Tulle is written by one of Boston's best young writers right now. It is written with confidence and is not afraid to toy with different plays on words. There is a thin line between success and failure when working like this. With 'Tulle' it's success all the way. My favorite poem was the witty 'Witches of Monin Na Gloigeann'. This poem conjures up so many chaotic images, I get the feeling that is what O'Donoghue intended. O'Donoghue skips gently but surely between the light side and the dark side. 'Bova' is very dark and despairing. "Is this the same book!?" I ask myself. With someone moving so comfortably through so many themes, I don't have to ask but only to definitely announce- "Mary O'Donoghue is the voice of the new generation!". I only hope that Tulle is not the last installment.

This is where I just want to say in a deep husky voice 'If there's one book you gotta read all year...then it's Tulle'. It's that exciting a read from a richly talented poet. A friend mailed me this raving about it. His hype was on the mark. I will type 5 titles of poems randomly and bet you when I read over them they will be classics- 'Cattle Cars', 'Textures', 'If You See Kay', 'Trupi M'Leshon' and 'Embezzlemen'. Yes! I knew it, they are 5 classics- classics amongst classics. This collection is clever, funny, sad, sentimental, mocking of sentiment- everything! Bring on Book Number 2!!!

I bought this book because we buy Wild Alaskan Salmon online and needed some more recipes so that we wouldn't get bored. We try to stick with the Perricone Plan. The recipes sound exciting and even though we've only tried a few so far, we look forward to working our way through the entire book. I would recommend it to anyone who eats salmon on a regular basis and wants some variety. Some of the recipes could be use with other fish as well.

This book is a MUST have for anyone interested in or even afraid of cooking salmon!
I have always had a fear of cooking fish, but now, I feel like a pro! Diane Morgan explains why something is done in her books, and the recipes are always great! My family was not a big salmon family before I got this book, but now we will have it at least once a week, twice if I can get to the store, and I have even had it 3 times- using it in a salad!
Diane is fantastic and thorough in her salmon research!

As the wife of a fishing finatic living in Seattle, we have plenty of salmon in our freezer year round. I initially requested this book from our local library and was simply astounded by the quality of the recipes in this book. The Asian Salmon Burgers were unbelievable. I made extra of these burgers for my son at college and he called to say, "Make more, please." I have also tried the Blackening spice on fresh Silver Salmon and found it extremely tasty. I served it with a big salad. I am anxious to try more of the recipes and can't say enough good things about this book. Thank you, Diane Morgan, for this great book!
Tried only one recipe and it was fantastic.

Salmon Without Rivers is a great book of historical facts. It includes many issues like; original salmon locations/populations, "Economy over Environment" issues, and the ineffectiveness of large decision making commissions/agencies. However, with all his good background information the book does not propose any solutions nor investigates today's coastal human communities as they relate to the salmon and/or habitat.

This is an excellent book that documents the history of salmon, how native Americans viewed them and how modern Americans view them. It focuses on why the pacific northwest is facing a salmon crisis, and our failed attempts to replace what we have lost. Great read for anyone who is concerned about environmental issues.

A thoroughly researched and impassioned presentation including the history of salmon, their decline, why billions of tax dollars in restoration efforts have had paltry returns, and insights into the where we should go from here. A complex issue is examined from many perspectives in an easy to read and compelling book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in salmon.

As a freelance author writing a piece about salmon for a California-based magazine, this book was indispensible and eye-opening. It is unfailingly sensitive and intelligent about salmon, discussing the fish as fellow creatures in the "natural economy" in which we all live, rather than as mere commodities in the "industrial economy" that has transformed the West in the last 150 years. It is fascinating about the geology that shaped the salmon's environment, the evolutionary history of the fish, the relationship between Native Americans and salmon in the Northwest, and it provides a detailed history of the many factors that have led to the salmon's decline, including habitat destruction, misbegotten hatchery programs, overfishing, dams, mining, grazing, irrigation. If you like to read books about ecology, the creatures of the earth, fish, or the Northwest--you can't go wrong. This is a wonderful book.

The discussion of geologic events by Dr. Behnke, which explain how certain fish species became dispersed is most interesting as well as fascinating.
The paintings of the various fishes by Joseph Tomellari are worth the price of the book alone. All presented on high quality print and paper.

This book is a wonderful piece of work, with great illustrations of the various species of coldwater species found in North American waters. Behnke writes in great detail on the various species of trout, salmon, char, grayling, and a few other coldwater species, and includes much detail on sub-species distribution in a current and historical context, often down to the watershed. He also includes sub-species that have gone extinct in historical times. An excellent introduction discusses such topics as the origins and evolution of Salmonids, as well as their classification, taxonomy, biology, morphology, and anatomy.
The only mild criticism I have is that more could have been written on the distribution of brook trout sub-species in the Midwest and East, along with lake trout of the inland lakes of the Upper Midwest.
The book should be in the library of every serious trout or salmon angler.

