If you are a gardener and you really like to grow vegetables, this is the book for you. It has a tremendous amount of vegetable information in it. BUY IT and You'll love it.

This is a working person's book. Many of the poems have the feel of the poet writing notes on a small pad during brief breaks at work, imprinting observations about customers, workers, produce, clouds, items in the dumpster. The poems feel like a cross between Basho amd William Carlos Williams--the immediacy and sensitivity of haiku with the sharp eye of Dr. Williams. Lau further creates the working environment by intercutting announcements on the intercom. If you like the work poems of Philip Levine, you will like this book.

I bought my first copy of this book over twenty five years ago. At that time, there were not many cookbooks that contained recipes using Caribbean fruits and vegetables and using techniques familiar to us. Now, many years later, I have bought my second copy and may even purchase a third to give to my God-children to teach them how and what to cook. Although a classic and harkens back to an earlier era in the Caribbean, it still reminds us of who we are, where we come from and just how good Caribbean cooking is. And the recipes, they are still come out wonderfully!

This is a beautiful book worth purchasing for the watercolor paintings alone. The book is organized by vegetable type, and several heirloom varieties are described in each section. Interesting, simple, mostly vegetarian recipes are provided, as well as historical and cultural information. This makes a great gift book!

Very simple instructions. You will paint wonderfull pieces even if you never paint before. Very usefull for actual artists too.

Each word has a photo of the food and a drawing of a child signing the word. (Photos would have been a bit nicer.) Words are: apple, apricot, artichoke, asparagus, avocado, banana, beans, broccoli, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrot, cauliflower, celery, cherry, coconut, corn, cucumber, grapes, grapefruit, lemon, lettuce, lime, mushroom, nut, olive, onion, orange, peach, peanut, pear, peas, pineapple, plum, potato, pumpkin, radish, raspberry, spinach, strawberry, tomato, and watermelon.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book, but was pleasantly impressed immediately with the extreme high quality prints contained within! This should be billed more like a coffee table book, but the information it shares is too good to pidgeonhole as a picture book. I'd class this as a class act entry level book for detailed directions @ starting the process of growing veggies and plants in their infancy. The only negative I'd comment on is that I wish it was bigger. Its hard to cover it all with just one book though.
