This was my assigned textbook for a class in the Early Roman Empire. More than thirty years later, I still have the same copy, which I have read almost to tatters. Salmon's lucid and compelling prose is what historical writing should be. I often pick it up and re-read favorite passages.

The book begins with the accession of Augustus and continues through the reign of Hadrian. While focusing on political events, there are several chapters on literature, architecture and art during the period.

I originally read this in conjunction with Suetonius's The Twelve Caesars and The Annals of Tacitus. Salmon's writing compares favorably to these classics and provides a modern, objective viewpoint to balance the partisanship of the ancient sources.

This can be read either as a work of popular history or as a solid, unbiased reference to the period. I highly recommend this work to anyone with an interest in Roman history.

A master of poetic nuance in his prose work, his poetry is at once immediate, subtle, revealing, political, philosophical and magical. The world of Ray Bradbury has always been a special place. Millions of people have shared in it; shared his longing; his insight; his visionary knowledge of things which humanity holds dear.

These poems are haunting, telling, nostalgic, satirical, funny and wise. In his late 80s, Ray Bradbury is still sharing, and giving so much.

This is a beautifully photographed work showing the beauty of one of the most spectacular rivers in the world. The essays enhance the photos, showing a love and appreciation for the river and its surroundings. This is more than a travel log or just a bunch of pretty pictures. The book tries to convey the experience of a wilderness river, and succeeds.

Experienced poet, novelists and short fiction writer Frank Golden brings poetry lovers something to enjoy with "In Daily Accord". The poems, inspired by Haiku and Senryu formats, seeks to express several views of the world from different voices to give readers a more inspiring look at the world in that their view is far from the only one that exists. "In Daily Accord" is a unique collection of short poems, easily enjoyed in short bursts or all at once. An unnamed sample from the "November" chapter: At three o'clock in the morning/I was reminded that the floor/Of our house was unclean.

Links landscape, aquatic, terrestrial, social, & economic characterizations to describe biophysical & social systems. Integration was achieved through a framework built around 6 goals of ecosystem mgmt. & 3 views of the future. Different approaches to mgmt. can alter the risks to the assets of people living in the Basin & to the ecosystem itself. Continuation of current mgmt. leads to increasing risks while mgmt. approaches focusing on reserves or restoration result in trends that mostly stabilize or reduce risks. But population increases & the pressures of expanding demands on resources may cause increasing trends in risk. Illustrated

Traditonal Fare

Small booklet (roughly 5 x 7 inches) of 47 pages with metric conversion on inside back flap, although you don't need to know metric to use the recipes. This is one of a collection of over 50 titles in the traditional fare series by J. Salmon publishing. There are 11 sepia reproductions of paintings of historical Irish life. There are no photographs or illustrations of the finished recipes. The book is put together like a travel memento. It's sentimental in a charming way. A bit of authentic Ireland from yesteryear.

It is important to realize that the recipes are from the UK, and there are differences in measurements compared with the US. For example, a pint is 20 ounces in the UK and 16 ounces in the US.

There are also a few differences in ingredients. Caster sugar is simply very fine white sugar, and ordinary table sugar works just as well. Mixed spice is roughly the equivalent of pumpkin pie spice. Demerara sugar is very large crystals of sugar sometimes found in the US as a decoration on muffins. It can readily be found in the baking section of the supermarket. A useful website is Cook's Thesaurus at www.foodsubs.com.

Iron Mountain Road is Eamonn Wall's second collection of poetry, following Dyckman - - 200 Street (Salmon, 1994), Wall's widely praised first book. Here is a collection which chronicles the process of migration - from the bustle, high buildings, and close living of New York City to the empty wide open spaces, and often desolate but magnificent American prairie and high plains. This is an innovative book which describes aspects of the Irish immigrant experience which has been hitherto ignored. The Platte River in Nebraska and the Black Hills of South Dakota are brought brilliantly to life by a consciousness formed in County Wexford and New York, and it is often to these starting points that Wall turns to for confirmation. Other important concerns are history, parenthood and the sea.

Features of Iron Mountain Road are the long lines and prose poems which are employed to great effect to describe the enormous space the poet encounters, and which also facilitate Wall's desire to write a poetry laden with the deep rhythms of ordinary life. Iron Mountain Road is a moving and brilliant collection which confirms Eamonn Wall as a daring and original poet and as spokesman for frequently marginalized, but never silent exiles. Wall gives eloquent voice to a lost generation - the exiles of the 1980s and 1990s.

About the Author

Eamonn Wall was born in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, in 1955. He has lived in Nebraska since 1992 where he was associate professor of English at Creighton University. He is the newly appointed Jefferson Smurfit Professor of Irish Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. His most recent collection of poetry is The Crosses, published in 2000.