Behnke's reputation is international, and this book lives up to his reputation. Not only are the paintings by Joseph Tomelleri magnificent, but Behnke's scholarly descriptions are without equal. Maps showing ranges of trout are accompanied by information about the habits of trout, their characteristics, and historical information that sometimes goes back to the ice age. Put this alongside James Prosek's collections of trout paintings from across the U.S. and around the world and you've got three gorgeous books filled with information every trout aficionado needs. I bought this book at a book-signing Marilyn was having at Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center in Alaska. I was was there on a side trip from a cruise ship, and it was my lucky day. Marilyn autographed it for me, and I took it back to the ship - where it hardly left my hands for the balance of the cruise, and on the plane home. What a great book! Reading this account of Marilyn's early life with her husband in Alaska is like becoming a part of her family. You suffer with them when they don't find fish, and rejoice with them when the year is good. You see in your mind's eye the beauty of Alaskan waters, and can almost smell the salty air as they hunt the elusive salmon. You rejoice in the birth of each child, and marvel at their life aboard a small fishing boat. You live with them in the tiny cabin they build on land. Written in the first person, Marilyn brings you to Alaska and into her family with a wealth of details, and with a skill and honesty to be admired. The book deserves every one of it's Five Stars rating. Do yourself a favor and buy it for some long weekend when you want a really good read. You will not regret it!

Besides telling the not-to-be-put-down story of her life, the author has created a historical document of southeastern Alaska, including the changes that occured during her many years there. The book is also a source of inspirational quotations which embody the Alaskan spirit. Marilyn Jordan George is a multitalented person; I am glad she penned her life story.

My husband and I had just spent a number of fascinating days exploring The Pan Handle of Alaska (Southeast Alaska)-Which included-a number of communities that are only reached by boat or plane, as well as gliding among the ice floats in an area called Tracy's Arm to view a large glacier. When we landed in Petersberg we visited the museum and met Marilyn Jordan George. We could not resist buying her book; Following The Alaskan Dream.
We have both read it and have both thoroughly enjoyed it. The author gives you a detailed account of how life was lived during her days of salmon trolling in Southeast Alaska. Marilyn recounts the good-times and the trials of raising a family living on a boat, while salmon trolling with her husband, Skip Jordan.
It was most gratifying to read and enjoy a book that represents how positive thinking and a zest for life can give you such great pleasure. I was very sorry it ended---and hoped that there will be a sequel. Eliot Marshall/Klatzkin-Yardley, Pa.

Dr. Ryu gives a rare peek into Korean life before, during, and after Communist occupation of North Korea. Beginning with a personal account of the uprooting of his family, the ensuing saga that developed once he decided to immigrate to the U.S. gives us all a new perspective on American culture as well. His idealistic dreams of success and a peaceful life in this "land of opportunity" remained steadfast despite obstacles and unfair practices that threatened to sour his attitude. But "inspiration, aspiration, and perspiration" kept this man of integrity unshaken and optimistic. His unconventional choices included marrying a feisty Italian woman, and together creating a whole new world that surmounted all cultural barriers and embodied the American dream. An emotional, exciting, and thoroughly satisfying reading experience.

I can count a handful of classics I've read more than once, but this is the first book I've turned over after the last page to start all over again. Salmon Run is a gripping road trip through a man's fragmented life, stripping away all else to leave just enough to find his soul. The characters, the laughs, the tension, and the beautifully detailed story telling of this first time author leaves me wanting only to know when his next piece will be published.

This a truly marvelous book I couldn't put down until I'd finished it. It has everything and the depth of its characters is stunning. At the beginning I wasn't sure if it was a book meant to be funny or suspenseful. It turned out to be a book of great sensibility about the nature of the human soul. If the rest of his writing reaches this level I predict a bright, a truly eye-closing bright, future for the author!
A hair-raising plot

"Salmon Run" has you intrigued from the first page. It is an easy-to-read novel, with vivid descriptions that make one feel like they are right there.
What happens to a man who has it all? He had a good job, beautiful and rich wife and two great daughters. Little did he know that his world would fall apart one day at the beach and he would be on the run-- from what, he didn't know. But he did know he needed to get away from the ghost that was following him and, along the way, he discovers who he really is and what life has in store for him.
Capps' book has so many twists and turns that you cannot put it down. It will make you angry, sad and almost yelling as the main character Woodrow Salmon finds himself in so many high-risk situations and his loving wife is behind it all.
"Salmon Run" is Capps' first novel and he has done an excellent job in pulling in the reader to this hair-raising plot. His writing flows easily, and his descriptions of places and events are such that you can identify with them. We all know people like those in the book.

