only four reviews and that they weren't all 5 stars. This book is fabulous, truly the only guide you'll ever need for disease prevention, nutrition---even weight loss, since if you eat all the health plant foods Dr. Hatherill recommends, you'll lose weight while you protect yourself from cancer and other degenerative diseases. Not only is Eat to Beat Cancer comprehensive and packed with valuable information, it is useful and practical: you can take its ideas to the grocery store and the restaurant and use them in real life every day. When I first read this book three years ago, I typed up Dr. Hatherill's list of the 8 cancer-fighting food groups and put it on my refrigerator. To this day, I know what to include in my diet on a daily basis; so do my husband and daughter. Please: Do yourself a favor and buy this book. And I should buy another one---one for me, one as a loaner.

This is a wonderful Book. The Author clearly knows a great deal about diet, preventing cancer, and how to simply eat more sensibly--and importantly, he is able to convey this message in a clear and convincing way. Notably, he recommends the sorts of foods and preparation methods that are not only better in a health sense, but that are also quite tasty to boot. Since reading this book, I have adopted a better diet--Thank You, Dr. Hatherill!! I look forward to reading the next book you write on this subject . . . and hopefully, you will do so soon!

Is cancer preventable? Most is...

Review Date: 2005-09-28
General Content: Cancer is one of leading causes of death in our world and contrary to what many people believe, most cancers are preventable. Proper diet plays a key role in preventing cancer and this title by Dr. Hatherill is one of the best resources I've seen for building a cancer-fighting diet. The beautiful part about the recommendations in this audiobook is that they won't just help you to prevent cancer. They'll also help prevent heart disease, strokes and a whole host of other maladies in addition to helping you to shed excess weight. Perhaps most importantly the book contains information on helping to reduce the likelihood that your children will contract cancer.

One of the things that I liked best about this book was that it drew upon information from a number of different countries around the world. Certain countries have very low rates of certain types of cancer so it makes a lot of sense to study them in an attempt to determine what they are doing right. For example, the Japanese have a low rate of lung cancer despite high rates of smoking which seems unusual. However, Dr. Hatherill points out that factors in their diet such as their increased use of soy and consumption of green tea helped to ward off lung cancer. Information like this makes this title a goldmine for anyone looking to reduce their chances of contracting cancer.

Audio-Specific Content: "Eat to Beat Cancer" is read by the author who does a great job. I listened to the abridged version which contained two cassettes and lasted approximately 3 hours. The abridgement was fine but given the amount of excellent information in the audiobook, I'm tempted to go out and buy the book to see what else is in there.

Gold Standard

Review Date: 2002-12-30
This work is the Gold Standard to which all other Exercise Physiology books are measured. I was introduced to the Second Edition of the book in an entry-level class in Graduate school. To this day I find it a necessary reference from my library.

Personally, the most useful information to me is on Energetics as it pertains to athletics, training adaptations, exercise testing and prescription. I use this information to help me decide how to train athletes from different sports. But, there is so much more than that in this book. Metabolism, Ventilation, Heart and Circulation (including CVD) is all covered thoroughly.

I especially like Brooks' approach to physiology. Brooks, likes to examine physiology by studying the rate-limiting processes. And to a coach, like me, finding weakness and improving that weakness is crucial to winning. Another topic I enjoy is Brooks' take on the misnomer of Anaerobic Threshold and Lactic Acid.

It's an extremely well-organized, well-written text. It's easy to read and a challenge at the same time. Brooks makes you think and delivers difficult information in a way that is easier to understand than other textbooks.

I would have to agree with most experts in this field, that Brooks did a smashing job when writing this text. His chapters on bioenergetics are superlatively done. Outstanding graphs, analogies ,coupled with an eazy to understand vennacular. The chapter on bioenergetics is extremly lucid when explaining the esoteric aspects of coupled energy metabolism and muscle performance. Brad Nindl from (Penn State University) and Dr. Paul Arciero (Skidmore College) still utlize his text, and often refere to his chapters on energy metabolism and exercise. Many of our lively discussions and research ideas were spurred by Brooks text. Not only does this text service as an outstanding learning tool, when learning the basic concepts of exercie physiology, but acts as a catalyst for innovative ideas for new research. The references are all up to date, providing eazy access to "cutting-edge" researchers. His chapters on cardiovascular physiology are well organized and follow the same lucid format of the previous chapters, however, i wish he included information on the newer developments in cardiovascular physiology and exercise, such as the work being currently conducted on signial transduction and on the dysregualtion of the sacroplasmic reticulum during CHF etc.. Overall i would recommand this textbook to any serious student, scholar, physician or allied health professional who is wishing to futher their understanding of this fastinating subject. I am currently using his text as a major ref. for preparing for part I of the USMLE!! Yours In Great Learning

