This book is simply the most complete treatise on the subject of wooden roller coasters that anyone will ever read. Tracing the coaster back centuries in time, Cartmell then brings us through the complete historical time line of designers and coasters. It would do no good to try to describe the book's contents much further here. Even a non-enthusiast will find this a fascinating read into a very interesting subject. Enthusiasts will find it very difficult to put down once they begin reading.

I only recently became a [website user]. Just a month ago, someone said to me, "Aww heck, they won't let me FTP from behind this firewall at work."

And I felt really stupid.

Fortunately for me, this very technical book was not at all confusing, as I ran off and bought it immediately after my humiliation. It is written in an informative and relatively jargon-free language. I have been tranformed from a virus-laden security ignoramus to a web geek security know-it-all!!!

A security architects guide to building secure networks

Review Date: 2002-11-25
Building a secure Internet infrastructure is akin to building a house. There are a lot of different entities involved, that all must work together to ensure that the edifice is properly constructed. If the building is not properly constructed, even a small wind can topple it.

While a house needs an architect, contractors, plumbers, electricians and much more; networks require similar sets of skills if it is to be deployed in a secure manner. The problem with designing secure Internet sites is that the dynamics of information systems means that the foundation is constantly changing. Just as companies are finishing their migrations, there are new updates to deal with. The threats and vulnerabilities are for the most part increasing quicker than most organizations are able to deal with

For those looking to design their Internet information security infrastructure, Internet Site Security is an excellent title to use as their guide. It is like an architects guide to building secure networks.

The book is quite comprehensive in its coverage of all critical areas of security. It details how to build a secure infrastructure and how to deploy policies to protect it. It covers various technologies such as intrusion detections systems and firewalls, and shows how they are to be effectively deployed.

Then advantage of the book is that it has just the right combination of breath and depth. Topics are covered effectively, and the authors do not waste the reader's time by going into obscure security minutiae or academic threats.

Readers looking for an effective guide to fundamental issues involved with information security and Internet security are well advised to read Internet Site Security. Don't design you Internet site without it.

Superb practical book

This really is a superb book. The evidence that the authors are hands on types who have implemented what they describe is very apparent, and take it from someone who has been doing security for years, the problems they describe are what you experience in real life. It's a refreshing change from other books which describe the products/technologies as if they were reading a feature list - it's hard to find a book packed with real life experience.

I'd describe it as a 'mid level' book, i.e. if you need detailed knowledge of x509 etc you need a seperate tome - but if you want a fairly detailed overview of the majority of risks affecting your web site, this is the book to choose.

Collaboratively written by Erik Schetina (CTO for TrustWave Corporation), and TrustWave Corporation senior security engineers Ken Green and Jacob Carlson, Internet Site Security is a much-needed and completely "user friendly" instructional guide to implementing solid and reliable security measures for a personal or professional internet site. Individual chapters provide an informationally useful overview of basic types of security, and address specific issues such as network and application protocols (TCP/IP), operating system and server software issues from Windows NT and 2000 to Linux and Unix, Intrusion-Detection Systems, common security mistakes in internet applications, and much, much more. Internet Site Security is a very highly recommended (if not downright indispensable) resource for surviving in today's era of cyber-crime.

This book covers the subject of Internet Security in a comprehensive manner. It contains excellent coverage on modern penetration/exploitation techniques as well as proper forensic procedures. The book shows you how to build a secure infrastructure and how to proactively deploy security policies, something that should be emphasized in every organization. It offers valuable insight on integration of a security infrastructure into an existing enterprise environment, covering both technical and political ramifications. The book discusses in-depth the strengths and weaknesses of various Intrusion Detection Systems and FireWall architectures. It also provides excellent coverage on IPSec and PAM; better than any documents that I have read on the Internet. The book provides both breadth and depth. It is neither a book all about theories and policies nor just another compilation of internet articles and mailing list discussions. Many insight gleaned from the authors' industry experience have shined through this book. It is a worth read even for a senior security engineer.

We were in Colorado for Christmas and my most darling nice took the kids out to a movie and I don't know where else. While running around they stumbled upon Mr. Ludy doing a book signing. My son got this one. It is a coming of age book for a young boy (very young). There is a mouse to look for on each picture. It is very cute and the pictures are great. My 8 year old really liked this book a lot. So much that I will be looking for the others. I would recommend this book for 4th grade and below.

Jujo is a great book for all ages. On one hand, it's an exciting story about a boy's right of passage; on the other, it's has spiritual messages that remind us that we are never alone, even during our biggest struggles.

My four and six year old children love it. The eighth graders and tenth graders I teach love it. It makes a great discussion and writing prompt.

All of Mark Ludy's books are amazing. His illustrations in THE FLOWER MAN captured my attention, causing me to check out this other books, but the impact of his stories keeps me looking for the next one he will publish.

Mark Ludy's book, JuJo, is a about "The Youngest Tribesman." Jujo must face a rite of passage, a concept rather unfamiliar to most young people in western civilizations. It is a fine introduction to Africa and to tribes with cultures different from our own. It is entertaining, a great adventure story that includes enough animals to keep any young child interested. And the artwork and quality of the book are truly something to brag about. Here's to a great and growing audience for Mark Ludy.

