Anyone with an interest in the French language or Louisiana's unique Cajun culture and wildlife would appreciate the adventures of Clovis the Crawfish. This story centers on Batiste the skunk who is teased by the other wetland animals because of his stinkiness. The story teaches the powerful lesson of tolerance and the appreciation of other's differences. Included in the book are many simple French vocabulary and phrases which are furthered explained and translated in the text. Check out the entire Clovis the Crawfish series.

I bought this book for my 3.5 year old grandson. He has fallen in love with it - sleeps with it and the Bidon Box Turtle. He corrects pronounciations of others who read it. He is also learning geography (Texas, South Lousiana, and Mississippi). The chacters are all loveable and the illustrations (mostly in color in the newwer versions) are wonderful. He is now having us work with him to create the different characters in play dough.

If you fish, or just wonder the waterways of MO, this book is a wonder. Combine it with the "Fishes of Missouri" and you will find out more about the animals below the waters surface then you would have found out in a lifetime. Unlike most academic style taxonimic works, Mr. Pfliegers books are interesting reads unto themselves, with easy to navigate identification guides, deatils on were animals have been found, and interesting facts about each. They are worth finding and using! I referenced it in my own work.

Down the Crawfish Hole is well written for children. A wonderful variation of Alice in Wonderland with a little boy fishing as the major character. It is whimsical and magical and children should be enchanted.

The artistry of the illustrations is just fabulous. The drawings are detailed and fun, and perfectly fit the story.

Looking forward to more children's books from Wes Thomas.

a fish of a different color

My sister is very lucky I love her so much. This two volume set is unlike anything I have ever seen outside a museum. This book first published in 1719 was a landmark of hand colored beauty to be had only by the most serious collectors of natural history. To this day,in spite of the strides made illuminating the life of sea creatures, these volumes still stand as a masterpiece of scholarship, passion and artistic ability. Renard's FISHES,CRAYFISHES AND CRABS meticulously drawn and captured in the brilliant watercolors of the eighteenth century has induced a VERY bad case of book lust. This is strictly heirloom quality and yet can still be had for a song. Reissued as a rare book By John Hopkin's University Press in 1995, The volumes are covered in blue green linen over board and slipcased. They are printed on archival acid free cream colored stock and preserve the eighteenth century print and text. The original text in Renard's French is published in facsimile, though each fish is also identified in English. A full translation is provided by the editor as well as Renard's biographical background and notes on natural history of the period and the Indies where Renard created this important book.
So my sister's getting reaaaaaally old. I guess she will get it for her birthday!

A Great Reference Book on Crayfish and Branchiobdellids
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-10
Those with a serious, scientific interest in crayfish or branchiobdellids will find this is to be an indispensable reference (branchiobdellids are little worms that attach by suckers to the outside of crayfish, or live in their gill chambers). It is a comprehensive bibliography on crayfish, and includes citations to all references through 1987. For those not familiar with scientific bibliographies, this book basically is a list of all books, scientific papers, and other documents written about crayfish, from Aristotle's time through 1987 -- it does not include actual information about crayfish, but is the key to finding that information.

Assembling a bibliography like this takes years of dedicated work. This particular bibliography is outstanding for a number of reasons.

Most entries are annotated, using codes to conserve space -- the need to refer to the two-page table of codes is a little inconvenient, but there is no other way to annotate without greatly increasing the length of the book. Annotations are extremely valuable to those using a bibliography, and their inclusion makes this bibliography particularly valuable.

The entries are both alphabetized by author and sequentially numbered. The comprehensive index cites to the sequential numbers to conserve space. The entries for 1986-1987 appear in a separate list at the end of the book, with their own index, but that does not detract from the utility of the book.

The actual list of references is in small print, but the entries are still easy to read -- with over 12,000 entries, small print is necessary to keep the book at a size that is convenient to use.

The authors explain in detail how they assembled the bibliography, and offer the user a number of practical tips. An interesting bar graph following the preface shows the geometric growth of the crayfish literature during most of the 20th century.

The copy I purchased came with a CD. I have not had time to fully explore the CD, but it should be extremely useful to anyone who needs to assemble a preliminary bibliography on a limited aspect of crayfish biology.

Finally, the full-color photo of a longpincered crayfish on the dust jacket is striking.

This is not bedside reading for most folks, but it is an extremely valuable reference for anyone interested in studying crayfish or branchiobdellids. Thanks to the authors for a monumental task well done.

Review from The Nature Pages
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-24
This impressive reference covers much of what is currently known about the natural history of the genera Nerodia, Regina and Seminatrix in North America -- collectively referred to as "watersnakes" because of their common habitat. It does not include semiaquatic snakes found near or in water that are not dependent on wetland habitat for food and protection.

Range maps down to the county level are provided for each species covered in the text, including sources of distribution records. The cumulative range for the three genera includes 38 U.S. states, one Candian province, Cuba and 11 Mexican states.

Drawn from their own studies and nearly 1,800 references, authors J. Whitfield Gibbons and Michael E. Dorcas cover every aspect of watersnake natural history, from evolution and fossil records to reproduction, predation, captive maintenance and conservation efforts. They also discuss research questions, hypotheses and opportunities associated with each species.

Gibbons is a professor of Ecology at the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Lab and author of Their Blood Runs Cold: Adventures With Reptiles and Amphibians. Dorcas is an associate professor of biology at Davidson College in North Carolina.

After reading this book I started the Redclaw Hatchery.

First off, I would like to thank the author for writing this book on Red Claw Culture and esspecially for including the section on information resources.

The book was able to bring a lot of great information together, and presented it in a manner that made the average 'water farmer' comfortable with Red Claw production. This must not have been an easy task, considering the lack of available information.

After reading the book I decided to dig deeper and became excited with the possibilities. The book was correct in stating that this industry is in it's infancy and quite likely will grow fast.

I now operate the Red Claw Crayfish Hatchery in Pittsburg and have a website. And this book got me started!
