This book is amazing, and is my husband's new found hobby book and is already well-read. It is extremely thick for being a mere paperback, and arrived damaged. My only complaint is that it seems to not be ready for the hard wear and tear these mycologists will surely be exuding. The book itself is even more than we hoped for, and is an amazing resource.

It's an excellent book, but could be perfect if it has color spore charts, one of the most important taxonomic features are spore color and Arora recognize this on his book, why let that out?

Superb field guide for the mushroom greenhorn and connoisseur alike. Great color photos with all sorts of information about the little guys that you could ever imagine. They also warn about which ones to stay away from - always a good thing. Even if you're not into them that much, it's still a great book to have around the house just in case you ever want to know what kind of mushrooms are growing in your neighborhood. This would be an excellent book for a classroom or a great gift for a kid who's into being outdoors. Boy & Girl Scouts and groups like that would find this book indispensable for outings and general knowledge.
*Note* There is also a pocket guide that I own that is great too, and much more easy to lug around than this compendium.

i was leery at first about this manga being so complex with so many character, i had to read each book two times slowly to get all the details. but this is so worth it, it has depth and even the secondary characters are great and filled out. i love kira and kato and set.it takes some concentration and effort but what a great story. i'm a vampire kind of a girl, i never knew heaven could be so evil.ha!if you only read one manga in your life, this should be it. it's totally TASTY!

I'm assuming that if you are reading a review for volume 13 of this series, you've already read volumes 1-12 and so a) know how great the series is and b) don't need any particularly good reason to read the next volume rather than skip straight on to volume 14. That said, I'll stick to an important and helpful matter: this is the North American English edition from Viz. Despite the cover art shown on the product page, which is from the Japanese edition, this is actually the English translation. Enjoy.

I was turned onto this series just by it's beautiful artwork. The syle is truely unique and angelic...no wounder it's about angels.

The story starts off as a young teenage boy soon finds out that he is in love with is sister! As if that could be strange wait till you here this. The boy, Setsuna, is the re-incarnation of one of the most powerful angel's in history; and now people all over heaven and hell want him.

What will it take to convince Setsuna, that he is greatly needed by humanity...

I hope you thought this useful...

This book is mainly focused around Setsuna Mudo and his forbidden love with his little sister Sara. Things get complicated almost immediatly (as it has a plot, a subplot and lots of extras), angels, evils, monsters, evil cd-roms that kill you and craziness insue.

Basically Setsuna is the reincarnation of the Organic Fallen angel Alexial, who has three wings, incredible power and a physchotic twin brother, Rosiel who she 'failed' to kill in the great battle. His best friend is Kira, who seems to be guiding Setsuna, and has been following Alexial through her multiple rebirths. Sara, Setsuna's sister and lover seems like just a normal girl, but is she? Many other seemingly 'background' characters come into role and the whole story starts rolling.

The drawing is so beautiful, I've been turned into a complete Kaori Yuki worshipper. I own her artbook and have read lots of her other works (I recommend Godchild). The characters are so gorgeous, you'll fall in love with them.

The plot is very very twisted and intricate. You have to read the volumes in order, otherwise it will make no sense. I have reread the first few volumes many times to understand (the first volume especially, as the first few pages don't focus on Setsuna) I first read this when I was about 12, so it was desperatly confusing, but it gets easier to read as thigns start falling into place. It's one of those things where all of a sudden a lightbulb lights up and you totally understand everything that happened.

It's such a great manga, it's so gorgeous and has a gorgeous story to go a long with it, what more could you want?

I didn't get to read all of this book because it was a gift for someone but what I did read was very good. It's very informative in all aspects of mushrooms. The book includes the science behind mushrooms, how they can be used for ecological benefits, and best of all how to grow and harvest them yourself. The index of mushrooms, their uses and other information was short but very good. I highly recommend this book and will probably get it for myself soon.

