When I took a job to model prediction of loss reserves for workers compensation insurance, I began to realize that the traditional statistical methods that I generally relied n would not help me (without modification). The required modification would be either to transform variables or to model long-tailed probability distributions. This is because in the insurance business you have to reserve for those big catastrophies. The cost data for workers compensation data generally show a high frequency of low to moderate costs... . However occasionally there are a few cases of sever injury causing permanent disability which could run over 1 million dollars. Even though the probability of occurrence is small the cost is so high that it cannot be ignored. Such claims will surely be found when large insurance company cover millions of employees over many years.
The problem occurs when insuring for floods, earthquakes, fires and other disasters. Stuart Klugman and Bob Hogg in 1984 wrote the first introductory text to acquaint statisticians with such probability models that are important in the insurance business. Other books covering the subject were covered in books on risk theory designed for actuaries. This book covers all the topics and assumes mathematical and staistical knowledge at the level of the book by Hogg and Craig (so some calculus is required).

Mathematics for property and casualty insurance actuaries

Review Date: 2008-03-24
"Loss Models from Data to Decision" is an excellent book that covers many of the areas of mathematics and statistics that property and casualty insurance (aka general insurance) actuaries are required to know. Topics include: frequency and severity models; aggregate loss models; ruin models; Bayesian statistics; credibility and simulation. The theory is well explained; with worked examples throughout and numerous exercises at the end of each section (these questions are based on past SOA and CAS exam questions, so are directly relevant to people studying for either of these exams). Solutions to the exercises are not provided in this book, but a separate solutions manual is available.

I am a lecturer in Actuarial Studies at an Australian university and set this book for one of my (later-year undergraduate) units. In my opinion, this is the best General Insurance text book available and students whom I have spoken to tell me that they like this book very much, too. I highly recommend this text for all student actuaries.

Excellent Holistic Guide for Herpes Treatment

If you are looking for an alternative to staying on damaging Herpes drugs for the rest of your life, along with a means to enhancing your attacked immune system and coming to true terms with a lifelong STD, this book is a must read. As stated in this book, you have 3 options if you have Herpes: stay on drugs (which does not help your immune system or build your resistance to outbreaks, and has other costly side effects over time), do nothing (which is unethical), or treat your Herpes holistically, which is just as effective if not more so than drugs in controlling outbreaks, and also provides lasting health benefits. Please, read this book before staying on drugs or purchasing all the so-called natural remedies littering the Internet (and sponsored by your favorite pharmaceutical company). Read it for education alone. Read it even if you don't have Herpes but are sexually active.

Thank you, Christopher!

This is a book most especially for those who want an alternative to western medicine and an approach that will be truly holistic, addressing emotional and social issues surrounding HSV 1 & 2, as well as medical ones. It is warm and caring and full of wisdom. I'm grateful to Christopher Scipio for helping me understand this virus and learning how to deal with it without shame and as part of being a human being despite misplaced social stigma.

Are you ready to change your life?

Not having read another book on herpes, I cannot compare this book to any other book. However, I can compare my health before and after reading "Making Peace With Herpes" and working with Christopher, and I will never need drug therapy, and I have not had any more outbreaks.

Everything I do now is for the better of my health, herpes, body, and soul, because I am living and eating and loving consciously. Christopher advocates through his book, and through his life, living and treating herpes holistically. As he says "There is an ocean of love and mercy around us at all times, ready, willing and able to assist in our healing. To receive your healing you can tune into this life-force anytime".

You will learn how to accept that you have herpes (cold sores are herpes too) and change your life to make the virus inactive.

Christopher inspires by relating personal stories and writings such as "Nine Years in The Wilderness", "Nine Stages of Dealing With a Herpes Diagnosis" (EXCELLENT), "He or She Just Ain't That Into You" (a personal favorite, you will see why).

Christopher further educates by including his herpes diet (it works and also made my winter allergies much less severe), recommended supplements, lifestyle and state of consciousness tips, a guided daily visualization for herpes, how to handle an outbreak, and much information on his natural remedies and how and why he makes them.

I recommend this book if you are ready to live the life you envision!

Christopher's book was a life saver. It is informative, it responded to my doubts and fears, it answered my questions. It showed me a way to live with herpes holistically. It taught me to think positively about something that was making me very negative.