I received both my B.S., and M.S. in Exercise Biochemistry from Univ. of Mass, and Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, respectively. My former advisor studied under Brooks at Berkely (He received his Doctorate there). In any event the approach our department undertook towards exercise biochemistry/physiology was at the cell and molecular level. Brooks text was central to the program. What is great about the book, is that it explains complicated biochemical processes in easy to understand language and places it in the context of applied physiology. The book stacks up to classic texts like Molecular Biology of the Cell (Albert, Bray, Lewis), and many of the classic biochemistry texts. In my opinion it is far superior to texts by McArdle & Katch, or Textbook of Work Physiology (author escapes me, for now).

The book was slow for me at the beginning because I've always hated science. There was a great deal of thorough explanations about how our bodies function and what functions indicate that something is quite wrong. Because of the scientific info which I usually avoid, I continued reading the book until every piece of information filtered in. I have a Dominican culture where the food diet is very heavy starting with breakfast, midafternoon lunch and evening; So it's interesting to learn what NOT to eat, and/or what eat to make our bodies function properly, and simultaneously loose weight without starving to death. And the best about the book were the recipes suggested as samples at the end of the book! I was so used to heavy meals that I couldn't figure out how to make it lighter. The book helped until I got used to it.

My email address is jaime@warwick.com and/or jaimeisaac@sprintmail.com, please reply if this book is available in English because I've been recommending it and most of my friends are not Spanish.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS BOOK IS THE SPANISH TRANSLATION VERSION OF FIT FOR LIFE.

I started on this diet 18 months ago and boy, what a difference.

I am sharper, brighter, more alive, better at my work, more energetic, can eat as much as I like, suffer no ill health or pain and discomfort...I could go on all day but I think you get the idea. This book is not a diet fad, it is a life changer.

You may think that a book talking about fresh fruit and vegetables, air, water, sunshine and exercise is just common sense. Well you would be right, it is. Unfortunately with all the different opinions we receive from health advisers and food companies it is easy to get confused about what we should eat.

I would suggest trying this diet for 10 days and see how you feel. I suspect you will notice an improvement in well being very quickly and any way the money you spend on the book will be paid back by a lower grocery bill (fresh produce is cheaper than cooked or processed). What have you got to lose?

Well done Harvey and Marilyn Diamond for speaking the truth, and thank you.

Now I'm not fully vegetarian, but I learned to eat well, and practically forgot what means stomach problems. A must read book if you have enough will force to order your eating habits.

This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds. Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back. It is an invaluable resource tool.

Very clear. Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who does not want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, owners with canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is something wrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfed canaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to be handled is not true of birds who were not hand fed. So be aware that if your bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non hand fed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note: Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it is good to also be have the name of a vet.

I like this cooking book and use it wuite often. It has several sections, and I especially like the one on salads and salad dressings and the one of fruit smoothies. The book can actually be used by people who have not read the Fit for Life books, too, as it contains a summary of the main info on food combining and fruit consumption; while Fit for Life fans will like it as it will bring nice new recipes in their kitchen, while still assuring them they are eating as healthy as possible.

The book contains several sections: fruit smoothies, juices and salads; vegetable salads and many dressings for them: sandwitches (yes, you can have a properly combined sandwicth, and once you had one, you won't want to go back to the old way!); soups; vegetable dishes; feast and buffest dishes.

The recipes are simple to realize even for people who don't have much experience in cooking, and they are realized with readily available items. This book will allow you to cook for your family and know they are eating properly without much effort on your side, and they'll like what you cook!

Particularly recommended for vegetarians! But anyone will like this book.

I bought this book for my boyfriend right after we discussed going vegetarian. I thought it was a cookbook to help ease us into a meatless diet, which we were considering primarily because he wanted to lose weight. Instead, it changed my boyfriend's life -- addicted, he kept coming into the room to read me sections. It gave us permission to be vegetarians (year and a half now) for ALL the right reasons -- love of animals, the environmental and hunger problems perpetrated by the meat industry, all-around health, etc. -- although he did lose 30 pounds without getting hungry! This is a perfect antidote for all the stupid Adkins/Zone/high-protein diets that are so unhealthy -- and are only excuses for people to keep eating too much meat (which is *any*, now that we've read this book). And it's so funny and light-hearted that you'll be an avowed vegetarian before you know what hit you. Give a copy to everyone you know! We're sold.