I purchased this book as a gift for a fellow graduate student who is studying the relationship between vascular plant roots and fungi. He and our professor/advisor oohhed and aahhed over it. I should have gotten one for our advisor too!

A quality book with great photos through-out and it is very readable! I have come to the conclusion that mycologists aren't pretentious wordy folks! They enjoy their work, enjoy spreading their knowledge and it is obvious in this book! I agree with the previous reviews - this book should be recommended, if not required reading for any botany or mycology course.

So many people are utterly consumed with their work life that they are avidly avoiding a spiritual experience, which is at the heart of what is ideal. This book may help serve as a gentlemenly guide to embarking on an organized hunt for fungi and an organized understanding of how to incorporate them into personal experience. Although some may argue with me, I would say this is actually high level reading.
The book provides the following:
The effects of psilocybin mushrooms
How to identify them while hunting outdoors
Tips on ingesting them and experiencing them
Pictures and diagrams to help identify them
Individual species descriptions
Poisonous look alikes
Includes a forward by renowned physician Dr. Andrew Weil

There is a wealth of info in this book and it is the best book on this subject.

This is a detailed and fun book. It's probably what you're looking for. It contains clear descriptions, many quality pictures, suggestions about variations among species, safety considerations, and a helpful rating scale of very low to very high potency, also making it clear when the potency is unknown. For me, I chose to partner this book with a larger book which includes all species, just so I'm clear what I'm looking at and for, especially when it comes to ingestion, better to be extra careful, right?

And I'm an adult. Every time my daughter goes to the shelf to get a book for story time this is the book I hope she brings back. The pages are always fresh, it seems like every time I turn the page I see something new that I hadn't seen before. My daughter loves the story and can fill in the rhyming words for me. What can I say, the effort that went in to produce this book is obvious, and the rewards are great.

A fun book for all ages!

A friend of mine bought this book for her niece. I read it and absolutely fell in love with it. The pictures are so descriptive and really quite amazing. The use of food really adds a unique and adorable edge to this book. I have since bought the book for my niece and nephew and plan on reading this book to my own children over and again as soon as I have them. In the mean time, any time I need to smile, I will pull this book out to brighten my day. The message is also very "apeeling" :)

My son, who's just turned 5, loved this book. So did my 50 year old brother-in-law when he read it to my son. It had us all laughing looking at the pictures made of fruits and vegetables. The characters are charming, Belle the red pepper, Pip the Apple, and Cecil the Orange, as well as Gus and Button, the mushroom child and his dog. Many hours of reading and re-reading the story and going back and finding all the different fruits and vegetables that made up the pictures.

Marcel Tabuteau is a name any wind player of my age (60+) has been familiar with for many years. As a teenager, I purchased the "First Chair" album with Tabuteau and other pricipal players of the Philadelphia Symphony soloing. This is a very well written and thorough book on his life that any musician, and certainly any wind player, should read.

A must read for musicians

The book offers a much needed portrait of one of the most influential woodwind players in 20th century America. All students or teachers of music should have this in their library. The historical references and personal insights are fascinating and inspiring. Ms. Storch was lucky to have had such a great teacher, and M. Tabuteau was even more lucky to have had such a dedicated, respectful student who writes well.

Long overdue biography of one of the most influential musicians.

This is a magisterial biography of one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. It is meticulously researched, beautifully written and brings to life a remarkable man for those who never had the opportunity to work with him. For those of us who were fortunate enough to have done so, it is a wonderful and lively memory bank, bringing together the reminiscences of a large number of people who studied with him or were colleagues. I recommend it most highly to anyone interested in Tabuteau, and anyone interested in how one person can affect the style of playing of an entire nation.

The world of the oboist is very small. Yet, almost anything happening in the world can affect an oboist. The historical perspectives offered in this book connect politics, war, drought, and serendipitous opportunity to the small world of oboe playing. Laila Storch gives a perspective of how one musician's determination to excel transforms not just a generation of oboists, but a generation of musicians on the American musical stage. Her insights to Tabuteau's personality, approach to life, and desire to strive for an ideal in everything from making reeds to cooking a meal make for an enjoyable read.

