My 3.5 year old loves this book and so do I. It has great colors and illustrations and the concept of math is integrated so well. It also ends perfectly, no awkward text or lame ending. Highly recommend.

I was reading a funny, entertaining book to my daughters, and would you believe it? By mistake, they learned something about math! The characters are funny and naive. My girls had fun predicting the problems that Ralph and Flora kept getting into, all related to the seemingly simple task of dividing up 13 beans. Very clever and very funny. Nice illustrations, too.

Excellent resource for cuisines of Caribbean Latino population
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-29
Beyond Rice and Beans focuses on the Caribbean Latino population, composed of individuals from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and countries in Central and South America.
The book is written in both English and Spanish and begins with a simple overview of meal planning, discussing the differences between the types of carbohydrates and suggested serving sizes. Most helpful is a deeper explanation of the different cuisines of the Caribbean. Each section includes frequently asked questions, the most prominent foods included in each cuisine, and tips to reduce the fat and calories in many of the dishes highlighted.
The book also includes practice exercises to further understand the information discussed. The chapter titled "Putting Together Your Meal Plan" includes examples of how to individualize a meal plan by allowing the reader to participate in choosing what he or she already eats and incorporating it into a new meal plan.
The book is filled with helpful lists and tables of common foods eaten in the regions, utensils used in a Latin kitchen, and a practical list of what to do during holidays and special occasions. There are several chapters that described the fruits and vegetables of the Caribbean. The author describes the foods in great detail, giving pronunciation where applicable, providing some historical background about the food, and listing health tips as well as stories of when she lived in Cartagena, Columbia. The book includes a very personal touch, which makes it very easy to read, and the information is well researched and includes very practical information regarding the use of the foods and where to find them.
This is a wonderful book that provides excellent information regarding the many cuisines of the Caribbean Latino population for those who are already part of it or for those who want to learn more about it.

BEYOND RICE AND BEANS; THE CARIBBEAN LATINO GUIDE TO EATING HEALTHY WITH DIABETES comes in a unique English/Spanish format and assures its value will reach into the Spanish community as well. Here are food lists, exchange lists and sample meal plans geared to Latino culture and foods, offering shopping lists, health insights, and the basics. From how to read a nutrition label to balancing a meal, this isn't your usual recipe book - plenty of those elsewhere - but a fine diabetes management guide especially valuable to non-English speakers with different ethnic foods on board.

Sweet, thoughtful illustrations and wording
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-05
This sweet, easy to read and easy to understand Bible will be great to read to your kids and when they're old enough, to read for themselves. The book is far from a word-for-word translation - rather a child's synopsis of major characters. Adam & Eve, Noah, Joseph, Daniel in the lions' den, etc.

Each story is summarized in one page, with easy to grasp wording. The illustrations are absolutely precious. Nearly every page has an animal in the background or foreground, usually looking content and happy. As Noah & his family are aboard the "floating zoo," a nearby whale is seen grinning ear to ear.

As depicted in the illustration concerning Moses, the Red Sea is parted and the Israelites run happily on dry land ahead of the Egyptians. In addition to donkeys, sheep, goats, etc., you can see a scruffy, happy little dog running along with them. These are sweet, thoughtful illustrations to stimulate the mind of the reader. There are so many details, your kids will love spotting new things each time they look at the pictures and read the stories.

This wonderful little toy is my sons favorite! His love for Clifford began with the TV show, that I just happened upon one day and it really caught his attention. I then found a large stuffed Clifford for him. But this small toy he really loves. He sleeps with Clifford and takes him everywhere he goes. My son is 9 months and is into biting everything. So I do recommend if your child is at that same stage you may want to purchase more than one so you can change out between cleanings.

This delightful stuffed toy is my 2-yr-old grandson's favorite! As we read the Clifford books, his very own Clifford snuggles with us! This small toy rides in the car seat, sleeps next to him, and has reinforced his love of the book series as well. The books are a source of good "life lessons", they are colorfully illustrated, and the stuffed toy brings the one-dimensional character we all know and love close enough to snuggle!

I got this book in 1996 as a gift from some fellow baristas and it's possibly one of the finest examples of coffee addict humor you'll ever read!
Whether you're buying for a connoisseur of fine coffee, a slave to the grind or a flat out java junkie they won't be disappointed.

Hilarious!!!

For anyone who puts food by, this cookbook is valuable. Beans, etc. store easily on the pantry shelf. This book illustrates ideas for cooking with those beans to vary the diet.

Don't judge this book by the cover.

I saw this book out of the corner of my eye in the coffee table section of my local library. I'd just purchased several pounds of heirloom beans to make a chili recipe that turned out great. I'm cutting back on red meat so I was looking for a bean and grain cookbook to use up all those beans if nothing else. I checked out COOKING WITH BEANS,GRAINS, PULSES AND LEGUMES (CWBGP&L).

In addition to the lengthy title there are 53 more descriptive words of what you'll find inside on he cover of CWBGP&L. If that's not enough to sell you there are also 9 photos of various foodstuffs. This book was published in the UK. Maybe this is the way they do cookbook covers. In the US we generally thumb through books on subjects we're interested in or read reviews on Amazon.

Other than the cover which isn't very important in the total scheme of things, what's inside the book is outstanding. The photography is wonderful. It makes you want to try every recipe. There are 37 pages devoted to descriptions of all types of beans, grains, seeds, pasta, flour and noodles. You get everything from history to preventing flatulence! The recipes, like most cookbooks are divided into chapters for breakfast, appetizers, soups, salads, meat, bread, deserts, etc. CWBGP&L has 185 recipes. They cover a wide variety of ethnic dishes and cooking styles. You get everything from a very basic Jamaican Rice & Peas to more elaborate dishes like Buckwheat Noodles with Smoked Trout.

I'm not an expert cook. I found the recipes that I've tried so far to be doable for the average cook. If you don't have a large health food store nearby finding some of the beans, grains and other stuff could be a challenge. However, an internet search will find a vendor for all your recipe needs.

If you are looking for healthy, hearty, and fun recipes I recommend COOKING WITH BEANS,GRAINS, PULSES AND LEGUMES.

I read this book and then passed it on to other friends. Each of them, from children to an 85 year old, said that it was such easy reading and written just like someone was talking. It is good for any age. The illustrations were kind of "down home", too. I would recommend this to anyone.

Joe R is one of a kind. His writing is at once streetwise and refined. His language is stripped of all pretention and this book (a novel that reads like an epic poem) is a hard hit to your gut. Very cool.

My son loved these stories. They are fairy tales with magic boots, kings, queens, etc. but with various family constellations presented very matter-of-factly. They are not preachy but convey values that (...) (such as, being different does not mean you're bad) in a fun way.