I think this would be a great gift to a new vegatarian or a lender to a person interested in learning more about the specifics. Informative and fun....just not a whole lot of new info for this long-time reader and veggie eater!

Groovy as all get out!!

As an avid reader of "scads" of books related to vegetarianism/veganism - and as a vegetarian of nine years, vegan of one - I've got to say this is by far THE MOST ENTERTAINING BOOK I've read on this topic! I've gasped, winced and even cried reading non-fiction portraying the ghasly side of human behavior and how we treat animals, but I've never laughed out loud - until now! (My cats think these seemingly unprovoked outbursts indicate that I've finally gone insane.) Definitely not just for the flesh-eater, as the title may lead one to conclude, this book is jam-packed with facts and the author's insightful observations. Reinhardt, perhaps the only ethical attorney in existence, asks you to question your behaviors, consider the alternatives and make the kindest, most logical alterations in your lifestyle for your physical health, your conscience, the planet and of course, the animals. Don't pass this one up - buy it used, contact the author, track down an unsuspecting vegan in the tofu department and beg to borrow it! I love this book and am buying copies for all of my redneck, backwoods relatives who still can't pronounce "what it is exactly that I am." (Veee-gun, Aunt Edna.) This one is fun and informative - get a copy and enjoy!

This is a fantastic book. After a difficult holiday with relatives I picked up this book and wished I had had it with me before the holiday had started. Since then I bought 8 more copies and have given them to friends and relatives alike. Information on the benefits of being vegetarian is presented in a non-emotional way with excellent facts to support the information. It covers issues ranging from nutrition to environment to factory farms. There are scenarios for dating, a whole chapter on dealing with relatives, and tips on how to be vegetarian during the holidays without going hungry. There's no meat-eater bashing in here. In fact, a lot of the writing is pretty funny. Its just a very straightforward presentation of information and armed with non-emotional information makes it so much easier to have a conversation with people who try to challenge your choices. I highly recommend this for anyone who is vegetarian/vegan as well as for anyone who loves/knows someone who has made such a choice and you want to understand why. Its absolutely one of the best books I've read and has helped me immensely. Plus there are some really funny parts. Enjoyable and quick to read

Our 4 year old son has multiple food allergies. We started cooking dairy, egg and peanut free 10 months ago and we recently had to add wheat and gluten to the list of banned foods. This is the only cookbook that I could find that provided recipes that are wheat, gluten, egg and dairy free. Don't worry, if you can eggs and/or dairy this is still the cookbook for you. The recipes are given with and without eggs and dairy. I have used the dessert section extensively and some of the breads and breakfast recipes.

This book has been a lifesaver for our family. Anyone with a small child knows that they still want bread, pancakes, chocolate chip cookies, birthday cakes, and brownies. Everyone in the family enjoys the food we cook using this book - even our 2-1/2 year old.

The only thing I would caution new users on is to thoroughly read the recipes before starting and you may not want too many little helpers in the kitchen the first time. My first try at pancakes had to be disposed of!

This book was a tremendous help to me when I had to cook for weekend guests - since I was gluten intolerant and didn't want to make two different meals, this book contains recipes on how to make "normal" meals that everybody can enjoy, yet be gluten-free. What is especially helpful is the menu plans for special occasions - no more pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to serve. And when my birthday came up, I was thrilled to see all the different cake recipes I can use. The cake and muffin recipes I tried were light, fluffy and scrumptuous. My guests had no idea they were gluten-free. And there are even several cake shapes and decorating ideas that would be especially fun for children. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is gluten-intolerant or has food sensitivities.

You no longer have to miss out on special treats.

If you thought that you have to miss out on special treats because of food allergies or intolerances, think again! With recipes for everything from Cookies to Wedding Cakes, this book is just what you need. It is a complete guide to cooking special foods for those with food allergies or intolerances. Dr. Fenster writes from her own experience as a culinary professional and as an individual with wheat intolerance. In addition to original recipes, the book contains directions on how to make substitutions in other recipes and where to buy special products such as wheat-free flours. Her list of hidden sources of wheat, gluten, eggs, milk, corn and soy is an invaluable resource for those who need to avoid even small amounts of those foods. This book could help make cooking easy and eating enjoyable again!

Since I have checked this book out from our local library about five times, I guess it's time I bought one! I just baked the scones and I could not believe they did not use wheat flour, and I was the one who baked them! This book is wonderful and I honestly don't think I could stay gluten-free without it!