Fantastic Book, Terrific Production Values!

Review Date: 2008-05-02
My copy of Laila Storch's book just arrived in the US Post, and what a surprise! First off all, the Amazon.com box was a heck of a lot heavier than I thought it would be. I was expecting this book to be a fairly slim volume of reminiscences and maybe some explication of Tabuteau's teaching and theories.

But it is SO much more! It is an absolutely vital, comprehensive memoir by Ms. Storch, who herself has clearly had a really interesting life so far, as well as just about every possible thing one could hope to know about Marcel Tabuteau.

As a book publisher myself since 1985 -- and a proud alumnus of Indiana University, whose Press published this book -- I've got to beam about production values: This is a 600+ page book, gorgeously bound in "British racing green" linen covers, a smart-looking jacket with a great photo of the master himself, golden binder's bands top and bottom at the glued AND sewn (!) binding, printed on a super premium matte / semi-gloss finish, heavy pure white paper. It's just a beautiful production job, really what books should look like, and I am so proud to be a publisher right now, holding and beholding this thing.

There are some absolutely terrific archival photos, too. My favorite, having leafed through the book in 10 minutes or so, is on page 166, "The Philadelphia Orchestra Ensemble, 1923," which includes Tabuteau, famous bassoonist Ferdinand Del Negro and super-famous flautist William Kincaid, all in their handsome youth.

But wait, there's more: A bonus audio CD is blister-packed at the back of the book, containing what could be Tabuteau's last recordings, made in his home in Nice, with excerpts PLAYED FROM MEMORY (no sheet music in the apartment). Not bad for a near-77-year old, even if he did do this all of his life.

It's an honor to own this book, Ms. Storch. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

This is a story about three generations of Japanese-Canadian "Tonkatsu" family. Grandma Naoe, daughter Keiko, and granddaughter Muriel-Murasaki.
Obaachan(grandma) tells old Japanese folk tales to mago-daughter Murasaki, who doesn't understand her grandma's Japanese well, but gets it somehow, while Keiko refuses all the Japanese things. So they have some trouble with their communication each other. But after Naoe had set out on a sudden journey, they, each of them, gradually found their identity through the (especially Japanese) food. Some Japanese immitation sounds (such as sara-sara, zuru-zuru) are effectively used.

I very much approve of Goto-san's belief; There are people who say that eating is only a superficial means of understanding of a different culture.....You haven't learned anything at all. I say that's a lie. What can be more basic than food itself ?
And of course, "Tonkatsu (guess what !)" is yummy. :-))

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The agony and joy of intergenerational struggles, intensified by immigrant worries, comes through on every page. Readers follow Murasaki's journey to know her grandmother's story through such imaginative contours. Canadian or not, anyone can identify with an adolescent's awkwardness; and everyone stands to learn from the struggle against racism that emerges on the Canadian prairies.

This story of three generations of Japanese Canadian women in rural Alberta relates the immigrant experience through the conflict between three incredible women--a grandmother who will not speak English, a daughter who will not speak Japanese, and a granddaughter torn between the two extremes and struggling with her identity as a Japanese Canadian. It also deals with the characters' struggle to shape their environments and establish themselves in their not-so-new community. In their adopted country, they make new accomodations not only to the past but to each other.

The first Novel from the Canadian-Japanese author Hiromi Goto.
The novel tells the story of three generations of Japanese Canadian women lives in Canada, who seeks their special identity: the grandma who refuses to give up from her Japanese roots (and who hides salted squid in her pockets...), her daughter Kaiku who wants to be "real" Canadian and therefore refuses to speak Japanese, and the grandchild, Murial-Morasaki who is in a quest for her Japanese roots and who struggles to find a cultural identity somewhere between the two.
This vivid life (and love) story is integrated with Japanese folk legends.
I found it very warm, exquisite and honest, sometimes amusing and sometimes very mellow and sad. Great first novel and very mature.
The book won the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best First Book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; so much so that I bought the "100 Edible Mushrooms" also written by Michael Kuo. The photography is excellent, as is the description of the mushrooms. He writes with a sense of humor and avoids getting too technical. If you are lookng for a keyed identification guide, I would not recommend this title; there are many others more suited for that. But if you are looking for a fun, yet practical guide, this is a wonderful choice. The author understands the passion involved in finding morels......

