Good field guide for edible mushrooms
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-22
Great book, sized for easy packing in a knap sack (5.5 x 8.5). It's the nice photographs with complete descriptions that makes this the right book to pick edible mushrooms, or collect mushroom photos and know what you have. Although this book is geared for the New England Region, it also is applicable to the Northeastern US and Canada. His details include: cap color, edibility, size, spore print, shape, gills, texture, flesh, stalk, habit/habitat, distrubution and season, with photo of each. One to keep if you can find it.

honey, I shrunk the kids

Emmy and Max are unexpectedly shrunk down to the size of bugs while playing in the mushroom meadow in Dragon Land. They meet some tiny new friends, who help them try to signal Ord and Cassie, who are looking for them.

Particularly good for kids who are tired of being told they are too little for things they want to do. This is also one of the few Dragon Tales books where the transition from "reality" to Dragon Land and back is shown. (This happens nearly every episode on TV, but if you haven't seen the PBS show, this might be helpful in understanding the story.)

It's Handy to Know What Fungi You're Photographing.

I'm not a fan of eating mushrooms in the wild, but this book is pretty good for identifying them for photography purposes.

There is nothing more annoying than photographing a stunning fungi and not having a name to put in the caption.

I highly recommend this book to all fungi fanciers out there!

The armies of the alliance finally meet the enemy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-02
This book brings the great second war against Sumeral to an end. Hawklan has finally recovered some memories of his past. Enough to identify who he had been in the first war against Sumeral, and they are not happy memories for him.

Peppered throughout with little observations full of wisdom on the cost of war, these books are well written and enjoyable. This brings together all the threads of the previous books as the Orthlund, Fyorlund and Riddin people all march against Sumeral's second coming and into the mist shrouded land of Narsindal.

Hawklan finds some unexpected allies in his quest into Narsindal and the "small and ancient" thing prophesised by the dying king in book 1 which destroys Sumeral in the end may not be what you think.

This series of books called "the chronicles of Hawklan" form the centrepiece of Roger Taylors world spanning series of fantasy novels. There are a number of other books which feed in an indirect way into this same story. All the books come together for their conclusion to the overall story in "the return of the sword" which in reality can be said to be the true end to The Chronicles of Hawklan.

While these books could be classified as sword and sorcery they are well written with likeable and well drawn characters that you feel sympathy for. The political systems of all the lands involved are well thought out and they all have a history dating back to at least the first war against Sumeral. Even if you don't read The Return of the Sword, this book provides as satisfying conclusion to this sequence of books.

entertaining collection of stories--but still no Pot Stories
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

This is Krassner's third collection of drug stories, to go along with his collection of marijuana stories (Pot Stories for the Soul) and LSD stories (Psychedelic Trips for the Mind). This is a good collection of tales about experiences with magic mushrooms, ecstasy, peyote, mescaline, THC, opium, cocaine, ayahuasca, belladonna, ketamine, PCP, STP, "toad slime," and others. The chapters on magic mushrooms and ayahuasca are pretty good-sized collections of interesting stories; many of the others are quite small. There are only a few that have quite the humor value of many of the stories in Pot Stories for the Soul, but I think this volume is a better collection than Psychedelic Trips for the Mind.

A Must for Your Library

This book was very methodically formatted. Contents include: Field Study of Mushrooms and other fungi; Conditions under which musrooms grow and thrive (very extensive including illustrations of different species and photographs); Forest Types; Low to collect, study and prepare; Life History and General Characteristics; Economic Importance of Fungi; Common Edible Mushrooms and How to Cook; Growing Mushrooms; Poisonous Mushrooms; Literature on Mushrooms and their Allies (extensive reference); Systematic account of selected larger fungi; Bibliography; Technical Terms; and Nomenclatural Changes.

Mr. Louis C.C. Krieger has done extensive research in easy to understand reference book. While other books might be more helpful for regional usage, this is book provides a thorough overview.

Great Intro to Gourmet Mushroom Cookery
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-22
This cookbook, subtitled "100 Fabulous Feasts with Wild and Cultivated Mushrooms", is a great introduction to gourmet cooking with mushrooms. The book is an updated version of one published in London in 1996 and is extracted from a larger compendium entitled "The Ultimate Mushroom Book." The 128 page paperback version includes hundreds of color photographs that illustrate how to cook everything from "Kedgeree of Oyster and Chanterelle Mushrooms" (a breakfast dish served over rice) to "Mushroom Borek" (a Turkish pastry filled with eight ounces of assorted wild and cultivated mushrooms). The recipes are organized into sections on mushroom breakfasts; soups, starters and salads; poultry and game dishes; beef pork and lamb; fish and shellfish; and vegetarian dishes.

In addition to the recipes, the book includes a great introduction that provides a bit of information on 30 species, including truffles (with pictures). It also describes various ways of preserving and using preserved mushrooms. For those of you interested in developing value-added products, the book addresses, drying mushrooms, mushroom powder, mushroom puree, pickled mushrooms, chanterelle vodka, spiced mushrooms in alcohol, and mushroom extract.

An old reading assignment
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

This book was written by my tenth grade biology teacher and of course we had to read it for his class. As the title implies, it is an alternative look at aggression resolution that deviates from total nuclear war. Femmer is correct in relating that aggression between two countries can be settled by a mock war with little or no casualties. I just thought that a review of a book that is 1.8 million titles away from number one is fitting.

A perfect field guide, if only...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.

This book is, judging by content and structure, the European twin of "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms" by Gary A. Lincoff, Gary H. Lincoff. It is very exhaustive and easy to use, has excellent description and photos. It also came with a vinyl jacket, a very useful thing for a field guide. I took away one star because it does not state the edibility of each species, a crucial feature of every mushroom guide for mushroom hunters. Comments about edibility are sparse and sometimes refers to vague groups of species. If the author considers this for the future editions (mine was published in 1999), this will make the perfect field guide of European mushrooms.

I have 2 other mushroom guides, Mushrooms Demystified and All the Rain Promises (AWESOME PICTURES) and this was a great supplement for my area to distinguish local mushrooms. Used the content of this book with info gained from the other two and pictures and were able to enjoy some new varieties of edible mushrooms this year since morels were in short supply in our area. Great reference!