SALMON RUN by S.W. Capps was our choice for our Book Club in December and what an adventure we embarked on from beginning to end! SALMON RUN is a great first book from an up-and-coming author with many twists and turns, unforgettable characters and scenes. The end of the book was not the end of this tale, we were honored with a conference call from the author to discuss SALMON RUN and found S.W. Capps to be very down-to-earth and he delighted us with stories about personal events that inspired this book. I highly recommend reading SALMON RUN as your next book club novel and then contact the author from the information provided at the back of the book for your discussion. I eagerly await S.W. Capps next book!
A definite page turner!

Woodrow Salmon was a man that had it all. He held a high position at Titan Toys, had a beautiful, rich wife, and two perfect twin daughters. His life was turned upside down following a simple family outing to the beach, which once you cracked the surface was not so simple after all. Woodrow's wife Claire had put a hit out on her husband. After repeatedly encouraging Woodrow to go into the water to swim, Woodrow finally heeded to her wishes and went to cool off in the ocean. Little did he know that lurking under the water was a man who was poised and ready to kill. When attacked Woodrow was rescued by a giant wave which separated him from the hit man. Thinking it was just a creature of the sea that had attacked him, Woodrow tried to make his way to shore but realized that he had lost his swimming trunks in the struggle. As the beach was jam packed with people he tried calling his wife from the shallow water but she did not respond to him. A jellyfish forced him to run ashore where he was subsequently arrested for a string of charges including indecent exposure.
Not knowing that his wife had put a hit out on him, he tried calling to her once again as he was being taken away and was ignored. His phone call from the police station also went unanswered. When he got out of jail he found that his wife had gotten a restraining order and had cleared out the accounts. To make matters worse, after reporting to work he found out that he had been fired. Further events cause him to go on the run and change his identity in order to survive. The remainder of the book follows Woodrow as he tries to keep one step ahead of those pursuing him.
"Salmon Run" is full of twists and turns and is a true page turner! You can't help to feel for poor Woodrow who seems to have the worst luck on the planet. Following him as he tries to escape is definitely an adventure worth reading. The characters whom he meets along the way are very memorable and well constructed. Although the book is 350-pages long it flies by and is a very easy read.
"Salmon Run" is S.W. Capps' first novel and it is a very impressive debut. Capps has a true talent for reeling the reader in and keeping them hooked until the final page is read. The "About the Author" section on the back cover states that he is working on his second novel and I definitely will be looking for that book once it is released. I am confident that anyone who enjoys reading suspense novels will enjoy "Salmon Run" and I highly recommend it.

This book is an excellent resource. It is well organized and to the point. Most guides just say, "Go to the company website and research the company before your interview." This book tells you what areas to find on the site, what information you should look for, and how to use that information. Salmon also tells you the specific questions you should be asking your contacts at the companies you are interested in. Other books just say, "Talk to people you know at the company to find out more about it." There is no fluff here.
I also really liked the very detailed descriptions of how to plan phone calls to contacts and referrals. Talking to someone on the phone and remembering what I wanted to accomplish and not getting flustered is such a challenge for me. This book helped a lot.
The only thing I didn't like was the first section or so where it felt more like a sales pitch for his "method" than a book. I was afraid he was just going to try to sell his lecture series. However, after the first few pages, the book got down to business. It was excellent and well written from then on.

This is an excellent book. Author Michael Salmon wastes no words, but provides a series of tips, questionnaires, checklists and exercises that will help everyone, even the most introverted, build a network productively and use it effectively. There is no fluff here, and minimal self-promotion. The book is mostly meat. The author is extraordinarily well organized and to the point. His advice on how to categorize relatives, friends and acquaintances may seem cold, but it is indispensable. Similarly, he recommends becoming a resource to others so that they may someday become a resource to you - a utilitarian and self-serving approach to human relations, but if you have no other reason to help people, this is not a bad one. One quibble: the book is repetitious and illustrates the hard truth with soft little imaginary anecdotes. That's more a fault of the genre than of the author. If you are in job search mode, We highly recommends this book to you. As the folks back home might say, write when you get work.

Sharp Design, A Cutting Tale!