I have given the book to several family members and friends who have herpes and they have loved it too. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book because I was looking for other answers than those provided by medical sites. It definitely provides information on statistics and forms of transmission as well as ways of protecting others. But more importantly it offers a spiritual/emotional approach to dealing with the often devastating news as well as the lifetime "companion". The author's personal experience is something we can all relate to and it is comforting to know that one is not alone. Actually knowing that we are a majority is in a way empowering.
There are no quick fixes for this and our emotional and psychological health is extremely important when dealing with this virus. Christopher Scipio makes a good point to touch on this throughout the book.
I am one of those people who does not buy into the big drug companies and quick fixes, so am drawn to holistic medicine.

This book captivates the audience from the very first paragraph. The story of this young boy lets you see what life is like in his part of the world and how he comes to know Christ through the actions of the man in the green jeep. The study guides are very helpful when reading this book to children. One can't wait to hear more from this new author, and perhaps learn more about the life of people who are so much less fortunate than we are here in the U.S.

This book is focused on medical preparation, but easily explains how to make your recipes recreational. It's easy to understand how to make the butter and all the recipes are simple baking recipes. I suggest getting familiar with baking before using your Canna butter because cookies can EASILY burn unless you're experienced, so start with a brownie or loaf. At least then if the outside burns there's still lots of inside to eat.

This is one book I don't mind reading over and over.

It's too bad the original cover is not printed in this edition. I'm going to pass this one down to my cousin, Adam, whose only 4. Hopefully, we can continue the tradition so this will be his first book he ever learns to read.

The durable metal case and magnetic clasp make this great for travel. It goes with me everywhere. For the most part I love this translation although the 13th Chapter of first Corinthians is more poetic in other versions. I also love the great topics, great stories, and great verses indexes at the back. Great gift for that special occasion. Love some of the other versions of this publication like the red Ignite, etc.

I like this Bible because it stands up to being tossed in a backpack or a cargo pocket well. That is the main selling point of this one for me--durability. I also really like the NLT for readability and ease of understanding.

Only negatives are the print is a little small (but not overly so.) and flipping to passages is a little bit of a trick since the metal edges of the cover make it a little tougher to get your finger in next to the pages.

The cover is cool, and is a conversation starter.

This is the other bible I am currently reading, this is the one I carry in my backpack. It has a very study metal shell, thus it's name, it has a magnetic clasp to keep it closed. I pretty much killed a bible about every year to year and a half by carrying it around in my backpack every day. This bible solves that problem. It is small, compact, and very durable. The metal Bible comes in a variety of colors and designs I have this green one with the dog tags and my wife had my initials engraved in the dog tag before giving it to me as a gift a few summers ago. There are currently, 2 Silver designs, black, orange, red and hot pink. The NLT - New Living Translation is also a great reading edition, both this and the TNIV are newer translations based on modern scholarship and are very accessible to today's readers.

Note: The Silver, Green and Orange are old stock and are NLT version1 the red and vlack are the NLT Second Edition. Next reprint of the others will be the revised NLT.

Milo and the Green Wagon is a Christian children's picturebook promoting the good works of the real-life Action Changes Things (ACT) Mission food drives. Part of the Milo series starring an anthropomorphic, cuddly white bear, Milo and the Green Wagon teaches young readers about the important role God plays in all our lives, and follows Milo's idea of using a green wagon to collect donations ranging from children's books to blankets, toys, baby food, and groceries. "As the ACT Mission team walked back to their van, Mary noticed a man sleeping on a park bench. 'Do we have a blanket for the man sleeping on the park bench?' asked Mary. Matt's mom replied, 'Yes, here's a soft, blue blanket.' Mary gently covered the man and said, 'This should keep you warm.' The man opened his eyes, smiled and said, 'Thank you.'" The bright, cartoony illustrations add a heartwarming touch to this positive-minded message about compassion and charity work in God's name.

I am the mother of two small children that have an abundance of opportunities to receive 'gifts'-they have 3 Grandma's, 2 Grandpa's and plenty of other close family to SPOIL them on all occassions. What greater gift is there than to teach your children to think of others? To be aware of the world around them and that they CAN make a difference, even when they are small? Milo reminds us that no matter how big or how small you are, we all have hardship and the capacity to help others. This book is simply a joy to share with my family, thank you Lisa M. Umina!

Milo and the Green Wagon is a blessing to us in a time when selflessness sometimes seems nonexistant. Umina encourages children and adults to give of themselves through a story full of fantastic dialogue and colorful imagery - a concept not experienced by my family since the Bible itself. My children love the pictures and ask questions of how they can help, who the people are who need our help and why. It's a great way to introduce charity to children, and adults who have yet to learn it.