I have always wondered why a dog lifts his leg to pee on a plant. Guess God knew if man didn't have enough smarts then His animals would do the job the natural way that would make His plants grow healthy and strong. I spent several years in the military over in Germany and wondered why they sprayed human waste on thier food growing in the fields there. Thought it was a very dangerous practice at that time. Now I have a very different way of thinking. I pee on my yard plants now and they are beautiful. Save yourself tons of money buying chemicals because pee is free!!!

The is a smart, thoughtful book on an important subject. Despite the cartoon cover, the author approaches the use and disposal of urine in a practical and user friendly way. She presents convincing scientific information supporting the healthful use of urine for growing plants. Also, she gives good information on composting toilets. This is a timely subject for two reasons: first, the recapture of the nitrogen and other resources that are contained in the urine. Second: the disposal of urine without polluting drinking water. Like the Humanure book, this book makes the important point that the use of pure water to flush wastes away into the sewer system is a very poor use of very scarce resources.

Highly recommend.

This little gem of a book is both an informative source of about all things urine - including interesting historical attitudes and uses as well as modern environmental aspects - in addition to being a very fun read due to the amusing diagrams and sharp prose. Because of this, Liquid Gold would be the perfect "stocking stuffer" gift for the environmentalist in your house this upcoming holiday season!

Lots of techniques used around the world on urine separating toilents; along with ideas on how to create you own urinals. I acually made one after reading this book and am using it as liquid fertilizer in my yard. The design is so clean and out of the way that not even my wife was bothered by it!

Doreen and I have been cultivating a variety of plants over a number of years now. In the past we had always used peat but (thanks to the riots at Clonycavan) prices soared and we were left helpless. It was at this time we turned to the pioneering research of Carol Steinfeld and fortunately she did not disappoint. Despite a couple of minor setbacks (before Doreen started going through a funnel) our indoor plants were soon growing better than ever before!

PS. Anyone who disputes the logic of using human-fluids to grow plants, need only turn to the actions of the grandfather of logic: Dr. Spock (not to be confused with the child psychologist Mr. Spock!). Who could forget the episode of Star Trek in which he relieves himself into the ship's yucca plant?

Glad you asked for my comments as been trying to get in touch with Amazon.
The book itself is what I expected and enjoyed reading it. Very well presented and some interesting and conversational topics for a golfer.
Now...I am disappointed in Amazon.com because...I got the 2 NEW books I ordered within days of my order. However, I also ordered a USED book of the same title and after weeks...HAVE YET TO RECEIVE THIS PART OF THE ORDER. Initially, there was a question on the credit card number (used the same number for both the new and the used book)...but after giving you a new expiration date, your reply said this problem was cleared up.
So...WHERE IS MY "USED" BOOK OF THIS SAME TITLE? Never had any problems with Amazon before. Thanks for reading this and hopefully handling this matter. If need to call...Lou Kerrick at 859-734-9630.

Professor Minan is the Tiger Woods of the literary field of golf. This terrific read is informative, entertaining, and provides great insight into the game's rules. Many of the examples used to illustrate the rules of golf are so intriguing they could only be real life occurences. Exquisitely written, this book captured my interest from beginning to end. This book is a must read for golfers and non golfers alike. A true sports classic.

Professor Minan has delivered the coup de gras for those "boors" we all have encountered on the beloved golf course. Golf is indeed a game of honor and self discipline, a virtue seemingly vanishing from the American landscape. This tome is an interesting corollary to another attorney's book, "The Death of Common Sense", by Philip K. Howard. A little common courtesy and respect in many cases is all that is needed. Professor Minan has delivered a humorous and true revelation as to the infringement on decency and respect for the game. Highly recommended.

A great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It answers many of the questions I always wondered about the game of golf. The book is written for a general audience, not lawyers, but will provide invaluable stories to repeat at the 19th hole. Few golfers will ever walk onto a golf course again without being reminded of the legalities of the game if they read this book.
The literary device the author uses to make this book so readable is a collection of nineteen actual legal court cases crafted into nineteen short stories presented in a style that O'Henry would have enjoyed. These cases track the 18 holes typically played in a "stipulated round" of golf, and a story for the favorite "hole 19" of all golfers. I ordered four more copies for my family of golfers. A great Christmas gift. Howard Graham

We checked this book out at the library and decided we needed to own it. It is a wonderful book about a goose wanting to be a father and the "green goose" searching for his "real" mother after discovering he looked different. He realizes he has a wonderful father and goes back home. It's great for adopted children.

Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep.

You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.

I have read a lot of teen adventure books. I recently read this one while I was on a rugged boys canoe camp trip. We went on a 7 week trip with 12 men to labrador. I purchased this book because it was nonfiction and it was saying how these 3 brave, adventurous men took a trip similar to the area i'll be going to. It talked about how mothernature just (threre's really no word for it but...)Destroys these people and they fight back with courage and hope in succeeding this raw adventure. The three in progress of there adventure take care of eachother and keep eachother alive nad in this doing they become better than great friends almost brothers. I really don't want to ruin the book for you, but i suggest so strongly that you get a copy of this book, and oh yea the beginning of the book really is boring because it tells you of how they got to labrador in 1902 (they didn't have cars).