And Michaels book is no exception to that rule. He does an excellant job of portraying us, the mushroom hunter, along with wit and real-life experiences that any serious morel hunter has probably experienced. As I read the book, I became engrossed in the factual and hypothetic scenerios that take place in the mysterious world of the Morchella.
Each page is yet another look into the world of the fungi, and Michael brings that to wherever you might have a read, with his text, diagrams and photography.
My only regret is that when the book was over, I was in need of more, because, after all, there is so much more......to.... Morels....

This is a very beautiful book that almost could have been sub-titled: Everything you ever wanted to know about them including what they are, where to find them, what to do with them, and other bits of wisdom too numerous to mention.

Morels are fungi. One of the organisma that nature uses to help dead plants return their nutrients to the soil. It's also interesting, biologically speaking, in that it is in the process of evolving from a single celled organism (a yeast) into a multicelled organized. This appearantly began about 50,000 years ago.

Other than that, and regardless of the number of cells they have, morels are delicious. The people who gather them are called schroomers and collecting them is an enjoyable passtime, no collecting them is more like an addiction.

This book is a tribute to the fungi, the schroomers, and the eaters. It's couple of hundred photographs are little less than amazing. If this is your thing, this book will give you many enjoyable moments while you wait for the next collecting season.

I learned basics of mycology from my father and grandmother, and I'm happy to attest that V.Evenson's book not only showed me the mushrooms I was already familiar with and that are common here, but greatly extended my knowledge of fungi in general.

Profusely illustrated with full color photography throughout, Vera Evenson's Mushrooms Of Colorado And The Southern Rocky Mountains is a definitive and completely "user friendly" reference manual ideal for the non-specialist general reader. The beautiful photography showcases the mushrooms in their natural habitats while the text provides keys, clues, and diagrams to help identify mushrooms found in the field. The subject of poisonous mushrooms and how to avoid eating one is simply invaluable, while the basis of mushroom structure, life cycles, habitats, and names is as authoritative as it is informative. With more than 170 mushroom species represented, Mushrooms Of Colorado And The Southern Rocky Mountains is a "must" for anyone hiking through that part of the world to enjoy the region's diverse fungi.

My three-year-old daughter kept talking about Sheldon the Mushroom, and I realized that this was a book her daycare had. I once picked her up when the class was reading the book - the kids were completely captivated and knew the words to the songs by heart! This is their favorite book by far: their teachers said they read it to them every day (by request!). I bought it for my daughter so we'd have it at home, and as I contacted Pamela Tuck (the author) herself to get the CD, she was incredibly nice and very personable. Not only is it a great story with an important moral that kids are crazy about, but the people behind it are class acts!

The Adventure of Sheldon, the Mushroom is a nice little story, with a great moral behind it. Its beautifully illustrated pictures demonstrate somewhat of what may take place in some children's lives. The professionally recorded C D and cute little songs are an asset to this book. It is a good way to start young children out, learning how to treat one another. I must say, it takes a lot of courage to be a Sheldon. It is a good children's book. Yes! I would recommend this book to every child and parent as well.

It is very easy for the young reader

and the singing and music kept everyone on their toes.

I purchased The Adventure of Sheldon, The Mushroom for my son and he absolutely enjoyed it. As parents, we look for books that are fun to read, have good morals and inspirational messages that teach us and our children the true meaning of how and why we should be kind to others and why we should help others. This book helped teach my son and my family a priceless value and I would recommend it to every child and adult.