This text was prescribed reading for the course in Neuropsychological Assessment during my post-graduate studies in psychology. It is comprehensive, and a fundamental text for the area. I consult it constantly when testing: one can become a little relaxed and forget the fundamentals. Complaints? It is a little out of date with regards to tests that are out there for examining different neuropsychological functions. You would need an additional text for this, such as Spreen and Strauss.

Each species has an entry with a map indicating their distribution, their common and scientific name, a brief paragraph with a basic physical description and notes on distinguishing characteristics, and a gorgeous, realistic color illustration. A revised introduction teaches the reader step-by-step how to use the guide to quickly identify avian species, and a glossary, index and birdwatching checklist round out this first-class resource. A treat for bird lovers due to the top-quality artistry alone, as well as being a quintessential identification guide, Newman's Birds Of Southern Africa is enthusiastically recommended for amateur birdwatchers and professional biologists alike.

I must say that this book is genuinely exciting. In this case, you may judge the book by the cover (I think the cover's pretty nifty, anyway).

I guess you have to be into this sort of thing (linguistics) to pick up this book in the first place, but once you do, don't be afraid to read it straight through. You won't be disappointed. You learn so many interesting tidbits (and they actually have come in handy a few times). I also suggest THE MOTHER TONGUE, by Bill Bryson (come on, it's fun, even if some of the content is questionable). Together with this book you'll be a language whiz.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE isn't only for geeks, mind you. There's a helpful index at the back and if you want to learn more about a word or a particular age in our language's history, it's no trouble.

A la fin, this book is worth however much money it costs. It's really, really super.

FASCINATING!

Every aspect of the English languageis presented clearly and delightfully. Why does "ea" have three different pronunciations in "dream," "thread," and "great"? How did the Danish conquest of Engliand affect words like "sky" and "egg"? What words did the Roman Latin leave in English? Pyles writes great English himself.

educational, fascinating, and fun!

"sklon'yat'... vo vs'ekh pad'ezhakh" -- "to decline (someone) in all the cases", so the Russian idiom goes. To discuss someone at length. Few speakers of modern English would make much sense of that idiom. Yet English was once nearly as inflected as Russian, having in common five of that language's six noun cases: the Nominative, Accusative, Genitive, Dative, and Instrumental, each with corresponding pronominal and adjectival declension. Old English nouns had gender, too, and not just masculine and feminine as in the "Romance" (Italic) Languages, but, like Russian, the neuter as well. English verbs once required more complex conjugation, and the subjunctive was used far more extensively than today. Old English structurally resembled modern European languages, and until comparatively recently, even had formal and informal second-person address. The reason for these similarities? Six modern language groups all descended from a common ancestor, Indo-European. They include Indo-Iranian (Farsi, Hindi, Romani), Balto-Slavic (Lithuanian, Russian, Polish), Celtic (Gaelic, Cornish, Welsh), Italic (French, Spanish, Roumanian), Germanic (German, Icelandic, Norwegian), and Hellenic (Greek). English is a sub-group of the Germanic branch. This book is a fascinating technical study of how English developed and changed over the centuries and was influenced by various languages and regional dialects. From Chaucer to Shakespeare to Melville to present, you'll see how English has become simplified yet enriched. Learn the reasons for the varying pronunciations of our vowel combinations and consonant clusters that drive ESL students nuts! This is a scholarly study. But you don't have to be a linguist to enjoy the text. Even the most etymologically "challenged" will easily see some distinctive similarities between Old and modern English and other Indo-European languages. BTW, that Russian idiom? We English speakers would discuss someone "every which way".

lovely intellectual writing, wonderful linguistic material, fun to read

Like Josh, I had to buy this book for the History of English course in the Linguistics dept at Portland State University. My instructor was Prof. Jennifer Mittelstaedt in 2006. Also like Josh, I know this "textbook" is a keeper that will stay in my home library as a professional resource, long after I graduate. Beautifully designed with pretty cover and crisp font/layout. (Expensive, but a nice book that gives pleasure to read & hold.) Organized into easily digestible and somewhat independent sections; the many verb-class & declension tables are clearly explained. Easy to pick-and-choose which chapters to assign, if time constrained. Fascinating historical linguistics & splendid etymologies, presented with surprising humor. The writers' "voice"(s) exude a warm, mature amusement at the vicissitudes of human history - and there is certainly an abundance of vicissitude in the history of the English language! Covers morphology, semantics, syntax, and phonology of OE, ME, EModE & PDE periods. Highly recommended!