Thank God the author lived and his book is being reprinted!

I cannot say enough about the content and the form of this book. It beautifully informs the reader not only of the enthusiasm of two would-be wilderness pioneers, but also of the errors they did not know they had made along the way to a tragic end. I get the feeling that the author, who wrote the book (according to the introduction) as a tribute to his lost mate, never overlooks or overplays any of the events that took place in the then-unchartered terrain of eastern Laborador. The author also makes plain that the voyage ended his youthful naivete by teaching him the necessity of respecting the natural world and of remembering our loves who slowly but surely disappear from our lives.

In short, Lure Of the Laborador Wild, despite its drab title, is an engrossing work. It is quiet, clearly written and, in a matter-of-fact way, terrifying. It towers far above all other nonfiction adventure books I have read over the past ten years.

The photos are very useful for model builders with lots of technical specs and cut away views. I thought the development of the APC was very interesting starting with the half tracks of WW2. Also interesting was the logic behind development of the Calvary variant of the vehicle. Lots of Gulf War descriptions and photos show the vehicles in actual combat. Overall very good reference book for this outstanding vehicle.

If you are familiar with the At War series of books, you'll know what to expect. For those who have yet to check out this great series of books, be assured that this volume is well worth the cost. The authors start with an excellent account regarding the development of the APC. Just on this alone, the book is well worth the cost. Where it really differs with the other books is the well detailed accounts of the development of APC's leading to the Bradley. It certainly does gives insight to how the Industrial Military Complex/Pentagon operates! And then there's the amazing detail given as to the specs of the vehicles..... Is this legal????? A well written and comprehensive book about the M2/M3 series from development to current and possible future versions. The value of the book is the information in its text not pictures. Granted, it has some interesting shots of the Bradley, especially of the interiors, it is not a "photo" reference book. It is a comprehensive account of the Bradley in a very readable form, with detailed technical descriptions kept to an absolute minimum.

The chapters in the book were well laid out, text was detailed but easy to read, chapters flowed logically from one aspect of the Bradley to another. A joy to read if you are interested in armoured vehicles.

Good up-to-date reference on the Bradley

This is a very useful and up to date work on the Bradley IFV/CFV family. It begins with a useful summary of the development of armored infantry vehicles from the M3 half-tracks of WW2 to the M113 and the first failed attempts at an IFV. The developmental history of the Bradley and all its variants then runs in parallel with accounts of the Bradley's use in combat. Excellent photos illustrate the book throughout. Well worth the money.

Excellent Mid-level overview.

The most interesting part of this book, and indeed, most of the "at war" series, for me at least, is the first portion which describes the developmental history of the vehicle, particularly also showing photographs of the various prototypes which preceeded the BFV. This is a part of the Bradley which is very rarely covered by easily available books, and is worth checking out on its own merits.

The rest of the book is written in plain English, with enough pictures to support the documentation and provide a visual reference to what one is reading. As a Bradley commander, I can pick out a few very small, niggling errors in the technical descriptions, but this does not detract from the general overview one would get as a reader with a more-than-passing interest in the vehicle but without getting to the level of being an operator's manual. Definitely recommended.

Excellent Holiday book. I read this book in 2000, again in 2001 and it will be re-read in 2002. My favorite story was The Choice by Monica Jackson.

I got much more than I had anticipated as I read these stories of inhabitants and former inhabitants of Mystic Ridge. The stories contained history as well as wonderful characters with whom anyone can identify.

this book was an easy read it was full of beautiful stories. my favorites were by ms.jackson and ms.esdaile. the book repaired hearts and mended them back together again. ms.green did an excellent job on bringing back together to people who loved one another once thru a business deal that turned out to be a bad one. ms.jackson's story was fabulous it had history written all over it. you want believe what she had instored for these two thinks to their past in another life. ms.esdaile gave nana's family a shaking just bring close together as a family thru her death. ms. forster's story was also nice she brought to people together who were opposites and made them right for one another in my opinion.

Unique concept--excellent read!

Great Book. I can't say enough about the interesting and unique concept that ties all four stories together. I would love to visit Mystic Ridge just to chat with Solomon. His ending comments were perfect. During this time of year, it was heartwarming to be reminded that we are only traveling paths started for us long ago. Many of us are learning to ackowledge our ancestors and their roles in our lives. This book reminds us of their importance. I loved all the stories, but I think 'The Choice' was my favorite. Read it and see if you agree! Good job ladies! (Typos and other errors continue to be a problem with our books, but we will continue to support our authors while things get better)

These four Christmas stories were awesome. Each story was something truly special and they were all first-class material. I must admit my favorite was The Choice by Monica Jackson. I know the holidays are over but if you can your hand on a copy of this novel, do so.
