Pea Soup Fog is a charming picturebook story, set in a small village on the rocky coast of Maine. One day, a thick-as-pea-soup fog covers the whole town; no one will listen to the advice of a small girl, turning instead to the butcher, the baker, and the candle-maker for help. Only when these three have failed do they listen to the girl's wisdom, share a wonderful meal, and see the fog vanish. The soft, colorful illustrations bring this heartwarming and simple story to vibrant life. This is a brief picturebook tale that is well-suited for read-aloud storytime or bedtime.

I was hooked from page one.Rarely have I come across a
book, especially one about poems for kids, that has
held my attention as this one did.I not only enjoyed
reading it to my children, but found myself drawn in by
the nutty characters and charm illustrated here. The
author has managed to capture the essence of a child,
and mold it into one fantastic book. The poems are often
hilarious, while others are thought provoking and urge
the reader to explore their hearts, as well as the
hearts of others. This book is a must have for kids.I
enjoyed it immensely!

This is such a wonderful book. It was written by a Mr. Donlan Piedmont of Roanoke. It is a must for anybody who loves the Hotel Roanoke. The two landmark dishes gave Mr. Piedmont the title of this book. Both recipes are on page 118 of this book. You should try them sometime. This book tells about all the things that happened in Hotel Roanoke, all the way from when it opened for business in the Heart of Roanoke, VA (December 25th, 1882) to when it closed for renovations November 30th, 1989.

Like Donlan Piedmont, the Hotel Roanoke has so much meaning to me and so many friends. I recently had my high school graduation dinner there. My former speech teacher Mary Beth Coffey was married to the front desk manager taught me phone manners with two telephones that were once in guest rooms. My former special ed teacher Ann Stone told me that her kids took their first swimming lessons at the hotel's old pool. [....]

I remember this picture book from my childhood. There are 2 male characters, friends, and one of them (the one with wings on his back) decides to take a trip into the land of red (or is it green). The dialogue and narration are dated and very "groovy" and "far out" "zing-zap zowie wowie" and so forth. Each page is an artwork with a caption at the bottom, inside an artful border, to tell the story. It is an extremely trippy book.

Many years ago James Dickey called Charles Ghigna "the finest new poet that I or anybody else has read in a long time." PLASTIC SOUP: DREAM POEMS continues to establish Ghigna as one of the most original voices in contemporary poetry. His poems are full of passion, contempt, and vision. I'm sure Dickey is looking up from his grave right now and saying, "See, I told you!"

What you eat is what you plant, her mother always said,
that edible tuber common as dirt, a near-daily staple.

It's no surprise this is one of the first lines of many peeling at and slicing into the heart of the Plain's in Twyla Hansen's new collection Potato Soup, just out from The Backwaters Press. Hansen has been unearthing the beauty and bones of Nebraska for sometime, celebrating a land and it's character with inimitable clarity. The thing I've always enjoyed about Twyla Hansen's poetry is that she's not afraid to get some dirt under her nails. Hansen writes with a sure-footed integrity, uncovering secrets and scars while others are just beginning to scratch at the surface.

I live in skin handed down from a long line of Danish farmers,
From women and men of the soil, all imperfect, the genetics
of a double recessive all vulnerable and hard at work.

Scrape away the layers and there's no writing anywhere to be found,
only dust and feeder calves and slough grass, the callous of contour,
fertility and row crop...

Fence posts. Corn, wheat, oats. Outbuildings that rose
board by board into sky, a young girl breathing haybale
and clover blossom and top soil, gritty as our old dog Brownie.

Hansen has had her hands in the hardpan since she was a child. She is a poet and horticulturist that lives and works here in Lincoln, where her wooded acre is maintained as an urban wildlife habitat, from which she won the Mayor's Landscape Award in 1994. Potato Soup is an honest and rich collection that celebrates the human condition and heartland. Potato Soup is the Plains and its people.

Stick to the Script
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Someone may ask you what the point is of owning the "Red Dwarf" scripts if you've seen the TV episodes. It's a fair question. You may even own the video tapes. But imagine this nightmare scenario:

You're sitting at home watching your favourite "Red Dwarf" episode, laughing along, when all of a sudden a power blackout leaves you sitting in the dark. "What am I going to do?" you cry in despair. "What's going to make me laugh now?" Tears begin to flow.

However, in a parallel universe there is another version of you who happens to own a copy of the "Red Dwarf" scripts: Primordial Soup. All is not lost. With a copy of the scripts and the aid of a torch you can simply pick up from where the characters were cut off in mid-sentence. The book even contains photographs in the middle section to help you remember what the characters look like. Life isn't so cruel after all.

In this book Rob Grant and Doug Naylor have chosen what they consider to be "the least worst" of the "Red Dwarf" scripts. There are six episodes altogether: "Polymorph", "Marooned", "Dimension Jump" (my favourite), "Justice", "Back to Reality" and "Psirens".

It doesn't need to be said that the ideas used in "Red Dwarf" are clever and funny. The episodes chosen here are from the first five years of "Red Dwarf", before the budget became too extravagant, making it possible for these episodes to be "remastered". You can read these scripts and still laugh while your other self discovers there are no batteries for the torch either. Enjoy the lunacy.

I like trains and cars, and I also have experienced Bruce's work (Classic Cars, Cars of the Fifties, American Muscle Cars) so whe I saw that he authored this work, I knew that I would enjoy it.

The pictures are detailed -- especially the steam engines. Bruce took time to get the valve work and driving rods right. There was an ocassional gaffe, but those were easy to overlook when considered in the total context of an excellent work.

If you are an adult, if you like trains, and if you like to color, this is a book for you.

Bill Neal was and is the consensus visionary leader of the Southern cooking renaissance. This book by his ex-wife and business partner provides a unique vantage point to his development as a chef and food writer. The recipes contained therein are a motherlode of food ideas and formulas. Buy this one and celebrate food and the best of the American family that carries on even when divorce splinters its legal union. This is great food and family values all in one place. Precious reading.