The Faceless (the first Terry Sharp tale in a long line I hope) is one of the rarest of all birds these days. A graphic novel that manages to create a solid air of mystery around both the characters and what could happen next. Taking an obvious love of horror films to a new level in comics storytelling, not only is it LIKE the classic Hammer films, it creates something new from that stylized mythos. A character obviously crafted with care, Terry is exactly the kind of guy you would expect to find in the middle of a bizarre conspiracy...but cooler! Blended with just the right sprinkles of cool and confusion-The Faceless leaves the reader wanting more. And you get it with the bonus interview and a short "film" that is worthy of it's heritage with each panel. And the art... Adrian Salmon mixes total stylistic coolness with the rare ability (and attention to) actual SEQUENTIAL STORYTELLING that is lost so often in the "hep" world of graphic (design) novels. Excellent character design that doesn't forget expressiveness in both motion and in simple telling details such as facial expressions, it flows well and compliments the story instead of overpowering it. The coloring is simply peerless as well-instead of candy coloring everything and making it look like everything else on the market these days, the mood is set by the colors and the story flows through the art. Neil Vokes provides the startlingly cinematic backup art, complimented well by the coloring of lead artist Salmon.
Overall, a chance to get something that many comics don't bear out of late-pure graphic satisfaction.

Robert Tinnell is indeed one of us...the lurking faceless hordes of "monster kids" who love classic horror films. That he has parlayed that love into the creation of such an engaging and original character - horror film director by day, occult adventurer by night - is a boon for anyone who loves spooky noir-ish atmosphere, historical background (in this case, Midwich Films as a stand-in for the famous Hammer studios) and hints of mind-numbing horrors just beyond the everyday facade of British civility. These hints are what make one salivate for the next Sharp adventure...that, plus the fact that the character is so much fun! Adrian Salmon's artwork is just fantastic...some of the most imaginative use of color and shadings I've seen.
a great read

"You were drafted into a war, Terry. A war against an enemy who is nameless. Faceless. They lay low for years, spinning their webs. Makes one paranoid in time - wondering if you've dreamt it all. And then tonight happens. And you realize it isn't all a dream."
I love that. For me, that passage sums up the mood of THE FACELESS perfectly. Subtle. Secretive. It takes its time to weave its magic spell, much like Bava took his time to work his sorcery with some of his films (KILL BABY KILL being the best example of his slow-burn approach to horror). Terry is a enigma. A womanizer. A creative. Arrogant and full of bluster, it's no surprise he has at least one failed marriage behind him. But you like the guy. He's tough. He doesn't mess around and he doesn't suffer fools. And he's larger-than-life, but if twice-as-ugly, at least the ladies don't care. ("Will you be breaking my heart too, Terry?" "Most likely." "Splendid. . .")
Unanswered questions tantalize us. Who are The Faceless, and what, exactly, were the tragedies that Terry was unfortunate enough to witness which pulled him into this nightmare requiring magical protection to survive? We want to know. Peppered with Hammer Films in jokes, and a very pleasing THE DEVIL'S BRIDE vibe running thru it, I am already thrilling at how the circles of protection in basement rooms and freshly conjured marauding demons would translate to the big screen. Perhaps Terry could even meet the Duc De Richleau? Will the J&B flow freely in YELLOW? *CLINK*

I write a blog all about horror from the '60s-'70s, and I'm here to tell you that FACELESS hits the groovy nail on the head. The story is an absolute treat for Hammer fans. The look is spectacularly reminiscent of the colored-gel lighting techniques of Italian horror masters Mario Bava and Dario Argento. If, like me, you have an overlapping love of Hammer and eurotrash, you'll really be in heaven!
Tinnell knows his Hammer. He doesn't just make references or winks; he creates a whole alternate world where "Midwich Studios" cranks out schlocky cult classics like Baron Frankenstein, Return of Frankenstein, Blood of Frankenstein, and Cult of Dracula. We get stars like "Peter Lingham" selecting eyeballs from glass jars in gruesome close-up. I got so caught up in it, I started to wish there really had been a Midwich Studios, and then I had to remind myself--oh yeah, there was! Satanic cults were probably the top horror staple all through the period, so Tinnell's use of them here just ratchets up the groovy factor that much more.
Art-wise, this is Adrian Salmon's American breakout effort, and he clearly understands the stakes, because he goes for broke. I've already remarked on the eye-popping colors, which are the first thing you'll notice on a casual flip-through. Salmon's drawing is just as arrestingly stylized and non-realistic, and it suits the story to a T.
Then we get a mock retrospective article on Midwich by Mark Clark and Bryan Senn, and a mock interview with one of the actresses by Tom Weaver. The backup feature--scenes from Return of Frankenstein drawn by Neil Vokes--alone is worth the price of admission.
I just can't recommend this highly enough!
